"Duck Commander" Phil Robertson's Degenerate Anti-Atheist Rant Reveals He's Devoid of Morals, Humanity

At the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast  on Friday morning, Duck Dynasty "Commander" Phil Robertson - juiced on self-righteous indignation,  waxed on uninterrupted about some kind of grotesque fantasy situation in which a family of atheists is bound, gagged and raped. That the “Duck Dynasty” clan leader had a national platform upon which to spew bullshit was basically an indictment of our whole society, and in my opinion - a further sign  this society has lost its collective mind, judgment and reason.  What this asshole basically allowed is that he has no concept of atheism, nor any of morality - far less humanity. He's demonstrated himself, in so many words, to be vermin.

“I’ll make a bet with you,” Robertson said in the talk which was later broadcast on Christian conservative radio host Rick Wiles’ program, “Trunews.” “Two guys break into an atheist’s home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him. Then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them, and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him, and then they can look at him and say, ‘Isn’t it great that I don’t have to worry about being judged? Isn’t it great that there’s nothing wrong with this? There’s no right or wrong, now, is there dude?”
“But you’re the one who says there is no God, there’s no right, there’s no wrong, so we’re just having fun. We’re sick in the head, have a nice day.”

Back up, butt brain. No atheist says "there is no right or wrong". What we say, as I repeated in my recent book ('Beyond Atheism, Beyond God'), and earlier from 'The Atheist's Handbook to Modern Materialism' is that morality must be predicated on physical reality not an imagined supernatural one. It must be founded on practical ethics, not absolutist nonsense. This implicitly  means a pure Materialist philosophy which also implies provisional ethics.

Let me elaborate on the first. As genuine Materialists, we can examine the astronomical evidence and determine that our planet is possibly the only inhabited one, at least in our galaxy - if not the cosmos. We can also ascertain that this terrestrial life is possibly all that exists in the cosmos and hence that we must strive to enhance and support it in any way possible. We should emphatically not squander what we have now, while awaiting a mythical afterlife.  Nor squander the lives of others as this crazy co-pilot Andreas Lubitz apparently did  - killing 148 people in the French Alps because he wanted to take out himself.

As Materialists we refrain from looking to any hypothesized deity for deliverance, or lay blame for human ills on some mythical demonic entity. On the contrary, Man alone is responsible for his actions and is the ultimate master of his fate. As  Materialists, then, we  maintain that Man need not suffer extinction as a species if he has the courage and vision to assume control of his destiny through the use of reason.

It isn’t necessary to wave a bible or the ten commandments at a Materialist, nor quote the "golden rule". The true Materialist, by definition, respects his fellow men and reveres all life, since he recognizes (through his philosophy) that they share a planet that may be unique in the cosmos. Thus, the true Materialist treasures and conserves the Earth's finite store of resources, since he comprehends that Earth also has one life to live - and there is no more after the existing resources are consumed.

If dunderhead Robertson knew any of this then he'd realize that his confabulated deviant fantasy of raping little girls  and their mother not only flew in the face of atheism but  common decency and humanity. Indeed, only a depraved pervert deprived of any humanity would come up with such an abomination in his feral mind.  It,  indeed, shows Robertson lacks any scintilla of humanity....or residue of morality.

Now what about provisional ethics? Any persistent observer of human social interaction will note that the vast majority of people are law-abiding and decent folk who naturally practice a common-sense, utilitarian ethics similar to what has been described. For proof, one need only look as far as the upstanding Atheist or agnostic who inhabits every community and who - though he disdains a deity, nevertheless treats his fellows with compassion and respect. No supernatural law or commandment ordains this behavior. Instead it is the conscious and deliberate recognition that the promotion of the welfare of others is directly linked to one's own welfare.

Unfortunately, what the religionists have done is to take the natural code of ethics most people follow and embellish it with a blizzard of superstitious precepts and injunctions. When these are stripped away one arrives at provisional ethics. As described by Michael Shermer ('The Science of Good and Evil'):

"Provisional ethics provides a reasonable middle ground between absolute and moral relative systems. Provisional moral principles are applicable to most people, for most circumstances, for most of the time - yet flexible enough to account for the wide diversity of human behavior"

To fix ideas, in the case of the  nun excommunicated several years ago, for saving a 27 year old mother’s life at the expense of her fetus, the  moral choice was either to let the birth occur and see both mother and infant die, or prevent the birth (because of the mother’s blood pressure complications) and save the mother. She opted to maximize life chances for the mother as opposed to dramatically reduce them for both mother and child.

