Trump Now Poses Greatest Security Threat To Election And Cannot Be Allowed To Carry Out A Coup

"Nineteen summers ago, when counterterrorism analysts warned of a coming attack by al‑Qaeda, they could only guess at a date. This year, if election analysts are right, we know when the trouble is likely to come. Call it the Interregnum: the interval from Election Day to the next president’s swearing-in. It is a temporal no-man’s-land between the presidency of Donald Trump and an uncertain successor—a second term for Trump or a first for Biden. The transfer of power we usually take for granted has several intermediate steps, and they are fragile."Barton Gellman. 'The Election That Could Break America'

"He's criminalizing dissent on one level. With the FBI, he's attempting rhetorically to criminalize the execution and mechanics of the rule of law.  It's not a heck of a lot more complicated than that... He's using a charged term to create a sense of anxiety and paranoia to get his supporters in a place where assent for Trump is a patriotic act.  By doing so he's throwing 243 years of constitutional history away.

The framers had this right. They were worried about demagogues, they were worried about exactly this type of person." - Historian John Meacham, in May, 2019 (on MSNBC)

"Foreign actors seeking to do us harm will seek to undermine our confidence in the election by telling us that it is a hoax and any ballots counted after election day are some sort of scam. Foreign actors seeking to do us harm will stoke that - as per the FBI statement. Trump is doing exactly what the FBI just warned us is being done -  by foreign powers hostile to us-   trying to undo our democracy. They're doing it covertly, our president is doing it out loud right in front of us. "
Rachel Maddow, last night, MSNBC

Thanks to a new Atlantic article by staff writer Barton Gellman, e.g.

we are now alerted to the potential for  an attempted Trump coup on November 3rd.    This is not being histrionic or hyperbolic, the threat is as real as the first splitting chest pains preceding a heart attack.   As Gellman warns us, refocusing our attention after so much has been written about Trump simply refusing to leave office:

"The worst case, however, is not that Trump rejects the election outcome. The worst case is that he uses his power to prevent a decisive outcome against him. If Trump sheds all restraint, and if his Republican allies play the parts he assigns them, he could obstruct the emergence of a legally unambiguous victory for Biden in the Electoral College and then in Congress. He could prevent the formation of consensus about whether there is any outcome at all. He could seize on that uncertainty to hold on to power.

Trump’s state and national legal teams are already laying the groundwork for postelection maneuvers that would circumvent the results of the vote count in battleground states. Ambiguities in the Constitution and logic bombs in the Electoral Count Act make it possible to extend the dispute all the way to Inauguration Day, which would bring the nation to a precipice."

This ought to scare the bejeezus out of every sane and sentient American - at least those not numbered among the Trump zombies.  We already know the swine fouling the White House is indirectly responsible for over 200,000 dead Americans because of his mishandling of the Covid 19 pandemic.  But now we know he wants to kill American democracy as well in the coming general election by carrying out a coup.  Indeed, he is already in the process of doing it with every attack he makes on mail -in ballots, and with the very words uttered last night:

"Get rid of the ballots, and there won't be a transition but a continuation of power."

This was in response to a reporter's question of whether this fungal imp would respect  peaceful transition of power, i.e. if he loses. Just Trump babbling with no import?  Nope, as Maddow put it last night:

"This isn't some inarticulate blurt or verbal misfire from the president speaking at the podium at the White House tonight.  This is what he is saying consistently now over the last few days.  This is what he means. This is not verbal glitching or idle musings. This is insistently and consistently where we are at now.  Two hundred and forty -four years to stand this Republic up, four years to cut it down."

Indeed! And Maddow is spot on correct about his intentions.  There is no "bungling" of a response as blogger Cody Fenwick claims.  (See link below).  What Trump means when he barks "get rid of the ballots"  is that he  intends to prevent as many mail- in ballots as possible from being counted, to give him his best chance to sneak into power again. A veritable coup, and as Gellman's Atlantic piece notes, he has the machinery in place to carry it out - read it.  Let's recall  here Russian -born journalist Masha Gessen's essay Autocracy: Rules for Survival wherein she warned:

Whenever you find yourself thinking, or hear others claiming, that he is exaggerating, that is our innate tendency to reach for a rationalization.”

