Aristotle, The Principle Of The Mean And What One WSJ Columnist Gets Totally Wrong

Aristotle: Articulated the Principle of the Mean

"What to make of Trump’s endless profanity? He’s unhinged and mentally incapable of the job. He should one hundred percent be removed by use of the 25th Amendment. Anyone willing to impeach on day one and remove Trump from office on day two has my vote in the midterms. Enough already with this cruel toxic clown." - NY Times comment

In his recent WSJ essay, 'Where Did The Independent Leaders Go?' (Oct. 5, p. A15) Joseph Epstein rails against the nation's bleak political landscape, replete with "ambiguity, antipathy and ambivalence."  He then invokes Aristotle "he is happy who lives in accordance with complete virtue" adding:

"The virtuous life for Aristotle was marked by finding the mean or happy medium, when confronted with rivaling claims. The happy medium is what is missing from our political life."

But who does he name as 'virtuous politicians'?

"There are no political leaders I find admirable apart from Benjamin Netanyahu and Vlodymyr Zelensky. By contrast there are many outright villains on the scene."

None of which include the current felon and tyrant occupying the White House in the person of Donald J. Trump. Showing the only grasp he has of Aristotle was probably extracted from a Cliff Notes version of The Nichomachean Ethics. Especially as he includes Bibi Netanyahu as one of the leaders worthy of admiration. The same degenerate who likely knew of the Hamas Oct. 7, 2023 attack well in advance and did nothing. Then in its wake oversaw the slaughter of 70,000 in Gaza including medical - health teams. This is also the renegade who helped Trump launch the war on Iran which killed over 1,800 including school kids and sent the entire world into an economic maelstrom - provoking Iran to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. The last thing one can say about Bibi is that he's in any way "admirable."

What has Epstein to say about Trump, the Hitler wannabe? Anything? Yes.

"How did this political situation come about? Some would blame Donald Trump whose ready recourse to invective has doubtless intensified our sad situation."

And that's all you have? His invective? What about what he's DONE? Mayhap he missed one of the thousands of pieces documenting Trump's reign of terror, e.g.

Trump Reigns as Unapologetic, Dark Lord of Misrule

Unable to perceive Trump is at the center of all the hate, division, political polarization and disruption. From dispatching thugs into Blue city streets to round up and deport immigrants - even killing U.S. citizens in the process, to killing hundreds using Hellfire drones in fishing boat strikes in the Caribbean, to  already having incited an insurrection that devastated the Capitol in 2021, and then pardoned the rabble traitors who did it. Nope, Epstein has a total blind spot regarding Trump's role in destroying our political landscape, exemplified when he writes at the end of his piece:

"The happy medium is what is missing from our political life.  But 'My way of the highway might suffice as our current political slogan."

Failing to see or acknowledge this is precisely Traitor Trump's core slogan, amped up with jet fuel ever since the Conservo Supremes gift of immunity back in 2024.  Why is Joseph Epstein so blind? Well, because he hasn't really read Aristotle.

"Moral virtue" (in Aristotle's book, 'The Nichomachean Ethics'), is that state of character in which a person has the habit of choosing the mean between the extremes of excess and deficiency.

But this is exactly the deficiency self-evident in every Trump action. He is incapable of ever finding the 'mean' in any decision or action or communication.  As when he blurted out on his Trash Social on Easter:

"Open the fucking Strait, you crazy bastards, or you'll be living in hell. JUST WATCH! A whole civilization will die tonight never to be brought back again."

No one with any sentience can say this is a person at a 'happy medium' or mean in his communications, morality or mental stability. Indeed, Peggy Noonan in her WSJ column in the wake of this outburst (April 11-12, p. A13) wrote:

"The post left his friends and foes slackjawed. They constituted hitting a new bottom, a new and infernal, face-lit-by -flames bottom, in world communications."

Adding:

"The posts weren't showbiz they were sinister. You destabilize the world when, as the American president, you say such things. You rob your own nation of a claim to moral seriousness."

Got that, Mr. Epstein? Moral seriousness. Hence, we can acknowledge that  to Aristotle the "mean" was in its way a measure of excellence - the peak of what was "just right" given the situation and people involved. Did Trump demonstrate that with his outburst, or the future ones - including from a recent rally in Nebraska where he invited Iran to "take out" two American cities, e.g.

