Dotard Will Soon See That The Coronavirus Is No "Hoax" As Incidents Of Community Spread Increase - And Stocks Remain Volatile

Image may contain: text

"This will be a deus ex machina test of Trump’s authoritarian behavior. Epidemics are not well suited to authoritarian regimes and propaganda...Trump’s history in business — he makes people feel good for a while and then it ends badly — could presage a stock market crash before he exits.,"  -  Maureen Dowd, NY Times,  'Trump Makes Us Ill'

"Trump’s lies, his disparagement of science and scientists, his claim that non-political civil servants are part of the deep state, his lack of credibility, his penchant for political opportunism over the needs of the nation, his pathological embrace of hyperbole, his delight in creating confusion, and his mistaking loyalty for public service puts the nation in grave danger in light of the growing pandemic. He has gutted the health services, slashed much needed revenue for public goods through tax giveaways to the ultra-rich, ousted, Tim Ziemer, one of the most trusted leaders in public health, and appointed a religious fanatic Mike Pence, to head the attack on the corona virus crisis....This is what neo fascism looks like when it ignores social needs for the demands of cravenly loyalty and the accumulation of power and profits. Trump is a menace and danger to the world not just the United States"  -  Henry Giroux, 'Cultlike Ignorance Is Death: Trump And The Coronavirus',

What do you do with a bombastic buffoon of a "leader" who - when faced with his first genuine exogenous crisis -  tries to fob it off as a "hoax"?  Exactly like he tried to do with his impeachment and the Mueller Report.  Well, you recognize first you can't believe a single damned word this deranged,  narcissistic mutt with delusions of grandeur,  says. Also,  if you're going to protect you and yours you're best served going to the CDC website as the Covid-19 virus approaches pandemic status, or seek professional advice on how to prepare.

You will get no real help from the Turd-in -Chief who, again, sees his re-election and the stock market's continued rise as more critical than protecting Americans' welfare. Hence, his constant stream of lies, exaggerations and the lack of his administration to prepare - evidenced by access to barely a few hundred testing kits -  while China and South Korea have been testing thousands.  In line with this it was incredible to me that at Trump's presser Saturday, not a single member of the illustrious press corp asked him, or the CDC's experts, about the availability of testing kits to actually confirm Covid--19 infections.  Without such testing it's pure pie in the sky to be claiming the average American is at low risk, because we've really no idea how many infected folks are walking around with no symptoms.   And yet that is all we heard from the CDC's  Pooh Bahs, "the average American is at low risk".

Meanwhile, in response to another question, Trump  again obfuscated and lied.  He was asked about his rally in North Charleston, SC, where he barked: "This is their new hoax"  - meaning the virus at large. But Trump denied that he called the coronavirus a hoax, and said he really meant that the way the Democrats were portraying it- raising "panic"-   was a hoax.  Well, excuse the hell out of me and them.  As far as I recall this hasn't devolved to an authoritarian dictatorship yet - when concerned media and the opposition party can't criticize a president for lax preparation and lying about it!  To fix ideas, in a number of instances last week I saw and heard - along with wifey- the following expulsions from Dotard:

- First denying then admitting that 14 infected Americans were brought back from China and dispatched on transport with non-infected citizens.

- Claiming with a straight face the disease will "go away in April' because the "heat will kill it"

-  Last Tuesday trying to reassure Americans the virus was "under control" when there wasn't even testing done to confirm that.  (As Business Insider noted)

-  Blathering last Wednesday "It's gonna  disappear, like a miracle"

- Claiming only 15 cases were in the U.S. when it's actually 69, at last count.  (At Saturday's press meet only 22 cases were claimed)

The differences show  there's no real agreement, and how can there be without actual testing using proper test kits?  Which  was another thing: none of the press asked why there were no test kits available, especially after the first U.S. death,  of a male nursing home victim in Washington state.  This also marked the 2nd case of "community spread" i.e. with no known chain to any travel out of the state etc. See also:

Cult-Like Ignorance is Death: Trump and the Coronavirus

What was also really choice is Trump imposing new travel restrictions when incoming passengers from many already affected countries aren't even being tested on entry into U.S. airports.  Hell, Dr. Jen Ashton - appearing on ABC News Saturday night said: "I really don't understand why none of these arriving passengers aren't being tested."  Well, maybe, Dr. Jen, it's because there aren't enough testing kits available in the first place. So these Trump asswits are imposing travel restrictions while people from Covid-19 nations are pouring into dozens of  our main airports and no tests are done.   Not even simple temperature checks, i.e. for fever.   Anyone leading this charge with an IQ over zero?

