Rick Scott Is Enraged At "Liberals" Trying To Steal Florida Senate Election? Gimme An Effin' Break!

Image result for Rick scott douchebagImage result for Rick scott douchebag
Asswit and sleaze criminal FLA governor Rick Scott has some nerve calling Senate voting counts an "ethical violation".

The scenes of Rick Scott - Florida gubernator - going off half cocked and belching he will not allow "liberals to steal votes"-   is choice.  This SOB has been in the habit of sophisticated voter suppression for years in the Sunshine state. Recall, for example, the ungodly lines caused by his deliberate inefficiency and fell plan to limit voting 6 years ago, i.e.

Scene at one of the polling places in Florida in 2012, compliments of Gov. Rick Scott who cut early voting days by half. And now this asswipe vermin has the nerve to bitch about liberals stealing votes?

As I noted in a post from Nov. 4 that year:

"Scott did not do diddly about extending early voting times, thereby causing unconscionable voting line waits of up to 6 HOURS as reported in The Miami Herald. Now, Scott has forced the hand of the Florida Democratic Party to file a lawsuit early today to force Scott and the state to extend early voting. This followed a stream of complaints from voters (mostly African-American, Hispanic) who reported voting line waits of up to SEVEN hours Saturday. It also followed an ardent request on Thursday  from both the Florida Democratic Party and the League of Women voters to extend early voting hours. But Scott, unreconstructed asshole of the month that he is (maybe asshole of the year) has done neither.
As a number of outside observers have put it: "The extraordinarily long lines and extreme delays created have unjustifiably burdened the right to vote"

Let's also be clear Scott is a degenerate scam artist, con man and  criminal. Which too many Florida voters seemed to ignore - or were ignorant about - when they put this turd into office.

To jog memories, his healthcare outfit Columbia HCA was once found guilty of overcharging Medicare over $600m while Scott was CEO. Scott himself admitted "As I have said repeatedly Columbia HA made mistakes, and I take responsibility for what happened on my watch as CEO."  What were those 'mistakes'? The Miami Herald in an expose of Scott's Columbia HCA and the aftermath (June 27, 2010) noted, despite Scott denying that he knew frauds were taking place:

"However, federal investigators found that Scott took part in business practices at Columbia/HCA that were later found to be illegal -- specifically, that Scott and other executives offered financial incentives to doctors in exchange for patient referrals, in violation of federal law, according to lawsuits the Justice Department filed against the company in 2001."

The doctor payments were among 10 different kinds of fraud identified by the Justice Department in its 10-year probe of the company, records show. Three years after Scott left Columbia HCA, the company admitted wrongdoing, pleading guilty to 14 felonies -- most committed during Scott's tenure -- in addition to paying two sets of fines totaling $1.7 billion..."

This degenerate, (like Calif. Rep Duncan Hunter very soon) ought to have been a jailbird not a sitting governor of a major state.

No one ought to take Scott's barking (or Trump's, obviously) seriously given his background. Every vote, including absentee ballots and provisional ballots, needs to be counted - not dismissed or ignored. Not to do so, to capitulate to a maggot like Rick Scott and his gang of thugs, is to cause citizens to lose confidence in the electoral process. Thereby democracy, and our Republic, is imperiled. Because if citizens are disallowed the fair expression of their ballot, they will resort to other less peaceful means.

Let the vote counting continue in Dade and Broward counties, unlike in 2000 when a Reeptard mob besieged the counting venue, e.g.

Scott then, can shut his mutt mouth, and keep out of the Democratic process, as well as his goon brigade.

Newsflash: 2016 Election Voting Has Already Begun

Image result for "I voted" stamp
Even as we learned yesterday that Libertarian Gary Johnson further disqualified himself from serious presidential candidate consideration, there was 103 year old Rulene Steineger putting most everyone younger to shame as she pushed her walker to the polls in Iowa. She was one of the earliest voters in a state (among eleven) for which voting is already going on. These  include: Iowa, Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Vermont and Maine.

As for Rulene,, her reasons for early voting were pretty clear:

"I'm a hundred and three. That's the reason I'm voting early. I'm not taking any chances."

