Millions May Survive The Pandemic - But Will They Be Prey To The 'Infodemic'?

This undated electron microscope image made available by the U.S. National Institutes of Health ...

"The inability of so much of the public to remember what Trump was saying just a month ago suggests that, in addition to the coronavirus crisis, we’re also experiencing a national amnesia pandemic."   - Bret Stephens, NY Times

"The  Enlightenment is actually on trial now in the U.S. And whether truths, facts and objectivity matter. What we are seeing is a partisan pandemic, and this shouldn't be." -  John Meacham, this morning on 'Morning Joe', MSNBC

"The Trump administration's response to the coronavirus has been defined by incompetence and deceit from the beginning. While they claim to be focused on the crisis at hand they have also been using the last month to pursue all kinds of ideological and policy vendettas." - Chris Hayes, Wednesday night 'All In', referring to what Trump and his cabal are doing while we're preoccupied with COVID-19  - and their goofy happy talk.

"The idea that the number of people infected in all these (rural) places won't be the same as we're seeing in other places defies logic. The virus will spread. It might go a little bit more slowly in a rural area than it does in a dense city, but it's coming  to a town near you."  Dr. Ashish Jha, Harvard University, last night on 'All In'

"Trump says we’ve got plenty of tests available, when we don’t. He declares that Google is building a comprehensive drive-thru testing website, when it isn’t. He sends a Navy hospital ship to New York and it proves little more than an excuse for a campaign commercial, arriving and sitting almost empty in the Hudson. A New York hospital executive calls it a joke.  ....Every aspect of Trump’s crisis management has been annexed by his psychopathology. As Americans die, he boasts about his television ratings" -   Jennifer Senior, 'This Is What Happens When A Narcissist Runs A Crisis',  NY Times, 4/5

Watching the ABC News  Wednesday evening it was appalling to learn of the death threats made against the indefatigable Anthony Fauci.  But that tells you all you need to know concerning the parallel disaster of the ongoing "INFOdemic'.  In the case of Dr. Fauci, assorted trolls from right wing blogs like "Gateway Pundit" and others decided to try to make an example of him. Why? Because in a serious time of national emergency and health crisis he had the cojones to correct the clown and buffoon spewing lies and misinformation - often downplaying the virus - even calling it a "hoax" for the first two weeks.  (Trump apologists like Kim Strassel - WSJ today, p A15-  insist Trump never said that and Joe Biden is lying about it, but hold strain. Trump originally did bellow that on a FOX n' Friends appearance then altered it during a presser to claim "I meant the Democrats are using this as a hoax against me!")  Nice try, Swine, but more of us are onto your deceptions!

After that, anyone with half a brain could see Trump's briefings at the White House on COVID-19 have been a daily circus of lies and misinformation, and right when the public, in a time of crisis, deserves the simple, unvarnished  truth.   Making it worse, too many media outlets insist on broadcasting it live, which merely reinforces the bilge coming out while it elevates Trump's profile to a quasi-leader,  or as he calls himself,  a "wartime president".  Of course, he's been nothing of the sort, only  a yellow bellied coward who still believes as author Michael Lewis ( 'The Fifth Risk') told Chris Hayes on 'All In' Wednesday night that "storytelling can make up for lack of honesty".  What it's done thus far is bumped Trump's approval numbers up a bit but that is only temporary and will crater when people - even in Trumpie red states- see the body bags piling up because their great hero Dotard didn't do squat to prepare.  Worse he lied, making them believe they'd have critical supplies, when he didn't do jack shit.  All an act, a performance, like on his Apprentice TV show.

Another aspect is the media - mostly corporate mainstream - still  insist on sending political reporters, who focus the questions on Trump rather than Fauci and his sidekick, WH  coordinator Deborah Birx.  This misdirection  results in outlandish ideas like a quarantine on New York, and ending social isolation by Easter.  In other words, by giving this asshole the chance to grandstand he blows out brain farts by the score - which the reporters then studiously write up to regurgitate later on the evening news. Instead, they ought to be assiduously ripping each claim apart.

This is also why many believe the press should instead send medical reporters, who will ask medical experts fact-based questions about the coronavirus—and what the government is doing to contain it.