All of this shows Trump's claims of calling out Dems and media for pushing a hoax or panic are bare balderdash.  Meanwhile, Friday at the CPAC fiasco Mick Mulvaney told a cheering crowd that impeachment was the “hoax of the day”  and now the press thinks the coronavirus “is going to be what brings down the president.”.  Don't those turkeys assembled there grasp they could well be the next victims if the Trump clowns don't get their asses in gear?  Or, are they too damned dumb to figure that out?

This tells me the Trump cretins aren't even prepared should mass quarantines be necessary and people in those isolated zones will be left to suck salt or pound sand instead of  seeing convoys arriving with food and meds. Hence, this traitor is betraying the citizens and sabotaging any useful effort to reckon with the virus, e.g.

I mean, think about it. At a rally on Friday night this asswit actually came out with saying the coronavirus concerns expressed by the rest of the sane universe is a "hoax".   That's all this stupid maggot lives by, it's his mantra for everything he feels threatened by, hoax, hoax, hoax.  But see, this Covid-19 is a genuine existential threat that has now struck 60 nations and counting  - and no attempted misdirection by Trump or his cohort will alter that reality.

The proof in the pudding will arrive this week as the stock market may well tank again, especially on seeing the virus  community spreading in the U.S. and even desperate sound bites from central banks unable to alter the  virus' spread.  Oh, and Trump with no serious plan to deal with it.  Last Friday, Fed Chair Lewis Powell managed to fend off a looming 1100 point swoon by playing cutesy and manipulating the markets by saying he was "prepared to cut interest rates". Earlier, Dotard tried the stock manipulation gambit by promising new tax cuts, i.e. if re-elected.   See e,g.

Having burped that little effort at market manipulation (to appease Herr Trump?) Powell managed to limit the last hour's dive, so the DOW rallied by 600 points to end at 357 odd points down.   A big loss but not as big as it would have been without his intervention.  Meanwhile, the NASDAQ Composite fell as much as 3.5% before bouncing higher to narrowly close in + territory. (The first time that index "has fallen that much and notched a gain for the day"  - according to the WSJ, Feb. 29, p. A1)

But this can't last and can't keep happening.  Powell, no matter how desperate to appease Trump and keep the great Bull rolling on, has exhausted virtually all his ammo and hasn't much left in case an actual recession hits.  As it well may by the fall.  Even the WSJ editorial writers on Saturday ('The Virus and the Economy' p. A14) observed:

"We've been skeptical that rate cuts can address a classic supply side shock like the coronavirus.  Fed funds are already low at 1.5- 1.75% ....If the Fed does cut rates as an insurance policy it should be prepared to raise them again quickly if the virus turns out to be less damaging."

The editors also observed how "stocks pared their losses"after Powell's little trick, noting "the Fed's psychological clout".  Or hey, maybe it's the markets' yen and eagerness for more 'crack' in the form of rate cuts to keep their Bull going on.   But even in an earlier 'Heard on the Street' piece (Feb. 28, p. B12) it was noted 'Fed Can't Inoculate The Economy') that:

"Using monetary policy to counteract the economic effects of the coronavirus would be a bit like using a hammer to unscrew a bolt"

Adding:

"Investors only began waking up to the coronavirus threat this week, and the actual fallout could prove worse than they expect."

Given that short lead time of awareness, we will now be in the 2nd week when the clear economic shutdowns, adjustments begin to sink in - as numerous companies lay off staff, businesses retrench and airline travel is all but halted.  With more economic impacts and the awareness of the hits from them - fewer people going out shopping, eating out, many businesses shuttered, schools closed - forcing parents to take their guaranteed unpaid leave- things will get much worse.  I expect the DOW then, to sink another 8-10 % in the next few weeks, possibly ending up in Bear market territory.