Indeed, and she's made clear her vote is for Hillary Clinton, so she's not taking any chances that  the Trumpster clown will sneak in by even one vote in Iowa - grabbing its electoral stash.  Meanwhile, for the first time in its 34-year history, USA Today's editors have come out against a presidential candidate, writing:

DON'T VOTE FOR TRUMP

"Trump is...by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency".

The paper also referred to a "dangerous demagogue" and a "serial liar' who "traffics in prejudice". With Clinton, the board split, half for half against. The main complaint was "Clinton's sense of entitlement and her lack of candor and her extreme carelessness."

The paper made it clear, however, they were not endorsing Clinton, but "disendorsing Trump'> They are basically okay with voters making any choice other than Donald J. Trump.  Meanwhile, we learn the Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson (who for some reason many millennial Sanders' voters seem to be attracted to) has now confirmed his status as a clown and dunce.  See e.g.

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2016/09/gary-johnson-passes-moronic-wannabe.html

In the most recent iteration, Johnson was asked by MSNBC host Chris Matthews, "Who's your favorite foreign leader?" To which Johnson grew pop-eyed, stared at Matthews and burbled "I...I...I'm having a brain freeze!"  He never could get a coherent response out though at one point he said "the former Egyptian President", but got hoist on his own petard when asked: "Which one?"

Does this guy belong anywhere near the oval office? I don't think so, not if he has to take a crash course in current world leaders and their nations. And certainly not if he couldn't even reference the Syrian crisis city of Aleppo (see previous link).  Yet, despite these major pratfalls, Clinton is still having to dispatch special teams to try and get the younger set on board who appear entranced by Johnson. Well, let's hope they soon wake up. Or as Bill Maher put it two weeks ago< "what the hell are you thinking?"

The general election is technically 39 days away, but in theory could well be decided before then, by virtue of early voting. I already identified eleven states for which it is already going on.  The early voting calendar and provisions, conditions can be found here:

https://www.vote.org/early-voting-calendar/

In all, 37 states and the District of Columbia allow early voting for this general election. Here in Colorado, wifey and I are also early voters - by mail. Colorado being one of only three states that permits mail balloting with no special excuses attached. We decided some years ago to go this route because often Colorado ballots are laden with special district issues and state referenda (this year including Amendment 69 for single payer health care, Amendment 70 to increase the state minimum wage, Amendment 72 to raise cigarette taxes to $2.94 a pack and Proposition 106, the medical aid in dying initiative.) Given the ballot complexity we opted to fill them out at home then mail them in. We will received our mail ballots from 18-22 days before election day, November 8th.  Our votes will be in well before then, signed, sealed and delivered. No traffic hassles, no standing in line - like many poor souls had to do in Florida in 2012, for hours.

Why don't more states offer the convenience of mail ballots and early voting? Who knows? But my suspicion is basically they want  to make it difficult to vote for certain demographic groups they don't trust - such as African-Americans. They have been in the sights of Reeptard gubernators since they helped bring in  electoral wins for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Of course, the primary instrument used for voter suppression is "voter fraud" which has been proven to occur only roughly 0.00000013 % of the time see e.g.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/voter-fraud-real-rare/story?id=17213376

This may or may not be a close "2000 type" election. My bet is that it won't and the plurality of Americans - if they haven't come to their senses after the Monday debate- will vote HRC on election day, especially early voters. In that view, I believe Hillary should have this election sewn up well before November 8th.

Is The US of A Fated To Remain 'Comedy Central' in Terms of Holding Elections?

Scenes like this  in Florida, have revealed the US of A to be Comedy Central in terms of conducting national elections

To the point: Even if you were elated at Obama's resounding victory you have to be embarrassed at what fellow citizens endured to get their votes counted in assorted states across the country. Let's cut to the chase right now and dismiss immediately any nonsense that such shameless inefficiency of operation yielding the absurd long voting lines  "had to be expected" or was in any way "normal". It was not. Rather it was a monumental travesty! What gives?

Even as the comedians ramped up their jokes again about Florida, people are wondering. The election long since over  (by FOUR DAYS) pathetic Florida - "the Sunshine state" - is still left counting ballots thanks to the crass actions of Governor Rick Scott - in severely limiting early voting days, and the actions of a Repuke legislature in fabricating and adding at least a dozen amendments to some districts, increasing voting times on their own,

While Rick Scott's state blew its chance to help determine the presidency, it did win a fabulous booby prize: a starring role in late-night laughs. Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's popular 'Daily Show', looked on the bright side Wednesday night, noting that unlike during the infamous 2000 Bush-Gore race, the entire nation wasn’t waiting on Florida to figure out who won.