Former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice - in a NY Times piece about national division, polarization - already called out Trump as the  national security threat he is to our election:

"Trump daily tosses gasoline and matches on the bone-dry tinder of American politics.  Whether reprising discredited eugenics theories of white racial superiority, stoking fears of “low income” people invading white suburbs, demanding “patriotic education” in public schools that whitewashes slavery and institutionalized racism, falsely declaring mail-in voting corrupt or expressing contempt for “blue state” America, Mr. Trump seeks to perpetuate himself in power at great cost to our national cohesion. No wonder Russian state media and politicians are gleefully predicting an imminent civil war in the United States.."

Sadly, this same security threat also has useful idiots in the media (like Peggy Noonan, WSJ, Sept. 19-20, p. A13, 'Get Ready For An Election Crisis') who try to   denigrate or downgrade the value of mail voting compared to voting in person at a polling place.  These fellow misinformational travelers (of Trump) insinuate we choose not to vote in person because of "inconvenience" or we fail to perceive the "civic and ancestral nature of voting in person."   Actually, it's a lot simpler: we have always voted by mail in a state for which casting mail ballots has attained a gold standard, e.g.

So why the hell do anything differently, just to posture as a paper patriot, especially when a pandemic is raging and positive infection rates are up in 33 states?  (Also given wifey and I are both past 70 and vulnerable citizens - for different reasons.)

There are ways this electoral calamity and national debacle can be headed off but it will require all 'hands on deck' - namely the anti-Trump coalition making sure they have their act together. The first priority is ensure you are registered to vote - wherever that may be.  Second, if you need a mail ballot or absentee ballot now is the time to request one if your state isn't automatically sending them out like here in Colorado. (Where wifey and me are both proud mail- in voters and have been for nearly 7 years.)   Then, be sure to vote as early as possible - whether using mail in ballots or going to the polls in person.  The earlier you go the better, to avoid mishaps or long lines, wait times.

Also, it's time to leave the purist pussyfooting behind.

You're maybe a  young voter who's about as excited about Joe Biden as a bowl of cold porridge?  Grow the hell up, put on your big boy pants, hold your nose and vote for him anyway. This ain't a prom king contest, for god's sake, and no one's emotions ought to determine a vote.   Especially when said vote might avert a crisis that brings the country down.

The key then to routing this pestilence - this proto-Nazi scum authoritarian and his cabal,  including Bill Barr, Lindsey Graham, Stephen Miller and the other vipers- - is a historic  voter turnout delivering a massive landslide.  Also, taking from 6 to 7 Senate seats from the Reepos in the process. We need to make the bastards pay for rushing to fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat. We also need to have serious numbers that will make it difficult for Capt. Bonespurs to contest.   As it is, true to his M.O. now he will try to halt any continuing vote count on Nov. 3rd, given mail ballots will almost certainly be still trickling in. But this roach can't be permitted to stop the ongoing righteous count (which he will certainly try to impugn as a "scam" or "rigged").  And if he tries to pull in a "kangaroo" court tactic to validate his theft, we need all citizens to take to the streets by the MILLIONS - not thousands.

But let's be clear that evicting this criminal scum will take more than will power or even numbers.  It will take ultimate attention to the voting process - especially in completing a mail -in or absentee ballot.  There is NO room for fuck ups!  As Michael Waldman from the Brennan Center for Justice explained on ALL In last night:

"All of us a citizens have to do a bit more to make sure we are ready,  especially that we are registered and that our vote counts."

As Mr. Waldman observed "all of us citizens"  includes the media, which needs to be smarter about reporting on election night.  No more "suspense calls" or "this just in" egging viewers on to believe events might wrap up by midnight and a winner called.  NO, they likely won't, so don't create the expectation.  That plays into Dotard's paws.

