Why Holman Jenkins & His WSJ Wrecking Crew Want To Get You Back To Work Prematurely

In  what Janice calls "Americans' last IQ test"  we beheld Capt. Bonespurs bellowing about getting the U.S. economy open before May.  Fortunately, the CEOs of major companies in a meeting with the imp pushed back, saying 'Whoa! We need lots more testing first!"  This echoes Dr. Tara Narulla's warning this a.m. - to those who have ears to listen and a brain to process:

"We need tests to be ubiquitous, efficient and to have a rapid turnaround time.  Without that we're really flying blind - and it's not just a question of opening the economy but keeping the economy open. If we can do that and fix the problems on the supply side then hopefully we can reopen the economy and keep it open."

Clearly, Dr. Tara gets it - like nearly all medical specialists and especially the epidemiologists.  She gets that the economy cannot be prematurely opened - without enormous viral blowback  i.e. until an effective mass testing program is underway. This is one which can test 20 % or more of the population, as opposed to the barely 1 percent thus far.  But while she gets it, and millions of Americans do as well, we behold a build up of  irrational impatience in a number of places, from Vegas to Lansing, Michigan, even as the mitigation is beginning to work.  For example, we saw last night and this a.m parading Tea baggers holding 'Don't Tread on Us!' signs as well as others with 'Liberty once lost is lost forever' signs.  Hey, Trumpista dolts, how about your life once lost is lost forever?  Then you won't have to worry about any income, period!

Meanwhile, Vegas' mayor Carolyn Goodman belched out: "This shutdown has become one of total insanity!"  Uh no, my dear mayor lady, it's become an effective means to prevent Vegas' hospitals from overflowing with Covid patients.   But lest we come down too hard on these minor leaders like Goodman - or South Dakota's  clueless governor Kristi Noem (who refuses to shut down despite one of the biggest clusters in the nation) or the hoi polloi screaming protests for "taking their liberties", let's look further afield at the real culprits.  The brigands in media - mainly reactionary right trolls - who keep feeding these memes- energizing the "revolt of the dummies" to borrow J's parlance.

Start with the WSJ editorial scribes themselves (i.e. 'It's Still America, Virus Or Not!', April 13, p.  A16) who Joe Scarborough ripped to shreds just two mornings ago, e.g. "Who do these Wall Street  Journal editors think they are?  They yelp about liberals just wanting to feed money to workers instead of going back to their jobs. When they can sit in their nice home offices and not have to worry about getting sick!"

Of course, though Joe focused on the rush to get back to jobs, the Journal's editors went even further off the deep end in their bogus arguments, ibid.:

"The First Amendment still stops government from prohibiting the free exercise of religion, and still guarantees the right to free assembly."

Incredibly conflating the first amendment and free exercise of religion with the right to assemble cheek to jowl amidst a pandemic..  So with the spread of such deformed and misbegotten memes it's no wonder we have seen as many fellow citizens as we have devolve into stupidity.  It seems, as Janice is wont to say, "in this country the virus of stupidity is as rife as the bat virus."  Well, yeah, ok, I have to agree if we see these Tea Party -like protests continue.

Then there is the Journal's proudest provocateur and rhetorical bomb thrower, Holman Jenkins Jr. In an earlier (April 7) blog post  I already highlighted his  daft op-ed ('Was Dr. Strangelove an Epidemiologist?')  where he trots out a medical resident named Joseph A. Ladapo (of UCLA) who claimed in a recent op-ed that "the shutdowns if prolonged will only make matters worse."      Adding that even when restrictions are lifted "we will emerge right back where we started.... and no matter what our hospitals will still be overwhelmed."

Says who?  As I observed at the time one was left to wonder where this quack came by that "Eureka" brain fart.  In fact, Jenkins' balderdash was pure propaganda only spun to try to get pressure on the medical community to loosen standards and allow the virus to resume its hatchet job on hospitals, nursing homes, meat packing plants and prisons.  It can't be otherwise, i.e. like Jenkins Jr. really cares because every word he writes (e.g. 'Sweden Is a Viral Punching Bag', WSJ, April 15, p. A15) reinforces the conclusion he's out for one thing: reopening the economy too soon so he can quickly resume his evening dinners of foie de gras and wine.  Most telling in his latest (April 15, ibid.) jeremiad against the medical community:

"When it's all over, academics will look seriously at how the lockdown strategy compares with alternative strategies .  They will ask how much of our apparent curve flattening to date was due to individuals taking precautions, how much to heavy -handed government intervention. How many lives- and more realistically years- were really saved by our efforts?"