Mentally Ill Trump Thinks It’s Funny to Joke About Iran Bombing US Cities Into Oblivion

Though the reactionary media at FOX treat it as another Trump joke. It is not, and this incessant 'if he says off the wall stuff it's joke' is what destroys the reasoning power of too many pundits, including the likes of Epstein. Who, if he really read Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics'  would never fob the responsibility for our pathetic state of polity onto anyone but Trump.

Let's get back to the details of what the medium means which escapes Epstein.  "Just right" means redounding to the benefit of the most people, not the least.  Trump's assorted outbursts - as well as his threats against voting by mail do not do that. In addition, the common element underscoring Aristotle's moral virtues is conformity with right reasoning. That is, taking all aspects of a particular situation into account to come to a correct choice. That is, the sort of choice an impartial observer would come to. And it is emphatically what Dotard Trump has never done.

As Aristotle articulates it in detail:

"The Just then, is a certain proportionable thing. For proportion does not merely apply to number in the abstract, but to number generally, since it is equality of ratios and implies four terms at least (that this is the case in what is called discrete proportion is plain and obvious, but it is true also in continual proportion, for this uses the one term as two and mentions it twice, thus A:B:C may be expressed A:B::B:C. ....It will stand then thus: A:B::C:D, and then permutando, A:C::B:D and then (supposing C and D to represent the things) A+C:B+D::A:B. The distribution in fact consisting in putting together these terms thus: and if they are put together so as preserve this same ratio, the distribution puts them together justly. So then the joining of the first and third and second and fourth proportionals is the Just in the distribution, and this Just is the mean relatively to that which violates the proportionate, for the proportionate is a mean and the Just is proportionate. "

That leads to the conclusion:

"The Unjust is that which violates the proportionate."

Trump, however, constantly violates the proportionate as my numerous examples have already shown - from killing hundreds of fishermen in boats under the pretext of being 'drug runners' - when he pardoned an actual drug king, to launching a war of choice on Iran, to dispatching ICE thugs into U.S. cities to terrorize the populations.

This warrants further elaboration by way of Aristotle's "Principle of the mean".   To briefly put it into perspective:   Every considered action - for whatever reason - has a "mean" or middle choice, as well as two extremes, one deficient, the other in excess.   The "just" or "mean state" of action then - based on the above articulation - means one avoiding either extreme.

For example, in the case of the reckless immigrant deportations the Trump bunch would only reach a just state deporting confirmed criminals. Not deporting 370,000 hard working Haitians - many of whom have been in the country ten years of more - assisting in nursing homes, hospitals, as well as home health aides which many incapacitated seniors need. But no, the DHS just wantonly deports en masse, including to nations like Sudan and Liberia where the immigrants don't come from.

We see then that Aristotle's "moral virtue" exercised in moral action can lie between the excess of extreme moral indignation leading to persecution (i.e. Trump's extra- judicial killings of fishermen in boats) or laxity by dismissing said transgressions(i.e. Trump's pardons of over 1,600 insurrectionists).   This cognitive assessment of the mean is not easy but ought to be within the reach of any sane and decent human. As Aristotle reminds us (p.32, The Nicomachean Ethics):

"And so it is hard to be good, for surely hard it is in each instance to find the mean point...and so to act in due proportion, at the right time, with the right object, and in the right manner."

One thing we can aver, at least those of us who've really read Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics, is that neither Donald Trump or his MAGA cult, qualify.  And also Joseph Epstein would do well to read the whole book before he next opines on our politics meeting Aristotle's standards (or not), as opposed to the 'Cliff Notes' version.

The U.S. benefited from a major sociocultural "superpower" for decades, but now, President Donald Trump's "cruelty and lawlessness" have that power "crumbling before our eyes," per a new analysis from The i Paper.

Writing for the outlet on Saturday, special correspondent and columnist Patrick Cockburn highlighted the now "grossly out of date" sentiments from the beloved 1942 film, Casablanca, in which would-be refugees desperately tried to reach the U.S. in order to escape "fascism, violence and corruption." This image of the country, he argued, "had at least some substance" at the time, and until very recently.

