Kamala Harris Nails It In CNN Town Hall - Emphasizing Election Priorities Amidst Some Ridiculous Questions

Kamala underscores Trump's fascism in CNN Town Hall

"It is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States than Donald Trump. He has proved himself morally unfit for an office that asks its occupant to put the good of the nation above self-interest. He has proved himself temperamentally unfit for a role that requires the very qualities — wisdom, honesty, empathy, courage, restraint, humility, discipline — that he most lacks.

Those disqualifying characteristics are compounded by everything else that limits his ability to fulfill the duties of the president: his many criminal charges, his advancing age, his fundamental lack of interest in policy and his increasingly bizarre cast of associates.

This unequivocal, dispiriting truth — Donald Trump is not fit to be president — should be enough for any voter who cares about the health of our country and the stability of our democracy to deny him re-election.

For this reason, regardless of any political disagreements voters might have with her, Kamala Harris is the only patriotic choice for president.

Most presidential elections are, at their core, about two different visions of America that emerge from competing policies and principles. This one is about something more foundational. It is about whether we invite into the highest office in the land a man who has revealed, unmistakably, that he will degrade the values, defy the norms and dismantle the institutions that have made our country strong."-   NY Times Endorsement of Kamala Harris

"Something is wrong with this split-screen picture. On one side, former president Donald Trump rants about mass deportations and claims to have stopped “wars with France,” after being described by his longest-serving White House chief of staff as a literal fascist. On the other side, commentators debate whether Vice President Kamala Harris performed well enough at a CNN town hall to “close the deal.....Let’s review: First, Harris was criticized for not doing enough interviews — so she did multiple interviews, including with nontraditional media. She was criticized for not doing hostile interviews — so she went toe to toe with Bret Baier of Fox News. She was criticized as being comfortable only at scripted rallies — so she did unscripted events, such as the town hall on Wednesday. Along the way, she wiped the floor with Trump during their one televised debate.

Trump, meanwhile, stands before his MAGA crowds and spews nonstop lies, ominous threats, impossible promises and utter gibberish. His rhetoric is dismissed, or looked past, without first being interrogated.”- Eugene Robinson, Washington Post, ' The double standard for Harris and Trump has reached a breaking point'

Last night Kamala Harris attended a CNN Town Hall with undecided voters in Pennsylvania that captivated us from beginning to the end. Meanwhile, her opponent Donald Trump held a rally in Georgia after rejecting an offer to participate in the town hall.   Why?, these undecideds should be asking themselves, did their presumed alternate choice for President dodge the chance to take on their questions?  Why indeed, did too many seem to make more of Kamala either changing her past positions, or fretting over how immigrants would be handled with taxpayer money, or how much their grocery bills would come down under her plans.

Or even given over to some outlandish questions, i.e. 'How can you ensure that not one more Palestinian is killed in Gaza?'  or: "Give me one single policy position above all that you would favor getting done?" - unaware any and all positions are in congress' hands, not Kamala's.

All missing the point that their transient worries are neither here nor there when the choice is between decency, moral character and the narcissistic whims of a madman who’s vowed to ‘burn the Constitution’ on getting in power again – and who wants “generals like Hitler had.”

As Ms. Harris bluntly put it:

“The bottom line is this: We know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power. The question in 13 days will be: What do the American people want?”

What do they want indeed? Another Trump reign which may never end this time around?  Retribution run amok  directed at his “enemies within”?  Mass deportations of all immigrants under military force and using detention camps? Use of military (in violation of Posse Comitatus Act) to fire freely at protesters he doesn’t like?  Tariffs to help with inflation? Don’t make me laugh on that one!

This is why at the Town Hall it was heartening to see Harris repeatedly returning to the news that Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly claimed his one-time boss “falls into the general definition of fascist”. Harris herself- in reply to Anderson Cooper putting her on the spot - then called Trump a fascist when asked if she believed the ex-president qualifies as one during the same Town Hall. Speaking from her residence earlier in the day, in Washington DC,  Harris accused Trump of seeking to subvert the independence of the military.

