The Money-Grubbing Demons: Will you be a victim?

Despite a nation still in the throes of an economic morass, money-grubbing "demons" stalk the highways and byways ready to part gullible (or overly greedy) people from their hard-earned money at the drop of a hat. No, we aren't talking of gambling here, though to be sure - even remotely accepting some of these demons at their word is gambling with your future financial security. So, just as we earlier went through the hierarchy of the fictitious demons of "Hell" it now pays to examine each of the money grubbing variety:

1) The Ponzi Scheme demons:

These are exemplfied and embodied in Bernard Madoff who parlayed popular gullibility to a new high. He actually enticed many thousands of (fundamentally) greedy people to believe they could earn up to 11% through his investments in a down market. Eager to beat the existing indexes, they willingly entrusted their money to this demon, hoping to get back at least 8-11% more than they put in, despite the fact that a cursory glance at the numbers would show them this was pie in the sky.

But they bit, and now many of them are out all of their retirement savings. Should we have empathy for them? Of course, but only up to a point! At the end of the day people really DO need to ask themselves if something sounds too good to be true. And if so, avoid it. Recall Ben Franklin's old maxim: "A fool and his money are soon parted!"

But in this case, perhaps underlying greed made them fools. Recall again the old Bajan tale of the mouse whose greed got the better of him. The mouse spotted two morsels of cheese: one nearly his size but enmeshed in a trap. The other merely a crumb - enough for maybe one meal- which had dropped off near the trap and was easy to get with zero risk. But the mouse decided he preferred the bigger prize, and believed he could snatch it without penalty. So he slowly crept up and raised one tiny hand to drag the giant piece of cheese off its trap perch....almost....almost...a little bit more.....WHAM!

2) Insider trading demons:

These demons were more popular in the 80s and 90s and were the basis of the famous film, Wall Street. The basic idea is that certain people get privy to certain deals being made which can affect stock share price, and they then either dump or buy the shares to make money. (Often later dumping them after the buy in).

Sad to say, these demons are still lurking around as related in a story appearing in today's Wall Street Journal. Evidently, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided the Connecticut offices of hedge funds Diamondback Capital Management and Level Global Investors amid a far-reaching insider-trading investigation.

3) Flash Trader demons:

These demons are dangerous because they're now nearly ubiqitous. "Flash trading” exists where high speed computers use special algorithms to detect large buy and sell orders to rapidly adjust their trades, volumes. Since the high speed computers can then act in nanoseconds to either buy or sell with the flash information, they inevitably get the better of the more conventional (slower) investors who use phones or computers. (More than a million flash trades can be done before you can call a regular broker to sell your XYZ shares)

Let’s look at one example. Say a flash trade system or firm is using its high frequency computer - algorithm combo and detects a large buy order for a stock listed initially at $20 a share. Then the flash trade firm will immediately begin scarfing up the stock – driving up the share price – say to $25 or $30 a share or more. The large conventional (institutional) investors then buy it at that price, and the flash firm makes a killing.

Usually the institutional investors are those who manage 401ks, for example, which means the little guy 401k owner ends up paying more in this case. (In another case, a mass flash trader selloff may see the little guy’s fund share value plummet). Bear in mind here 401ks are typically invested in mutual funds comprised of a body of stocks, maybe ten or so. The flash traders’ capability with their high speed system is such that it can control the numbers for all the stocks of a particular fund, though true, there are some funds (e.g. Vanguard Group) which offset some of the effects by systematically lowering trading costs. This is often done by narrowing the spread between what investors pay to buy and sell shares.

Other funds don’t fare as well since the flash traders’ systems “front run” them. Thus, a stock’s orders (or many stocks in a fund) get “picked off” by the flash traders’ computers that detect the orders, then adjust to benefit. Not surprisingly, large institutional investors and consortiums are now trying to fight back with anti-gaming methods

4) Market timing demons:

We have all been informed that these money -sucking demons are at bay, but I would believe it about as much as I'd believe Pastor Mike is ready to renounce his evangelicalism to become a Buddhist. Janus Worldwide fund was majorly involved in market timing shenanigans in the early 2000s and I actually received a an invitation to participate in a class action suit to pursue them. (I declined since I exited the fund in late 1998, well before the issues came up).

In market timing large institutional investors (like major funds) try to time the market with special algorithms to sell before a specific threshold. The problem is that little guy investors usually are the ones caught in the transaction. Readers can learn more about it in the book, License To Steal: The Secret World of Wall Street Brokers and the Systematic Plundering of the American Investor.

5) Ordinary Con-Man Demons:

These characters are unfortunately, a dime a dozen. Their usual shtick is to come around - often through a friend, neighbor or family connection - and promise you the sea, the earth and the sky if you just part with a bit of money to invest in this hot, new "once in a lifetime" deal (that may vanish tomorrow!).....for whatever. Might be real estate, maybe it's some new product or a new innovative company that needs capital, or some other gimmick. The sharp person who's studied finance even a little can generally spot them from a mile away, and like all con-men (who prefer to get their money by not having to work for it) they're always exposed by the come-on.

The issue here, even if you're not a finance maven, is to at least learn about what your getting into before you hand over one buck. Ask for a prospectus (if an investment) or detailed land surveys (if real estate) and also information on the person controlling or managing the deal. Google him or her and find out as much as you can. Recall the law of avoiding Murphy's potential snares: "The less information found or available on a prospective offering the less confidence one must have in it!"

I don't care what the deal is, real estate, stock, or whatever. If there's zero or next to nil information, it's not worth lickspittle.

Finally, if you lack enough self-confidence and are shaky on financials, seek out a financial advisor if all else appears to pan out.

Whatever you do, don't be one to repent at leisure when the "demons" are about to laugh all the way to the bank...with your money!

Poor Pastor Mikey: Beseiged by Demons and Apes!

Seems poor Pastor Mikey, aka my recently converted and "saved" fundagelical brother, has more than he can handle now with a swatch of atheists entering his site and answering his questions - as he challenged them to do. Caleb Shay was first, but he addressed the questions on this site - knowing Mikey would read them (as indeed he did, because he gave specious 'rebuttals' to all of Caleb's answers!)

Then there was 'Human Ape' -an erudite poster on evolution - who tried to assist Mikey in finding educational resources to ramp up his minimal knowledge of human evolution (and we know he needs it, because he can't even pass a basic test on evolution). Mikey evidently couldn't take Human Ape's second set of replies so banned him from his site, as per the previous blog.

Then came 'Ladyatheist' who did her best to educate Pastor Perplex, but she also was given short shrift, and - as per his shtick - depicted in a less than complimentary way as a 'she-devil'. Seems whenever one does engage Mikey in an honest effort to address his questions, he can't help doing a predictable brain......errr....knee jerk whereby he draws caricatures to depict those he demonizes. He dare not dignify them as fellow humans, lest he lose what little mind or brain he has left! (The notion of a real, flesh and blood fellow human diverging from his beliefs, is enough to rock his fragile mental world.)

Finally, we have the latest atheist poster, Richard, who Mikey depicts as an emissary dispatched by Satan (see image from his blog) to do what else? Harass poor widdo Mikey..... Boo Hoo hoo, all those nasty Satanic emissaries, knocking at his net door! Whatsa poor little fundie to do? Well, hell, make up all kinds of stupid excuses to demean their honest answers, or else pooh pooh them!

Well, first we had his dismissal of Caleb Shay as really really me incognito! He argued (like a blind fool or idiot) that no one could or would possibly post his answer's to Mike's questions on THIS blog since he (Mike) wouldn't see them! But, within a day, he posted a series of "rebuttals" to Caleb's responses on his own fundie blog, showing for all the world that he HAD seen them! I had to even ask if Mike's IQ was really that low, that he couldn't process that one didn't have to post anything on his blog to be assured that he'd see the content. They merely had to post them HERE!