Again, the  little Neolib mutt just doesn't get it.   He doesn't get that the core issue is preventing our limited medical system (including in terms of supplies raided by Trump, Jared & Co.) from being overrun. Already in NYC the past two weeks we've beheld a system at the very brink - often with double the number of Covid patients for the ER (or ICU) capacity.  Did Holman see any of this?   The fact that New York's system didn't tip over into chaos was all because of the mitigation efforts which he belittles, suggesting some alternative mode of solutions exists. It doesn't, other than in his febrile mind.

Another crass and cynical aspect of the above quote from Jenkins' piece is the question, 'How many lives- more realistically years- were really saved by our efforts?'  This rhetorical bit and its implication may have been missed by many.  What he means by referring to "years saved" is the fact that older Americans - say in the 70-85 year bracket, don't have that many years of their life left anyway, say compared to young sprats, millennials etc.  Hence, the deaths of older Americans in his quantitative risk vs. benefit view don't count as much toward being "saved", if lost to Covid.  One hundred seniors with maybe two years left each (on average) to live in nursing homes, by his reckoning, adds up to 200 years saved. Compared to 100 millennials with maybe 50 years each left to live.  In this way, Jenkins can pretend to minimize the loss of life, the same way his conservo compadre Bill O'Reilly could when he said of dying seniors in nursing homes, "They were mostly on their last legs anyway."

But look, without any valid cures, treatments or vaccines,  we are all for the high jump anyway, say if the economy is prematurely opened. Especially before widespread effective testing and contact tracing. This is the method we are left with, whether Jenkins Jr. likes it or not. Or his WSJ compadre Daniel Henninger (WSJ, today,'Restore Laissez -Faire Capitalism', p. A13) who insists we need "a bare bones government, not a bare bones economy".   Hey, Henny, how about just bare bones - and skulls - piled up in pit graves across the country? You ok with that, mate?  After all, Henny doesn't want any "security blanket statism " (i.e. 'dirigisme') with workers begging the gov't to  help feed them and their family- say instead of the hedge fund owners ready to tap into the PPP (Paycheck Protection Program).  As revealed by Bloomberg News, most of these hedge fund operations chomping at the bit for cheap, no strings loans, only have four or five employees.   Henny, I am sure, will be fine with that "laissez-faire" giveaway as will Holman Jenkins.

Thus, whisking millions back to work prematurely serves two main purposes for the WSJ's hacks: 1) Disabling any need for the govt' to step in again to send relief checks or expand food stamps etc., and 2) To provide more billions for the rich, the one percent, hedge fund owners, Repuke donors and the like..   As I often say, you can't make this shit up. Out of the mouths of capitalist loons and baboons.

Zeke Emanuel (oncologist and Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at the Univ. of Pennsylvania)- put it in stark terms for the economy über alles  humpers like Jenkins, Henninger et al on the April 6th 'Last Word' :

"Realistically COVID -19 will be here at least for the next 18 months or more.  There will be no normalcy until we find a vaccine or effective medications.   I know that's dreadful news to hear. How are people supposed to find work if this goes on in some form for a year and a half?   Is all this economic pain worth trying to stop COVID-19?

The truth is, we have no choice. Prematurely ending the physical distancing and the other measures, the deaths could skyrocket into the hundreds of thousands if not millions. We cannot return to normal  until there's a vaccine. Conferences, concerts, sporting events, religious services, dinner at a restaurant, none of that will resume until we find a vaccine, a treatment or  a cure."

At the basis of these strategies is the nature of exponential growth for this virus, e.g.

As described by one knowledgeable WSJ columnist ('The Power of Exponential Growth', p. C4, April 4-5).

"Exponential growth is dangerous because if each person infects more than one other person, the spread of disease quickly becomes overwhelming. Multiplying by 3 for instance. it only takes 21 steps to reach 10 billion, more than the current population of the world."