Making sure your vote counts in this election will mean tracking your mail ballot online if you need to (only 4 states don't allow this: Texas, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri.)  It also means make sure your ballot is signed, and also you don't forget to put the sealed ballot into the regular mail envelope - thus avoiding the notorious "naked ballot" - which is unlikely to get counted in many states.  To plan your vote in a competent manner the site below will be of inestimable value:

Failure to effectively  act in concert to dispel this venal virus from power will be a pox on all of our lives - and our nation - for the remainder of time.   We already know from history what transpired when too many foolish Germans let Adolf Hitler crash the corridors of power in the then Weimar Republic.  Within a short time of being made Chancellor, Hitler forced through the Enabling Act, i.e.

http://www.dw.com/en/the-law-that-enabled-hitlers-dictatorship/a-16689839

And that marked the end of Germany's experiment in democracy at that time. It would take a world war and the loss of more than 60 million lives to restore it.

Peggy Noonan Uses "Godfather Pt. II" Script To Claim Trump's Insult Of the Fallen Was Merely A Case Of "Family Loyalty"

As I noted in previous posts,  WSJ columnist Peggy Noonan can no longer be trusted to provide a rational or halfway objective take on Trump.  Noonan, in a misfire last month ('The Democrats Miss The Meaning' Aug. 22-23, p. A13):
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-democrats-miss-the-meaning-11597980333

claimed that the Dems at their convention "beat the crap out of the country" -   which was a gross misinterpretation.   As I had to point out in my Aug. 27 post, they in fact,  beat the crap out of what TRUMP has let the country become. As Tim O'Brien  aptly pointed out (Bloomberg News):

"Trumpism has fostered a cult of personality around Trump, allowing him to posture as the final arbiter of truth and guardian of the downtrodden. But division, chaos an disrepair - and the corruption of the American experiment - are the long term consequences."

Hence, no good thing can really be said of our nation until and unless the Trump pestilence  is totally eliminated. Only then can we rebuild the nation to what it was,  what it could be.  Even now as I write this Trump is soiling more of the office of the presidency with his lies and flouting of norms, including saying (yesterday at an ABC Town Hall) "I didn't downplay the virus, I upgraded it!"  in answer to an undecided voter's question.  WTF?  Does this walking turd think voters are stupid?  They already heard him admit to downplaying it on tape!  (Thanks to Bob Woodward, author of 'RAGE' - which I am now reading.)

A day earlier, at a California forum in the midst of the state's wild fires, the little orange fucktard actually said: it "will get cooler, wait and see"  and also that the fires were from poor forest management.   Then having his deranged mutt and henchman Michael Caputo troll about "left wing hit squads"  threatening Trump's zombies near the election.  Oh yeah, and CDC scientists committing "sedition" against Trump.

Then you also have the spectacle of a notorious criminal like Roger Stone (whose sentence was commuted by Trump, i.e.  for Stone's nefarious involvement in the Russia conspiracy). No surprise Stone is now  demanding Trump declare martial law for the election and lock up Dems.  And let's not forget a toady like Bill Barr fouling the DOJ and about to let another lackey - John Durham- release a twisted and bogus "report" on the Russia probe.  By 'twisted' I mean going after the investigators (FBI, Mueller, etc.) when in fact the Trump campaign's cooperation with the Russians was masterfully exposed in the  recently released  966 page final instalment of the Senate Intelligence Committee report, entitled :  Volume 5: Counterintelligence Threats and Vulnerabilities,”

But all that isn't enough for the hare-brained Noonan (who temporarily mustered enough brain power  6 weeks ago to say Trump ought to resign) reverting to blind Trump love in her latest twaddle

Therein seeking to defend Trump's mocking of the fallen by appeal to the "family" script for The Godfather Pt. II.  Before that, Peggy trots out friends of hers who confide in her they still plan to vote for Trump despite acknowledging - as one did that:

"Donald Trump is a boorish, narcissistic, self aggrandizing, petulant child who has sown significant discord among my fellow citizens.  He has little knowledge of his current job description or limitations.”