These are the core issues all voters should be worried about, not how fast to lower their grocery bills, or whether Kamala will still build a part of the wall, or what she will do about protecting Palestinians in Gaza. NONE of that matters if Trump is voted back in because all the problems occurring now will be rendered a hundred times worse.  Gaza?  Trump will help ensure fellow autocrat Bibi Netanyahu’s plan to occupy the Gaza strip and kick all the remaining Palestinians out. Grocery bills? They will shoot through the roof after he imposes his 20% tariffs across the board.

Discussing voters concerned about the war in Gaza, the vice president said:

“I also do know that for many people who care about this issue, they also care about bringing down the price of groceries. They also care about our democracy and not having a president of the United States who admires dictators and is a fascist.”

In fact, they should care first and foremost about that and not whether the price of eggs is going up.

Harris’s comments came a day after a statement by Trump’s former White House chief of staff John F. Kelly that Trump meets the definition of a fascist.  This had been openly voiced in a Times interview, e.g.

John Kelly says Donald Trump meets the definition of a 'fascist'

Among other remarks - including Trump dissing American soldiers  who were killed in WW I at Belleau Wood as "losers". Kelly's openly voiced exposure of Trump basically scuttled the question of whether he has authoritarian tendencies and would abuse governmental power in a second term. Of course he would, and only a confirmed dummy or total ignoramus would make a bet with his vote (including voting 3rd party) that he wouldn't. Kelly, a retired Marine general, told the New York Times  Michael Schmidt that Trump’s desire for unfettered power and other qualities fit the fascist label.

The cascade of alarms from a host of former Trump administration officials has created the unprecedented spectacle.  That is, we now behold a series of high-ranking military leaders -  who by tradition are nonpolitical -  warning voters that a major presidential nominee is a potential dictator, underlining that message with a label that has traditionally been reserved for such figures as Italy’s Benito Mussolini rather than American political leaders.

Kelly’s warning has given Harris new ammunition for her assertion that Trump cannot be trusted with the powers of the presidency, and it has ensured that the question of Trump’s purported dictatorial character would be at the center of the campaign’s final days.

Harris in a watershed moment at the Town Hall basically cut through all the minor distractions of lesser issues to point out, in respect of Kelly's interview".

“He’s just putting out a 911 call to the American people. Understand what could happen if Donald Trump were back in the White House. And this time we must take very seriously [that] those folks who knew him best and who were career people are not going to be there to hold him back.”

My bet now is that Kelly's warning represents a kind of October surprise which I am betting sees Kamala roll in on a tsunami in 2 weeks. Nate Silver, put your computer and "gut instincts" (about a Trump win) away and take note!

Donald Trump hopes he can confuse people about Vice President Kamala Harris's intelligence through sheer force of racism and repetition. "She’s lazy as hell," the GOP candidate said during a fundraiser held at his own golf resort in Florida. Trump, who has canceled multiple interviews outside of his own home, due to "exhaustion," falsely claimed Harris has a "reputation" and accused her of being "on drugs." The Associated Press classified this as part of the "overtly racist rhetoric" that has been "fixtures of Trump’s public life." Ironically, the reliance on silly racist stereotypes is a sign of Trump's own laziness, as he can't be bothered to come up with something more original.

He's also been using one of his most tired insults for Black people and women: "low IQ," which is rooted in his lifelong obsession with the racist pseudo-science of eugenics. As he becomes even more disinhibited with age, Trump has been less capable of wrapping these white supremacist views in terms of plausible deniability, instead raving about his utterly false belief that people from non-European nations have "bad genes."

Before Donald Trump was considered nothing more than a circus sideshow, some of us noted during the 2015 GOP presidential primaries that his rhetoric and agenda bore all the hallmarks of the "f" word: fascism. Historian Rick Perlstein wrestled with it as early as September of that year. I wrote about it just a couple of months later. At the time, Trump was extolling the virtues of torture, talking about a massive surveillance program to be used against American Muslims and promising to send Syrian refugees, including children, back to their war-torn country. He hadn't yet declared his intention to ban all Muslims from coming to the U.S. but it was easy to see the writing on the wall. It was also very easy to see that fascism was on the menu in the United States of America if Trump won the election.

