Barton Swaim's Message To Twitter Users: "Delete Your Account"

Image result for brane space, smart phones
It now appears WSJ columnist Barton Swaim has some savvy advice for social media junkies, specifically to do with Twitter:

For Sanity's Sake, Delete Your Account - WSJ

He writes:

"One Saturday morning last fall, I sat down at my desk and deleted my Twitter account.I did it for a variety of reasons. Privacy, for one: The thought of people unknown to me prowling around my account made me uneasy. It was also a distraction. Most Twitter regulars will confess to wasting hours following the idiotic spats and tirades for which the medium has become famous."
Swaim adds (ibid.):-

"If you follow more than a small number of accounts, you're likely to find, in addition to some fine wit and the occasional useful link, an immense quantity of material that's by turns obtuse, absurd, mean and mendacious."

Adding:

"You'll look further into the exchanges in which they occur, and after a short time you will have considered a vast arrays of vicious, defamatory and inane utterances."

Most enlightening:

"Complaints that too many people are publishing their ill-formed thoughts are not new. In 1802 the Scottish critic Francis Jeffrey groused in the Edinburgh Review that ' hairdressers, and valets write amatory verses; coffehouse waiters publish political pamphlets; and shoemakers and tailors astonish the world with plans for reforming the constitution'.  That sounds hopelessly elitist  in our egalitarian era but Twitter is the ludicrous conclusion of the propensity Jeffrey lamented."

No surprise here. As I pointed out  in an earlier post (Nov. 23,  2017) Twitter is essentially a cartoon language medium by which I mean its 140 character limit basically excludes any potential for complex thought and most facts.  Or, I might add, any basis for proper explication of what one is communicating.  One is basically reduced to the equivalent of a series of language cartoons.  This also hearkens back to the medium used  constituting the basis of the message, as Marshall McLuhan first pointed out in Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man.

Recall one of Trump's most inane, half baked early tweets from 2017  (concerning U.S. nuclear policy) and you see everything wrong with this superficial  medium:

"We need to strengthen and expand nuclear capacity until the world comes to its sense regarding nukes."

What the hell was he yapping about? Expand nuclear capacity? Was he nuts, ignorant or just stupid? As a number of strategic analysts pointed out, including staff from The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the U.S. already has just under 5,000 nuclear warheads in its active arsenal and more than 1,550 deployed strategic warheads. This is more than enough to turn the world to ash about six times over.
Meanwhile the clueless media, especially on TV, kept showing the tweet on large HD screens in bold relief, as they scratched their heads, openly wondering what the hell he meant.

Thus, no surprise the Trump team itself was scurrying to impose some semblance of meaning on the word jumble expelled.  In fact, as a Denver Post release a day later noted, the "Trump team offered only slightly more explanation of the comment later in the day when communications director Jason Miller said Trump was 'referring to the threat of nuclear proliferation and the critical need to prevent it'"
Let's be clear  that no sane person ought to be propounding nuclear policy via a cartoon language medium. The very choice to do so indicates that person lacks all his marbles. I would add that any person who defends such use also must be questioned as to his "lost marbles".

Besides, any medium which allows instantaneous reaction or instant aggression should be prohibited from being used by a president or national security officer to interject or propose nuclear policy or security issues. It can't be otherwise.   The nature of the medium is to cater to impatience and instant brain farts, baseless opinions- often from the minimally educated.  Why? Because it's simply too easy to spout off!   Contrast that with preparing something like a blog post for which at least some semblance of work, effort must be invested.

While it is true blog posts can also be polarizing, because inevitably many will take issue - at least they provide a space and time-extended forum to make coherent points and arguments to support a position. Comments, thoughtful and well reasoned, are also enabled - up to well over 1,000 characters - and provided that certain attributes are met.  Something a 140-280 character tweet simply can't do. Thus, a tweet is more like an infant's scream by comparison. Succinct, loud, abrasive and in your face, or  assaulting your ears. No wonder then tweets have converted so many into brash, over-sized toddlers with anger issues..
Does one really need an I.Q. higher than a hamster's to grasp that tweets  (and most Instagram  texts) are an inappropriate medium for communication, far less making nuclear policy or other national policy.  Must it really be spelled out for Trump and the media that often grovels for attention by posting his every brainless expulsion.?