Then Human Ape tried his best, but Mikey banned him in perpetuity for "cursing", "blasphemy" and other related nonsense. This despite the fact he hasn't presented any evidence to show Human Ape merited that treatment. (We think it more because Human Ape's 2nd set of answers were too overpowering mentally for Mikey to deal with)

Ladyatheist arrived next, but she was dismissed as a "She Devil". As he puts it:

"Brothers and Sisters ; it seems there is no end to whom Satan will send in to try and dispute the Word of God and replace it with the ( ignorant ) word of "man." This time he sent in one of his "She Devils" with answers to my questions , who also goes by the name "LadyAtheist."

Note that at no time, despite his open invitation for atheists to enter his blog and address his questions (which he formerly complained they avoided) has he treated the atheists with a scintilla of respect. In each case, they are depicted either as agents of Satan or demonic embodiments. He can't help but giving their responses to his questions along with a Satanic caricature of the people. But really folks, this is what we expect from a Fundie who perceives the world and unverse exclusively as a battle between "good and evil" with no gray.

Finally, we have Richard showing up to try his hand and being treated the same. Merely because Richard, like Ladyatheist, strives to enlighten Mike by answering his questions - he's depicted as being sent by the Devil to Pastor Mike's site. But again, Mike's short term memory is failing, because it was HE that extended the open invitation to atheists to answer his questions in the first place! (In another brain fart, Mikey looks askance at Richard's responses and attempts "to show how the atheists ALL seem to be contradictory insofar as conceding that there IS a "possibility" that God ( a Divine Creator ) exists". But NO one ever said all atheists think alike or that their brains move in lockstep, like Pastor Mikey's fundagelicals. As I often noted in blogs, there are as many twists on atheism as there atheists - but there are TWO primary types: strong atheists and implicit or weak atheists. Up to now it seems he can't process those nuances.

One is therefore surely led to ask Mike if his questions are merely a posturing ruse, which he hopes to use against us, and in truth he expected no one to seriously try to answer them?

Exhausting his demonization methods and cant, he can only resort to one more egregious tactic (common to many net types frustrated they can't use a person's background against him) he carps about the anonymous profile. But, folks, there is NO law stating that anyone must provide a Google profile! One can........or not! It's the poster's own business, not anyone else's and certainly not a blustering wannabe pastor's! Even if one did provide a profile, there's no assurance it would be legit! It might be just cooked up for the benefit of satiating nosey, stupid people - to shut them up about complaining about "cowards" for whom no profile's given.

Thus Mikey's rant about it:

"But..how do we KNOW this "Richard" exists? After all , when I clicked on his blog profile it reads : "The Blogger Profile you requested cannot be displayed. Many Blogger users have not yet elected to publicly share their Profile." Yeah , okay . Usually I don't even bother acknowledging these I-Net cowards who opt NOT to display their profiles . They are the types who , like the cowardly little worms they are , spout off and want their "15-minutes of fame," yet , wish to remain anonymous . These are people who usually enjoy making obscene phone calls and threats to people over the phone...anonymously , of course . "

Is pure horse pockey and nonsense. For sure it isn't a case of "cowardice" as he intimates, but rather merely protecting personal information in a universe replete with nosey people who have nothing better to do than seek out details of others' lives. And to what end? We know not! But we have ample cases already (from Facebook and Craig's List) of stalkers who were shown the open door, or 'key' to a person's life, because the victim shared too much personal info. We also know software is available for $39.95 on the net, which - given a person's name - allows all kinds of ancillary info to be excavated including: Social Security number, address, bank accounts, credit scores etc. Thus, use of a blank profile in today's hyper-nosey world is an intelligent self-protective step. Again, the charge of "cowardice" based on existence of a profile is idiotic, because one can easily give a fake one. While this satisfies the profile hounding obsessives like Pastor Mike, it doesn't mean anything is real. From this angle, the anonymous profile holder is actually more honest than the profile faker. Honest enough to acknowledge, that YES - s/he values his or her privacy, doesn't want to compromise it, and also won't be bullied by any clown into dropping their cover. And we know, above all else, Pastor Mikey is a Bully, else he'd not refer to people who seek to protect themselves as "cowardly little worms". In his eyes, sure, because he's enraged he's denied an angle for attack.

Notice also his other bully tactic (and he's done this often before, as when conflating atheists with sexual predators and arguing they need to "report their identities and addresses to the police") of comparing those who wish to protect privacy with "obscene phone callers". But this is the domain of the fascist and bully! It reminds me of the case not so many years ago in one U.S. community when all males were ordered to provide their DNA to solve a rape case, and anyone who refused (out of righteous privacy considerations) would be placed under suspicion of committing a sex crime! The ACLU had to step into that morass and warn the authorities that no one should be placed in that position, and to do so meant a massive erosion of personal liberty.

In this case, the person who simply leaves his or her profile blank is regarded in the same context as an anonymous obscene caller, despite the fact the anonymous basis is totally distinct so it's a non sequitur. Because one chooses not to identify himself when posting a blog comment, doesn't mean he will make an obscene phone call (or leave an obscene comment).

But this is typical of Mikey!

Fellow atheists, be aware when you post anything to him you are dealing with a card-carrying BULLY. This is his persona and his character, he can't help it. I explained already in the previous blog how he came to be a bully. He will bully you through your answers to his questions via his ignorant "rebuttals", and he will post images depicting you in some unseemly or demonized way.

Because of his crass, bullying nature, he's incapable of extending the hand of mutual respect to anyone who is different in belief from him.

I applaud, however, all those who've gone to his blog to try to get him to see the light. The only problem is that he's trapped in a permanent darkness that won't even allow him to see the other HUMAN attempting to get him into that light!

Banned for 'Foul Language'? How About too high an IQ!

It appears the atheist-evolutionist poster 'Human Ape' has been given the bum's rush by Pastor Mikey. It appears the allegation made is that in his next set of answers (to Mikey's daft, loaded questions) he veered into intemperate language and is henceforth banned from Mikey's sacrosanct site. Well, let's let the would-be pastor tell it in his own words:

"I tried to give him ( as I do ALL atheists ) the benefit of the doubt , and taking into consideration the extreme hold Satan has on them , by posting his answers to my questions , along with my rebuttals . However , shortly after he sent me his original answers ( that I posted yesterday : http://pastorstahl.blogspot.com/2010/11/human-ape-answers-some-of-questions.html ) ; he fired off a volley of other "comments / answers" that were filled with vulgar profanities and blasphemies . Frankly , I could care less about him cussing me out , and directing his hateful and ignorant obscenities at myself . BUT...as I've mentioned numerous times in the past , when he ( or ANYONE ) blasphemes my LORD and Savior , JESUS CHRIST , that's where I draw the line ! You can hate me , curse me , beat me , crucify me , whatever..I could care less . When that happens , I'm simply reminded of the words of Jesus ; "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" ( Matt. 5:44 ) . "

Well, we don't buy it! Not one bit. First, Human Ape's set of original responses to the Pastor's questions were models of rationality, objectivity and cool. Why on Earth would he suddenly go ballistic to the extent Mikey claims? We've no idea! Further, what EVIDENCE have we, apart from Mikey's claims, that such an outburst even transpired?

The least Bro Pastor Wannabe could have done is post a segment of Ape's responses, and if any "profanity" appears, easily substituted key letters, like f*#@, or s%!t or whatever. We would then get the idea of the extent of transgression, and no literal "curse" words would besmirch Mikey's glorious little site (Can't have that! Better to preserve it to show those he judges hellbound to be shown burning in that abode, crafted in his deranged mind)

Second, Mikey's history precedes him. Readers may recall here both Caleb Shay's and Janidebar's complaints from a year or so ago when- once again- Bro Pastor invited comments to his charges against atheists, and they took him on. All of a sudden, as jani put it, he stopped posting their replies - allowing only his. On further inquiry it seems Caleb had shown that an infinite Being isn't capable of lifting an infinite mass, because infinite energy would be required to do so, so no energy would be left, and the Being would cease to be infinite. The Pastor couldn't tolerate such a brilliant riposte so simply didn't post it!