No, you can't make this shit up.  But one supposes Peggy is happy to expose friends even dumber and less insightful than she is.   It's all relative in Trump World, after all. This turkey she quotes then has the absolute temerity to assert one reason for his misgivings about Biden is that he "does exhibit a degree of obvious cognitive impairment".   Which is choice given Trump - aka the Dotard- can barely pass a basic test for  early Alzheimer's patients.  And who, in the real realm we live in, actually believes the California wildfires  aren't from climate change,  adding, "Yes it will get cooler you'll see."    For which any thinking citizen would instantly award an IQ of ....10.  Biden, the supposed mental slacker, at least had the insight, awareness and gumption to refer to Trump as a "climate arsonist" which is what he is.  Give him four more years and watch the remainder of the country either burn up or be flooded out - as he trashes even more environmental regulations and puts more toadies into agencies - like he just  did at the NOAA.   See  e.g.

But Noonan outdoes herself for pure stupidity, nonsense and gullibility when she devotes an entire fourth of her  WSJ column to the Godfather  II script to provide fictional support for Dotard denigrating troops.  I reproduce the relevant section below for readers directly from the paper.   I do this because it has more impact than reading the words from the link above.   Again she is using this as counterpoint to the Atlantic piece by Michael Goldberg, e.g.

She is resorting to this pathetic ploy to try to make the specious case that - like Sonny's family loyalty emphasis in the Godfather II movie-   Trump is also about family loyalty which trumps any military service, or higher respect for the military.

Read her words carefully, and you will see she takes this fictional script seriously and as a worthwhile template to defend (or at least justify)  Trump's deplorable words in referring to active military (and fallen military) as "suckers" and "losers".   Indeed, Noonan ends her idiocy writing this:

"Mr. Trump would know that scene well. Perhaps it gave him a higher rationale for claiming bone spurs in his deferment during Vietnam. It wasn’t selfishness, disagreement with the war, cowardice. It was loyalty to family."

Again, this is verbatim from this WSJ harpy's loopy piece.  Oh no, it wasn't cowardice, despite the fact that Trump got his "bonespurs"  I-Y exemption from a note written by a quack. Not from actually having to undergo a full  4 ½   hour draft physical as I did in March, 1965 (sent the notice to report -to the shock of Biever Hall dorm mates -  while in the middle of my 2nd semester as a Loyola University freshman.)

And lordy be, it wasn't selfishness that led to his calling the fallen at Belleau Wood "losers" and "suckers" - it was merely "loyalty" to his family.  If Noonan really believes this she ought to resign her columnist position instantly.  Oh wait, she is in the op-ed pages of the WSJ -  which editorial board Joe Scarborough unleashed a classic rant against barely a week ago.

The country is going to hell in a proverbial hand basket thanks to Trump and his gangsters, and Peggy Noonan prefers we worry more about Joe Biden and the Dems being "socialists".   While giving cover to Trump's abominable dismissing of military war dead,  using  a fictional Mafia movie script.

Pardon me while I barf.

Trump Bets On 'Law & Order' And Swing Voters To Grab Another 4 Years? Beyond Unthinkable

"The president and his campaign are trying to project the sense of unease and violence taking place under his reign onto a hypothetical Biden administration—including by using footage of protests not in the U.S., but in Barcelona.   Is this the sign of a failing campaign deeply behind in the polls, responsible for an unprecedentedly disastrous response to a pandemic and a tone-deaf answer to protests against police violence? Yes, certainly. But there’s also a deeper subtext: Trump is implicitly promising a no-holds-barred authoritarianism if he wins a second term."   David Atkins, 'Trump's Message Isn't Confused. He's Promising A Dictatorship', Smirkingchimp.com

"The Republican party claims to be a party of law and order. But respect for law and order does not consist of what you can get away with.  The GOP's cynically illegal acts offend our core principles of democracy." -  Letter writer in Denver Post

Amidst the holocaust of erosion in national honor, unity, truth and decency that has been the Trump criminal cabal, it is unthinkable they could snare another 4 years based on "law and order".    And yet a WSJ article from today (p. A4) poses that as a potential reality, e.g.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-bets-on-law-and-order-message-to-sway-swing-voters-11598673661

Excerpt:

"With Mr. Trump trailing the former vice president in national polls, and by a smaller margin in many battleground states, his team is banking that the chaotic images from places such as Kenosha, Wis., and Portland, Ore., won’t just rally their base, but sway undecided voters and suburban voters who had been moving away from Mr. Trump. “The more chaos and anarchy and vandalism and violence reigns, the better it is for the very clear choice on who’s best on public safety and law and order,” Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News this week."