I also expect any more tricks or efforts at manipulation of the markets by Powell - or Trump using happy talk- will not work. Stocks will remain volatile even if some minor recovery 'burps' manifest. But it is nothing to be permanently embraced.  The same  WSJ piece goes on to note:

"The Fed's aim when it eases policies - both cutting overnight rates and in the extraordinary measures  implemented in response to the financial crisis - is to induce businesses and households to borrow and spend more, and save less ."

But this is a fool's errand given both households and businesses will pull in their spending in an extended quarantine scenario.  You can be sure no member of any sensible household will go out dining to run the risk of possible infection, or bowling or going to the cinema, or concerts. Meanwhile, afflicted with many sick workers - or workers whose kids are home from school because schools are closed, they will have to adapt. That means less productivity, fewer profits, larger inventories piling up as factories and warehouses close.  Never mind, as the economic pain threatens even more, some central banks will try to tweak reality any which way they think they can. And yeah, some subset of investors will bite, and maybe most for a time.

In a separate Heard on the Street' piece (Feb. 26, p. B12, 'There Isn't Any Playbook For This Virus Epidemic')  we find the core of the problem on why  those investors who remain deluded are in for a shock.  That is:

"Many on Wall Street  are still adhering to the SARS analogy, even as evidence mounts that the coronavirus outbreak will last longer and spread much further.."

Once the 'Street' grasps this, Katie bar the door, because it will be every investor for himself. We also know the big institutional and corporate investors will be first to bolt as they have most to lose- or so they reckon.   As pointed out in the same piece:

"The epidemic's upshot  may be far steeper market drops and at least local recessions."

But I suspect the recession will be global, as the supply chains close almost completely by the fall, and people have no where to go to spend money - and without consumers, businesses will have no choice but to exact layoffs or close.  Again, the same piece observes:

"Already the interruption of the supply chain from China and now South Korea is more significant than many appreciate and could worsen even if the virus is contained.."

Up to now, I doubt even 1 in 10 Americans has a full appreciation of this supply chain network vulnerability and the consequences of collapse, and difficulties in reinstatement.  The only media person I see even remotely paying any attention to this aspect is Rachel Maddow.

Of course,  it is possible there may be a slight 'bump' in stocks early in the week, as investors try to pin their hopes on central banks (like the Fed)  to provide a "stimulus" to counteract the worst effects of COVID-19;  But this is myopic, magical thinking and even if the markets let collective hearts rule their heads it won't last long.  By the end of the week I predict the DOW and S&P 500 will still be in negative territory.  (Ok, let me put it this way: If that doesn't materialize I will have to re-evaluate investors' grounding in reality, or whether they are snorting too much coke,  or ingesting excess MJ candies to steady nerves.)

As for Trump, we can be sure he will keep beating his "hoax"  drum even as the cases and deaths mount and more and more citizens see he's incapable of performing the most basic presidential duty: protecting American citizens.  This orange-hued pestilence will have to learn the hard way that viruses, pandemics are not influenced or managed by autocratic idiots who think they can control the world with tweets, or subverted sycophants.

Excerpt:
"The threat of a global pandemic is not only troubling from a health and safety standpoint, but also, from a business standpoint. Joe Pinsker, a staff writer for The Atlantic, examines coronavirus’ effect on the stock market in an article published this week, and he sheds some light on why investors react as they do.

"The global stock market is, theoretically, the distillation of how investors think everything that happens in the world will play out in the economy,” Pinsker explains. “Right now, judging by these drops, investors are much less optimistic than they were a week ago. But what they’re predicting is not only how bad the outbreak could be in terms of workers staying home sick, drops in consumer spending or supply-chain disruptions; it’s also how bad people think it could be. Those might turn out to be two very different things.”

Other Voices Weigh In On Dotard's State of the Union

Now, some other voices on the Trump lie fest, otherwise called "State of the Union" (which neither wifey or myself wasted time with):

Excerpt:

"The ghost of Orwell has never been far from Trump’s misleading rhetoric, outright lies, dehumanizing invective and punitive policies. All of the latter were on full display in Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address. Trump’s speech moved between the kind of absolutes one expects from demagogues, including comments that ranged from how great America is (overlooking how millions live in poverty and millions have lost health care under Trump) and how the U.S. economy is in an unprecedented boom (when in reality it grew at its slowest pace since 2016). Trump’s speech also included outrageously false claims about the president’s supposed support for people who have preexisting conditions and protection of Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, when in reality he has taken steps to weaken or eliminate protections for patients with preexisting conditions, and he has proposed cutting funding for all three social programs."