Little Holman would do well to process and remember her words, and he might also avail himself of the recent work of sane WSJ columnist Jo Craven McGinty ('Why The Flu Doesn't Tank The Economy',  April 11-12, p A2) wherein she notes:  "Instead of gentle waves of cases cascading around the country like the flu, a tidal wave of Covid cases has swept across major cities in half the time"

The point being that the R- nought is significantly greater so the rate of transmission is faster. This is a fact any dolt has to master before jumping like a lemming onto the hurry up and re-open bandwagon.

Holman needs to process all this (along with his WSJ editors) before he next writes fulsome twaddle complaining about "heavy-handed government intervention".   Nobel winning economist Paul Romer on All In last week posited over 300 million tests were needed nationwide before we can even think of returning to business as usual.  This country isn't even doing one hundredth of such tests per week, so how can there be the most remote hint of reopening? Further, the U.S. federal government "has yet to launch a national test and trace strategy to find and isolate virus carriers" (WSJ, today, p. A9), without which it is sheer madness to reopen.

At minimum, as Prof. Romer indicated to Chris Hayes,  we need at least 4- 5 million tests per week to get a basic idea who's infected, where the virus is. The sad and sorry fact? The U.S. of A. has barely done 3.2 million tests in the past month - so we're way way behind the curve of testing adequacy.  Without that and contact tracing it's a bloody fool's errand to open the country up. Apart from which opening up is not like flicking on a light switch. As Anthony Fauci pointed out to ABC's David Muir in an interview on the news  last night:

"It's gonna be like a rolling re-entry not like a light switch turning on and off.... Also, we do not know everything about this virus and what it's capable of doing. It is also entirely conceivable we will see a rebound of the virus as we get into a seasonal situation, such as next fall or winter."

The other element Jenkins and his team of  greedhead buffoons don't grasp, is that the economy is inextricably bound with the nature of the virus, the pandemic.  "You want to get the economy back? Take care of the virus!"  In the words of Chris Hayes, host of 'All In' last night. Until the problem of the virus is fully solved, there is no way in hell that the economy can come back even in a diluted, weakened state. But try telling or explaining that to those like the Pennsylvania Repukes pushing against Gov. Tom Wolf to open the state up - with one Repuke Mike Turzai- blurting:

"The hurt from the economy is as great as the hurt from the virus, so we need to help both at the same time."

Uh no, dope, you can't "help both at the same time".   The reason is that the economic function -at any level - is contingent on the control of the virus.  That is only achieved with a vast testing and contact tracing program. Do you have that? If no, then you can't open the economy yet.  The worst outcome at this stage would be a second wave of deaths, illness to begin because states let up too soon.   Such a scenario would force an even longer postponement. How hard is this to process?

With inadequate testing there will always be the lurking virus clusters (like in a Smithfield meat plant Sioux Falls,SD because of its inept, dumb governor Kristi Noem) especially with the dearth of proper testing going on now - which ought to have commenced months ago.

On reading Jenkins' propaganda piffle it was also clear to me he doesn't really believe in the idea - better principle, of flattening the curve. This is when he refers to "apparent curve flattening".    But there's nothing "apparent" about it.
Image may contain: text

One can see, even if one has zero math skills and couldn't pass a Mensa test if his life depended on it (like Jenkins et al) that flattening the curve is real and is evidenced when the caseloads are less than what we'd see if the hospitals were overwhelmed. As we look to the states where strict mitigation was in force, e.g. CA, WA, we can easily see it works and they've even been able to donate ventilators and staff to the states in the east (NY, NJ etc.).

Another aspect is that if mitigation is not coordinated simultaneously  for all states, then one would have different curves in succession at different times -  like a wave train.  This is what the US of A is in for,  looking at the red states like TX, SD, etc. none of which have firm shelter in place rules.  That means, logically - as virologist Dr. David Ho has pointed out, the curves for flattening are spread out over time.  Don't fancy the longer wait?   Then blame Trump for his lack of leadership is setting up a coherent national coordination policy!