Trump’s Erratic Behavior and Extreme Comments Revive Mental Health Debate - The New York Times

Excerpt:

As the president threatens to wipe out Iran and attacks the pope, even some former allies and advisers are questioning whether he has grown increasingly unbalanced, describing him as “lunatic” and “clearly insane.”

A series of disjointed, hard-to-follow and sometimes-profane statements capped by his “a whole civilization will die tonight” threat to wipe Iran off the map last week and his head-spinning attack on the “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy” pope on Sunday night have left many with the impression of a deranged autocrat mad with power.

It is not just a concern voiced by partisans on the left, late-night comics or mental health professionals making long-distance diagnoses. It can be heard now among retired generals, diplomats and foreign officials. And most strikingly, it can be heard now on the political right among onetime allies of the president.

Ty Cobb, a White House lawyer in Mr. Trump’s first term, told the journalist Jim Acosta that the president is “a man who is clearly insane” and that his recent string of belligerent, middle-of-the-night social media posts “highlights the level of his insanity.”

In a highly aggressive 40-minute speech to the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, President Donald Trump once again issued ominous threats to Iran, saying: “I have a very big decision to make. Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill or destroy people or countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?”

He implied that his “very big decision” would come after the midterms, suggesting that Iran is waiting to make a deal until then and, if one isn’t forthcoming, then he would choose annihilation.

In the CECOT affair, hundreds of migrants were flown to El Salvador’s mega-prison without hearings — and the secretary of homeland security made a well-publicized visit there to gloat about their harsh treatment. As federal agencies posted triumphant videos of raids and arrests, and Mr. Trump suggested that American citizens should be next, the message was: Be afraid.

Every administration tries to shape the culture. What sets this one apart is not the ambition, but the means and the scale — not persuasion but coercion, and not on one front but everywhere all at once, in ways that were unprecedented and found by courts to be unlawful. Mr. Trump and his administration sought to bully and commandeer private institutions, to redirect the culture, and to remake society from above by force and fear.

One of the enduring mysteries in today’s American political life is why so many Republican politicians and their friends are adopting or promoting openly Nazi symbols, iconography, and slogans.

Is it a shout-out to the hardcore racists and haters that make up the GOP’s base, all just a performance to get enough votes to win elections? Or a proclamation that the end-goal of Republican governance is the destruction of American democracy, perhaps in deference to Vladimir Putin? How about it’s being a bizarre attempt at trolling people old or well-educated enough to remember or know what Nazism inevitably leads to?

And why are America’s mainstream media so unwilling to even report on, much less discuss, all the Nazi and neo-Nazi references surrounding Trump and today’s captive Republicans?

Reviewing Algebra II (Conclusion): Solving Simultaneous Equations

In Part 5 we conclude this series on Review of Algebra II by examining three methods for solving linear simultaneous equations - which form an important part of  any proper Algebra II course.   Three primary modes of solution include: i) By substitution (often the simplest), ii) graphically and iii) using determinants.  Each of which will be shown in the sample problem.

The last is especially important given determinants actually have their origin in connection with the problem of solving simultaneous linear equations.

A pair of values that satisfies each of two equations in two unknowns (say one for x, the other for y) is a simultaneous solution of the two equations.

Take the following simultaneous equation, with unknowns in x, y:

3x + y  =  12 and x - 3y = 14

To solve by substitution, we take the 1st eqn. and solve for y:

y =   12 - 3x

Then subst. this y into the 2nd equation.

x-  3( 12 - 3x) = 14

And solve for x:

x - 36 + 9x = 14

10x  =  14 + 36 =  50

x = 5

Now subst. x = 5 back into 2nd eqn.

x - 3y = 14

Þ

5  -  3y  = 14  Or:  3y = 5 - 14 = -9

Then:  y =  -9 / 3

y =  -3

The pair can also be solved graphically yielding:

The graphs are seen to intersect at x = 5 and y = -3.

These simultaneous equations can also be solved using determinants and indeed determinants were developed originally to solve such equations. For a generic pair of equations:

a1x +  b1y =    c1

a2x +  b2y =   c2

We have the main determinant:

Þ

D = a1 b2 -  a2 b1

However, for the solution x we need the ratio of the determinants, i.e.