This is one reason I never seriously considered ever using Twitter and never will.  I don't care if I'm only 1 of a million or even a billion or dismissed as "out of touch" . Popularity of a thing has never been cause to jump on the bandwagon of the moment. Whether that be the 'ice bucket challenge' or the endless posting of daft kitty -punching - doggy YouTube videos.   Oh, that goes for "selfie sticks" too - since I believe the whole concept of selfies is narcissistic and foolish. (Why I was elated on learning Prince Harry chastised an Aussie girl about her wanting to take a selfie with him, advising her to "stick to normal photos,  selfies you don't need!")
But that's the problem today, because too many simply give in to the latest craze,  putting their brains on ice and acting in "monkey see, monkey do" fashion. For example, trying to emulate  characters in the Netflix movie "Bird Box"  - walking with blindfolds on as they crash into walls and barriers- even holding their blindfolded toddlers' hands as they collide too.

Everyone wants to be "on the cutting edge" of the latest tech advance and so barely give a thought to the volume of electronic waste left in their pathetic wake. Or how addictive social media devices are destroying their intellects, engendering millions of tons of brain waste.

Then there is all the mental and emotional  bandwidth waste that sucks up terabytes as people spew forth on any and everything - from the size of a model's lips, to a political speech, to the new Miss America "not looking like a real American",  to the latest crazed buffoonery from Dotard.
Tweets may be cutesy modes of communication for the Millennials and many others but they don't make the cut as genuine writing -  any more than an ape's random paint splashes on a canvas "creates"  a passable work of abstract art.

As for Mr. Swaim, I leave his next to last paragraph  with  readers:

"The instantaneous awareness of so much folly is not, I think, healthy for the human mind. Spending time on Twitter became for me, a deeply demoralizing experience. Often especially when some controversy of national importance provoked large numbers of users into tweeting their opinions about it.  I would come away from Twitter exasperated to the point of madness."

More  reasons for others to also come away from the "madness" and delete their Twitter accounts.  Such a move, while it might seem drastic, is more probably beneficial.  It will clearly  make more room for genuine intellectual participation -  such as reading actual books-   instead  of  polluting one's own mind with gigabytes of bollocks and noise.

Pelosi Merits Kudos For Teaching Man Baby Dotard About Article I Powers Re: State Of Union Speech

Image result for smirkingchimp, Nancy Pelosi with gavel

"The people in this country are now getting a forced lesson on the Article I branch of the Constitution - for which Nancy Pelosi is putting on a clinic. She's wielding her power so thoroughly and efficiently as well as publicly that we normally don't see women do. She's not doing it in the usual demure way women do. And we're so used to weak speakers, we're just not used to it.  So Donald Trump is getting this lesson along with the rest of the country, because he knows nothing about the Constitution.

So for the first time, his infliction of pain on people, his lack of empathy for people is coming  up against another power trying to stop him.  The tragedy is the other half of the Article I power is  apparently just as callous as Donald Trump. I see no more  concern or compassion in Mitch McConnell than I see in Trump."  - Joy Reid, on All In last night.

"The result of this is that the obscuring fog of both-sidesism lying atop this whole situation has been dissipated. What has been laid bare, instead, is a simple reality: Democrats actually do control one chamber of Congress, after having won a major electoral victory, and that actually does give them some veto power over Trump’s conduct and agenda.  Pundits can claim all they want that Pelosi is being “as petty as Trump,” as if this is all just a matter of interpersonal conduct. That objection is now irrelevant: What really matters is that Trump will not deliver the speech. He will not use this ceremony as a platform to browbeat Democrats or to spread gales of disinformation about the shutdown and about the wall fantasies driving it." Greg Sargent -'There Is Only Way To Break Trump's Pathology, Pelosi Has Found It'. Washington Post today

It was the stuff of political high drama as the bombastic con man and criminal in the White House actually dared the Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi- to stop him from giving the State of the Union next Tuesday. Well, Dotard met his match and more when Nancy replied after  Trump wrote:.

“I will be honoring your invitation, and fulfilling my Constitutional duty, to deliver important information to the people and Congress of the United States of America regarding the State of our Union,. I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives.”