That was nine years ago and a zillions of words have since been written about Trump's dishonesty, corruption, unfitness and authoritarian philosophy. We've learned over the years, through many reports, memoirs and tell-all books that Trump tried to govern in a dictatorial fashion at every turn but was either too mentally undisciplined to follow through or was held back by people around him who kept him from acting on his worst impulses.

A new bombshell report describes how, during his first administration, former President Donald Trump longed for the same kind of absolute dictatorial power that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler enjoyed.

In a Tuesday report, Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg wrote about his conversations with General John Kelly (Trump's former Department of Homeland Security secretary and ex-White House chief of staff) who described how Trump harbored a peculiarly disdain for the military. He specifically lamented that he lacked the same kind of unwavering support from American military leadership that Hitler had during his reign.

"I need the kind of generals that Hitler had," Trump said, according to unnamed White House aides speaking confidentially to the Atlantic. "People who were totally loyal to him, that follow orders."

America’s morbidly rich billionaires are at it again, this time screwing the average family’s ability to have decent, affordable housing in their never-ending quest for more, more, more. Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Denmark have had enough and done something about it: we should, too.

There are a few things that are essential to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” that should never be purely left to the marketplace; these are the most important sectors where government intervention, regulation, and even subsidy are not just appropriate but essential. Housing is at the top of that list.

A few days ago I noted how, since the Reagan Revolution, the cost of housing has exploded in America, relative to working class income.

When my dad bought his home in the 1950s, for example, the median price of a single-family house was around 2.2 times the median American family income. Today the St. Louis Fed says the median house sells for $417,700 while the median American income is $40,480—a ratio of more than 10 to 1 between housing costs and annual income.

Three Major Myths That Undermine Social Security - And Why They Are Wrong

Myths about Social Security and how it works have been spread almost from the time it commenced under FDR nearly 90 years ago. As with other forms of misinformation and rumors there's little that can be done to completely snuff them, but they can be exposed especially after promoted for a significant time.  In that regard I want to examine the three major myths about the program that seem to have had the longest 'half-lives'.

1) Social Security is "going broke":

One need only check the mainstream media from time to time to see the extent to which this myth is alive and well. Doing so, one will encounter headlines such as 'Social Security is running out of money - what to do?' and "How soon will Social Security be bankrupted?'

Well, the hard fact is that Social Security is not "going broke" or going "bankrupt".  The system can't go bankrupt because it has no creditors. The government? Hell, it's the one managing the system.  Outside creditors or banks? Nope, Social Security has none given it depends entirely on a self-contained stream of revenue from workers' payroll contributions.   As for "going broke", the only feasible way that could happen is if we had 100% unemployment with no one paying into the system.  That has never happened in the history of the program and never will, even if Trump should somehow get voted back in by too many dummies who believe he's an economic genius.

2) Social Security contributes to the federal debt.

Politicos and fiscal hawks on the Right love to tag Social Security (along with the defense establishment) as the biggest generators of red ink. Some even insist Social Security is the 'number one driver of debt'.  Clearly these yokels need an education as the opposite is true.  Since the system is self-financed by workers' payroll contributions it isn't drawing down federal revenue. Indeed, it is other federal agencies - including the Pentagon- which have drawn down on Social Security's Trust fund. (One reason Al Gore often proposed a "lockbox" when he ran for president in 2000 against Bush Jr.)

Further, the program is not legally allowed to borrow money from any other federal agency so no debt is created. The true fact is Social Security is actually one of the biggest creditors given all the special Treasury notes it holds, from having its revenue shared with other agencies.

Want to know what's the biggest source of debt up to now?  It was the GOP-Trump tax cuts of 2017 which propelled debt to historic levels.