Law  and order?  Trump?  This is a guy who's paid hush money to porn stars, used his office to get dirt on political opponents (using other nations like the Ukraine) and openly conspired with the Russkies to toss the 2016 election his way, as a recently released Senate intel report confirms.  This is a dirtbag surpassing all historical dirtbags in degeneracy as well as pathology.  Well, okay, maybe with the exception of Adolf Hitler!

Even given that up to 60 percent of swing voters are known as "low information"  (i.e. get most of their news from Facebook or other social media) it is incomprehensible they would bite on the above Kellyanne Conway dreck and vote the most lawless white trash in U.S.  history back into office for another chaotic, hideous and LAWLESS term.

A Biden presidency would usher in "more chaos, anarchy and vandalism"? Hello!  That is happening NOW under Trump!  Hence, as Chris Hayes put it on 'All In' Friday night, "the greatest  political Jedi mind trick ever would be to get enough people to believe the chaos we now see under Trump is somehow connected to Biden - or will be."

To quote Janice: "It would take an especially low I.Q. to believe that!"  Yeah, but no one ever lost money - as H.L. Mencken once wrote - by underestimating the intellect of the American voter.   That includes believing that the social unrest widespread now is somehow the Democrats' fault when pro-Nazi and KKK  prez Trump has fanned the flames of bigotry to the point of encouraging right wing vigilantes to show up at peaceful protests and incite violence - by displaying long guns and even firing them.

Are undecided voters truly dumb enough to put this infernal maggot back into office when they have to know deep down he will only make things worse? Especially the U.S. response to the pandemic - which I already predicted will see more fatalities than the Civil War deaths (675,000) if Trump gets in again. DO the 'swing' voters really want that, as well as the unending chaos, rage tweeting and FOX TV -watching that marks Trump's existing presidency, far less another term?   Can they really abide another ten million jobs lost and a total cratering of the economy into a Depression because Trump and his cabal still haven't dealt with the pandemic?

Clueless Peggy Noonan, vying for the journalist 'weasel of the year' award, scribbled in her latest WSJ column re: the RNC - (Aug. 29-30, p. A13):

"The Republicans confronted what the Democrats at their convention glossed over: rising crime, looting and rioting in city protests."

Conveniently omitting the vicious right wing elements who've descended on the peaceful 1st amendment protected protests, in order to wreak havoc, violence and even deaths - using the peaceful protests as shields.  The Denver Post drew attention to this in a piece (Aug. 28, p. 5A) noting how in the very minutes after the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, right wing sites were summoning  "militias" to  travel to Kenosha  - and use the ruse of "protecting businesses" to arm themselves and shoot protesters.   Well, Kyle Rittenhouse, a self -professed pro-Trump punk heeded the call to arms, traveled to Kenosha from his home in Illinois, and blew away two protesters (one of whom was attempting to stop him after he'd already fired off a few rounds).

This deranged right wing imp actually paraded along an avenue in Kenosha with his long gun in the open with nary a cop trying to stop him - and certainly not firing seven rounds into his back like they did with Blake.

Clearly demonstrating one set of laws for white punk right wingers, another for black men instantly marked as public enemy No.1 for allegedly holding a knife.  How many other KKK'ers, Aryan Nation creeps, Proud Boys, Boogie Bois et al were in Kenosha that night, we have no way of knowing. More than likely, as Janice opined, the others went into hiding or left after the Illinois terrorist (Rittenhouse) fired off his rounds killing two.  But does Peggy Noonan factor in any of this? Hell no.

She also has the nerve to write (ibid):

"Republicans hit on the one shared fear shared equally now by the rich, the poor and the middle: that when you call 911 you have to go to voicemail."