This is a perfect example of atheistic morality  in action. Thus, in provisional morality the greater relative good is always chosen over the lesser one. In this case, two deaths with two life saving efforts represented  the lesser good, while one death with one life saving effort represents the greater one.

In the case of Brittany Maynard's decision to end her life after being diagnosed with inoperable brain tumor, her choice to end her life was a greater good over merely existing in a debased vegetative condition based on the specious presumption of "sanctity of life" demanded indiscriminately for any and all conditions. (Absolutist morality).  Hence, the greater good here is her ending the suffering and degradation of her life quality rather than allowing it to progress to the stage she was unable to make any authentic choice.

In both cases and many others the atheist disdains and rejects morality that (in the words of Sam Harris): "pursues aims that are flagrantly immoral, in that they needlessly perpetuate human misery, while believing these actions are morally obligatory. "

Adding that such   "pious uncoupling of moral concern from the reality of human suffering" is unacceptable.

We see then that Robertson's portrayal of atheists as total scalawags and renegades with no moral compass is totally off base and in fact, insane. The atheist family he has raped and killed in his debased mental ideation then, must be seen as actually reflecting HIS own lack of morality and no one else's. We assess  from this that his "morality" is debased and perverted since it would slaughter and rape those with a different life philosophy under the assumption they don't care and  believe that "anything goes".

At root, not only is Robertson responsible for hatching such vile swill glorifying  child rape and murder, but the media shares blame for giving this depraved piece of filth  a stage on which to spout his degenerate fantasies - as a basis to supposedly condemn atheists.

Rush Limbaugh Is A Bombastic Moron For Going After CBS & Steven Colbert

It's somewhat amazing to me that anyone with an I.Q. over room temperature even tunes in to Rush Limbaugh any more. This guy demeans those who call in to his foolish show, and he demeans the whole country with his babble. We'd seen it earlier - in the run-up to the 2012 elections when for three days running he viciously attacked Sandra Fluke personally,  distorting the contraception issue and finally - after women across the country (at least the ones with brains) got up in arms, offered an "apology".

Anyone with two neurons in their gray matter knew this "apology" was bollocks. I mean, any sensible person - and that includes Ms. Fluke- could tell the genuine article from grandstanding and excuses wrapped in PR. Especially as El Swinebo made his vile comments for not one, not two but THREE days running, and then blamed liberals because he "made the mistake of following their example" as opposed to his own good conscience.

The truth is that this odious, grunting porker miscreant: a) feared the exodus of no fewer than 35 major advertisers already, and b) oinked what was in his heart - which 'oink' also echoed what most of the Woman-hating GOP believe in their own heart of hearts (accounting for their tepid reactions), as well as Rush's sickening listener audience - wherever they lived (mostly in the education backward Red States - where most still believe the Duck Dynasty are real rednecks as opposed to pretenders, see e.g.

http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-duck-dynasty-fake-rednecks-and-how.html

Now, this Blowhard of Bombast has once again gone off the rails, as we beheld him frothing at the mouth in a vid-clip played last night on Chris Hayes' ALL In  (MSNBC) show. Evidently, Limbaugh is outraged that CBS could have picked Steven Colbert (of Comedy Central's 'The Colbert Report') to take up the prized 'Late Show' gig next year, since David Letterman announced he's leaving.

Anyone who's watched Letterman knew at once that his quixotic persona would be difficult to replace. The first person I had thought of, indeed, was Mr. Colbert - who in his Comedy Central gig-  portrays a Right Wing blowhard similar to Bill O'Reilly.  After O'Reilly once complained about Colbert's shtick, Steven replied:

"Mr. O'Reilly!  I DO agree with everything you say on your show even when the words don't agree with each other!"

Limbaugh, in his tirade, bellowed:

"What this hire means is a redefinition of what is ‘funny’ and a redefinition of what is comedy, and they’re blowing up the 11:30 format under the guise that the world’s changing and people don’t want the kind of comedy that Carson gave us or even Letterman.