It isn't difficult  to see that in this information cesspool - much of it emanating from a "leadership" that ought to be straight up with its citizens-   we have to be much much smarter as information consumers. The sad fact is we are not, else Trump's poll approval numbers would be plummeting, not rising. Part of that is a state of national amnesia (or perhaps suspension of disbelief, skepticism). In the case of the former too many are mesmerized by his daily snake oil salesman act and can't recall what Trump has said or claimed from one week to the next. Hence, when a poll or survey is asked of us, they forget how many outright lies the orange maggot has already unleashed.  See, e.g.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump's misfires on virus death rates, tests

In the case of the latter cognitive impairments too many Americans sit spellbound - gulping down what he spews out with hopeful eyes- but failing to process it's all a big act. There isn't a damned bit of truth or substance to any of it. He invents garbage on the fly, like vaccines "will be ready in weeks", or he will "use the defense production act" - then just lets it sit like an odious vapor. After which it all dissolves and there is still nothing to address the national crisis including medical workers crying and begging for help. And what does the illustrious traitor do? He calls them and their state governors "complainers" for demanding he step up to the mark and act the part of the big shot leader he professes.

The best thing is for people to just stop watching this charade.  That's because it isn't about helping people, only about Trump''s passing BS off as fact to secure his re-election.  And you don't even have to watch it to see what Anthony Fauci says or opines. He is on almost nonstop in various venues and even if you miss him in real time you can Google Youtube segments where he speaks on one or other aspect of the pandemic.

In her WSJ article 'How To Avoid The Infodemic',  March 23, p. B4, Nicole Nguyen has good solid advice for information seekers to negotiate the online info universe without being mindfucked at every turn.  The recommendations include:

1)Focus on factual information from official channels

That means focusing on facts from official sources, like the Centers for Disease Control.  The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) is also a solid source, and btw, one can find extensive material from each of these in reputable news sites, including The Financial Times and New York Times. The Wall Street Journal is also excellent, provided you ignore the op-ed pages.  (CDC also has a mobile app which delivers the real time info right to our phone).

2) Avoid private social media sites:

These include Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook and Youtube.  They are to be avoided because there's little or no oversight on what they churn out or what their denizens share. (Some of whom actually obtain misinformation from dreg sites like 8chan, 4chan or Gateway Pundit then share it).   Why take such precautions? Because as Ms. Nguyen notes, the more people are exposed to a falsehood, the more likely they are to accept it.  Just as exposure to a huge  COVID-19 viral load can destroy one's lungs, these mind viruses can destroy the brain, it's critical thinking capacity. This is also why it's advisable to stop watching Trump and his phony,  pretend briefings - which are really propaganda performances.  They are designed to try to enhance his re-election chances, not provide relevant policy updates or information to help distraught citizens..  Proof? What he is doing beneath the surface to wreck our lives, while he diverts with his  officious blather on TV.  (See below for examples.)

3) Look up which outlets covered the news.

Before sharing any information, do a quick search to see if reputable outlets reported the same thing (e.g. NY Times, Financial Times etc.)  This is the advice of Jon Keegan, an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University School of Journalism.  Keegan suggests using GroundNews, an app and website that shows how many outlets covered top stories at a glance. Most importantly, look at the sources names in the outlets' reports. If multiple reports link to the same questionable story - instead of citing primary courses- then be skeptical.

And, of course, it goes without saying that if you feel deluged by any sources - or stressed by the news- feel free to bail out. Don't click on a headline or blog post that may stress you further. (I also get this, which may be why blog readership appears to dive for several COVID-19 posts in a row, showing followers may have reached their 'saturation' points.  This is also why I try to scatter other subjects in between, i.e. like recent ones on entropy and humanist challenges to Xtianity).

4) Pause before you share anything.

Use your logical, critical thinking faculties and ask if it really make sense. If a source or video is provided, then watch it to see if the information given makes logical sense and especially if external support for any claims is provided. Are there journal citations, newspaper citations? If so, from where?

My take is the same as that of Prof. Claire Wardis of the Harvard Berkman Klein Center, quoted in the piece:

"If people stopped sharing entirely and just relied on official sources we'd be better off. It's like washing hands. We have to get into new habits about only what we know."

In this sense, we are being responsible information users and patrons and avoiding the spread of mind viruses, which can be almost as debilitating and destructive to one's cognitive ability as the COVID-19 is to the physical body.

It is abundantly clear that yet another attribute of the astute information user is to be aware of diversions, and especially what the bad guys are doing to us while they baffle us with bullshit at each COVID-19 briefing.  This is why Maddow often uses the axiom "Watch what they do not what they say."

How so? For example, over  this two month span while Trump has had too many of us mesmerized by his happy talk, exaggerations and lies, the following have been done:

-  They revoked the reservation status of a native American tribe for which Trump opposed a casino - to help with debt as many other tribes have.