Again displaying a cluelessness unbecoming of a journalist.   If she'd done even limited research she might have been able to trace that defect to the lack of funding for public - state and local- emergency and other services.  That was earmarked in the HEROES act, but Mitch McConnell has sat on it, refusing to let it pass.  The lack of action has caused state and local economies - subject to Covid lockdowns - to crater leaving precious little in the 'pot'.  Yet Noonan mentions none of this.  However, I do give her props for at least writing:

"This country is full of law -abiding people of all colors who are appalled by Donald Trump.  It is political malpractice to push them toward him."

Indeed it is.   So that means when writing your op-ed columns to deliver the details of the truth, not the "post truth" Trumpie version of events!

As I wrote in a previous post, "no good thing can really be said of our nation until and unless the Trump interregnum is totally canceled, extirpated." Why is this? It's because Trump and his cabal have turned the state into a criminal enterprise and which promises to metastasize if he's given a 2nd term, out of voter ignorance, laziness (not voting) or indifference.     A core problem also, which resides mainly in the media, is that for decades Western legal thought had viewed the state as the ultimate guarantor of safety.   This is why Obama and other Dem critics of Trump have echoed the same refrain, "A president has one job to do, to protect the American people".  Well, not just the president but the whole infrastructure with which he governs (including agencies like DOJ, FDA, FBI, CIA, etc.)  as well as congress.

The problem is that the U.S.  media, as well as many legal theorists (and even some historians),  have problems when a developed state - like the U.S. - itself turns into a criminal entity.   This is beyond their imagination despite the fact it already happened when - under Adolf Hitler- the German state  became the agent of criminality as well as the principal perpetrator of crimes, e.g. the slaughter of 6 million Jews and many others.   Most distressing to read was the opening paragraph of a recent review on the book, 'Hitler- Downfall: 1939-1945', in The Denver Post, e.g.

"The impulsiveness and grandiosity, the bullying and vulgarity, were obvious from the beginning.  If anything, they accounted for Adolf Hitler's anti-establishment appeal for Germany's unpopular conservative elites.  Hitler's energy and theatrics made him an enticing partner when they appointed him Chancellor in 1933.  But anyone who thought Hitler and the Nazis would rise to the occasion were summarily purged from the system as an utter impossibility became indomitable reality: The Weimar Republic had become the Third Reich.

It would take another world war, a genocide and millions of dead before the dictatorship finally collapsed in 1945, a full 12 years after Hitler was invited into power.""

A kind of repeat of history is on the verge of happening again with Trump. if U.S. citizens become too besotted by fear to think clearly, or believe this criminal tyrant in waiting really has their interests - and safety - at heart.   Fortunately, the distinction is we have the chance for a do-over of the horrific mistake that brought Trump to power in 2016.  The Germans didn't once Hitler was appointed Chancellor.  But we cannot afford to fuck this up, not again!

The fact of over 180,000 dead from the pandemic ought to convince any thinking - hell sentient person-  that Trump is not their friend.  Or their protector. He is their Alpha predator merely waiting for the chance to rip their throats out.

The "Democrats Miss The Meaning?" Uh, NO, Peggy Noonan Misses The Meaning - Blinded By The Trumpism Mind Virus

As I noted in previous posts, it is often amusing to see the lengths to which conservative writers will bend themselves into pretzels to try to criticize the Brat -in -chief, but without upsetting his brainwashed deplorables, otherwise known as the MAGA Walking dead, i.e.

Image result for Trump zombies images
In a way this "tiptoeing"  approach is understandable given that each time Trump
gaslights or dispatches another dog whistle his lapdogs are sure to growl, bark and maybe even bite. They also have been shown to have a low tolerance to op-ed writers (even in the WSJ) who don't kiss Trump's butt....errr, "ring" with the proper obeisance.

So it is understandable WSJ op-ed columnist Peggy Noonan ('The Democrats Miss The Meaning' Aug. 22-23, p. A13):

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-democrats-miss-the-meaning-11597980333

would tread carefully, but in this case to the point of contradiction, confusion and utter absurdity.   On the one hand we can applaud her effort to give credit where it is due, in the handling of the Democratic National Convention and its "Zoom" formula.  As Chris Hayes put it last Friday on 'All In: This is what you have when you are in the middle of a pandemic.  This is the new normal"

Indeed, so it isn't necessary to begin one's column writing:

"To be fair in critiquing certain public events you have to be like a judge in the Olympics and factor in degree of difficulty. No one had ever done a Zoom convention before, so no one knew how to do it. Should there be a host each night? Should it be an earnest actress? Does that make us look shallow? Do we want to look shallow?  What hadn’t been done before was done rather poorly, with high schlock content. You got the impression no one creative or daring was authorized to be either."...
Hmmmm.... sour grapes to say the least.