“Here’s the good news: The election was decided without them,’’ Stewart said, drawing a rousing cheer from his studio audience. “For once, Florida’s clusterfuckery is irrelevant

Obama's victory, welcome as it was, was thereby marred by the extreme suffering so many millions had to undergo to cast their votes. Even Obama, acknowledging this, noted that "We have to FIX that!" Yes, we DO - because the conduct of national elections at the state level is now more than a sorry joke - it's an ongoing threat to our democracy. There is not one iota of evidence, not one, that in any other major election year voters will stand and wait as long as they did in this election. Give credit to Barack Obama for inspiring so many to sacrifice so much. (Including one Hispanic woman in Florida who attempted THREE poll visits, for a total of 12 hours of waiting in Miami-Dade, before finally joining a line at 5 p.m. Tuesday and getting to vote by midnight.)  This is a damned disgrace.

But it isn't just Florida! Rachel Maddow in her Nov. 7 show, documented these other gaffes:

- In Arizona,  Gabriel Palanco made 4 trips to the polls, since Poll workers could not find his registration and they wouldn’t accept his ID

- In Chicago, hundreds of frustrated voters were shuffled from polling place to polling place – then asked for identification, and when they couldn’t exactly comply to specifications were yelled at by aggravated election assholes….errrr judges…and left holding the wrong ballots

- In Orangeburg County,  South Carolina, voters at one poll were asked their party affililation even though voters in that state don’t register by party.

- In Pennsylvania, one guy voted for Barack Obama but the machine kept yielding Mitt Romney (See e.g. http://wonkette.com/488754/watch-this-pennsylvania-voting-machine-hilariously-refuse-to-accept-a-vote-for-barack-obama  )

- In Racine, WI they ran out of ballots at several locations.

- Back in Florida, early voting went late into the night Tuesday. In Miami-Dade for example, voters had to wait until clerks printed out several pages of new ballots for each voter – and many ended up still waiting in line at 1:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, waits of 7 hours or more were common.  and to employ Rachel's parlance, "lines of Odyssean length were seen in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Maryland and North Carolina"  – to name a few.  According to many observers this was the ‘stay in line’ election with many political operatives tweeting those in line : “As long as you were in line when the polls closed you can still vote” with messages sent to #stayin line

This pathetic array of events has made the US of A the joke of the world. A supposed technocratic nation that can’t even execute efficient voting.  By all accounts, as Maddow and also Chris Hayes have noted, casting a ballot ought not take more than maybe ten minutes! And no one ought to be waiting in line more than fifteen, if that!

Voting, moreoever,  is a federal issue but elections are state affairs. To the extent these foibles are the result of state decisions (i.e. to cut short early voting dates as Rick Scott did in FL)they translate into state mistakes, too lengthy lines, etc. Hence, the upper level state instigators - i.e. governors, Secretaries of State, must be held accountable for these fuck ups.

But these things can be fixed! According to Richard Hasen ('The Voting Wars', Electionlaw blog), the problems of the long lines were largely due to Republican legislators cutting back on the days and hours of early voting. NO such problems existed in 2008 when ample early voting dates were available, hence it is passing silly to blame voters in Ohio, Florida, Virginia or anywhere else – for example- for “not getting to the polls early enough”. Case in point: A voter in Michigan, cited on Maddow’s Wednesday night show, arrived at her polling station at FIVE A.M. to find 200 already ahead of her. Clearly, the problems inhere in the flawed state electoral SYSTEMS not in the voters!

Hasen, on Maddow’s program the same night, notes that the Constitution gives congress the power to set the rules for congressional elections (such a the ‘Motor Voter’ law in 1993) and when they do so, the states basically all come along and change their rules with it. It's basically 'Follow the Leader' writ large.

As he notes: “The problem is not one of constitutional power but of political will.”

But what many of us can’t understand, is why congress fails to exert its will here, and is instead content to allow partisan political hacks in the states to turn our elections into fodder for comedic jokes, and comparing states like Florida to "flaccid male organs". This need not be so! Hasen has several recommendations, all of which could originate with some kind of federal legislation, including:

- Simple level: Congress could stipulate money for the states as incentives to implement early voting.