- Trump has now given the green light to the Keystone pipeline. He issued a "permit" which now allows this project to move forward "without any further government review." (WSJ, yesterday, 'Keystone Pipeline To Be Built With Alberta's Help', p. B3)  The deal is for 20 years and allows up to 830,000 of tar sands crude to be pumped per day, and through farmlands that could be devastated in a spill or other catastrophe.

-  They are suspending the enforcement of a range of health and environmental laws.

- Trump has allowed son- in -law Jared Kushner to run a "middle man" operation to screw the states out of emergency medical supplies, and forcing them to bid against each other.  Jared admitted in one FOX interview: "These national stockpile supplies are not for the states but for US."  Who is 'us'?  The Trump family and its extended racketeers, gangsters??   See e.g.

And:

Opinion
- They are unilaterally rolling back fuel efficiency standards.for cars.  ("Because that's going to keep sick people's lungs healthy when they're gasping for air.". - Chris Hayes' sarcastic response Wednesday night's All In)

-Trump's Department of Justice is currently in court suing to scrap the entirety of the Affordable Care Act.

- Trump announced in between his lies and accusations last night there will be no special open enrollment  period for the ACA - denying access to exigent care for 28 million with no insurance and who may well get infected, or worse. Consequence? They may be left on the hook for $31,000 to $74,000 in medical bills depending on the severity of rhe disease and need for ICU, extended care.

When Pence was asked what Americans without access to the ACA could do, he had no answer. If you judge these vermin by their actions the take is simple:  They genuinely do not care. You can go pound sand or scream at the sky as your loved ones die, for all they care.

Yes, folks, that is our great government at work in this crisis, a band of vipers, traitors and  maggots - out to make things much worse while they are claiming to do "God's service" for you in this pandemic.  Don't fucking bite!  Be smarter than that!

Kavanaugh Not The Worst SC Pick - But He Still Merits Scrutiny - Not A Rubber Stamp

Brett Kavanaugh
While Brett Kavanaugh is the least deplorable Trump SC pick, that doesn't mean he gets a free ride.

Well, today much of liberaldom can breathe a (small) sigh of relief that Donnie Dotard didn't select Amy Coney Barrett (previous post) as the Justice to replace Anthony Kennedy. As I noted, the selection of Coney Barrett would have amounted to a judicial travesty no less disastrous than the Bush Sr. choice of Clarence Thomas in 1991.  So, perhaps before the left gets hysterical over the Kavanaugh pick it needs to bear in mind Trump's choice could have been way worse.

Of course, to a patient notified he's actually contracted  dysentery,  as opposed to cholera, this is small consolation.

For those who may not know, Brett Kavanaugh worked in the Bush Jr. White House before being nominated to the DC court of appeals in 2003. He was confirmed in 2006 after Democrats mounted a long fight against his nomination on the grounds that Kavanaugh was overly partisan.  That take was not completely unjustified given Kavanaugh worked for Ken Starr, the infamous lawyer who led the "Whitewater"  investigation of President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

As most of us who were alive at the time know, Starr couldn't get gnatshit out of the Whitewater investigation so had to pursue the irrelevant angle of Clinton's sex life. That also would have been a total dead end had Starr been disallowed the use of secretly made (criminally made) phone tapes of  confidential conversations with Monica Lewinsky by one Linda Tripp.   Tripp lived in Columbia, MD at the time-  where wifey and I also resided - and it was widely known Tripp (who worked at the Pentagon as a high grade gopher) violated Maryland statutes against taping phone conversations without informing the taped party.  Technically then, the Lewinsky tapes (Tripp incited Monica for more and more details at each taping)  ought to have been inadmissible. But Ken Starr disregarded the law when it suited him and used said tapes to trap Clinton in a lie ("I did not have sex with that woman!") which then became the basis for his impeachment.

Kavanaugh also helped author the Starr Report, which laid out the  spurious case for Clinton’s impeachment and removal from office, based on Lewinsky's illegally- obtained taped spiels with Tripp, i.e. about a blow job and soiled dress.. To make matters worse, Kavanaugh also did legal work for the Bush campaign during the Florida election recount.