Let's understand one thing about this brother of mine: From the time he was knee high to a table he's been a bully. Whenever he starts receiving the short end of the stick, he resorts to cheating or using methods to get the better of the other guy. In his guise as manager of a pseudo-Christian blog (most real Christians now ignore his site, after one particularly illuminating altercation with one of them 2 years ago) he achieves this end by goading those he despises with loaded questions, then when they seek to honestly answer them, he comes back with bullying replies. I already gave an example in my last blog on this:

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2010/11/kudos-to-human-ape-but-beware.html

Thus, he hates to lose, physically or intellectually, and will do any and everything in his power to try to prevent it. What I suspect is that his Boot Camp "training" at Parris Island in the early 70s probably presaged this. Most people may not know this, but when I encountered him in Miami in 1973 (him back from the Corps, me coming back there for a 4 week holiday, between original Peace Corps service and an extension) he informed me he was writing a journal which he hoped to convert to a tell-all book, about his Boot camp experiences. He even had a little Smith-Corona typewriter to whack out pages, and I read about 22 of them by the end of August.

The little I recall reading was appalling: absolute over the top humiliations, including making them lick toilet rims, and using toothbrushes to clean latrine floors - and that was the tame stuff. Mike vowed at the time that when his book came out "it would blow the top off the corps" - but then, as with many people and their proposed books, he never got around to finishing it.

But I theorize his own bully mode really was reinforced from then, and he wouldn't be taking any more shit from anyone. When he finally found Jaysus and "salvation" the ordinary bully then transmogrified into the worst kind, a holier-than-thou self-righteous bully. A bullier of atheists, Catholics, Buddhists, Mormons, JWs, Science of Mind'ers, Eckists...you name it. Bully by way of his antics on his blog - either blocking further comments after attacking posters, or alleging they committed this or that infraction. His ultimate game, to depict each and every one in a Hell setting, e.g.http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2010/10/more-total-pathological-insanity-can-we.html

Anyway, we invite 'Human Ape' to tell his own story on this blog. We welcome his actual comments that were denied on Mikey's blog, and we will post them here. Fair is fair and this bully Mikey can't be allowed the final word.

Repukes to Soon- starving Kids: 'Go Suck on Air!'

The Head Culprits: Eric Cantor (left) and John Boehner. We hope they and their fellow reeps are able to sleep at night knowing how many kids will go to bed hungry for the next few months or more.

This country is really and truly pitiful. Pitiful, in that a bunch of pukes beholden to big business and wealthy fatcats, would rather give the latter astounding tax cuts to buy more gold, diamonds, yachts and baubles - than give a break to the 2 million unemployed who need an extension by Nov. 30. Otherwise they won't have a red cent to live on.

Oh, there will be the teepee idiots who vent off their snark, by replying:

"Then let 'em get a job!"

Despite the fact there are NO jobs, period. We have roughly 14 million chasing full time work, and only 2.8 million jobs for them. Why the hell do you teepee bozos think that every time a new round of job interviews are announced, ten times more people show up than can be accommodated? Uh,....it's because of the ratio between those seeking work and the actual available jobs being nearly 5 to 1. Ever heard of trying to make a silk purse out of sow's ear? Or, trying to fill a one gallon bucket with five gallons of water?

But let's leave that horrific stat and process this: Nearly all of those unemployed are in families and have kids. An estimated 3 million kids, already suffering food insecurity (meaning not enough food to last them the day and provide all nutritional requirements) are being held hostage too. If their folks lose an unemployment extension, we can expect them to then have to compete with many millions of others for precious food stamps. But what do the pukes want to do here? Well cut the food stamp amount from $4.50 a day down to $3. Now, try to figure that one out for say a family of four, or even three.

Projecting ahead, the Repukes are adamant they will not budge unless other cuts in spending come from the federal budget. Hello, asswipes! Ever check out the extension of the Bush tax cuts for the rich you are pushing? There are you damned spending cuts right there! Nearly $70 billion just next year. (If a one year extension for the rich is sacrificed for the needy kids.)

Why do these turds insist on giving all this largesse to the wealthy, increasing an already vast inequality in wealth, while letting kids essentially go into malnutrition? (Amazing in itself, because these jerks also insist they are the party of "values" and against abortions, yet they are prepared to let the living kids starve!) Well, because those are the same sleaze bags that donate the largest amounts to their campaign coffers!

What effing hypocrites!

Unemployment benefits one way or other will run out for two million desperate fellow citizens by Nov. 30th. Democrats, rightfully, sought to extend coverage in this holiday season to avoid the singular travesty of two million experiencing their Christmas with only cat food, and the kids' stockings filled with coal...compliments of the Republicans.

But those Republicans (and eleven psycho dems who really ought to leave the D-party) opposed using emergency funds for the $12.5 billion cost of the jobless aid. Get that now: $12.5 billion, or less than one fifth what extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich will cost, for a year. Talk about misplaced priorities! Instead, they want the aid paid for by cutting other programs, like food stamps or Medicaid.

One repuke, a Charles Boustany (La), actually had the temerity to argue that Dems, by bringing the bill to the floor without providing a way to pay for its costs, failed to heed the anti-spending message of the November election. However, as I pointed out in an earlier blog, that message was garbled. Also it was the message of a minority of activist voters, and would have been nullified had the 29 million missing voters (who showed up in 2008)appeared here. My point is that a minority of a minority does not constitute a "national message" and ought not be interpreted as such.

A more salient point for Boustany and his crass, fellow Scrooges to process, is that never before in a major economic downturn such as this, have emergency funds been disallowed to help the long term unemployed. We were always at least, civil and compassionate enough to assist our fellow Americans. But no longer it seems, and this is why atheists laugh on recognizing most of those responsible for this are "god fearin' Christians". Yeah right! If Christ did return now and behold how these "chosen" were carrying on, he'd need at least five barf bags to relieve himself! Obviously, they ignore his words: "Whatsoever thou doest for these, the least of my brethren, that thou doest unto me".

Thanks to these disgusting Reeps, millions will sit in cold homes this Christmas, at the mercy of already stretched charities and ravished food banks, while little Johnnie or Susie (with maybe a lone licorice stick between them) ask Mom or Dad:

"Mama, why did those men in Washington do this to us? DO they hate us that much, to make us starve?"

Hopefully, they will see the image shown here on this blog, to see just who they can blame for their predicament. And bear that in mind, especially Mom and Dad, when 2012 rolls around.

Footnote: If the repukes keep up their obstinacy, by March 1, five million will be deprived of extended benefits and will be seeing an Easter with maybe one egg to share per family.

Kudos to ‘The Human Ape’! But Beware!

It is extremely gratifying to see yet another atheist and evolutionist attempting to educate a certain intransigent and obtuse “pastor” as to the basics of evolution. Seeing his answers to Mikey’s recent questions discloses the input of someone who’s actually worked in the field, and why Mikey ought to take it to heart.

But will he? Don’t hold your breath! We must recall here the old saying about "casting pearls before swine". (Not that Mikey is a literal swine, but rather ignorant like one- say your average brain-jacked Repub).

‘Human Ape’ needs to be appraised of several items concerning my pastor brother:

1) Though he will indeed post your responses, it's merely to use them as a "tackling dummy". Thus, he'll twist or distort them at will via his own irrational addenda - and by the time he gets done, the average reader won’t know which end is up. He’ll obfuscate everything with his religious craziness and claptrap.