Where for the numerator:  D2 = c1 b2 -  c2 b1

For the solution to y we have:

The pair of our original eqns.:  3x + y  =  12 and x - 3y = 14

Yields:  a1 = 3,   b1 = 1  and   c1  = 12

a2 = 1,   b2 = -3  and   c2  = 14

Form main determinant from  a1 , b1, a2, b2 :

Þ

=   (3)  (-3) – (1)(1) = - 9 -1 = -10

Solve for x:

Given top determinant: D2 =  c1 b2 -  c2 b1

= (12) (-3) – (14)(1) =  -36 -14 = -50

Then:  x = -50/-10 = 5

Solve for y:

Given D2 = a1 c2 -  a2 c1

= (3) (14) – (1) (12) =  42 – 12 = 30

Then: y = D2/ D =30/ -10  = -3

A shorter (but less instructive, i.e. faithful to the origin) method of finding the x,  y solutions entails simply replacing the respective x and y-columns in the main determinant with the constants (i.e. answers, 12 and 14).

Then for the single x- determinant (Dx), after replacing the x-column with 12 and 14:

Þ   (12)(-3) -  14 (1) = -36 -14 = -50

And for the single y- determinant (Dy) ,  after replacing the y-column with 12 and 14:

Þ   (14)(3) -  12 (1) = 42 -12 =  30

Then the respective solutions are:

Practice Problems:

1) Solve the system below by substitution:

3x - y = 4

5x + 2y = 3

2)Solve the linear system below graphically and by determinants:

2x - y = 10

5x + 2y = 7

3) Solve the system below by substitution and by determinants:

4x - y = 5

3x + 2y = 12

4) Solve the pair of equations below graphically, by substitution and using determinants:

2x – 3y = 8,

3x + y = 1

Actual (Not Paper) Patriots Ought To Be All In For Ukraine Bombing Russia's Diesel Plants

Ukrainian drone ready to blow up diesel distillation plant
After drone strike on atmospheric-vacuum distillation unit
'Thank you, Donald, for removing the oil sanctions but you must stop Zelensky bombing us'.

Donald Trump is attempting to provide aid and comfort to a mortal enemy of the United States in defiance of the law as passed by Congress expressing the will of the American people. The Congress damn well better make him stop and do what they have directed him to do by law. If he refuses, they need to remove him from office.- WaPo comment

I don't know what dirt Valdimir Putin has on President Donald J Corruption but it must be horrible!!! Makes me grin ear to ear! 😁 And I like seeing Donald Trump upset while bowing down on his knees to Vladimir Putin! He is the worst President in my lifetime and I am 72 years old! WaPo comment

Leave it to DJT to try and put his “little fingers” on the scale to try and benefit Putin; The Only question is ? What does Putin have over D J T  I Stand with Ukraine - WaPo comment

Ukraine needs to knock out ALL of Russia's oil refining capacity. When the Russian economy goes down, the Russian military will collapse, then Putin will end up in a spider hole like Saddam and the vengeful Russian people will hunt him down. FSB archives will be opened up and Trump's treason will have nowhere to hide.- WaPo comment

“The faster all the Russian refineries and ability to sell energy will be blown to smithereens the better, because Russia is funding the war with that,”

-          Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia, The Financial Times

Yesterday we learned, e.g.

How Ukraine uses precision drone strikes to hobble Russian oil refineries - Washington Post

Ukraine has been targeting critical components of Russia’s oil industry that are hard to repair. The strikes have crippled Russia’s diesel production and aroused the ire of the American Traitor leader eager to make nice with Putin to buy his diesel to help stave off Americans hit in their pocketbooks. But making deals with Ukraine’s enemy (as well as Europe’s) is what a traitor does.

This was after the orange traitor stunned the world Friday announcing that the U.S. would immediately lift sanctions on Moscow and start buying Russian diesel. (All this after railing against American "communists".) Trump claimed Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter.” And: "Russia will deliver an additional 3 million tons within a short period of time”.

But most energy experts believe this cynical, self -serving move won't make a dime's worth of difference in the short term - meaning to the end of the year. Apart from which we damned well know this move merely rewards Putin and funds his war. Yet the reactionary media (like the WSJ and FOX) still doesn't believe we have a Russian Asset occupying the Oval Office.