- Better: Just use a federal ballot for national elections which lists the choices for president along with the choices for Senator(s), congress.

- Congress can also mandate which form of tabulation and machines are to be used. It can also mandate regulation of standards for these machines. There is no excuse for not doing so, and it is yet another travesty that states such as New Jersey and Nevada can have commissions which set regs for slot machines but NOT voting machines!  If this were done we wouldn't have absurd situations such as a machine yielding the opposite choice to a voter's will, as shown in the link above.

- Finally, congress can set up a non-partisan agency to administer our elections – such as done in Canada, Australia, and the UK.

Thus, we let the federal government take over all voter registrations, and ensure the standards are met. For myself, I totally concur with Hasen's last endorsement of a non-partisan agency as manifest in other advanced nations, as opposed to leaving critical elections in the hands of party-partisan hacks like Rick Scott, John Kasich, Scott Walker, Jan Brewer or any other miscreants.

The states, then, can have at it with their local ballot choices, including their ‘books’ full of state amendments- which also contributed to long lines, in states like Florida. (Interestingly, many FLA voters took a swipe at the repukes for adding all those amendments, by rejecting most of them). Meanwhile, a single page national ballot - with just the presidential candidates and Senate-House picks can be tabulated in seconds by a regulated machine.

Interestingly, the 'Help America Vote Act' of 2002 was to have allocated nearly $4b to expediting streamlined standards in the states, but as Deforest Soaries pointed out on Chris Hayes' UP this morning, its advancement was torpedoed by the Reeps. Instead of getting the money and go ahead to implement it in 120 days, it turned out to be TWO years! This was then, January, 2004. By the time they got the money, only $400,000, they only had 6 months for the implementation and it wasn't enough to effect anything. The rest as they say is history, including the 2004 thieving of Ohio by Rove and Co.

Make no mistake that Obama's victory in Ohio this time doesn't mean Rove and Co. were not at work. After all, Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence!  As Harvey Wasserman has noted (see also  www.harveywasserman.com):

"The simple truth of Barack Obama's victory is that if it had just come down to Ohio, Mitt Romney might have won. The gears of the election theft machine were well-oiled and running at top speed….until an "October Surprise" named Hurricane Sandy intervened.

Those now rejoicing over the Obama triumph should know that there is absolutely no excuse for leaving this sinister apparatus of electronic election theft in place. Election reform should be at the top of the progressive movement's list, led by the non-negotiable demands for universal hand-counted paper ballots and universal automatic voter registration. As Obama said in his victory speech in reference to the long lines in Florida: "We need to do something about that."

This year, as in 2004, the Rovian blueprint was simple if not clean: keep the election close enough that Ohio and Florida would be the deciders…and then do the deciding."

So what now? We need to work ourselves out of complacency and push congress to enact John Lewis "Voter Empowerment Act", which places the burden for correct registration where it should be, on the federal government. It also clears the path for other positive voting rights' changes, including giving felons back the right to vote after they've done their time. In terms of expediting correct voter information, Lewis' proposed system would use a high speed computing network similar to that implemented under the Patriot Act (i.e. connecting all police forces in a web across the country). Effectively ensuring rapid and accurate transfer of voting info to each state and between states (say if a voter's moved). No need for photo IDs, and no fuck ups regarding processing his or her information.

There is simply no excuse at all to allow our country to contine to be 'Bozo Central' when it comes to voting and citizens exercising their franchise. If our politicos aren't willing to make the needed changes to materially push for streamlined elections like other nations have, then we the People need to take on the mantle and push ourselves. And push hard!

Maddow is RIGHT! Voting Should NOT Be an Endurance Contest!

Rachel Maddow (left) nailed it last night in her extended comment about the trials and travails of early voters (mostly Dems) in S. Florida - waiting in lines for sometimes up to 8 hours!