In the case of multiple curves spread over time, we then have -  instead of one area under the curve to deal with say 'A'  (the area under the green hump above)-   a succession of areas: A1 + A2 + A3 etc. each area extending over the time axis.   That means the flattening process will take much much longer and hence the time to justify reopening the economy will take much longer.  This is what Jenkins and his band of nitwits doesn't grasp.  That includes the likes of ol' Phil Gramm - long time anti-big government gadfly (and former Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee)who in his latest effort ('More Stimulus Would Crush The Recovery',  WSJ, April 15, p. 17)  clearly has no sympathy for the 17-odd million Americans currently without income - other than what the CARES act has provided. And yet this mutt would deny them any more despite that $1200 per person, and extra unemployment cash - will barely last another month - if they are lucky.

What's Gramm's (and co-author's Michael Solon's) answer?   Well, it's to "rely on private capital and initiative and our free enterprise system".   In other words, let the loafers waiting for new handouts get off their butts and figure out - using "initiative" - ways to enhance their cash flow without depending on gov't handouts.  Else, "all this new government borrowing will consume the very oxygen a powerful recovery will need,"

What are Gramm, Jenkins Jr., Solon and the Wall Street Journal editorialists terrified of? Well, a "Depression-esque recovery" demanded by the Democrats in an election year. Which, of course would be horrific given the Democrats "have sought to use the crisis to permanently expand government spending and the role government plays in the aftermath."

Yep, for sure we don't want government providing desperate millions of our fellow citizens a lifeline to survive a few more months - with no money coming in to pay for groceries, utilities, or rent.  The Repuke barbarians would rather let those millions perish in pauperhood than let the federal government extend a helping hand.  The motto of these apes is to "let 'em lift themselves by their own bootstraps or pound sand."

Hence, the Scrooge aspects of so many of the "solutions" proferred, from raiding their own 401ks to get the money they need, to taking out loans and asking for "forbearance", to drawing down on their Social Security early.  What next will these fools offer? Going to blood banks and trying to sell blood to get nutrition for their starving kids?

Instead, they'd rather keep that $250m now being held up (in the latest CARES bill) to support more tax breaks for hedge fund billionaires and other wealthy pals of Trump and the Repubs.  As noted  last night (All In) the Washington Post reported that 80 percent of the tax changes in the new coronavirus  relief package "overwhelmingly benefit millionaires."    So while a young guy like Ned Standford, featured on ABC news and just laid off, barely has a buck left to get a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, the millionaires that WSJ and Jenkins et al pander to will be sitting pretty.  But this is all the more reason people not allow themselves to be played like pawns by the Wall Street cowboy capitalists.  Will the Tea Party type Trumpsters marching in Lansing and elsewhere get it?  I didn't even bother to ask Janice as I know already what she will say.

Btw, if you're wondering why your "stimulus" check is taking longer to arrive it's because Trump deliberately held them up so his monicker could be imprinted on the checks by the Treasury Dept. (He now denies it, but the delay has already affected the timing.)  So the checks will now take an extra 2-3 days (so we're told) because Trump has to stroke his own ,monstrous ego- even while kids are going without soup and parents without basics like TP.

"Trump Derangement Syndrome"? The Right Should Be Terrified

One of the supposed  trigger images for "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

Image may contain: 1 person, text

One of the tropes circulating amongst the Trumpkins is that the Left is hysterical and over-reacting to the former's beloved, brain dead buffoon - manifesting in TDS or "Trump Derangement Syndrome".  In the fantasies of these Right wing knuckle draggers, most of the Left is either seeking therapy or crouched into fetal positions on cots in their basements, crying at every Trump news flash as they reach for their Zoloft.

The Right should be so lucky, even as we learned last night Dotard was intent on firing Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller last June, but held back when his lawyer (Don McGahn) threatened to quit.

In fact, the Left has been massively organizing by the millions  - especially the women who backed Hillary Clinton- and are now enraged a pussy grabber stole (with Russian help)  her job of destiny. Not only organizing but fielding candidates and winning in state elections.  As a recent TIME article on 'The Avengers' pointed out (Jan. 29, pp. 27-33):

"Progressive women described undergoing a metamorphosis. In 2016 they were ordinary voters . In 2017, they became activists, spurred by the bitter defeat of the first female presidential candidate at the hands of a self-described pussy grabber. Now, in 2018, these doctors and mothers and teachers are jumping into the arena and bringing new energy to a Democratic Party sorely in need of fresh faces."

Adding:

"Call it payback, call it a revolution, call it the Pink Wave inspired by marchers in their magenta pussy hats and the activism that followed. There is an unprecedented surge of first time female candidates....running for offices big and small - from the U.S. Senate to local school boards."