Trump, as uninformed on the Constitution as he is everything else, actually believed HE could just sashay into the House and deliver his spiel of lies and braggadocio.  Further he was challenging Pelosi to stop him.  He bluffed like the con man he is (as with all his phony real estate deals) but Nancy called him on it, writing:

“I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened.”

The message was clear as day: She was informing Donnie Dotard there's a new Sheriff in town and she isn't taking any more shit from him, or his sycophants and disciples.  Meanwhile,  the hedge fund-owned, corporate mainstream media (in their cartoons) can make all the fun of her they want,  e.g.
Image result for Pelosi cartoons

But contrary to their Neoliberal ignorance and skewed perceptions, it is actually Pelosi who is now the adult in the room, showing the sentient part of the nation (not including these imbecilic  cartoonists with heads up their asses) that the First Brat will not be unilaterally appeased, or accommodated anymore just because he pitches a hissy fit or bawls about "unfairness".   In other words, checks and balances have at last returned after a 2-year hiatus dominated by Repuke enabling.  That these cartoonists don't grasp that discloses they're really zombie dolts playing into the  Swine-in -chief's hands as his putative bitches.

Janice's take is basically the same as mine but with some added snark, e.g.

"The male cartoonists are just male chauvinist pigs and misogynists like Trump,  terrified of strong, intelligent women leaders. The female cartoonists mocking her- if any- are just slaves to their male captors,  suffering from Stockholm syndrome. They lack brains and courage and ought to be looking up to Nancy as an inspiration instead of playing into the hands of their corporate male bosses!"

 Ouch!

Not long after Ms. Pelosi's missive, Trump conceded the whole charade, saying he would use an “alternative" method of delivering his address and that it wouldn’t be in the Capitol. In a word, He caved and admitted his bluff got called - big time.  But instead of manning up he reverted to his two year old diaper -soiling self, bawling out:

“The State of the Union has been cancelled by Nancy Pelosi, because she doesn’t want to hear the truth,"

Actually, Dotard, she didn't want to hear your shit-faced lies on a grand public stage and was reminding you who else has power in the Beltway now.   And again, there's that education aspect that too many media pundits and scribes (as well as brain -dead cartoonists)  forget when they blab about "both sides" tossing tantrums or draw cartoons mocking Pelosi..  The past two years'  exposure to the brat- in- chief  &  Twitter Troll has doubtless taken its toll on most citizens' minds and emotions, I admit.   But that's no reason for the rest of us to cede ground to the Trumpers or to forget  that Nancy is the now the strict mom prepared to call 'time out' on the orange- hued man baby.  And even deliver the occasional lash or two on the backside,  if needed.  Besides she has every right.

Legally speaking, Trump has no right whatsoever to deliver the SOTU in the House chamber. The Constitution only stipulates that a president must provide an update on the state of the country. This used to be done in writing.  This was also an option Pelosi helpfully suggested in her letter to Trump last week, though she had to know that apart from signing his scrawling name he doesn't know how to write. Hell, he can't read.

It is true that Congress can provide the venue and has for more than 100 years, but it is not a gimme. It must be done through a joint resolution.

Basically, Pelosi made Trump eat shit...errrr...humble pie. She  has also shown she has steel cojones and won’t back down from a fight.  In other words, she's shown what a strong female leader can do,  especially one who isn't prepared to kowtow to male fantasies of domination.

We look forward to many more of Nancy's showdowns with Trump  and his getting his fat orange heinie handed to him . At least until we get rid of him permanently-  probably in the 2020 election.

Selected Questions -Answers From All Experts Astronomy Forum (Variable Star Observing)

Question:  I understand that variable stars play a big part of amateur astronomy and offer a way for amateurs to do research. Could you explain the different types and  and give some of the basic  techniques for observing ?  Mitch  B.. Pueblo, CO

Answer:

It is true that observing variable stars and recording their light changes remains one of the primary ways amateurs can contribute to astronomy.  First some preliminaries. As the name suggests variable stars change their brightness over defined periods of time.    One can generally divide variable stars into 1) geometrical variables, and 2) pulsating variables.

The geometrical variables are stars which vary in brightness owing to changes in their geometric configuration, say with respect to another star that is part of the physical system. An example wold be an  eclipsing binary with two stars revolving around a common center of mass (barycenter) such that the regular eclipse of one by the other produces light intensity changes.  The sketch below shows the basic binary system:

.
With larger star of mass m(A) revolving about a barycenter with a star of lesser mass m(B). Here, the two stars are separated by a"  seconds of arc.