“Why do you Americans have such a corrupt and ramshackle voting system? The rest of the developed world has various seamless and virtually corruption-free voting authorities at arms-length from the politicians. Is it so hard that the exceptional and chosen people can't get it right?” - John N., Brisbane, Australia (comment in NY Times today)

------
Rachel Maddow on her special last night hit every note where the continued travesty of voter suppression in Florida is concerned, and included camera phone videos taken by the forlorn voters standing in line - especially in Miami's Dade County - in some cases up to EIGHT hours. THINK about that! That is an entire WORK day! You need water, food to survive standing in line that length of time. For the less physically able - the disabled, pregnant women and thousands of seniors, it becomes a 'bridge too far' - an impossible step to take. So they cede their place in line after they're physically unable to take it any longer.
How the hell can this be right? Well, maybe in a banana republic, but the US of A? The technologically supreme nation that fancies itself the envy of the world? Well, not so much in the realm of voting and actual execution of democracy!

Nonetheless, assorted knotheads and knaves continue to make sport about it or fail to call it out for what it is: high level political chicanery that seeks to deliver "leverage" to Romney (recall conservative Paul Weyrich's 1985 remark that the Right gains leverage whenever voting is limited). Case in point, Moron Joe, excuse me, 'Morning Joe', this a.m. who joked to Eugene Robinson (assistant Editor at the Washington Post) that "What do you expect in Florida? I mean, we got crocodiles climbing out of canals in people's back yards. Strange things happen there!"

Bullshit! And btw, Moron Joe, Florida has ALLIGATORS in the canals, not crocs! But this is a simple, stupid diversion, since Florida has had 12 fucking years to fix its political-electoral system since the Bush -Gore debacle in 2000. And oh, btw, to show Florida CAN get it done, look back to 2008 when then governor (and civilized Repub) Charlie Crist DID allow early voting! All systems went smoothly - few glitches if any, but hey, Obama (called by some idiot Floridian repukes 'Obummer') won the state. Crist then became an instant pariah among the 'pukes because well, he broke from the standard 'fuck 'em up' electoral template. Fast forward then to Rick Scott's implausible gubernatorial ascension, and things returned to 'normal' for Florida voting - in other words, fucked up.  (See previous blog).

Meanwhile, Rachel ably took down the widespread canard and deformed meme that  the oft-ridiculed state "can't get its act together." And it's a victim of  "gross incompetence" and a continued "inability to run a simple election."

Rachel, to her credit, wasn't buying any of this horse shit. She noted on her blog:

"The early-voting debacle in the Sunshine State is deliberate. To treat this as the unfortunate result of ineptitude is to miss the point -- Florida Republicans designed the system to work this way.

Today, meanwhile, Rachel likely hasn't yet seen the irritating piece in the NY Times ('On Cable News Networks, A Battle of Bitterness') e.g. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/06/us/politics/on-cable-news-networks-a-battle-of-bitterness.html?hp&_r=0 scrawled by an overpaid nincompoop named Jeremy W. Peters, who blabs:

"Rachel Maddow breathlessly decodes the logic behind the push to overhaul state voting laws: 'The idea is to shrink the electorate so a smaller number of people get to decide what happens to all of us.”

Actually, you blithering, false balance-  false objectivity promoting stooge - Rachel had that exactly correct! The use of significant early voting abolition in Florida and the use of black box computer "patches" (uncertified) in Ohio is exactly designed to reduce the electorate - at least the Democratic side. If you don't know that you need to turn in all your journalist credentials! It's hacks like you that have turned modern journalism into a comic charade and why all your newspapers are going under.

For Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) and GOP policymakers in the state, this is a feature, not a bug. Republicans cut the number of early-voting days in half, on purpose. They prevented early voting on the Sunday before the election, on purpose. Scott, unlike the previous two Republican governors, ignored calls to expand voting hours, on purpose.

GOP policymakers want long lines; they want to make it very difficult for voters to participate in their own democracy; they want Americans to get discouraged and walk away. As one Republican state lawmaker argued after the 2010 election, "I want the people in the State of Florida to want to vote as bad as that person in Africa who is willing to walk 200 miles for that opportunity he's never had before in his life. This should not be easy."

See that? The GOP in FLA want long lines! It's as simple as that. The longer the lines, the more the patience of voters (mainly Dems) is tried, and the more likely they will become exhausted and give up - ceding missed Obama votes, which means Romney has a much smaller mountain to scale. This is why if Florida's tally is close tomorrow night, and Romney ekes out a win, you will likely be able to lay the blame on deliberate voter suppression in the form of Rick Scott cutting early voting days in half, compared to what they were in 2008.

Meanwhile,  Dan Smith, a political science professor at the University of Florida, explaining, "We're looking at an election meltdown that is eerily similar to 2000, minus the hanging chads."