2) He doesn’t know how to ask a fair question, and even if he did, he'd likely opt not to – see:

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2010/11/skewering-more-ignorance.html

And if you answer one of his rigged questions, then complain it’s unfair, he’ll merely mock you, e.g.

You state in your very first sentence , "Since nobody can live millions of years, that's not a fair question." Oh , boo-hoo-hoo . Not a "FAIR" question? Gimme a break . ( But hey , maybe you can join the 'pity-pool' club with "Caleb" and ask "Phil, the atheist to help you out, huh? But be sure to "ask NICELY" ) .”

Of course, we can easily turn the tables on him by asking him:

Were YOU actually around in 33 A.D? Did YOU personally SEE Christ walk on water, raise the dead, cast out devils, get crucified and rise again?

But then you see, the rules he applies to others he’ll never apply to himself, he will merely quote chapter and verse of his KJV as if that’s a substitute for his being there!

3) It is impossible to educate him because, like a cult member, his mind’s already co-opted by his bible. If it isn’t in there, he’s not going to accept it. Case closed.

Human Ape’s honest effort to educate Pastor Mikey is seen in this part of his answer:

I could spend the rest of this week explaining some of this evidence, but I suggest instead you could stop being lazy and stop being afraid, and study this evidence yourself without me holding your hand. Here's a good place to start:The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution by Sean B. Carroll.”

The trouble is Mikey has no intention whatever to stop being lazy. Being content that all truth, all knowledge resides in his bible, where would any motivation come from to seek outside sources? (Unless, as we've seen, it’s to lift passages from some specious source via Google to attack recognized science. Say copping any crappola put out by the Discovery Institute, or the Creation "Science" Institute).

We see this obduracy when he writes in response to Human Ape’s sound advice:

Anyway , since you concede (and I agree ) , that "nobody can live millions of years," then all the evolution 'hocus pocus' is nothing more than a "theory." MACRO-evolution has never - and will NEVER be witnessed by ANYONE ( unlike the miracles of Jesus , and others ) that WERE witnessed ; even by Jesus' ENEMIES ! Yet even His enemies never denied them ! They only attributed them to the work of "devils" or "demons." Science is NOT "proof" of diddly-squat !"

Note here that in the first line he isn’t even vaguely aware what a theory is! He thinks it’s the same as speculation, when in actual fact it’s the highest refinement and reinforcement of a hypothesis – one that has actually had its predictions validated, confirmed! He also isn’t aware that though one doesn’t behold direct evidence for macroevolution (because of the time scales for change) we can obtain indirect evidence for it!

For example,in a paper first published in ‘Science; (Vol. 215, p. 1525, 1982) and authored by O. Prakash and J; Yunis, a remarkable homology was disclosed between chimp and human chromosomes when heterochromatin is excluded. They found no less than thirteen IDENTICAL chromosome pairs, that included chromosomes: 3, 6-8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 19-22, and XY.

They also found that chromosome ‘17’ in the chimp differs from that in the human by only a pericentric inversion. In addition, they found evidence in their study that the human chromosome ‘2’ was the result of the telomeric fusion of the two ape chromosomes designated ‘2p’ and ‘2q’, which would also account for the dimunition of chromosome pairs (from 24 to 23) as one goes from the apes to humans. And then there's the powerful macroevolutionary evidence for common descent in the fact that the cytochrome-c protein sequence is identical in apes and humans!

But all of this will sail serenely over the head of a guy who’s never taken a basic course in genetics, far less biology – and still refuses to take a basic test on evolution to show he’s even qualified to be asking questions on it.

Note also, again, how he changes the context dishonestly in his response! Instead of admitting that no, HE likewise has never seen Jesus do miracles, so can't honestly attest to their reality - he invokes claimed “witnesses” who observed them. But that ISN’T the same as the response to asking (point blank) if YOU have actually seen ….whatever.. THEN. In other words, he changes the response basis to suit his own agenda. For him it's perfectly allowed to invoke distant (in time) putative witnesses to assorted biblical claims, but we must actually have been current witnesses of macroevolution.

Logically, if we accept his “witnesses” (whether they were ‘enemies’ or not is immaterial to the point) he must accept ours for macroevolution in the indirect sense! (E.g. the researchers Yunis and Prakash who published their findings on chimp and human chromosomes). He can’t logically demand WE must actually have witnessed x, y or z for ourselves, then excuse himself from the same demands. But we see this is a constant tactic of choice, because he simply doesn't want to engage in any fair way, being a bully at heart.

Note also his last sentence, the sign of a true scientific illiterate: “Science is not proof of diddly squat”.

We see he has no remote idea of proof, no conception of science, or indeed, how different sciences vary in their thresholds for evidence and criteria. (Thus, climate science has lower thresholds than celestial mechanics). He’s even oblivious to the fact of Men having landed on the Moon proving beyond a doubt the validity of one branch of science: celestial mechanics (which deals with predicting the future positions of planets, the Moon etc. Hence, if the future position of the Moon could not have been accurately computed for July 20, 1969 humans could not have landed there on that date. But again, he’s not intelligent enough to process this!)

All of this shows clearly that it’s a colossal waste of time to engage him on any level. He doesn’t even speak in our language as evidenced by his laughable catechresis of “proof”:

Proofs have two features that do not exist in science: They are final, and they are binary. Once a theorem is proven, it will forever be true and there will be nothing in the future that will threaten its status as a proven theorem (unless a flaw is discovered in the proof

Final and 'binary" my ass! He confuses mathematical proof with scientific! As anyone who's ever done scientific research knows, it's quite impossible to "prove" a particular solution to a scientific problem to be "true" (that is, true for all times and conditions). Solutions of scientific problems are instead assessed for adequacy, that is, in respect to the extent to which the researcher's stated aims have been carried out.

Two categories of criteria are those related to argument and to the evidence presented. To judge adequacy then, we look for the strength and consistency of logical/mathematical arguments, and the goodness of fit of the data in a given context. By "goodness of fit" I mean that two different datasets on comparison are either strongly correlated or anti-correlated. As an example, the rate of growth of tree rings is strongly correlated to the level of activity of a particular sunspot cycle. There is agreement and an excellent "goodness of fit".

All such determinations of adequacy perform the same function for scientific research that quality control does for industry. Most importantly, no determination of adequacy can be rendered until and unless the research is published in a refereed journal. If I am asked to invest mental and emotional energy in some extraordinary (e.g. “supernatural”) claim or other, then what exactly are the rational criteria of adequacy by which I can judge that claim?

Can it be set against original and actual scientific hypotheses? Can it admit the basis of numerous empirical tests- and moreover- can it be susceptible to any form of prediction?

If the answer is ‘No’, then we cannot place it into any scientific context! Of course, different theories of science represent different levels of abstraction: quantum theory is at a higher level than general relativity, and general relativity is at a higher level than Newton's theory of gravitation. But-- and here is the key point-- the limits of validity for each theory are ultimately founded in measurements, specifically through careful experiments carried out to test predictions.

It is this testing of reality which provides a coherent basis for scientific claims, and which bestows on science a legitimacy founded in reality rather than wish fulfillment fantasies. This is a basis, moreover, for which theological claims have no counterpart, despite that fact that theologians have often tried to make their claims sound like proven theories.