Recall in that 2000 election, Jeb Bush had the voter lists scrubbed of tens of thousands of Afican Americans, who by a majority vote Dem. Greg Palast documented this  in his book,  'The Best Democracy Money Can Buy' detailing how 90,000 and probably more like 180,000 legal black voters were removed from voter lists in Florida, using the ruse that convicted felons can not vote in that state. Jeb Bush awarded the contract to the firm that submitted the higher bid, Choicepoint.  It then scrubbed from the voter rolls all names that were clearly black (e.g. first name Jamail, Devante or Kinesha,  for instance), that bore an arguable resemblance to a felon’s name.   End result? The SC handed the FLA electoral votes to Bush Jr.   Even Vince Bugliosi, who later blew it in a 2,500 page tome on the Kennedy assassination, got this one right. That was  embodied in his 2001 book, 'The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President'.

All of this in concert peeved Democrats no end, as it should have.

Alas, Kavanaugh is also a Roman Catholic - like Amy Coney Barrett - and he  discussed his Catholic faith last night in his acceptance blurb, proclaiming: “I am a proud member of the Catholic community in DC.”  Providing this disclosure while noting the priest for whom he served as an altar boy was in attendance for the announcement.    The good thing is he doesn't go in for speaking in tongues or getting esoteric divine messages.  The bad thing is abortion rulings could still be an issue for him. Or rather for those of us who defend a woman's right to abortion.

We already know, for example, that last fall Kavanaugh wrote a decision siding with Trump administration lawyers to block a migrant teenager in Texas from being released from custody to get an abortion.  He also criticized his colleagues for "creating a new right for unlawful immigrant minors in U.S. government detention to obtain an abortion on demand."  If Kavanaugh had been successful, he'd have pushed the teen into her second trimester.  Reinforcing this position, Kavanaugh also wrote,  “the Government has permissible interests in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor, and refraining from facilitating abortion"

So the jury is still out on his abortion stance, and yes, that ought to concern pro-choice folks.

At the same time, let's bear in mind the guy is almost like kryptonite for social conservatives.   Indeed, many of those groups have warned that Kavanaugh is "insufficiently conservative", citing decisions on Obamacare and abortion where they have felt that he did not go far enough in his opinions. In particular, they cite a 2011 ruling in which he dissented from a decision that the Affordable Care Act was constitutional solely on jurisdictional grounds and not as a matter of law. The American Family Association, a prominent fundamentalist Christian group, came out on Monday night against Kavanaugh’s nomination because his “reasoning on religious liberty, Obamacare and issues concerning life have proven to be of major concern”.

That social conservo knock was more than good enough for many libs (including me) to assert Kavanaugh to be the least of four potential evils. Again, try to think of it  not as conferring kudos but as electing to contract dysentery instead of cholera, Ebola or smallpox.

Still there are other issues that invite strong scrutiny of  Kavanaugh, especially given his views on whether presidents (like Traitor Trump) can be indicted or even impeached.  This is critical in light of Robert Mueller’s continuing investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.  Indeed, Sharilynn Ifill speaking last night (on 'All In')  before the announcement, noted it is an anomaly of the first order to have a likely criminal president making a Supreme Court pick at this time (perhaps weeks before being cited as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Russia probe),

Thus, it is eminently justified that Kavanaugh face tough questions about his views on whether sitting presidents can face criminal investigation. For example, Senate Dems can cite a 2009 law review article, in which he stated that impeachment was an adequate safeguard “if a president does something dastardly” writing:

“The President’s job is difficult enough as it is. And the country loses when the President’s focus is distracted by the burdens of civil litigation or criminal investigation and possible prosecution.”

Aww...boo hoo hoo, cry me a river, do.   But see we aren't talking about a normal, legitimate president here, but a buffoon and layabout who spends most of each day watching cable TV (FOX News) and tweeting. A guy who can't even be bothered to read his daily briefs and has spent more time now away from the White House - playing golf or hobnobbing at Mar-a-lago and Bedminster, than all previous presidents put together.   THIS is a doofus whose focus is already distracted and besides, wouldn't know how to do the damned job even if someone tried to donate a teaching video. ("The Presidency  101").

Hell, five days into his presidency he  even bawled that the job had  turned out to be too much for him to face. Too many details, too much stuff to master for an extensive government bureaucracy.  Hence, his penchant for becoming a cable TV and tweet addict. See e.g.

http://theconcourse.deadspin.com/donald-trump-stunned-to-learn-presidency-is-an-actual-j-1792215349

Excerpt:

“Being president is harder than Donald Trump thought,” begins the article, neatly capturing the blithe, criminal ignorance that characterizes both Trump himself and the many dozens of millions of morons who thought he should be the leader of the free world. Yes, being the president is a harder job than Donald Trump would expect, because Donald Trump had never previously held an actual job, because actually, spending your inheritance on a succession of failed cons is not an actual job."