In fact, given the limitations it was a resounding success, all Peggy's twaddle to the  contrary. It was perhaps the "gold standard" for a convention conducted in the middle of a pandemic with only some minor peanut gallery complaints, e.g. the Dems didn't allot enough time for AOC (she did get ample for what she had to do), and there was no Julian Castro  (Castro turned down the invitation to speak).  Other than that the showcasing of diverse people was nothing short of stellar and we especially enjoyed Obama's takedown of the bloated orange fungus fouling the White House, Michelle Obama's warning, and the roll call of the states. The visual for that bested anything seen in historical conventions.

At least Peggy and I agreed on Barack Obama's masterful speech, as she wrote:

"Barack Obama's speech will stick in history, it won't just slide away. No former president has ever publicly leveled anything like this criticism at a sitting successor."

Noting accurately how Trump "never took the job seriously" and never "grew into the office of the presidency".  How could he,  watching TV  (FOX)  seven hours s day and tweeting nonstop the another three?   As NY Times columnist David Brooks described it:

"His speech was fiercely pro-American and fiercely anti-Donald Trump, showing that to be fiercely pro-American you have to be fiercely anti-Donald Trump."

Well, because Trump is the archetypal anti-American, ready to praise Putin and Russia at the drop of a hat but willing to tear down every constitutional norm and principle that makes this country great.  SO it is cognitively dissonant at one point to read in Noonan's essay:

"Apart from the We the People gauziness there was a nonstop hum of grievance at the convention. To show their ferocious sincerity in the struggle against America's injustices, most of the speakers thought they had to beat the crap out of the country."

Which is, alas, exactly the inverse take to what was said. Rather, the speakers highlighted TRUMP'S injustices done in America's name!  From separating migrant infants from parents and locking them up, to allowing a storm trooper   attack on peaceful protesters, both in D.C. (to enable Dotard to hold a fake bible as a PR stunt) and in Portland.  The mission and portrayal then wasn't to "beat the crap out of the country" but to beat the crap our of what TRUMP has let the country become.  As Tim O'Brien has aptly pointed out (Bloomberg News):

"Trumpism has fostered a cult of personality around Trump, allowing him to posture as the final arbiter of truth and guardian of the downtrodden. But division, chaos an disrepair - and the corruption of the American experiment - are the long term consequences."

Hence, no good thing can really be said of our nation until and unless the Trump interregnum is totally canceled, extirpated. Only then can we rebuild the nation to what it was,  what it could be.  Right now, with the Trump cancer we are pitied around the world, as we should be.

Trumpism then has defiled not only the office of the presidency, but the government at large - undermining every agency with Trump toadies, from the FDA, to EPA, to USPS,  CDC, DOJ and HHS -  thereby ripping asunder the nation's aspirations and principles as a whole.  See e.g.

One wonders why this is so difficult for Noonan to process, then one realizes she's trying to walk a weasel's 'tightrope' and not offend Trump's deplorables too much before the RNC.

So it is also choice to see her ask: "Do Democrats understand how hunkered down many people feel, psychologically and physically, over the past six months??"

Of course, Peggy, since they have been hunkered down too! Dems are not space aliens walking among us and impervious to the slings and arrows of Covid 19.   They are every bit equally affected, from determining how much elderly relatives need to be protected to how soon their kids can return to real classrooms.   But they are also perceptive enough to know this hunkering down, and re-hunkering down, did not have to be this traumatic. Not if Dotard Trump the wannabe dictator had followed a coordinated strategy to contain the virus - as opposed to pissing the time away.   We know this because it's been well-documented, e.g.

Excerpt:

" In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion."