Excerpt:

Trump was clearly on edge. When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held out her hand to shake his before he took the podium, he refused to take it, signaling that there would be no more nods to decorum than absolutely necessary. In what was a first as far as anyone can remember, the Republicans chanted "Four more years" from the floor as he began to speak. Their enthusiasm only got more hysterical as the evening wore on.

Trump delivered the speech in his usual wooden style when he's reading someone else's words on the Teleprompter. He bragged for at least a half an hour about his alleged accomplishments, ungraciously stating as usual that he had succeeded where all his predecessors had failed. And there were some reality-show moments. He announced that he was giving a little girl in the audience a voucher for the school of her choice and acknowledged a 100-year-old Tuskegee airman along with his 13-year-old great-grandson, who aspires to join the Space Force. He really went for the bathos and pathos by surprising a military wife with her husband who had been deployed overseas. Everyone, Republicans and Democrats alike, applauded as expected for these calculated moments of Oprah-like sentimentality.

Many of the "real folks" he acknowledged in the audience were people of color and part of his speech seemed geared to giving the false impression that he is particularly devoted to raising up minorities with appeals to school choice and criminal justice reform. This was likely one of his consultants' ideas, perhaps with the aim of peeling off a few African American men from the Democrats, but mostly in an attempt to lure back some of the formerly devoted white women in the suburbs who find him to be reprehensible.

Wasn't that a pretty sight on Tuesday night when the Slavic Princess hung that worthless scrap of ribbon on Rush Limbaugh's neck, yet another stellar moment in the carefully crafted surreality show Trump and Stephen Miller staged, an impeached POTUS blowing smoke up our collective asses in complete confidence that the lies he was telling would never be refuted on Fox "News" or on any of the right wing talk radio shows that took Limbaugh as their model and god of "excellence," a franchise that has been polluting the American mind over the three decades of Limbaugh's great service to this now "great" nation. Trump's favorite golfing partner and fellow sex tourist was so surprised by this great honor, so moved, so proud that he thumped his chest and pretended to be taken off guard. The Presidential Medal of Freedom? For me? Oh, I'm sooo worthy.

But, as Ernest Borgnine told William Holden in The Wild Bunch, keeping you word only matters in the context of "who you give it to," a bit of situational ethics that Republicans surely would understand. Trump, for instance, has never shown a scintilla of concern about keeping his word whenever going back on it seemed to benefit him even a skosh. Breaking contracts, lying incessantly, screwing people who signed up for his bullshit "university," and parading out a fantasy about the state of things in this country for over an hour this week, a speech in which most every bit of truth was stood on its head.

Excerpt:

As Dear Leader wound up his State of the Union, and Nancy Pelosi tore its pages in quarters as she stood behind him, I had the same reaction that many colleagues out in the Twitter universe had. We all instantly recalled George W. Bush’s words at the end of Donald Trump’s inaugural address in 2017: “Well, that was some weird shit.”

Except that Trump’s speech wasn’t just weird, it was some Nuremberg shit, too, the rhetoric and Republican hysteria in the hall all too reminiscent of those terrifying days of the 1930s when Adolph Hitler harangued adoring crowds, the whole spotlighted production designed for Leni Riefenstahl’s cameras, with the intimidation dial turned up to 11.

Trump’s State of the Union wasn’t in a stadium filled with tens of thousands of Nazis, but it was similarly camera-ready, fueled by craziness as it took advantage of every reality show trick he learned during his years posing as an ersatz billionaire on The Apprentice.

Choosing Between Between One Party State Trumpism And Sanity - A No Brainer

Image may contain: drawing

Americans have now heard about a trillion times that today's midterm election is "the most important in our history".  Well, let us at least agree it's likely the most important in recent history. It will basically determine if the "minority faction" that brought our Republic to its knees two years ago, with the mis-election of Dotard Trump, will continue this infamy and passage into nihilism. Or be checked.  Recall mischief of faction was defined in Federalist  #10  by James Madison as that condition whereby:

"citizens - whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole - are united and actuated by a common impulse of passion (to cast their votes) adverse to the rights of other citizens or the permanent and aggregate interests of the community".