3) Politicians are stealing from Social Security:

This stems from a misunderstanding of the nature of Social Security financing and the fact its funds can also be used for general revenues.  Thus, given the government can use the money in the Trust Funds (which are a special form of Treasury bonds) for everything from F-35 jet fighters to Meals on Wheels to federal cancer research, some people think the money is being misallocated or 'pilfered'.  No it is not, it's merely being borrowed, but the money must be repaid in a fixed timeline.

Bonds purchased by private citizens, companies etc. work basically the same way but no one accuses the parties or lawmakers of 'stealing'.  Clearly, what is needed is a lot more education on Social Security and how it works. The bottom line is even if the Trust Fund monies are depleted (as predicted, if congress does nada) by 2035, the program will still be able to pay out 83% of scheduled benefits.

Cue The Sane-Washing (& Psychobabble): Trump's Not Really Demented He's Just Experiencing A 'Flow State'

Delirious Trump sways for 39 minutes at Penn. Town Hall

FT's Jemima Kelly claims Trump was in a 'flow state'

The depths to which the mainstream media will go to sane-wash Trump are simply mind boggling. First, less than two months ago the media latched onto Trump's own invention of "the weave" to try to rationalize his often-babbling rhetoric and incoherence - most glaringly revealed in his monologue about sharks, boats and electric batteries, i.e.

Now they’ll say all these stories are terrible. Well, these stories have, you know, you heard my story in the boat with the shark, right? I got killed on that. They thought I was rambling. I’m not rambling. …

“We can’t get the boat to float. The battery is so heavy. So then I start talking about asking questions. You know, I have an, I had an uncle who was a great professor at MIT for many years, long, I think the longest tenure ever. Very smart, had three different degrees and, you know, so I have an aptitude for things. You know, there is such a thing as an aptitude.

“I said, ‘Well, what would happen if this boat is so heavy and started to sink and you’re on the top of the boat. Do you get electrocuted or not?’ In other words, the boat is going down and you’re on the top, will the electric currents flow through the water and wipe you out?

“And let’s say there’s a shark about 10 yards over there. Would I have to immediately abandon, or could I ride the electric down? And he said, ‘Sir, nobody’s ever asked us that question. But sir, I don’t know.’ I said, ‘Well, I want to know, because I guarantee you one thing, I don’t care what happens. I’m staying with the electric, I’m not getting over with it.’

“So I tell that story. And the fake news they go, ‘he told this crazy story with electric.’ It’s actually not crazy. It’s sort of a smart story, right? Sort of like, you know, it’s like the snake, it’s a smart when you, you figure what you’re leaving in, right? You’re bringing it in the, you know, the snake, right? The snake and the snake. I tell that and they do the same thing.”

Seriously, can any one of my blog readers make sense out of this verbal monkey feces?  I know I can't. Or will people be duped by Trump apologists who insist he's doing a novel form of communication called "the weave"?

But as both Lawrence O'Donnell and Chris Hayes have noted, trying to dress up bunkum and balderdash doesn't change its nature. Plus, the fact Trump continues to go off the rails rather confirms he's lost most of his marbles. Think of it! If Biden was still running for president and babbling like Trump, every nattering nabob would be calling for him to resign or be removed under the 25th amendment. But not Trump! He is simply engaging in a newfangled form of discursive discourse called the "weave".  It's up to you lunkheads in the press to figure out the meaning.

The most recent sign of Trump's unhinged nature and wacko brain - apart from him babbling about Arnold Palmer's 'schlong' in the shower (on Saturday - e.g.

Trump makes vulgar comments about Arnold Palmer at Pennsylvania rally - CBS News

Was last week's Town Hall in Pennsylvania when he stopped answering questions and had his handlers turn on his playlist over a loudspeaker whereupon he swayed like a looneytune for the better part of 39 minutes,

Trump sways and bops to music for 39 minutes in bizarre town hall episode - The Washington Post

No one who watched this pathetic scene could be fooled. I certainly wasn't and neither was Janice.  He looked like an Alzheimer's patient who had lost track of time and place - as well as why he was there in the first place. Are we being disingenuous, cruel, unreasonable?  I present here some of the comments which followed the WaPo piece for the link above:

It is obvious that the felon-rapist has Alzheimers. BTW, he was swaying, not "dancing" or bopping" (which sounds possibly normal) as he zoned out to his favorite, familiar music for 39 minutes to comfort and soothe himself. How is it that no one on your staff recognizes that this "bizarre" behavior is completely normal for those who have Alzheimers and are unable to cope in the moment. His medical records no doubt paint a picture of an old, obese, exhausted, and senile man in accelerating decline, and that's why his handlers will not release them.
----
I know my family loves me because I’m 74 and if I behaved like that they would either care for me and comfort me at home or find me a dementia care facility and visit often. Where the hell is his family!?
----
The man is sick, unhinged. Imagine if Biden had done that? Kamala Harris? Why is it that this man gets away with stunningly deviant behavior with a coterie of enablers who are barely even embarrassed? This borders on insanity! Oh heavens, please spare us from this madness! Have mercy on us!
-----
Snapped and completely unraveled. Gone around the bend. The last two brain cells have finally killed each other.
------

But lo and behold there is Jemima Kelly of The Financial Times who in her Sunday column ('The Power and Peril of Trump's Flow State') is prepared to confer the benediction of sanity on the orange Turd,  According to Jemima, who claims she "lost her father" to dementia some years ago, nothing Trump did at the Town Hall seemed out of place, demented or odd. Making me wonder what parallel Earth she inhabits. In her words:

"The Truth is Trump was utterly in the zone. He was displaying how comfortable, relaxed and confident he was feeling.  This was, after all, a town hall that felt more like a rally for the Republican candidate.  He wasn't being 'senile' he was just in his flow state."

Wowser, Jemima! I really wish Janice and I could have employed that one to spare her cousin Desmond from being institutionalized back in 2010 when he was found doing a limbo by himself naked on a Bim beach.

Desmond - was a successful accountant before Alzheimer's

But neither he or we were able to invoke the "self-referential activity which occurs when our alpha brain waves are increased as in a meditative state."

And who invented this hooey?  Well, according to our esteemed FT columnist, none other than Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who discovered that "in a state of flow  activity reduces in the prefrontal cortex  of the brain" and a person can be so involved in an activity that "nothing else seems to matter."  Well, yeah, guess that could have applied to Desmond doing a limbo underneath an invisible tree on Accra Beach.

Jemima, aware (as she should be) of readers' potential reaction to her psycho-babble, advises that "if you have the patience you ought to watch the town hall in its entirety."

If we do that, she assures us:

"You will get a very different impression from many of the news reports."

Pardon me, Jemima, but I will pass. After Saturday's riffing on Arnold Palmer's 'johnson' and tearing into Kamala, I maintain he's an unhinged fruitcake who has no business being near any missile codes. Or near the Resolute Desk where Executive orders are signed!

But she insists that claiming Trump is suffering from dementia is "either disingenuous or wishful thinking."

Nope, she informs us.

"  Trump is a bizarre politician but that is a huge part of his appeal."

Adding:

"The idea that he is losing the plot doesn't seem to be persuading undecided voters."

Well, if they are still undecided after all Trump has said and done the past week then perhaps they themselves are also trapped in his psychotic fever dream.  And if so they have no business going near a polling place, period.

What is Jemima's advice to Dems:

"For Democrats trying to beat Trump the best advice is to work on their own still unpolished flow states."

In other words, don't call out his insanity any more, including his references to Arnie Palmer's dong and calling Kamala a "shit vice president".  Instead develop your "vibes" thereby to also appear as looney as Dotard.

And so, by 'leveling the landscape of the sane', assist more voters in the process of normalizing Trump's aberrational behavior. Sorry, I will pass as I trust Kamala and the Democrats will as well.

To quote one WaPo commenter: "Lunatics will always see another lunatic as normal".

Makes sense to me!

Donald Trump, during a Sunday interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo, floated the idea that the National Guard will take control of polling sites on Election Day.