Now instead of such a plane view imagine the smaller star B regularly passing in front of star A (or vice versa) in the line of sight for an Earth observer. Then the resulting light curve of the system will show fluctuations.

An excellent animation showing what happens - including the corresponding light resulting can be found at this NASA site:

Note carefully where each of the eclipse points (dips in light intensity) occur and what is happening in the binary system. Perhaps the classic prototype and certainly one of the most beloved eclipsing variables is Algol, the "Demon star" for which a nice animation can be seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj0hcA..

The other type of variable star - the pulsating variables - have as their prototype Mira  (Omicron Ceti) in the constellation Cetus, the Whale.  This pulsating star lies 420 light years from us and varies over a period of 11 months.  Mira is peculiar in its variations because they aren't constant, i.e. the peaks aren't always the same brightness. For example, over the centuries Mira has attained a peak magnitude of nearly +2.0 or almost as bright as Polaris, the North star.  But in recent years the peak has seldom exceeded +3.5 and note again that the higher the  numerical stellar magnitude the dimmer the star,  You can learn more about Mira and Mira-type variables at the American Association of Variable Star Observers website, e.g.

https://www.aavso.org/mira-variables-period-changes

In terms of observations of these stars, it is worthwhile to get hold of the July, 2016 issue of Astronomy magazine (p. 62) which shows how CCD cameras can now be incorporated into observations, including of exoplanet .-bearing star systems. (Which exhibit similar photometric characteristics to eclipsing binaries)

In the case of variable stars, it isn't even necessary to have elaborate equipment to do a respectable plot of a light curve. You need only good eyes, good star charts (with magnitudes shown) and the ability to compare the (estimated)  brightness of the target star  with the known magnitudes of those comparison stars in the vicinity.

One such method is known as the Argelander Photometric Technique or Argelander Step Method.  In this technique the target variable (say Mira) has its changing magnitude estimated in steps between different combinations of comparison stars.  A step value is then obtained for each evaluation and this is plotted against a magnitude scale which ranges over all the visual magnitudes of the comparison stars used.

For example, in a technical workshop I gave to the Barbados Astronomical Society in 1975 I targeted Mira and used the comparison (reference) stars: Gamma Eridani ( m v =  3.2 (b)) ;  Gamma Ceti ( m v =  3.6 (c) ) and Delta Ceti (m v =  4.1 (d) )     Grading of the variable Mira (a,  m v =  2.8) was then done in three runs referred to as c-d,  a-c and b-c.    My chosen instrument for observation was an Asahi Pentax Prism binocular (10 x 50) .  Accuracy was enhanced by setting the binocular slightly out of focus so stellar images appeared as slightly extended sources instead of point sources.

The step value is found by first taking the mean value of the steps in the given run, then the mean of the brightness ratios, x: v and v:y where x denotes the brighter comparison star and y the dimmer, say in run x-y.  The runs, of course, must be integrated so that the independent step values, i.e. for a-c, b-c, c-d merge together smoothly in the single run, say a-d. (i.e. from the brightest comparison star to the dimmest. This is usually done graphically at the end of all the observations.  (Using a plot of integrated step value vs.  m v  )

An example of the (a-c) and (b-c) runs and estimated steps are given in the following table.   for the appropriate Julian date are shown.  Again, a designation 'b2v3c' means star b (Gamma Eridani) is observed  over 5 steps along with star c.   Specifically,  star b is recorded as 2 steps brighter than the variable v, which in turn is  registered as 3 steps brighter than star c.  Thereby leading to a final mean step value = 1.50.

No photo description available.

The light curve I obtained for Mira over the Julian dates of interest are shown below and the degree of uncertainty was estimated to be +  0.1 magnitude.
No photo description available.
This technique was also used to determine the light curve of a Cepheid variable by a Barbadian student who took first place at a Barbados Science Exhibition, e.g.

The best way to get started. of course, is to make contact with the AAVSO and indicate which variables are of greatest interest and what sort of instruments you have.  You will then receive an extensive handbook for how to conduct observations tat are worthwhile and how to report them to the group.