Florida's Gubernator Rick Scott - An Asshole That May Have Ensured A Contested Election

Scene at one of the polling places in Florida, compliments of Gov. Rick Scott who cut early voting days by half.

A couple years ago I wondered in one animated blog how Floridians could elect to the governorship a consummate asshole and likely criminal (his healthcare outfit, Columbia HCA was once found guilty of overcharging Medicare over $600m while Scott was CEO).

"However, federal investigators found that Scott took part in business practices at Columbia/HCA that were later found to be illegal -- specifically, that Scott and other executives offered financial incentives to doctors in exchange for patient referrals, in violation of federal law, according to lawsuits the Justice Department filed against the company in 2001.

The doctor payments were among 10 different kinds of fraud identified by the Justice Department in its 10-year probe of the company, records show. Three years after Scott left Columbia/HCA, the company admitted wrongdoing, pleading guilty to 14 felonies -- most committed during Scott's tenure -- in addition to paying two sets of fines totaling $1.7 billion..."

I also projected in the same earlier blog that in the next major election this dickhead would cause trouble by using voter suppression gambits, shortened early voting times or both. In fact each has occurred, though at least a judge has stopped some of the suppression tactics, while Nathan Sproul and his Repuke henchmen have been exposed in assorted Reep voting frauds.

But Scott did not do diddly about extending early voting times, thereby causing unconscionable voting line waits of up to 6 HOURS as reported in The Miami Herald on Friday. But Scott, unreconstructed asshole of the month that he is (maybe asshole of the year, superseding Mitt Romney) has done neither.

As a number of outside observers have put it: "The extraordinarily long lines and extreme delays created have unujustifiably burdened the right to vote"

That's putting it mildly! Think of the oldsters, pregnant women, disabled and others who simply physically would not be able to withstand such rigors, and hence would have to give up their franchise in the interests of their own health and well being. Does Scott care? Not at all! Like Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris in 2000, the fucker is determined to make the tally so close that it enhances the odds of Mittens to take the state - like Bush Dumbya did in 2000. (In that case, as Greg Palast notes in his book, 'The Best Democracy Money Can Buy', Chapter One, Harris used Choicepoint to create a 'Felon's list' that denied over 157,000 African Americans the right to vote. It basically made the election close enough for Jebbie and Bro Dumbya to steal and tossed the country into a 2-month legal shitstorm and possible constitutional crisis.

Make no mistake - THIS time it will not be graciously given up like Gore did in 2000 - but fought to the fucking bitter end. This election is too damned important to have again, the spectacle of a Banana Republic that passes itself off for a state, fucking up national elections. And yes, my language is rough because that is how I feel, as one who also used to live in the state (Miami and Tampa).  I also hate to see (again) the whole country being made the butt of jokes by outsiders and foreigners, like it was in 2000, because some jackwad who shouldn't even be sitting in any elected office (other than maybe dogcatcher) is again screwing things up.

Reading today's New York Times also disclosed that mail ballots are no use as they evidently contain errors that encompass the possibility that they might be regarded as 'provisional" and we know what happens to those.  Interestingly, the longest lines have been in Miami's Dade County, which coincidentally harbors the largest concentration of Democratic voters. Coincidence? Happenstance? Don't fucking bet on it!

Thanks once again, jag -offer Reich Scott, for bringing disrepute on your stupid ass state and likely the whole country on Tuesday if this election is as close as many pundits believe, and your backward state and its jagoff ruling party is once more at the center of electoral mayhem.

Photo ID Voting Laws: The New 'Jim Crow' Laws At Our Door

During the 'Jim Crow' era of the South, the states of the Old Confederacy were perpetually worried about black voters overtaking their chosen segregationists and making hay. Along with the laws that kept 'White' and 'Colored' accommodations, dining and restrooms separate, as well as water coolers (I was once scolded at the age of ten while traveling through MS, en route with parents for a vacation to Milwaukee for inadvertently choosing a water cooler marked 'colored', then asked if 'can't read') voter suppression was big on the menu. Usually this was done using the ruse of "literacy tests" or some other devious means to disallow any black votes.