"Let's remember you've got 50,000 Chinese nationals in the last couple of years. There are people on the terrorist watch list — 350 in the last couple of years. Like you said, 13,000 murderers, and 15,000 rapists," Bartiromo said, asking the former president, "What are you expecting? Joe Biden said he doesn't think it's going to be a peaceful Election Day."

Trump replied, "He doesn't know what's happening. I think the bigger problem is the enemy from within ... sick people, radical left lunatics. And it should be easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military."

A slew of political experts and journalist immediately sounded the alarm.

Friends,

On Saturday, Trump opened his speech at the airport in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, with 12 minutes of reminiscences about the golfer Arnold Palmer, who grew up in Latrobe and for whom its airport is named.

As The New York Times reported, “His monologue culminated in lewd remarks about the size of Mr. Palmer’s penis.”

What historians may term Trump’s “penis speech” — the climax, as it were, of his final days seeking the votes of Americans to put him back in the Oval Office — was actually far more revealing about Trump than were his “lewd remarks.”

Trump began his 12-minute encomium by extolling Palmer’s talent and physical prowess. “He had no money, just had a lot of talent and a lot of muscle — he was a strong guy.”

For a convicted criminal and violence-pushing fascist to escape disqualification — that is the elevation of the wrong “enemy within.”

Ponder all that no longer matter to the MAGA crowd – law, order, fair elections, election fraud, respect for others, civility, empathy, procreative rights, peaceful transfer of power, double impeachments, Congressional authority, bipartisanship, blackmail of top state voter counters, blackmail of the Ukrainian president, endorsing enemy tyrants and dictatorship, backing white supremacists, rank incompetence during a once-a-century health emergency, malicious demonization of opponents, and even the glimmer of truth-telling. Whew! Oh yeah, personally inciting an armed, violent crowd to attack the Capitol and overturn a legitimate election. Oh yeah II: overtly threatening the life of the dutiful, sitting VP. Oh yeah III, threatening the illegal outrage of ordering the U.S. military to quell dissent or punish political opposition.

Even after Trump loses, the contagion of Trumpism represents multiple, malignant cancers that must be excoriated and amputated if our body politic wants to restore civic health. It’s not only the perverse inversion of rock-bottom American values but pulling morality inside out, then reveling in cruelty that demands ultimate power (thanks. Supreme Court). Say what? Say what? By what moral legacy can we justify elevating a true "enemy within" to the national CEO role – whose first and last task is to enforce obedience to law?

My eldest daughter is a Libra. People born under that astrological sign are said to have a very hard time making up their minds. I’ve seen that tendency in play when I’ve gone shopping with her. It could be excruciating watching her try to make up her mind at places that sold gelato, pastry, or identical blouses or tops that came in an array of colors. She seems to like the process of deciding, but to her dad, it looks like self-torture. It can require patience, but I love her, so it’s easy.

Being with her is the point. It's good to be with her; I made up my mind about that the first time I laid eyes on her. It wasn't even impulsive. It was damn near instantaneous, and it proved to be very good judgment on my part. Despite being a Libra, that woman I so often found myself shopping with made up her mind about Donald Trump a long time ago, nor did it did take any persuasion from me for her to know what should have been plain for most anyone who had even a mini-mind that needed making up. When it comes to important things, my daughter has almost unerringly good judgment. The fact that she's smart helps, but she also has good instincts.

So, though I can be patient with her in a boutique or an ice cream parlor, I have not an ort or a morsel of patience for the ninnies who remain undecided in this upcoming election, people who apparently can’t tell their asses from a hole in the ground, shit from shinola, up from down, wet from dry, right from wrong, stupid from smart, haute cuisine from Mickey D's, good from bad, blue from red, or the devil they know from the guy with love and hate tattoos on opposite hands and a prominent gold tooth in the center of his smirking face.

And, quite frankly, these people who haven’t been able to make up their minds since Trump boasted about grabbing the crotches of women to whom he hadn’t been introduced or being powerless to resist kissing ladies he found attractive at first glance are seriously lacking in basic discriminatory skills.