This is exactly what the Trump voters ('the minority")  did in November, 2016. They were motivated by passion and recklessness via Trump's often violent rallies to give a middle finger salute to the rest of the country, e.g.

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, hat and closeup
They now seek to do it again today, not only delivering the middle finger, but to be able to laugh and howl  with the delight of feral apes in the aftermath of this election. Laugh and howl at our total consternation, hysteria and yes, tears - as the promised "Blue wave" dissolves into a puddle.  This, of course, we cannot allow. Indeed, the prevention of further GOP-Trump perfidy may well rest in the hands of white, college-educated women as per a recent WSJ graphic showing their massive tilt toward the Dems:

No automatic alt text available.

Meanwhile, Capt. Sully Sullenberger-  appearing over the weekend on MSNBC -  also gave one of the best takes, in an op-ed in The Washington Post .   On MSNBC's 'Last Word', he said:
"I'm talking to the American people and saying you are the ultimate check and balance. We cannot wait for someone to rescue us we must do it ourselves. Everywhere must vote in massive numbers.

We're not facing nuclear annihilation at the moment but we're facing a more pernicious challenge. Right down to the fabric of our society and the inability to agree on the same facts.

As a former Republican I've already voted and I voted for Democrats...  I could not allow my silence or civility connote acquiescence."

Imagine a basically private guy in terms of politics like Sully, coming out the way he has, to marshal more awareness of the importance of today's vote. If it took this crisis for the hero of the 'Miracle on the Hudson' to speak (and write) as he did, imagine the sheer magnitude with which he perceives the vote today.

Jim Vandehei, CEO and Founder of Axios, best summarized Trump's entire shtick on Real Time, Friday night, referring to an interview conducted recently:

"Every President I've ever covered believed it was their job to bring the boil down. You seem like you need to bring it up. And he said, 'yeah, my people demand it. Even I wanted to calm down they'd tell me they want more, more, more. I said, but you made the conscious decision to turn it up, so what happens if a reporter gets shot. And even then he said, 'It's on them, it's not my job to tone it down.' And that is such a radical departure from previous presidents.

The warnings given above and in weekend remarks by Barack Obama, Joe Biden,  former GOP strategist Steve Schmidt, former FLA congressman Dave Jolly and others are not hysteria. Even as I write this post, the Trump degenerates and their acolytes - including GA Secretary of State Brian Kemp,  are doing all they can to try to intimidate Democratic voters. Kemp - contesting the GA governorship vs. African-American Stacy Abrams,  has launched a bogus investigation into alleged Dem hacking in GA, while Trump and Sessions are fulminating over "voter fraud" - a crime so minuscule and uncommon that it scarcely bears attention. And certainly not in the same league as outright voter suppression or hacking.

In regards to the first, it is evident in Kemp's Georgia, thanks to an AP report,   the slimeball has used "pending" status to confine over 50,000 voters in an electoral limbo. No surprise up to 70 percent of these citizens whose franchise has been put on hold are African-American.  The reason? The registration forms did not "identically" match their names in government data bases.  After Stacy Abrams called this thug tactic out as suppression, Kemp then switched to the "hacking" bollocks. But no one of sense or intelligence is buying that balderdash. (Trumpies, of course, excluded!)

Despite that, Trump wasted no time belching out nearly his 6,500th lie yesterday, snorting:

"Just take a look!  All you have to do is go around, take a look at what's happened over the years, and you'll see. There are a lot of people - a lot of people - my opinion, and based on proof - that try and get in illegally and actually vote illegally"

Of course, Dotard just pulled this out of his fat orange ass. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, which examined all available data for the 2016 election:

"From the tabulation of 23.5 million votes there were  only 30 incidents of suspected noncitizen voting referred for further inquiries or prosecution. Thus, improper noncitizen votes accounted for 0.0001 percent."

Get that?  Not one percent, not one hundredths of one percent, but one ten thousandth of one percent of the total votes!