This ought to worry the Repukes and their groupies given "women candidates energize women voters". This, combined with potential depressed turnout on the Right,  holds the potential for a 'blue tsunami" not just a blue wave in November.

Other signs of what's to come:

- Female donors have helped raise $523 million for candidates over the past year, including for organizations like ActBlue

- Support from female voters helped lift Dem Ralph Northam to victory in the Virginia governor's race. (Northam won women by 22 points, which provided the winning margin overall)

- The Ds also picked up 15 seats in the VA House of Delegates of which 11 were won by women.

- The Resistance organization 'Indivisible' now has at least two local chapters in every congressional district and more than 6,000 groups nationwide.

In respect to the last, Professor  of Government and Sociology Theda Skocpol of Harvard "says the anti-Trump progressive uprising already has more local groups than the Tea Party did at its height."  We now also know many of the women who built this new progressive infrastructure are the same ones who spent 2016 trying to stop Trump. Yes, they failed and they were in a world of emotional hurt in the aftermath, maybe even suffering from TDS. But now, they're angry, they're motivated, they're organizing and running for office themselves to bring the Repukes down. They are not going to take it any more.

"Trump Derangement Syndrome"? If that's what it takes to propel electoral organization to topple the Trumpkins and their GOP lapdogs, bring it on.

But it doesn't stop there. There is also the potential for the entire Republican Party to go the way of the Whigs based on their irrational anti-immigration stance. That's not my take but that of Daniel Henninger, conservative columnist of The Wall Street Journal in his article ('Republicans and Dreamers') yesterday. Henninger argues that while the Reeps are "taking a victory lap" after the Dems blinked last week on the shutdown, they shouldn't count their winning chits too soon.  It may be instead that:

"The Republican Party has a last chance not to consign itself to the dustbin of history over the infernal immigration issue."

He is referring to the enormous public support for DACA and the Dreamers as disclosed in polls As he continues:

"DACA has become a household word, meaning that most people who vote have developed an informed opinion about the 800,000 or so Dreamers ...Public support for letting the Dreamers off the deportation hook sits between 70 percent and 80 percent. When polling numbers hit that level the politics of an issue is usually over.

Except - as always for Republicans- if the subject is immigration. Rarely has a political party fallen so deeply in love with a ball and chain."

A 'ball and chain' which Henninger believes will take this party down to the level of irrelevance.  Why? Look at the stats as Henninger does here and consider the consequences if the 'pukes vote down any DACA deal:

"For the purposes of the imminent  Washington battle over the Dreamers, Mr. Trump carried Florida and its 29 electoral votes by 1.2 % of the nine million votes cast. He won Texas' 38 electoral votes with only a 52.4% majority. No Republican since Bob Dole has won Texas with a smaller margin."

He goes on to elaborate how these margins are critically important given we are talking about a total of 67 electoral votes for the two states. In the case of Texas "the Hispanic population has increased in all but 11 of its 254 counties."   Republicans typically win "40 to 45 percent of the Hispanic vote". So any change in the proportions could toss the state into the blue column. Such a change could occur when  agonizing TV scenes showing the deportation of Dreamers play across the country.

The same trigger applies in Florida, with the added electoral specter being the nearly 300,000 Puerto Ricans (voting U.S. citizens) who have migrated there because Dotard allowed the island territory to sink after Hurricane Maria rather than provide timely and sufficient assistance. Even now, barely 50% of the island has its power back. This is disgusting. And the import isn't lost on Henninger, because these dissed Puerto Ricans - while they may be suffering from some TDS - will be up and ready to vote in November. As Henninger notes:

"The state estimates that nearly 300,000 U.S. citizens from Puerto Rico fled to Florida after Hurricane Maria. Some will stay, register and vote.  You cannot, like King Canute, simply order this wave back to Puerto Rico,"

No, indeed, you cannot. And further,  I somehow suspect given the scenes (still fresh in mind)  of Dotard tossing kitchen napkins to their families, there will be many more than "some" casting votes- against Trump and the pukes.

Heninger observes (ibid.):

"If Florida turns as reliably blue as California and New York, Republicans - starting with Donald Trump - may never win another presidential election. A Republican candidate would have to run the electoral table across the Midwest."