Besides, only a goddamned traitor would spout that Ukraine is responsible for driving up diesel and oil prices when the traitor himself launched the war against Iran that incited Iranians to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. Directly leading to the spike in oil, diesel as well as fertilizer prices not to mention the cost in lives.

Thus,  American allies abroad underscored their support for Zelensky to go ahead and keep bombing the Russkie diesel supplies – and ‘devil take the devils. (The U.S traitor and his bosom buddy Putin). The leaders of the European Union, France, Britain, Poland, Finland and Norway spoke by telephone with Zelensky over the weekend to emphasize their backing for him and for Ukraine in continuing its fight against Russia. Let Trump scream and threaten all he wants.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote in a post on X following a call with Zelensky on Sunday.

“I am absolutely certain that nothing and no one will break Ukraine and its President in their fight against Russian aggression,”

You’ve got it because Zelensky and Ukraine are on the right side of this conflict, Trump and Putin in the wrong. So we need Ukraine to keep on bombing the Russian diesel distillation plants, preferably crippling any U.S. chance of making much use of them. Most of us don’t want momentary and minuscule benefits wrought at the hands of American traitors- presidents or not.

Responding to Trump’s call for his ouster, Zelensky said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday that it was up to the Ukrainian people to choose a leader. But he ought to have added that the U.S. Congress should conduct a lawful ouster of Trump via the 25th amendment – or impeachment for his lawlessness and violations of the Constitution.

Thom Tillis (R, NC), meanwhile, said on the NBC’s  Meet the Press:

“I get it that he may be frustrated, but he needs to understand who the good guys are in this disagreement and who the bad guys are, and it’s not even close.”

Noting “that tens of thousands of people have died over this [Russia’s] illegal invasion.”

Let’s be clear here  that Trump’s waiver of Russian sanctions effectively aligns Washington with Moscow and against the bombing Kyiv has carried out against Russian energy infrastructure. Those targeted strikes have damaged Russia’s energy industry, wiping out one percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer correctly accused Trump of “doing a deal with the devil” to “help his flailing political fortunes.”

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, slammed the deal as providing Moscow with “more revenues to wage war.”

Of course, Trump’s attacks on Zelensky were welcomed in Moscow, with Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev calling it “iconic and historic.”

Yeah, “iconic and historic” that an American President could surrender to a Russian dictator’s will- but of course that same dictator helped Trump get into office in 2016. As former MI6 spy Christopher Steele wrote in his recent book, Unredacted' :

"It is sometimes easy to forget that Putin helped Trump to become President before, in 2016, as the report by special counsel Robert Mueller made clear."

Adding (p. 125):

"Fusion GPS had unearthed numerous connections between Trump and Russia, including his links with alleged Russian organized crime figures - also that Trump had made many trips to Russia starting in the Soviet era."

Supporting this were literally troves of substantiated material which the Right typically has ignored in Mueller's (2019) Report:.

www.justice.gov/storage/report.pdf

Including the indictments of 12 Russian (GRU) agents.

[Read the indictment here.]

Steele Dossier a fake? Think again! As shown in the comprehensive Dossier - The Moscow Project  it is as real as a heart attack. We know Trump stayed overnight at the Moscow Ritz Carlton in 2013 – where the Kompromat pee tape was made, e.g.

James Carville: There Is A Pee Tape

Further, three experienced Guardian UK journalists (Luke Harding, Julian Borger, Dan Sabbah) reported:

“The existence of a leaked Kremlin document describing the meeting of the Russian National Security Council in January, 2016 at which Vladimir Putin ‘authorizes a secret spy operation to support a ‘mentally unstable Donald Trump’ in the 2016 presidential election.”

Thankfully, four Republican senators and two Democratic senators have signed onto the statement released yesterday in protesting this abhorrent deal. They said the administration failed to consult with Congress or submit any explanation to justify its decision as required by statute.