The irony is that this consummate  asshole who is also a likely traitor,  selects a 53-year-old who has impeccable academic credentials and has authored over 286 opinions.  Unfortunately, one of those could grant Trump a "get out of jail free" card if somehow the culmination of the Russia probe reaches the Supreme Court.

Thus, the Dems must be as sure as much as they can be that Kavanaugh will act as an independent justice, and not seek to exonerate Trump because his job is "difficult enough as it is".   As per an op-ed in the NY Times:

"Fair questions would include inquiries not just about Judge Kavanaugh’s past writings and activities but also about how he believes various past notable judicial cases (such as Roe v. Wade) should have been decided — and even about what his current legal views are on any issue, general or specific."

The specific questions that ought to be considered by the Judiciary Committee, start with his opinion piece on relieving presidents of strong legal blowback, i.e., in terms of being questioned by Trump prior to the announcement:

"What were you asked about this article? What did you say? What assurances did you offer? What kind of things did the White House want to know?"

This is given Kavanaugh is the only person on Trump's short list who specifically wrote that  presidents should have protection from investigations. If it can be ascertained he was pumped by Trump to bolster that opinion or act on it (in Trump's case),  protecting Trump from a Mueller subpoena, the Dems need to full bore oppose it.

WSJ Exposes Trump Admin Memo & Plan To Squeeze Older Folks In ACA Plans

Related image
"Hey, I never promised older folks a rose garden! Even if they voted for me!"

The article by Stephanie Armour: 'Memo Details ACA Revamp' (WSJ, Mar. 7, p. A5) for the first time details how the Trump administration plans to shaft older (age 55-64) people who currently have signed onto the ACA.  We also learn the Trump bunch is feverishly pushing their plan "because the legislation would have to pass before insurers set the 2019 rates".

The basic details from the WSJ piece:

"The memo encourages lawmakers to pass measures including allowing insurers to charge older people fives time as much as younger people and expanding access to health savings accounts (HSAs) and increasing the amounts people can contribute to them."

In respect of the HSAs, these  primarily benefit affluent people who can afford to save more.  In other words, you need to have ample disposable income to shell out of pocket for your care, and then you can make effective use of the HSAs. But if you're a Walmart or Burger King worker, that's about as pie in the sky s expecting to win your state lotto just as your health care is demolished.

In terms of gouging older people, it is important to note (ibid.):

"The Affordable Care Act currently restricts insurers to charging older buyers three times as much as younger ones, which has checked premiums for 50-somethings and 60-somethings compared to what they might have been otherwise."

The last is important, because prior to the ACA the typical 60- year old - minus any employee plan - and still too young to go on Medicare- so would have to try access to a high deductible plan or COBRA - if he can get it. The first type typically wouldn't  kick in until he shells out $10,000 or so, and the latter costs nearly $650 a month.  A $4,000 tax credit will do almost nothing for him, especially if he is diagnosed with something like prostate cancer. If my experience is any guide, the full costs that would be paid for a standard treatment would be nearly $50,000.

As I warned in earlier posts about these forecast changes to the ACA by the Trump Nazis:

"God help all the Trump voters and other poor or unemployed if Trump goes through with his plans. They will now face steep costs for dealing with everything (in the coming years) from antibiotic resistance, to worm infestations of their brains, to cancers from new drinking water threats, e.g.  thanks to a Trump "executive order" allowing coal companies to  now dump coal waste into fresh water streams at will."

Oh, one more thing, as the piece notes:

"The administration also wants any ACA stabilization plan to allow for the renewal of short term plans that don't comply with the health law."

In other words, folksies, you can now be dinged for pre-existing conditions or even left out of health plans entirely. Also, if you do manage to get insured, your coverage will be more limited and more liable to run out before all costs are covered leaving YOU holding the bag.

One prediction I will make if this loathsome deal goes through is that many more 55-64 year olds will be doing their best to get onto Social Security disability insurance - especially if they are currently unemployed. Say on account of being displaced by automation or prevented from working owing to ageist bias. See e.g.

Welcome to Trump world!

Meanwhile, "'Trump Country' is not experiencing the renaissance he predicted" — nor will it down the road, because, as Dionne adds, Trump "could not have kept his outsize promises in the first place." And that is all too typical of the authoritarian hooligan to whom America's white working class has sold its soul.