These reprehensible tactics are all Trump and the GOOPs have left, realizing their "bait with fear"  tactics are unlikely to work, and they simply don't have the numbers to counter the groundswell of citizens rising against them. Citizens determined not to let nihilist Trumpism destroy this nation. Because that is what these criminal tactics are all about, the promotion of thuggery and Trump-driven nihilism.

Jim Vanderhei's interview gets at the essence of Trumpism as a mutation of citizen character to one of predatory grievance seeking.  Jettison or ignore all constitutional norms, just work all those who hate them and desire chaos into a frothing lather. Especially with the purpose of seeing the other side crawl into a hidey hold and weep, licks its wounds. Which aberration turns out to be nihilism more than racism, xenophobia or misogyny.  This was the basis exposed by Garret Keizer  in his recent New Republic piece, Nihilist Nation.

E.g.

The Empty Core of the Trump Mystique | The New Republic

https://newrepublic.com/article/151603/nihilist-nation-empty-core-trump-mystique

Writing:

"My strong suspicion is that along with the undoubted racists and xenophobes in the Trump camp are a number of uneducated white voters who do not hate blacks, Muslims, or Mexicans but rather the educated white liberals whom they suspect of caring more about blacks, Muslims, and Mexicans than about uneducated whites. When Trump said during his campaign, “I love the poorly educated,” he may have revealed more about whom many of his supporters truly hate than David Duke did when he endorsed Trump. So for those white liberals wringing their hands over the purported racism of Trump’s supporters, there is good news and bad news: They don’t all hate black folk. A lot of them just hate you."

And further:

"Arguing with a nihilist is like intimidating a suicide bomber: The usual threats and enticement have no effect. I suspect that is part of the appeal for both: the facile transcendence of placing oneself beyond all powers of persuasion. A nihilist is above you and your persnickety arguments in the same way that Trump fancies himself above the law."

Most telling of all:

"To put it in cruder terms: “The world sucks for me, so I am going to make it suck for you too. I have lost my job, my status as a white male, and may even lose my gun. So you, my smug, privileged friend, are going to lose your civil liberties, your faith in social progress, your endangered species, your affirmative action, your reproductive freedom, your international alliances, your ‘wonderful’ exchange student from Syria.” The rationale is probably not too distant from that of the jealous husband who shoots his wife, her lover, and himself. Enjoying ourselves, are we? We will enjoy nothing!—which is to say, we will enjoy the only thing a nihilist can enjoy.

Which nihilism I suspect is ultimately the noisome dynamic of the Trumpers and Trumpism. "You got yours, but we're gonna make damned sure in the end you get nothing but a big pile of shit!"   A degeneracy of attitude, character and civic consciousness that's a product of attachment to a warped, narcissistic personality.

Hence, the grievance obsession, callous scapegoating of "out groups"   and anti-intellectualism so well documented in Amanda Marcotte's book: 'TROLL NATION: How The Right Became Trump-Worshipping Monsters Set On Ratf*cking Liberals, America And Truth Itself'.

Marcotte paints a mildly hyperbolic but generally well-reasoned and depressing assessment  of how  Trump, his Reepo enablers, their stable of troll pundits and writers, and Trumpist goons have abandoned any hope of winning through reasoned discourse.  Instead, like the QAnon turkeys in tow, they've adopted bad faith claims, wacko conspiracy ideations and culture war hysterics ("The migrant caravan is full of MS13 criminals, and smallpox disease carriers! Aieeeee!")

Bottom line: The knuckledraggers have abandoned civil discourse for nihilist rage and destruction - which will descend on us in spades if these reprobates win again, paving the way for a national nihilism that will likely see the end of this country as we know it within 4-6 years.

Keizer defines nihilism thusly:

"I would define nihilism as a combination of three basic elements: a refusal to hope for anything except the ultimate vindication of hopelessness; a rejection of all values, especially values widely regarded as sacrosanct (equality, posterity, and legality); and a glorification of destruction, including self-destruction—or as Walter Benjamin put it, “self-alienation” so extreme that humanity “can experience its own destruction as an aesthetic pleasure.” Nihilism is less passive and more perverse than simple despair. “Nihilism is not only despair and negation,” according to Albert Camus, “but, above all, the desire to despair and to negate.”