Why do we trust science, even over mathematical proofs? Because it is the only entity that enables and provides a self-correct real world process. A process that is able to find, examine and correct any errors. This is because science gives us an approach to objective truth by way of successive approximations, a concept that is totally alien to most religionists. It works like this: You have data, and accessory information which leads to some initial result which tests a particular hypothesis- call it 'x'. (E.g. the Sun is a yellow dwarf star)

You then acquire better data (perhaps because of refined instruments, techniques ) and are led to a modified (improved) result such that:

x (n+1) = x + P(x)

where x(n +1) denotes an improvement via iteration, with P(x) the process (acting on x) that allows it. (E.g. P(x) is a photometric spectrometer which shows the Sun's maximum radiation output follows a blackbody (Planckian) curve and is near 5,500 F. (Peak of the yellow part of the electromagnetic spectrum)

Later, more refined data become available, such that:

x(n + 2) = x(n + 1) + P'(x + 1)

(e.g. superior spectrometer readings in other regions of the spectra confirm the solar output bank is limited)

and so on, and so on and so forth. Each x, x(n+1), x(n+2) etc. being a successive approximation to what the objective, genuine value should be.

Religions - by contrast- simply impose their truth ab initio by fiat or decree. There is no attempt whatever to incorporate any approximation. Or to even acknowledge that 'truth' can't be accessed all at once. Rather, one must set rational truth aside and succumb to ‘faith”.

This is why Mikey the Pastor will never, ever speak our language or process our arguments - far less accept them- and why it's a waste of time for Caleb, Human Ape or anyone else to try to bring him enlightenment.

He is perfectly content to reside in his deluded, Medieval, Kingdom of Darkness.

Skewering More Ignorance!

Now, that Caleb’s taken down Pastor Perplex’s absurd questions, let’s look at Perplex’s own responses to Caleb and see how we can skewer each. We will take them in the order of his questions:

Q1 ) Is it POSSIBLE there could be a Divine Creator? ( Please note the key word "POSSIBLE" )

First, let’s look at the (secular) definition of "possible."b : being something that may or may not be true or actual .. possible implies that a thing may certainly exist or occur given the proper conditions. He then begins to construct his 'straw man' by continuing , "just like it's possible ten million foot monkey on some other world, or a green dinosaur hidden in the jungles of the Phillippines..." That's a non sequitur , because I didn't ask him about those fallacies ; also if we were to ask him if he "lacks belief" or "withholds belief" in those things , he would quickly dismiss it as an outlandish absurdity? Would he request evidence for it? NO ! Because they're so ridiculous, he would automatically know this so he naturally would make a judgment on it. Hence , if the atheists say they have no position by saying they lack belief, then their position is not open to attack and examination, and they can quietly remain atheists.

Here Perplex misses the point on a bajillion fronts, but we focus on a few. First, the very asking of any “possibility” question (minus giving necessary and sufficient conditions) opens the door to a response exactly as Caleb gave – by invoking other possibles. So, his examples are certainly not non-sequiturs or “outlandish absurdities” any more than Mikey's Divine Creator! Which is the whole point! Without n-s conditions given, the context is no different from any other hypothetical, and there is no unique standard. A standard intended means one at least attach the n-s conditions, to limit possibles (or the rational constellation of such) if nothing else.

The point is that once one proffers a “possibility” basis for his claimed existent – minus n-s conditions, he leaves himself open to a retort with other possibilities lacking the same. In other words, with no n-s conditions, he discloses he doesn’t know what’s outlandish and what isn’t. Withholding belief isn’t even applicable here, either to Perplex’s example or Caleb’s, because no actual claims have been made- only hypotheticals (possibles)

This opens discussion to another very pertinent and critical point: “Possibility” statements are almost no use at all in terms of scientific or empirical testing, irrespective of secular definitions. What empirical validation employs are IMPOSSIBILITY STATEMENTS. All impossibility statements actually have far more generality and validity than possibility statements. But one must understand what this means. In science the actual, technical terms are "laws of permission" and "laws of denial". The first detail all the actions that are allowed based on the laws of physics; the latter detail all the actions disallowed.

The laws of denial are predicated on such foundational physical laws as: the laws of conservation of mass-energy, momentum and electric charge. All these assure us that NO action can take place in a closed system in which the total energy, momentum and electric charge are not conserved.

I cannot take a 2 oz. bite out of an 8 oz. apple and come back and find it weighs 10 oz.!
I cannot put 8 gal. of gas into my tank, and know my car only gets a max. of 20 miles/gallon - drive one hundred miles and find 7 gallons of gas left! I can't put an electric charge of 5 Coulombs on a surface, then come back two minutes later and find 10 Coulombs - assuming the system was closed to external influences.

Thus, certain things really are impossible! There is no getting round it, and it's definitely scientific! Thus, "perpetual motion machines" are also denied - or "impossible" - since they not only violate conservation of energy, but also specific laws of thermodynamics, e.g. the entropy law. All events in the cosmos also obey Lorentz invariance, meaning that NO object, energy or mass or information can propagate faster than the speed of light (c = 300,000 km/s)

But all of these are rendered because they have putative necessary and sufficient conditions attached. E.g. for a perpetual motion device, the necessary condition is that no entropy can be produced. The sufficient condition (say for a perpetual pulley system) is that the mechanics are designed so no energy is lost via heat or friction.

In this regard we see the question as asked by Mikey is nearly worthless, since it focuses on neither probability nor impossibility, but vague and open possibility statements that don’t even have necessary and sufficient conditions attached.

Q2 ) Do YOU know everything about the universe , and how it came into existence?

RESPONSE : Here , in his first sentence , he says , "No one knows everything about the universe, including Copernicus." Which validates my point when I said we DON'T KNOW , what we DON'T KNOW . So , again , he concedes by that first sentence that he does NOT KNOW everything about the universe , hence , God COULD exist ! -----

This, of course, is a non-sequitur. The reason is that the universe is a defined PHYSICAL entity, which we know exists! (We needn’t know everything about an entity to know it exists only that is does!) In the same way, if I observe the Sun in the sky, I know the Sun exists. I need not know everything about its internal structure, radiation processes, convection, nuclear reactions or transfer of energy to the photosphere.

In like manner, one would not be so daft as to say – asking a person “Do you know everything about the Sun”?” and if the answer is negative, following that with “Ok then God COULD exist!” It doesn’t follow. In addition, he’s mixing apples and oranges, since his God is not a physical entity so any claims made must be of a different variety and order from physical ones. Thus, because one doesn’t know everything about a physical entity, doesn’t leave any doors open for a supernatural one! That entity must have its own evidence provided on its own basis.

Q3 ) Can YOU show proof of ANYONE ( or have YOU personally ) witnessed MACRO-evolution?

MY RESPONSE : Yes , I DO remember . And YES ! I DID say that what you observed WAS MICRO-evolution - NOT MACRO-evolution ! And I stand by that answer . I'll even post my answer here in reply to your given answer . What you describe is NOT MACRO-evolution ! It's MICRO-evolution , which refers to the changes in the percentage of individuals in a population that have a particular trait . Such evolution is more properly called adaptation . In these cases , as well as the one with your fruit flies , there is no new genetic information being produced . Rather , you were simply seeing the selection of pre-existing information . These types of changes actually fit within a creationist framework in which God created different kinds of organisms with a range of variation and the ability to adapt to changes in environmental conditions . Also , see an interesting article regarding a long-running experiment trying to get fruit flies to evolve has failed ( http://www.creationsafaris.com/crev201009.htm ) .
----------------------------

In this case he repeats errors made before, not surprising never having taken a basic evolution course, far less a test, and passed it. Let’s recap for his benefit. The definition of micro-evolution from an actual text on it by an expert (Strickberger, on Evolution) is as follows:

Changes in the genetic makeup in a population that usually gives rise to differences between populations of a given species in the form of gene frequency changes or chromosomal variations.

Since the latter DO incorporate genetic changes, then these micro-evolutionary changes can ultimately accumulate and lead to taxonomic or macro-evolutionary changes. This is NOT “properly called adaptation” as he claims, because adaptation does not include gene frequency changes which signal that natural selection has become determinate in the species. Thus , it is incorrect to assert only“pre-existing information” is produced.