Yes, the wonders of Trump Derangement Syndrome. In this case now fueling a profound passion in alarmed citizens to take back their country from the traitors, troglodytes and proTrump turds.

Yes, "Identity Politics" Will Be With Us For The Forseeable Future

"BWAAAAHAHA! Dat Bob Mullah goin' after me Daddy Donald!"  (A portrait of a typical Foxite Trumpie)

Donald Dotard tends to his "tribe", but what is this tribe? How best to define it? Is it like a menagerie of the downtrodden under a Stockholm syndrome, who fancy having their master abuse them with phony tax cuts and repealed health care? Or is it more like a clan of clueless infants endlessly bawling for "justice" and importance? Or maybe it's a bit of both.  We do know many of them actually back Dotard's policies - including getting rid of the ACA and giving $800 billion in corporate welfare to the rich in the GOP tax "reform" bill. This despite the fact those actions will wreak the most havoc on the Trumpies.  They also seem to be A-ok with repealing net neutrality despite the fact if that happens most of their blogs will get cold and inactivated since they won't be able to afford keeping them - at least functioning expeditiously - i.e. without taking nine hours to get a post up.

In any case, there is no way the nation's tribal politics and polarization are ending anytime soon. And it would be unwise for the Left to surrender its own identity politics.

In a recent WSJ column ('Selfie Politics', Nov. 9, p. A15) Daniel Henninger wrote:

"Democrats found validation for the politics of identity in the Virginia results. Some 77 percent of unmarried women voted for Ralph Northam. Ed Gillespie was standing in front of an anti-Trump train."

Let's point out here that child molester Roy Moore in Alabama was also standing in front of the same train. As noted in a recent TIME article (December 25, p. 30):

"Moore and his allies distributed appeals  about preserving Confederate monuments, NFL players kneeling at football games and dangerous criminals registering to vote. The Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie in Virginia, took a similar tack. If either had won Trump's divisive tactics might have become the 2018 campaign blueprint for countless candidate."

But instead (ibid.):

"The tide has started to turn away from the insanity we have been living through. It is time to return to decency and compassion."

WHY has the "tide" started to turn? (At least for those of us who accept facts.) Because the Dotard Tribe's playbook is now a losing one. Sensible people, voters across the nation, are simply tired and fed up with the Steve Bannon- Dotard style of destroying the civil fabric of the nation and doing so under the banner of "destroying political correctness" - unaware they are also mangling civility and democracy..

Of course, the damage extends to international relations as well, as we've seen  with micro-Nazi Nikki Haley warning the 128 nations in a UN vote that condemned the Trumpie Imperium.  This was after Dotard declared Jerusalem as formal capital of Israel - thereby demolishing the entire peace process. To add fuel to the fire this incompetent shitwit also declared the U.S. would move its embassy there. See e.g. http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2017/12/brace-for-wave-of-terror-after-dotard.html

So, of course, the sane nations of the planet would come out against this fell move. But there was Haley, five brain  sizes too small for her role as UN Ambassador, declaring....eerrr whining: "The United States will remember this day for which it was singled out for attack.. This vote will be remembered and have consequences."     Oooooohhh! What, exactly? Disallowing any Dotard visits? Halting the puny 2 percent funding you've failed to provide anyway?

Uh no, dope. The U.S. was not "singled out for attack", rather its reckless attack on the Mideast peace process was simply condemned in a democratic VOTE at the UN. Deal with it, idiot.  But this is the grievance mentality the Trumpites have stoked to a tee which yes, has spawned separate national identities in this now rapidly declining nation.

Why this anger and stoking of phony outrage? Because in Trump's as well as Steve Bannon's playbook: "tribal grievance is more powerful than tired policies."  That's why, before the Alabama Senate special election, Bannon tried to rile up the base of cracker Trumpites with bombastic blather such as:  "They hate the Trump miracle and the nullification project. They're trying to get you to shut up. They couldn't beat Trump becausxe they couldn't beat you."  And so on, with endless  whining full of mock grievance.

And yeah, it's easier to get your tribe worked up over kneeling NFL players during the anthem, or abortions or removing Confederate monuments than it is to craft and implement policies that redound to the benefit of all citizens. It's easy to pull chords of emotions of your tribe and get them worked into a frenzy than not.