It’s the media planting a flag here. I think it’s maybe the media’s last stand, but it’s a declaration. There’s no  unity in this hire. They’ve hired a partisan so-called comedian to run a comedy show.”

He went on to claim the CBS was "attacking the Heartland" - whatever the hell that means - but I suppose it means that hiring a true progressive (who not long ago appeared before congress on behalf of migrant workers) was inimical to Red State interests. Of course, this is horse manure, Red state interests and welfare are in the crapper because most of them vote against their own economic interests, a condition superbly described in Thomas Frank's book, 'What's the Matter with Kansas?'  And because Red state voters keep pulling the levers for the 'pukes, it's no surprise that they never get ahead  - since the Repukes are the party of Big Business (well, to be accurate, the Dems are as well, to an extent - with their Neoliberal - pro market parasites - but not to the extent of the pukes who have the likes of the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson trying to buy elections.)

Meanwhile, another puke-loving zombot on Breitbart.com railed against Colbert as a person engaged in "political blackface" - whatever the hell that means - for impersonating a nutso Right winger on TV. Evidently, the bozos at Breitbart don't understand the concept of political satire - as Limbaugh doesn't either.

For those of us who partake of late night comedy, it will be as much fun watching the righties squirm as it will be seeing Colbert handle the Late Show with his typical talent and aplomb.

A Newsflash for Extreme Fundie Religious Believers: Rattlers Can Kill You!

Mark 16:17-18  “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will … pick up snakes with their hands.”

I recall I was ten years old when I saw my first King Cobra - came within five feet of it, in fact - at the Miami Serpentarium, in March, 1956. The 11 -foot long lethal reptile had been brought out of the 'snake house' to be "milked" by  snake expert Bill Haast.  As Haast managed to first snare the snake out of a bag, then gently place its fangs to pierce a rubber covering on a glass, my brothers and I watched transfixed.  There, before us, as the snake bit wildly, venom seeped into the glass container. This would then be dispatched to labs where antivenin serum would be prepared.

When my middle brother Jerry asked Haast how many times he'd been bitten, he answered "At least twenty".   But that was part of the risk of the job when one sought to handle such snakes in order to procure venom.

Less understandable is why some ordinary mortal would deliberately choose to handle a poisonous snake based on some quote in the Bible. (Mark 16: 17-18).  By now virtually everyone not inhabiting a cave knows the sad story of one  Jamie Coots, a third-generation snake-handling Pentecostal preacher.  Coots, one of the stars of “Snake Handlers,” a reality show on the National Geographic Channel,  handled his last snake Saturday night after being bitten by one of his serpents. He died after refusing medical treatment, expecting that as in the Mark verse, the 'Lawd' would save him if he was righteous.

According to Christianity Today, “Emergency workers tried to convince the minister's family to let them take him to the hospital, but his wife and son refused.”

According to son Cody Coots:

"He always said, 'Don't take me to the doctor. It was totally against his religion."

But what kind of religion preaches nonsense? Well, sadly, 99% of them do. They make insane claims that violate common sense, reason and logic - then wonder in the aftermath how so much harm could have manifest.    Much of this hinges on whacked out beliefs, that aren't supported by any kind of science.

For the Materialist, this registers as insane. As much so (ok, not quite) as believing no energy is needed to support end of life perceptions. In this case, that a poisonous reptile can be 'charmed' and handled by one's belief if it is just strong enough. Don't laugh though! There are actually people who believe Noah was swallowed by a whale and lived 3 days in a vat of hydrochloric acid before walking out. But hey, at least believers don't try to emulate that!

Coots who was 41, was a pastor at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name in Middlesboro, Ky. He had been bitten nine times over a period of 22 years and he claimed to have recovered each time through prayer.  Of course, this also is irrational nutso jabber. He recovered likely because the bites weren't lethal enough - and maybe he had some first aid handy or at least a venom suction kit.  There's also the element of luck. But no Materialist will accept or believe he just magically recovered because of prayer! That's like believing prayer can heal people in hospitals - a trope long since exposed as bunkum.