The creationist claim that “adaptation” (erroneously conflated with micro-evolution) fits within its perspective misses the point that this can only be valid if the genotype frequencies remain stable! But actual genetic tests shows this isn’t the case, as for Caleb’s fruit fly experiments!

As to macro-evolution, these are the necessary conditions that must apply:

1) The species’ alleles must alter over succeeding generations.

2)Increasing numbers of the favored offspring are found in successive generations,.

3) Variation must be genetically inherited. Thus, for natural selection to result in evolutionary change, the selected differences must have a genetic basis.

Unfortunately for Caleb, it isn’t proven that his fruit fly experiments would have born all three of these out- (3) is open to question. So he technically earns only half marks (if this was a test, but the pastor assures us it isn't).

Q4 ) Can "something" (ANYTHING or ANYONE) , come from "NOTHING"?

ANSWER GIVEN : The universe can, as quantum physics already shows and Copernicus has done blogs on..."

RESPONSE : OH REALLY??? Well , you better get on one side of the proverbial fence or the other , bro' - because you just CONTRADICTED YOURSELF ! Recall in Q2 you ADMITTED that "No one knows everything about the universe" - that includes YOU , bro' ! You NOW are making the unequivocal statement that you KNOW "The universe can." Which is it?
---

Here he’s mixing up logical categories again. We already showed that the question (2) to which he refers was botched by him because he committed two egregious logical errors:

1) Committed the 'One true Scotsman' fallacy by arguing that if one doesn’t know ALL there is, one doesn’t know a thing exists. But as I showed, as for the Sun, one needn’t now ALL there is to know about an entity to know it exists! I can observe the Sun in the sky, I don’t have to know all its nuclear fusion reactions to know it exists. Now granted, we don’t KNOW the cosmos came from nothing, but the evidence so far from quantum mechanics is pretty strong that it did – especially when we examine the phenomenon of pair production in the laboratory setting. This provides an excellent basis for understanding how the cosmos could have originated from nothing – which technically means a negative energy bubble.

2) Committed false analogy by placing his “divine Creator” and the universe in the same existent or claim categories, when one is supernatural and the other wholly natural-physical.

Again, his question itself is mixing up two different logical contexts, one for knowledge (which he doesn’t even MENTION in Q4) and one for capability. Thus, his emphasis and smarmy critique, tasking Caleb about knowing or not knowing is misplaced, since he never asked if he KNOWS the universe came from nothing, but rather: CAN IT or Something COME from nothing? Caleb’s answer perfectly fit into this purview, and Pastor Perplex needs to learn how to ask better questions, or better, stay out of the question –asking business until he learns something of what he’s asking about!

5a ) Do YOU have "faith" in ANYTHING or ANYONE? ( If yes , could you please say in what or whom , and WHY? )

ANSWER GIVEN : Sure! In my close friends (faith they won't stab me in the back) and in my wife and children (that they won't try to do me in for any reason).

MY RESPONSE : Ok , BUT...by your own admission here , you don't KNOW if they will "stab you in the back" or "do you in." You must have FAITH that they WON'T. So , why is a Christian's FAITH in God of any lesser importance than your "faith.
----

Once again, he’s being dishonest by not adhering to the parameters of his own questions! (Then he wonders why so few atheists, or just one – even attempt them. Well, DOH! They’re rigged!) Note his question again is simply asking DO YOU have Faith, and if so in what or whom? There is no knowledge component which is a whole different kettle of fish. In that case, he’d do better asking: Can you KNOW enough to have faith in something?

But, he didn’t ask that! Hence, it’s not kosher to try to pinion Caleb in his given honest response by using a dishonest tactic to do with knowledge. Of course, he doesn’t know – but Pastor Mikey never asked the context!

Note also how he slips in a non-sequitur question (about “a” Christian’s faith – when he hasn’t even defined which Christians he’s talking about and there are dozens, including Catholics, science of mind, Episcopalians etc.) Also, this question has nada to do with asking the generic question on whether he (caleb) has faith in anything or anyone. Again, mixing chalk and cheese.

Q6 ) Do YOU believe in reincarnation?

ANSWER GIVEN : Nope, 'cause I've seen nothing to back it up. When ya dead, ya dead.

MY RESPONSE : Here again , you allege to KNOW what happens after death . HOW? Have you died and come back to life? As I said before , my friend , ETERNITY in HELL is a long time to be WRONG !!!
----

Again, wrongo! Caleb’s not alleging at all that he KNOWS what happens after death! The question NEVER asked whether he KNOWS what happens, but what he BELIEVES will happen. So long as the Pastor mixes up his question content and can’t make up his mind what exactly he intends to ask, why should anyone even try them (one reason I recommended to Caleb to just ignore them) Note, how Pastor Perplex then drags in his Hell myths, having already cluttered the landscape by mixing up a belief question with one of knowledge. It is clear this guy has never learned the art of dialectic, and definitely needs to improve his vocabulary.

Q7 ) Do YOU believe "aliens" from another planet EVER visited earth? ( if yes , do you have ANY historical / archeological proof and/or eyewitnesses?)

ANSWER GIVEN : YES! The Roswell case gives the best illustration and lots of evidence, including sections of the ship which were subjected to high stress tests and the metal behaved like no earthly elements. All the original newspaper runs attested to a flying disc that crash landed, and the pieces - some - recovered by Jesse Marcel. You can read more about the details here, which includes a photogram of the Roswell Daily Record and its headline- as well as sketches of the aliens. Of course, once the Air Force entered the case, they destroyed the papers and further runs, confiscated as much hard evidence as they could, and then dreamed up the "weather balloon" baloney to explain it.http://www.ufocasebook.com/Roswellpictures.html MY

RESPONSE : Sorry , but I don't have enough "faith" to believe in "aliens" from outer space . As for the link you reference , it's obviously biased . The entire Roswell fiasco was a HOAX !! In a later post here I'll be showing - with verifiable references - how and why the Roswell "alien" incident came to be . But then , I can't fault you atheists too much for your "belief" in them . After all , anyone who believes humans "evolved" from "King Kong" and that "SOMETHING" can actually come from "NOTHING," I guess will believe just about any fairy tale .
--

Oh, and talking snakes, guys living in the acid of whale's bellies for 3 days, and another walking on water aren't fairy tales?

This response of pastor perplex is choice on so many levels, and we certainly can’t wait to see what he trots out to show (with verifiable references) “how and why the Roswell alien incident came to be”. But hold on to your seats, there’s likely to be a “salvation” or Christian component someplace.

In fact, having studied the Roswell incident myself(using released freedom of information documents), the site link provided by Caleb is pretty sound, and it fits in with all the accumulated evidence amassed, especially to do with the attending nurse’s account (and drawings), the newspaper account (based on first on the scene reports, before the Air Force came in and confiscated evidence – as the FBI did in the aftermath of the JFK assassination, including seizing the limo bearing bullet marks, and a curbstone near to where bystander James Tague was sprayed with cement - in the vicinity of Elm St. by the Triple Underpass. The curbstone had been hit with a bullet fragment and marked, such that it would have shown a 4th shot-making it impossible for Oswald to have been the lone assassin.)

The pastor is also clearly dissing his own brother, Jerry, who has actually documented (in an unpublished book) how he came to see actual photographic evidence of the Roswell aliens while in the Air Force in the 1960s, based at Lackland AFB in Texas.

As to the absurd “evolving from King Kong” gibberish, we don’t even dignify that with a reply. As for something coming from nothing, it isn’t a matter of belief, but basic quantum mechanics – which unfortunately the goodly pastor never took, probably because he couldn’t even pass a basic physics course!

Q8 ) All matter has energy . So , does energy NEED a "beginning," and if so , do YOU KNOW how it began?