Henninger's WSJ piece goes on (ibid.):

"The Democrats not unreasonable takeaway from Virginia will be that identity politics works, so do more of it."

Well, kind of, but not quite.  He misses the point that the identity on the left has accrued and developed as a reaction to the free for all hate fest on the Right. In other words, it has been developed in order to preserve civil society by amassing a truly democratic counter weight, as opposed to a mass of screaming zombies only out to tear down the nation by draining an imaginary "swamp".

The most derelict balderdash of all in Henninger's piece is:

"For all the antipathy directed at Mr. Trump, he in fact speaks for the Everyman of America's selfie politics. Embrace Me! Self interest, the old normal in politics, has been replaced by insistent self regard."

Which is to say, whining as an art form based on relentless  navel gazing and scapegoating. As pointed out in a recent New Republic article ('It's the Culture, Stupid!', November, p. 14):

"In last year's election, according to an analysis by political scientist Tim Wood, 61 percent of the poorest whites - those in the bottom third of income distribution - voted for Trump."

Who are these whites?   A Dec. 5th, 2016 article in The Economist gives us a jarring insight (p. 30):
"The anxiety Trump supporters betray by looking for scapegoats says most, of course, about themselves. Typically members of the white lower middle class, they are at once jealous of the small privileges that distinguish them from the toilers below, and bitterly resentful of the faraway government that provides their Social Security, VA care and Medicare."

Bitterly resentful. An attitude that reached its nadir once Barack Obama took office, and these poor whites couldn't bear to see an intelligent black man reach the acme of governance in our nation. To them he was an alien, and a "Hussein" - always making sure to use his middle name when characterizing him. Bitter and resentful. Deplorable.  But deplorable is not a deserved epithet unless and until it crosses over into blatant racism - which it did- leading them to circulate vile, hate-filled images such as:
Image result for obama lynched imagesImage result for obama lynched images
These are the "everymen" to which Henninger refers, who are a disgrace to any true "Everyman" worthy of the name.   Thus, what drove the aberrant vote in 2016 for Trump wasn't income but identity. An identity connection which Trump has  fostered by pandering to their insecurities, stroking their pathetic egos ("You will never be ignored again!") then more recently attacking the Mueller probe and our justice system - Constitution ("We have a rigged system").

Henninger also claimed (ibid.):

"The only thing the Democrats self categorizers can see staring back at them from their screens is whatever awful thing Trump has tweeted about....Me!"

Missing the essential point that each focus of a Trump tweet attack has been an element of our democracy - whether James Comey, Bob Mueller, the courts that thwarted his Muslim ban, the NFL players exercising free speech, the press and media or - more recently, the FBI in toto ("They are in tatters!")  If I was any self respecting FBI agent, I'd yearn to put this guy's head on a pike.  But there it is.

Henninger's delusion is to believe the normal citizen response (as in the Resistance)  to Trump's attacks is simple solipsism. In fact, it translates to  a defining counter attack against Trump's OWN attacks on civil,  democratic society. Hence, Elijah Cummings recent injunctions to those of us who seek to protect it, to do so. This is especially in the wake of the ongoing attacks by Trump TV flunkies  on the CIA, the FBI, Bob Mueller, and the current Trump-Russia investigations by fifth columnist traitors like Devin Nunez, Trey Gowdy and their cohort .

THIS is the danger missed by the illustrious Henninger in his myopic effort to scapegoat the Democrats and those of us who inveigh against Dotard's attacks. Because we understand, like Henninger does not, the dangers posed by  degenerate support for a minority faction of the populace - who are severely propagandized (via FAUX News)  to follow their leader (like the "Good Germans") - and also to despise their fellow citizens.  The dynamic enables easy identification with fellow Trumpies via their mutual hatred of  "political correctness"  and  "establishment elites".  Hence, Bannon's blueprint to encourage this faction to disbelieve anything the mainstream media reports no matter how credible or damning.

Their narcissistic hunger (in some cases driven by a sense of inferiority) mirrors Dotard's and has compelled them to identify with Trump in his destruction of norms and regulations (i.e. citizen protections), which has exacerbated political divisions in the country.   Thus, Neal Gabler's trenchant and pithy words in a recent smirkingchimp.com blog post:

"Historians may determine that November 8, 2016  was the date America’s second civil war began. By that perspective, just as the first Civil War was the last gasp of slavery, this second is very likely the last gasp of aging white Americans — their full-throated death rattle against an America that they detest for having changed so dramatically.."