Seems now that times haven't changed that much and (especially) since last year as many as 34 states introduced voter ID laws, of which five have been enacted while governors (democrats) in 5 other states have vetoed them. (according to a recent report in the Jan-Feb AARP Bulletin: 'Battle at the Ballot Box', p. 20) Other states are considering them and if all these laws are passed they could have very nearly the same effect of mass voter disenfranchisement as the 50s-early 60s Old South laws. Well, why be surprised when the country seems to have tilted more and more toward all things "Dixie" including on politics, economics and religion since the 1960s? After all, the GOP is now basically the party of the Old South, its politics of "God, guns and Bibles" rules - along with the central economic doctrine of "small gubmint" - ensconced since the time of the Confederacy and Jefferson Davis.

A real problem with confronting voter suppression laws concerns the spread of two memes that appear to reinforce the push for such laws. Simply expressed they are as follows:

1) It's no biggie! After all, you need a photo ID to drive!

2) If it helps stop voter fraud it's worth it!

Meme (1) or "argument 1" if you can even dignify by that, is specious because it flatly conflates a right and a privilege. Voting is a right affirmed in the Constitution, while driving is a privilege. Hence, the meme mixes chalk and cheese, but in a nation often short of critical thinking, this often passes muster. Nor does the comparison to flying and having to present a photo ID to do that pass the smell test. Again, flying - even across country - is a privilege not a right. The same rigid standard simply can't be used for voting.

People who resort to (1) also are usually ignorant of the millions of people affected by the potential photo ID requirement laws. For example, up to 1 in 3 elderly African -Americans would be affected. The reason is that most of these people were born in homes in the rural South where births were never officially recorded. Thus, since obtaining a state photo ID generally requires presentation of a birth certificate, marriage certificate, and other documents....not too mention often high costs - these potential voters are up against it.

The same applies to millions of over-65 American who often surrender their drivers' licenses because of poor vision, but either don't remember to get a generic state ID, or their states don't offer them. In either case, they end up without. According to the AARP report, "nearly 1 in 5 citizens over 65 lacks a current, government issued photo ID". The report also notes "those over 65 are more likely to lack birth certificates because they were born before recording births was a standard procedure".

Students - such as those at university - pose another problem. Many do have IDs but they're useless on account of being uiniversity IDs. What they will need to vote in the states with voter ID laws (see also the list attached) is a proper, government-state issued ID. These can be obtained in most states, but students need to get underway now, including rounding up all the documents they need to support their case, such as birth certificates. They should not wait until the last minute, especially because state motor division offices (where they're issued) are often over-crowded with applicants. Also, there's usually a one month waiting period to actually get the ID in your hands.

The AARP report adds:

"Strict new photo ID laws could make voting this year more difficult for 3.2 million voters in Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin if the new laws stand."

Meanwhile, a lawsuit is challenging the voter ID law in Wisconsin and the Justice Department is reviewing laws in Texas and South Carolina.

Meme (2) became entrenched during the Bush v. Gore battle of 2000, after Bush's brother Jeb and Florida Secretary of state Kathleeen Harris engineered a subtle voter suppression tactic using Choicepoint to place African-Americans on "felons lists". All of this is well documented in Chapter One of Greg Palast's excellent book (now available online free as a .pdf if you google it): 'The Best Democracy Money Can Buy'.

Thus, though over 57,000 black Democratic votes were estimated suppressed in Duval County alone, the Repukes and Bushies circulated the specious counter-claim that it was BUSH at risk from "voter fraud" there, and hence they had to go to the Supreme Court to ensure "equal treatment". All of which is bare bollocks.

But according to Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, quoted in the AARP Bulletin (ibid.):

"It's more likely that an individual will be struck by lightning than that he will impersonate another voter at the polls".

And indeed, the Wisconsin voter ID law, supposedly introduced to thwart such impersonation under the Walker regime, originated despite the fact (according to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC) that only seven instances of such fraud had been determined since 2000, 4 of which were on the Gooper side.

Let us hope this new, odious techno -version of 'Jim Crow' doesn't eliminate the millions of voters Obama needs to secure a 2nd term. The thought of Mitt Romney as President, and governing under a "Bain financial formula" dictate for the one percent - enabling all companies to toss out workers at will for "higher efficiency" - will see most of us homeless, penniless and hungry. Meanwhile Romney's minions will get to even gorge on more foie gras as they catch their weekly rose wine wraps and 18-holes on St. Kitts.