ANSWER GIVEN : It began in the dark energy bubble that initiated the universe. See the link in Q4. No, I don't "know" it for a fact, but it's the best scientific explanation so surely beats saying "a God did it"

RESPONSE : Whoa Pardner ! You're contradicting yourself here...AGAIN !! ( see my response for Q2 ) . NOW...you state , "It began in the dark energy bubble that initiated the universe." What "dark energy bubble"? And , how did IT come into "existence"? ( Oh wait , I guess from "NOTHING"? also , huh? ) . Allow me to "educate" you here . Plain and simple, matter/energy can not come into existence. It is scientifically impossible, yet here we see everything around us, so how can that be? There are really only 3 possibilities. Option A: Everything came into existence by itself anyway, without the help of God, even though science has proven that impossible. Option B: Everything in the universe has ALWAYS existed for all of eternity, which, by the way is also shown to be scientifically impossible due to something called the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, or option C: There must be a God, a Being greater than science, who created the Laws of science and has the ability to violate them. Not only is a belief in God the only logical conclusion to draw, it's the only one scientifically possible because remember, if there is no God, the first two options are scientifically impossible according to the actual Laws of Physics. ( Duhhh...) .
------

Here, Pastor Perplex demonstrates his own voluminous ignorance again, though we mustn’t be too hard because this is one of the questions for which Caleb ought to have better elaborated the response. (But we give him a break because his area is theoretical biology and not physics) Caleb, in any case, isn’t contradicting himself because he clearly states he doesn’t know for a fact how it began, but rather is basing it on the best current scientific explanation (which also means he is consistent with what he stated in Q2)

As for dark energy and the dark energy bubble I did several blogs on this and Caleb ought to have referenced at least a couple links, eg.

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2010/09/how-could-universe-originate-from.html

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2010/09/dark-energy-overwhelms-cosmological.html

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2009/09/temporal-nonsense-from-anders.html

Note in the last, the paragraph:

"The negative pressure- vacuum bubble was no less physical than the universe it spawned on expansion – when the negative pressure fluctuated and incepted a non net-zero mass-energy effect, which result we now perceive indirectly in the cosmos accelerated expansion. In his paper, ‘Universe Before Planck Time’ (Phys. Review D, Vol. 28, No. 4), T. Padmanabhan is careful to explicate (Sec. IV) the acausal quantum and classical limits (with alpha = 0, the classical limit, and classical time, limit)."

Also, it is important (and Caleb never mentioned this) to note the dark energy bubble exists in conformal space-time, not regular- so temporally it is for all practical purposes “not existing” before, or after the Big Bang.

The Pastor then goes on a rant trying to assert what’s impossible or not. But he fails, because he doesn’t comprehend the nature of impossibility statements. To see this, let us examine his arguments and “options” given to see how he contradicts himself:

He writes:

Plain and simple, matter/energy can not come into existence. It is scientifically impossible, yet here we see everything around us, so how can that be? There are really only 3 possibilities. Option A: Everything came into existence by itself anyway, without the help of God, even though science has proven that impossible”

In fact, science has ‘proven” no such thing, nor does he given any citations to support his claim! Meanwhile, I have repeatedly given him the source paper – from a peer reviewed journal – which shows how the universe COULD come into being by itself. (The Phys. Review D paper noted above) Again, the point is: SO long as there is one valid hypothesis to show a rational –physical explanation we accept that rather than any supernatural option!

Next he scribbles:

Option B: Everything in the universe has ALWAYS existed for all of eternity, which, by the way is also shown to be scientifically impossible due to something called the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

Again, he is totally wrong as science has never shown any such thing! It is quite feasible that the universe, in a multiverse form – as Hawking’s model is based upon, could well have always existed. (He elaborates this concept in his book, The Grand Design). Apart from that the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, which I doubt this guy even studied because he’s never taken a physics course I know of, has nothing to do with it.

All the 2nd law does is give us an indicator of entropy (disorder) within a closed system, BUT – as I’ve stated before, it isn’t altogether clear the cosmos is a closed system. In addition, even a simple recycled universe model (of the Wheeler type) would refute his claims, since each new cycle ends with a collapse and new energy (from that collapse) for a new Big bang and new universe. Thus, the 2nd law is “re-processesed” with each new cycle (value of the Boltzmann constant k likely changing each time) and these cycles eliminate the problem of one closed system.

Not content with his he hangs himself on his own illogical petard:

or option C: There must be a God, a Being greater than science, who created the Laws of science and has the ability to violate them. Not only is a belief in God the only logical conclusion to draw, it's the only one scientifically possible because remember, if there is no God, the first two options are scientifically impossible according to the actual Laws of Physics. ( Duhhh...) .”

This is a non sequitur, since as I showed above, his claims of the first two options being “scientifically impossible” are bollocks. Hence, his clam that Option C is the only “scientifically possible” option remaining is pure codswallop. Indeed, since "God"as he seems to define it (supernatural) -isn’t physical- it can’t be a scientific object of inquiry in the normative sense, though we might retain it as a hypothesis, if the fundies can show us how a supernatural entity can manifest in material –physical ways (making sure to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for it)

Q9 ) You ( atheists ) allege that the Bible is basically "fiction." Do YOU ( personally ) , ALSO make the SAME claim for the Qur'an / Koran , the Book of Mormon , the Catholic "bible," etc? If not , WHY?

ANSWER GIVEN : Once again, we don't say that. What we say is that any claim made in any ancient book, bible or other, has to be parsed through the language media and historical perpective. You can't just accept any ancient words at face value, or you look like a dummy.

RESPONSE : Well , a simple comparison of the text of the Bible with the text of other religious , historical , and philosophical documents from the ancient past proves the vast superiority of the biblical record . LESS than ONE-TENTH of ONE PERCENT of the biblical text is in question ! , whereas no such accuracy of transmission exists for the Qur’an , the Mahabharata , or the Iliad .

---

Here he goes off on a tangent and doesn’t even do himself a service. The claim of less then one-tenth of one percent of the biblical text being in question, leaves totally out the context. In fact, from the Jesus seminar and other studies, in a HISTORICAL context, nearly 99.999% of the Old Testament is in question, and nearly 90% of the New. Bart D. Erhman in his “Misquoting Jesus: Who Changed the Bible and Why’ does an excellent service in revealing many of the questionable NT segments. Also, Oxford scholar Geza Vermes has a compendium at the back of his book (The Authentic Gospel of Jesus) which references passage by passage all the untrustworthy sections in the NT.

The general conclusion is that most of the Bible is allegorical, and very little historical or biographical. But this is exactly where fundamentalism parts company with rational Christianity. The latter group recognizes literal interpretation as impossible and the bible as not inerrant, the former doesn’t. But this is a feature of ALL the fundamentalisms, whether Islamic, or Jewish or Christian. So it’s actually kind of ironic and humorous that he makes a jab at the Qu’uran, when his fundie literalism is equally misplaced!

Q10 ) Do YOU ( personally ) , believe Muhammad was a man of "peace and love"?