Last year he told NPR that "I feel in my heart, because God opened it up to me, if I stopped taking up serpents I would die and go to hell. It is in the Bible, and we tell people because it's in the Bible you must believe it."

This also is the babble of a guy as hooked on his brand of balderdash as Pastor Mike used to be on his. Recall ol' Mikey had condemned my niece  - then with breast cancer - to "Hell" because she chose to find solace and comfort in the spirituality of Eckanckar instead of being "saved by Jesus".

Just like Coots, Pastor Mike also used to yelp : "It's in the Bible!"  Well, there's a lot of bullshit in the Bible - in fact I estimate 90 percent is BS, so are you going to follow or believe ALL of it? Well, only if you're nuts or deluded.   One need only peruse Leviticus, Chapter 20, to see how an insane believer might justify a host of atrocities simply because "God said to do it! It's in the Bible!"

Consider just verse 8:

For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him. "

And dutifully following this, a 78-year old grandma in Colorado some ten years back dragged her 8 year old grandson into a hot boiling tub because he had cursed her. Fortunately, the kid's mother arrived in time to stop the final act, though she did assist in holding the boy down at least until he got a good scald to 'teach him Bible law'!

Other choice Leviticus passages:

(10) "And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death."

(12)"And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them."

(13)"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them"

The last, especially taken literally, would give any fundie  nutwhack a putative basis for going out and slaying homosexuals. "Hey man, the Bible God said to do it!"

Again, clearly, the Bible - KJV or any other, can't be taken literally. Further, the fact that fundies don't carry out these injunctions shows they don't take the verses literally. If they did take their bibles literally, they'd be out on the streets every night executing homosexuals. So this begs the question of why some small sect or cult would engage in snake handling.  I surmise it's to set them apart from other fundies, and also because they have little or no insight into the science of reptile behavior - and why a snake like a rattler can't be induced to take God or human  belief seriously. It has only  a rudimentary consciousness, after all.

The other aspect is the media also plays a role, NAT Geo providing a stage for this bollocks - merely to get 'eyeballs' - just like A&E did with its Duck Dynasty farce. See e.g.
http://brane-space.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-duck-dynasty-fake-rednecks-and-how.html

The National Geographic Channel promoted the show by describing it thusly:

“In the hills of Appalachia, Pentecostal pastors Jamie Coots and Andrew Hamblin struggle to keep an over-100-year-old tradition alive: the practice of handling deadly snakes in church. Jamie and Andrew believe in a bible passage that suggests a poisonous snakebite will not harm them as long as they are anointed by God’s power. If they don’t practice the ritual of snake handling, they believe they are destined for hell. Hunting the surrounding mountains for deadly serpents and maintaining their church’s snake collection is a way of life for both men. The pastors must frequently battle the law, a disapproving society, and even at times their own families to keep their way of life alive.”

Keep their "way of LIFE" alive? How about keep their insanity alive? Keeping a collection of rattlers and other poisonous snakes?  The whole blurb reeks with conferring gravitas on guys that ought to be confined to an institution with ECT administered thrice daily along with thorazine.

Meanwhile, Christianity Today reported that:  “Snake handling has seen a small-scale resurgence among young Pentecostals in Appalachia, spawning a reality show and a religious freedom case. The New York Times even noted how Hamblin and his supporters hoped to become a ‘new front in the battle for religious liberty.’

Ah yes, once more appeal to the bogus meme of "religious liberty". Like the Catholic FOCUS kids - just as deluded - appealed to have birth control stripped from the Affordable Care Act - why else? To preserve their "religious liberty". How about protecting the rest of us, the sane people, from religious bollocks!

To me, as a long time lover of reptiles (having kept assorted snakes, iguanas, gator, and Anoles, Racerunners, Skinks)  one of the other appalling aspects is how the animals have been abused by these bible -beating fools.  In mid-November of last year, the New York Daily News reported that Tennessee’s Wildlife Resources Agency seized 53 venomous snakes and noted: “Some were old and sick. Others were young, as tiny as 4 inches and easily capable of slithering out of their containers and into the pews. Some snakes that the officials found were already dead."