The corollary is that these nihilists - especially if they manage to keep the House-  will get to enjoy themselves in the ultimate schadenfreude  as we- the "uppity" ones, the "globalists",  "the elites",  "the educated" etc., circle the economic and environmental drain.  Oh,  and if we scream in trepidation at the horrific outcome they will hurl more epithets  like "snowflakes" or "Cucks".  In sum, they will laugh even harder, and enjoy themselves more while they pop opioids and swig Moonshine at our despair and hand wringing.   Comity and civility? You can kiss it goodbye.

Blogger and professor Henry Giroux is very clear how Trump's nihilism has veered into fascism, e.g.

"Trump employs endless rhetorical tropes of hate and demonization that set the tone for real violence.

Trump appears utterly unconcerned by the accusation that his highly charged rhetoric of racial hatred, xenophobia and virulent nationalism both legitimates and fuels acts of violence. He proceeds without concern about the consequences of lending his voice to conspiracy theorists claiming that George Soros is funding the caravan of migrant workers, calling Maxine Waters a “low IQ person,” or referring to former CIA director John Brennan as a “total lowlife” and a “very bad guy.” Meanwhile, this inflammatory invective promotes violence from the numerous fascist groups that support him.

Trump thrives on promoting social divisions and often references violence as a means of addressing them. His praise of Montana congressman Greg Gianforte for body slamming a Guardian reporter in 2017 speaks for itself, as does his remark that the neo-Nazi protesters in Charlottesville were “very fine people.”

No wonder Trump is praised by David Duke, the former head of the Ku Klux Klan, and by the Proud Boys (a vile contemporary version of the Nazi Brownshirts). Needless to say, as Karen Garcia notes, Trump’s “frenzied Nuremberg-style rallies” are a cauldron of race baiting and anti-Semitic demagoguery.

We have seen before this collapse of language into a form of coded militarism and racism — the anti-Semitism couched in critiques of globalization, the call for racial and social cleansing couched in the discourse of borders and walls. The emerging discourse of state terrorism in the US alarmingly resembles that of Europe in the 1930s.

Edward Luce rightly reminds us that we have heard this language before. He writes: “Eighty-five years ago on Thursday, Heinrich Himmler opened the Nazi’s first concentrating camp at Dachau. History does not repeat itself. But it is laced with warnings.”

....Trump’s language is neither harmless, nor merely a form of infantilized theater. It is toxic, steeped in a racist nationalist ardor that stirs up and emboldens extremist elements of his base. It adds fuel to a culture capable of horrific consequences, as we have seen with the recent killing of two Black people in a grocery store near Louisville, Kentucky; the sending of pipe bombs to a number of high-profile Democrats; and the mass murder in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

It is also the language of silence, moral irresponsibility and a willingness to look away in the face of violence and human suffering. This is the worldview of fascist politics and a dangerous nihilism — one that reinforces a contempt for human rights in the name of financial expediency and the cynical pursuit of political power."

Can Americans summon the intestinal fortitude, moxie and will to avert the collapse of our Republic?   The early signs are cautiously optimistic:  Democrat Andrew Gillum, for example, is now up by 7 points over his Trump clone rival DeSantis in the polls revealed (CBS)  this  a.m.  for the FLA Governor's race.

It might sound hyperbolic, but this nation's future is exactly what's on the line today, and why Capt. Sullenberger's original header for his op-ed was 'Mayday, Mayday, Mayday'.  Given Sully is not one to get overly excited for nothing, we can take his warning literally as  a real civic  'Mayday!'  and respond accordingly today - as citizens who can then earn the abiding respect of my Revolutionary War ancestors.

As John Meacham said after the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre:

"What happened today is a reminder of the stakes  of the era in which we are living. This is an era of fundamental redefinition of politics and culture. It requires leadership that is steadying , not incendiary and we've seen too much incendiary language from the top."

Of course, even a full- out Dem conquest of congress doesn't mean Trump's abominable behavior will stop or the Ds will "check" it.  (See e,g. WSJ editorial today: 'A Check On Trump? Good Luck!, p. A20), noting the only one who can rein in Dotard's bad beahvior is Dotard.  But that misses the point. At the very least checks and balances will be restored to governance, as the Founders originally envisioned.