ANSWER GIVEN : I have no beliefs on him just as I have none on Jesus Christ, or the Buddha. Since I don't believe any of those religions, my opinions of their leaders or god-men are irrelevant.
MY RESPONSE : Well , you sure could have fooled me ! If you'd like I can write a series of blog posts on just YOUR blasphemies against God by referring to Him as "tyrant," "evil," "madman," etc.. I have YET to see you blaspheme "Allah," "Muhammad," "Buddha," etc..Nor do I see you ( atheists ) exerting as much time and energy attempting to discount any other religious beliefs . WHY? Are atheists simply anti-Christian , or are y'all anti ANY religious beliefs? You also contradict yourself - AGAIN - by stating , "I have no beliefs on him just as I have none on Jesus Christ," yet , in several previous blog posts you ADMITTED that you DO believe that Jesus Christ existed , albeit denying His Deity . Every time you find yourself in the corner in theological debates , you start 'back peddling' by redefining and changing your position(s) , and of course , when all else fails , you throw up the smokescreen by invoking your Quantum Mechanics nonsense . Frankly , Christians KNOW that Christianity IS a threat to Satan and you atheists , which is why you all attempt to discredit it so much . If you were not so weak in your atheistic position , and truly did not consider Christianity a threat to it - you would simply ignore it as you do the cult religious denominations .
----

Here, clearly frustrated by encountering his intellectual superior, he goes off on a raft of tangents, while attributing to Caleb content that I rendered in past blogs (likely because he has me mixed up with Caleb or thinks Caleb is me or some such delusional schizoid ideations – claiming I answered his daft questions not Caleb.) But let’s be clear Caleb himself only answered the question as it was presented, without all the drama. By mixing Caleb’s answer with blog content I’d already given - which obviously WOULD be different – since we are two distinct people- his claims of contradiction fall on their face. Obviously, the content contradicts because two different people have two different opinions!

But, let’s turn attention to his other ancillary dreck, given he interjects it:

- The references to God as “tyrant” and “madman” were to the OT entity who as I showed, willingly slaughters people including women and children, and does it in genocidal outbursts. This isn’t “blasphemy” but calling a spade a spade.

- On spending so “much time” to discount religious beliefs. Actually we don’t, we spend time to show that religious beliefs cannot be trusted as impeccable guides to ordain our civil laws. We are not a Theocracy, not yet, and thus to the extent fundies like my bro harp and attempt to insinuate their beliefs into our lives (by trying to outlaw abortion, contraception, etc.) we must fight back and never stop fighting. Ignoring them is just what they’d like

- On JC and whether he existed. Again, he’s mixing my past blogs with Caleb’s answer here, which is how he comes to his “contradiction”. But in fact, there aren’t any regarding my statements. I’ve always said there is sufficient evidence to warrant JC was a historical person, but NOT a divine entity. There are too many other plausible explanations, including exaggerated or mistranslated accounts from the time (recall the gospels weren’t put to paper until 40 or more years after the alleged events) as well as deliberate insertions to mislead. So there is no “back peddling”.

- On quantum mechanics used as a “smokescreen” – well this is a typical whine from an ignorant person never exposed to it. But, the unassailable fact remains that QM IS the most fundamental of all the physical sciences, and is directed at the basic nature of matter, and energy and its manifestations. If one therefore discounts it, he is trying to discount 95% of all possible rational or scientific explanations. Which, of course, is exactly what I’d expect of a non-scientific fundie freak – who of course would consider the most powerful science of all “nonsense”.

I rest my case, that Pastor what's his name - Perplex or Mikey- isn't qualified to be asking any questions of gravitas whatsoever. Hell, he doesn't even know how to compose a rational, logical question!

4 More Years in Afghanistan? You Gotta Be Kidding!

Will Julian Assange of 'Wikileaks' be leaking even more documents if the Afghan quagmire continues to 2014? We hope not, and the reason being we're out so there won't be any more files to leak!

This was the word out in today's Denver Post, and it's enough to make a progressive cringe! First, how the hell is this country going to AFFORD four more years in that rathole - making it the longest war ever in U.S. history? WHERE is the money going to come from?

We've already squandered nearly $560 billion and estimates approach $1 trillion if we stopped in 2011 (the added costs from future medical, psychological care), as Obama had originally promised. (Yes, he did promise, and liberals will hold his feet to the fire on that. If he punks out, and gives in to the military assholes, you could almost make book on him being a one termer. The Left will be so deflated by this on top of everything else: failure to shut Guantanomo, possible punting on the Bush tax cuts, health care weakened by no public option, appointing a Bushite in charge of the DEA when he said he'd go easy on medical MJ, etc. that 9 of 10 will wait out 2012 like they did this year's midterms. Don't make so many promises you can't deliver, Mr. President!)

Unknown to most Americans too, those especially who love to spout the "red, white and blue" and also get their panties in a snit about fiscal "responsibility" - most of the Afghan funding is off the books! The regular military budget is nearly $570 billion a year (way too high as it is, higher than the next 45 nations combined- which is a crime). The approvals for Afghan funding meanwhile have been via "supplementals" which are not strictly included as part of the annual budget proper. Thus, the true military expenditures each year are now more accurately approaching $750 billion when those off-balance sheet supplementals are factored in.

So, think about this now: if this farce of an occupation is allowed to go on for four more years, that is an estimated $200 billion a year in supplementals. With existing debt interest tossed in, it;s closer to $225 billion a year. That translates into a total of 4 x $225 billion - $900 billion, that will have to be paid for by getting more loans from the Chinese. Oh, no you say? Then show me where taxes are being increased anywhere to pay for this folly! Every other program, including extending unemployment insurance benefits, and not making cuts to food stamps - seems to require balancing cuts elsewhere- yet the military walks away scot free. How the hell is that???

At no time, not during Bush Jr's tenure, or during Obama's, has one cent been added to the tax rates to pay for the two occupations. Current estimates now put the total cost of both at over $3.3. trillion by the time everything is ended. That is $3.3 trillion that could have gone to repairing our infrastructure, or implementing a single payer health care plan, as opposed to an insurance company-co-opted health insurance reform plan.

While most of those in power refuse to openly acknowledge this horrific squandering of national resources for a state-building folly that'll end just like 'Nam, at least Nobel Peace laureate Oscar Arias is saying something. In a recent Denver Post piece ('Nobel Laureat Lashes Out', Nov. 17, p. 2B) he's quoted as saying:

"You need to change your value system. It's not fair for the U.S. to spend, on arms and weapons, so much money and then not spend on health care the money that is needed....Our experience shows that security does not lie in weapons or fences or armies."

Arias went on to note that a 25% cut in today's estimated $1.5 trillion in global miltiary expenditures could fund 1.9 billion laptop computers, covering every child in the developing world. Just a 10% cut could fund scholarships for 153 million needy students. Barely one fifth of one percent could fund a safe home for every Haitian family and one-fifth more, proper sewage and water systems so no more cholera can devastate them.

As far as the U.S. military budget, Arias suggested cutting it by as much as 10%. He obviously isn't factoring in the supplementals that are breaking the bank, putting us ever more in hock to the Chinese. Talk about false security! It could be cut by 50% and still be the best military in the world, especially if even half of the 1000 foreign bases were closed. We simply cannot afford the same military overstretch that brought down the Romans. Looking for new enemies to wage war against will only hasten our demise. As Arias put it:

"You have enemies in Afghanistan and Iraq...well, then make more friends instead of fighting your couple of enemies"

Of course, he forgets that some numbskulls actually want to start another war with Iran, which will really sink us into oblivion.

It seems President Dwight D. Eisenhower's warning of the "Garrison state" (in his April 16, 1953 address) is still going unheeded, as too many presidents have been more pawns of the military -industrial complex than their masters. In his speech Ike sounded the dangers of a mindset that enabled a broad political process that deliberately nurtured anxiety in order to procure swollen military budgets. Ike feared these would lead inevitably to economic stagnation and constraints on freedom. As he pointedly noted in his address:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies- in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

It's not very often in the history of this universe that a Republican President could demonstrate such profoud insight - but Ike did here. Would that the current lot (Dems and repugs) had one tenth his integrity and could see as he did how the current quagmires are bleeding us dry.

If they did, we'd not now be faced with what amounts to an ongoing "theft" from the poor, the medically uninsured, the chronically unemployed and seniors without the health care and prescriptions they need. Not to mention- responsibility to repair a crumbling infrastructure of bridges, sewer –water systems that is a national disgrace.

We have misplaced priorities.
