The Basis For Exploding Medical Costs Is The Inadequacy of Supply - Of Nurses, Drs., Medical Specialists - I.e. Immigrants!

Trump and his cabal probably don't know that there are 59 million caregivers in this country, most unpaid. He also probably doesn't know that foreign-born workers are the lifeblood of paid caregiving in the United States. More than 820,000 immigrants provide long-term care services in the direct-care work force (including aides and nurses), according to KFF. Foreign-born workers account for 28 percent of personal care workers and 40 percent of home health aides, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This is relevant now that at least one Wall Street Journal column ('Boosting Demand Won't Fix Affordability') Nov. 28, p. A13) has noted the obvious: that the primary bugbear with medical care affordability is lack of appropriate supply, not demand. What is needed in the health care realm is more supply in terms of workers: Doctors, specialists, nurses, nurse practitioners, home health aides, nursing home assistants. But also access to resources- such as the brachytherapy afterloader that delivered my prostate cancer radiation treatment in September, 2012, as well as the 3D staging biopsy - which was the necessary prelude to focal cryotherapy in 2017.

As the author of the WSJ piece points out:

"If Americans want more access to healthcare and housing at lower prices, Washington must focus on expanding supply.  For healthcare, this means reforming licensing to increase the number of medical practitioners."

But even reforming licensing means that years of higher education or training are needed, and we have a rapidly aging population that can't wait for such care to materialize, say in the next decade. They need it now! High demand for such workers is already causing shortages in home-based and institutional care alike, with the situation on track to get worse.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for care aides will rise 17 percent over the next decade, making it one of the occupations with the most growth.

As Dotard Trump and his OberSturmfuhrer Stephen Miller throttle the flow of immigrants into the United States, families are likely to have more and more difficulty finding help. And hospitals are going to have more and more difficulty finding quality nurses, even after Trump relegated "nurses to low class" work status. See e.g.

In addition, the orange orang and his anti-immigration morons have put new barriers on a type of visa that “brought in a lot of nurses from the Philippines,” said Ms. Smith Sloan. Facing access barriers and a hostile climate in the United States, those nurses are likely to head for more welcoming countries, such as Canada, Germany and Australia, she said. “The more restrictive we are, the more it’s going to hurt us in the long run.”

Already, the cancellation of the temporary protected status of hundreds of thousands of migrants is causing upheaval. “We’re seeing a jarring, sudden loss of workers, of people who are being sent back” to their home countries, said Katie Smith Sloan, the head of LeadingAge, an association of community-based organizations that provide services for seniors. In addition to creating gaps in staffing, “the relationships that they’ve built with the residents and clients that they’re serving are just broken,” she said.

Further disruptions loom. For instance, this morally bankrupt administration led by the biggest buffoon and wannabe tyrant  (and actual traitor) on the planet is now planning the daft move of punishing nearly all the nations from which medical staff come from.  The deranged moves include:

Even last Friday's WSJ editorial (p. A14) criticized this rash reactionary move, pointing out:

"Tens of thousands are building new lives here in peace and are contributing to their communities.   They shouldn't be blamed for the violent act of one man"

And we've since learned it's not just Afghans who've been targeted by Trump but a whole swath of "third world" nations' immigrants this deviant deems unacceptable for entry. Again, the harm inflicted will be irreparable, not just in the medical supply (of labor) arena, but in our housing construction markets, agriculture and child and senior care.  Make no mistake there is no good that will come from this orange rodent's insanity given it hits directly at the potential supply of medical specialists as well as nurses, nursing aides, nursing home assistants etc. So all these costs will explode, and who will pay? Why the American taxpayer as s/he will also pay for Trump's $500m expanded ballroom add-on to the White House.

We are in a sorry and sad predicament with this demented looneytune, folks, and not just given his is committing extra-judicial murders with his small boat attacks, while he has pardoned one of the most violent narco- state terrorists ever (Juan Orlando Hernandez).