Naomi Klein in her recent book, 'NO Is Not Enough - Resisting Trump's Shock Politics'), argued that, pp. 90-91:

"It is short-sighted,  not to mention dangerous, for liberals  and progressives to abandon their own focus on identity politics",

because:

"To a terrifying degree, skin color and gender conformity are determining who is physically safe in the hands of the state, who is at risk from vigilante violence, who can express themselves without constant harassment and who can cross a border without terror."

Bottom line? So long as the Right embraces identity politics and tribalism  - seeking to stoke their voters using hate and distrust,  we on the sane side  must adopt a counter identity politics - appealing to the angels of citizens' better nature - not their worst.  Those appeals to citizens' better natures then are all about protectively circling the  "wagons" - whether on behalf of the 800,000 DACAns Trump wants to ship out, or the decent Muslims he wants to block from coming in, or the Puerto Ricans he has abandoned as "too costly" for federal assistance after Hurricane Maria. In other words, our tribal identity must be to protect those minorities threatened by the howling banshees of the Right.

Oh, and lest I forget, that protective brief extends to Robert Mueller's remaining as special prosecutor, and repelling any and all attacks against the integrity of his investigation. As we know, and anyone who's followed "Trump TV" is aware, the Foxites have been going batshit insane the past few weeks trying to foment a conspiracy from whole cloth rubbish. They've conjured up  and woven together disparate nonsense such as the already disproven "uranium one" (which eight federal agencies approved), Clinton donations, and the Steele dossier to arrive at a "coup" attempt  to oust their little asshole, Donnie Dotard.   These Reeptards - hysterical that the FBI and Obama-Clinton surrogates want to "undo"  Trump's ascension-  are pulling on any straw a drowning rat might. That  includes the use of willing toadies like Devin Nunez and Trey Gowdy - as well as Chuck Grassley - to scuttle the congressional investigations. They're primary objective is to also  discredit Robert Mueller's investigation because one FBI agent made negative email comments about Donnie the Dotard..  Failing to process or notice that Peter Strzok also made damning remarks about Bernie Sanders and Hillary.

He was, in other words, an equal opportunity texting bomb thrower. But the poor little crying tribe of Trumpies just zoned in on what he said about the Donald i.e. that he was an "idiot". Well, at least he didn't call Dotard a fucking moron"  like Rex Tillerson did.  But this is what gets the panties of the Dotard tribe all in a twist, to the extent that many of these knot heads claim Strzock's email texts show such extreme bias against Trump that the Mueller investigation is compromised.

These Reeptardos can't get it into their noggins that nothing was compromised. As Rod Rosenstein pointed out to the House Judiciary 'pukes, even FBI agents are entitled to their own opinions. Yeah, this guy Strzock did get caught, but he was also fired back in July last year. So the Reeptards foaming at the mouth are all beating a dead horse that left the "barn" 17 months ago..  But this is what what they want to do for their tribe, to keep them stoked with misplaced fury. sowing even more division, more polarization.

The other reason tribalism and identity politics can never cease is that we have nearly a third of the nation following the lies of FAUX News.  Ingesting daily the lies that Mueller's investigation is "biased" (never mind most of these imps were singing Mueller's praises back in May as a Republican and "straight arrow"), and a "coup" is afoot to "undo the election" of their  little bastard, Dotard.

Since by its nature truth and national advancement can never be in league with lies, destruction and chaos, then there can be no common cause or polity with the Trumpie Foxites. Their tribe must hang by itself, on all their lies they are ingesting. We on the other side - who value genuine science, proper regulations and stable governance -  cannot be one with them.

Hence, the national scene is set for perpetual division: tribalism and identity. When will it end, or can it end? Only when the minority side now creating "mischief of faction" (as warned about by James Madison) comes to its collective senses - ditches Dotard, and returns to embrace truth,  democracy and national unity - including abiding by the rule of law and whatever finding Robert Mueller's investigation arrives at.

If not, we shall remain a nation divided, possibly to the point of another Civil War.