So not only do these numb skulls think they're protected by God from snake bites, but they also have no clue how to care for the snakes in their possession.  When they therefore yap and yelp about "religious liberty" they are really demanding the right to do with the snakes as they damned well please.   And the nonsense that the seizures were “unconstitutional”  doesn't even pass the most basic laugh test.  There's not a damn word in the Constitution about any right to keep snakes in horrific conditions, for the purpose of entertaining human idiots. And don't even try to put this crock of crap under the "religious liberty" mantle!

In a statement Sunday, National Geographic TV said:

”In following Pastor Coots for our series ‘Snake Salvation,’ we were constantly struck by his devout religious convictions despite the health and legal peril he often faced. Those risks were always worth it to him and his congregants as a means to demonstrate their unwavering faith. We were honored to be allowed such unique access to Pastor Jamie and his congregation during the course of our show, and give context to his method of worship.  Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”

Let's hope if the NAT Geo bunch is serious, as they also purported to be about a "lost bullet" in the JFK assassination, they will cease and desist from actively promoting and participating in this side show nonsense - which is what it is.  As for the snake-handling congregations, they need to find other avenues to express their devotion and sincerity of belief.

Say like setting up a food kitchen for hungry fellow citizens, or helping the poor in general.   Make your religion a vehicle for expressing the most sincere elements of your Book - like taking seriously:

"Whatever you do for these, the least of my brethren, that you do unto me".

As opposed to turning your beliefs into a Carnival side show.

The ''Duck Dynasty" Fake Rednecks - And How They Played Red State America

The fakers from 'Duck Dynasty' - before they grew beards, doffed camouflage, adopted a "god fearin'" attitude and got their own TV show on A&E to dupe millions

I believe it was P.T. Barnum who once opined, "There's a sucker born every minute". Well one can certainly say that about the millions who've fallen to the 'Duck Dynasty' clowns after it was revealed the whole shtick was a big act put on by yuppies- who clearly saw a way to cash in on the vast "Red state" love of rednecks that permeates the 'land of the free'.

I bring this up because one of them - in redneck drag- was actually trotted out (naturally in the company of the Repukes) during the Obama state of the union. Didn't this character even have a clue his guise was exposed? That he was busted? Didn't his Reepo handler know that?

The break on exposing these guys came originally via a GQ article on the scam. But even that partly bought into the myth that they're real "godly folk" - yeppers, that also love 18 holes of golf and lots of amenities from fooling millions into believing this BS.  The actual source of exposure turned out to be a Political Blind Spot report from late last year titled “How a Wealthy, Clean Cut ‘Duck Dynasty’ Tricked the World for Publicity.”

That report displayed a series of Robertson family photographs from before the show that contrasted strongly with the beard-laden, camo-garbed image the Robertson men have cultivated in the public eye.  In one photo, the brothers posed with golf clubs apparently in front of a pool (see image).

In another, Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson posed on the beach with his family displaying an even worse haircut than he currently sports.

According to the original source, Luzer, for Political Blind Spot:

“Rednecks might sometimes play golf, but rednecks do not go on golf outings with their entire family. They do not pose with golf clubs and all of their brothers at the country club after a great game.. Seriously? He’s barefoot on the beach with frosted tips?

So A&E appears to have taken a large clan of affluent, college-educated, mildly conservative, country club Republicans, common across the nicer suburbs of the old south, and repackaged them as the Beverly Hillbillies.  And the outcome? 14 million Red State 'Muricans have jumped on their bandwagon.  After Phil was dumped from the show, they've yelped, put up Facebook support posts and  generally howled in their defense  - not realizing they've all been played.

The Duckster con almost reminds me of the "Balloon boy" farce of several years ago, when millions actually believed a small boy could be carried aloft for miles and miles in a hot air balloon - despite the fact anyone with passing acquaintance with basic physics would have known it was nonsense. In the case of the 'Duck Dynasty' bunch, any sensible person with some intellectual heft ought to have seen through the shtick and realized NO one turns duck hunters into a frickin' "dynasty"!  Nor do any REAL duck hunters exist in any dynasty. The ducks would have to be made of gold for that to happen. While in the real world, most duck hunters barely manage to get by - as I found when I visited Baton Rouge in 1969.

So again, we come to the need for more critical thinking in this country - as opposed to swallowing wholesale  whatever one sees on the tube, or anywhere else (especially NSA hearings)