The Republican senators who signed onto the statement included Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Curtis of Utah. The Democratic senators were Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

“The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The Administration must immediately reverse course,”

But Trump's desperation to appease his MAGA base and get them cheaper gas and diesel before Nov. 3 is all-encompassing. His  Russkie handlers are keenly aware of his desperation so they know they have him by the balls. Warning from U.S. Senators be damned, the Dotard handlers know their asset will keep doing their bidding and giving Putin all he wants as a Russian asset. Believe it. And believe we have a president who is basically a Manchurian candidate doing the will of an enemy power - with no chance to stop him unless the Dems get control of congress- House AND Senate.

Bottom line takeaway: Traitor Trump is willing to sacrifice Ukrainian and European security to grab some momentary headlines, i.e. that diesel prices might come down (despite the fact they won't). While appeasing his Russian master and showing he's not ready to have the pee tape released.  At least not before the FBI 302's (7 pages that should have been in the Epstein files.) showing he had sex with an underage girl, e,g.

If President Trump does not understand what will happen to him if he proceeds with his plan to trade away support for Ukraine’s democracy for Russian diesel, let me spell it out: He will enter the history books in the chapter on leaders who sold out their country’s democratic values to appease a dictator.

Donald Trump, meet Neville Chamberlain. When future students search online for “sellout,” “appeaser” or “traitor to his country’s core values,” their two pictures will come up first, side by side. And deservedly so.

I have never believed that Trump was somehow an agent of Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin, or in his pay. It is much worse. He simply does not cherish democracy. He cherishes money. And he has no problem selling out the first for the second.

Is Putin running America through Trump, is Trump just a “useful idiot” for the Russians, or is he the worst traitor America’s seen since the days of Benedict Arnold?

Yesterday morning, Trump took to his Nazi-infested social media site to announce to the world (and a bit earlier to people who give him $100,000 a month for market-moving information) that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” telling the world “Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy responded that the deal was “news for me,” and the Kremlin spokesman said three days earlier that Russia wasn’t interested in any sort of a limited truce like Trump announced. But Trump made an identical announcement back in September, which was also a lie, and the night of his announcement both countries continued to bomb each other’s refineries and power plants.

After Russian Diesel Deal, Trump Faces New Crisis Over Ukraine - The New York Times

Excerpt:

To the Ukrainians and their European supporters, the attacks on Russia’s fuel refineries are Kyiv’s most effective way to respond to Russia’s bombardment of Ukraine’s energy grid. Ukraine is prepared to stop attacking energy infrastructure, Mr. Zelensky has said, if Russia does the same.

Russia has refused such a deal. Nevertheless, to Mr. Trump, Ukraine’s attacks are an affront to a U.S. administration that has continued to provide intelligence and some military support to Ukraine despite the American president’s harsh words about Mr. Zelensky. Diesel prices in particular have become a sore spot for Mr. Trump, causing farmers’ costs to spike just as harvest season arrives and the midterms are weeks away.

“He better damn well stop,” Mr. Trump told reporters on Saturday, referring to Mr. Zelensky and Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries, and ignoring Russia’s strikes on the Ukrainian energy grid. “He wants to make problems for the world. He wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers.”

Export statistics indicate that the increase in diesel and energy prices stems largely from Mr. Trump’s war with Iran, though Ukraine’s attacks on Russia have also played a role.

Zelensky Says Ukraine Will Resume Russian Refinery Strikes, Defying Trump - The New York Times

Excerpt:

President Zelensky’s anger with the Trump administration burst into view on Thursday when he said he would no longer abide by President Trump’s demand to stop striking Russian oil refineries. It was a remarkably vocal expression by the Ukrainian leader of frustration with the United States, as Kyiv grapples with what it sees as a betrayal by Washington.

Mr. Zelensky’s remarks, in an interview with The Financial Times published on Thursday, brought to a head days of mounting tensions with the Trump administration. It drew expressions of support from European allies in Brussels, but could be a risky move for a country that has depended heavily on U.S. support.

In the interview, Mr. Zelensky appeared baffled by Mr. Trump’s decisions, criticizing him for making deals with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, and for openly admiring dictators who have clung to power. Mr. Putin, the Ukrainian leader said, is “real evil.”

“How can Trump be friends with him?” Mr. Zelensky added.

Mr. Zelensky now appears to have had enough.

“That’s it. The block is out,” Mr. Zelensky said when asked by The Financial Times how much longer Ukraine would maintain the pause on targeting refineries. He did not say what had tipped his decision or when the strikes would resume.
