Concerning Omega Blocks, Deformed Jet Streams, Melting Ice And Unstoppable Global Warming

No, the blistering temperatures-  recently felt in Europe - were no illusion or bad dream, as the map from the WSJ shows. (July 26, 'Europe Battles Record Heat And Drought', p. A1, A7).  What gives?  The past five years have been the hottest on record, including the record single year in 2016. The 10 hottest years have all occurred in the past two decades. The highest above-average conditions were recorded across Alaska, Greenland and large swathes of Siberia. Large parts of Africa and Australia were warmer than normal, as was much of Central Asia.

 Meanwhile, last summer's high temperatures and low rainfall in Europe scorched crops and pastures from England to Germany - causing river levels to fall so low that transportation on major arteries such as the Rhine ground to a halt. Contrast that with the image of the Rhine below - near the Swiss-German border- which was from our visit in 2014:

In addition, we've since learned  (in the wake of the European heat wave) the jet stream is again misbehaving in what's called an "Omega block", e.g.


  Which has almost single-handedly generated the recent European heat wave.  As I've written in previous posts on climate change- global warming, the warping of the jet stream is itself tied to greenhouse warming.  Typically, it keeps cool air near the poles, but if the Arctic heats up, as our data shows, then the air over it becomes unstable. Thus, in the winter, we behold Arctic amplification".  In papers and seminars delivered at the Geophysical Institute  over 1985-1990 Prof. Gunther Weller first pointed out that a much warmer Arctic also means a much more unstable polar region with more frequent intrusions ("waves")  of the polar vortex,  leading to frigid temperatures in parts of the U.S. such as we've seen the past few years.  In the summer, an opposite sort of effect manifests - as shown in the diagram with warm, dry air being trapped within a 'buckling' jet stream.  According to climatologist Jennifer Francis - quoted in The Financial Times, 'Climate Change: How The Jet Stream Is Changing Your Weather',  Aug. 6):

"The climate change aspect is contributing to these very persistent, big waves of the jet stream."

Further, she believes the undulations of the jet stream are becoming bigger, more pronounced, because of climate change.  This take almost exactly follows Prof. Weller's earlier models for Arctic warming and the consequences from an unstable jet stream.

This inevitably means the current phase of warming is uneven, mainly because the Arctic is warming much faster.  This is because the decrease in sea ice means the ocean is absorbing more heat from the Sun.  This alone is causing many unforeseen consequences from the spreading noxious Sargassum seaweed around he Caribbean, to the proliferation of Great Whites and other sharks near U.S. shores, as well as the noisome outbreaks of the "red tide".  Other less reported phenomena have also emerged but which few know or have read about, That includes the spread of an antibiotic -resistant fungus, Candida auris, and the increase in the size of hornets and wasps as an adaptation to warmer temps.

As the temp difference between poles and tropics narrows the jet stream will weaken further and the swings in shapes will become much more dramatic

One thing we've learned in the past three months, is the heat is not simply going to abate. We are now living in highly unusual climatic times, and this even before 200 cubic km of ice disappeared from Greenland in July alone.  More recently, the sudden melting of 11 billion tons of Greenland ice in one singular event, sending a massive fresh water input into the North Atlantic - likely affecting the thermohaline circulation.(THC)

The currents associated with the THC ensure warmer water (such as in the Gulf of Mexico) and are transported to the northern hemisphere.  Hence, it's actually a part of the greater scale ocean circulation.  The applicable concern hearkens back to a theory of Dr. Walter Broeker - then a geo-scientist at Columbia University- who hypothesized that a sufficiently large discharge of fresh water (e.g. fro melting ice) into the North Atlantic would dramatically lower surface water density( Fresh water is less dense than salt water of the normal sea).  Then the lower density water would not sink and hence not pull warm surface water from the equator up towards Europe.   

The paradoxical result?   The Earth, initially in the throes of global warming, would now see Europe plunged into another ice age on account of the thermohaline current disruption - from melting ice and higher precip - arising from (you guessed it) global warming.

Martin Stendel of the Danish Meteorological Institute warned (ibid.) of how crucial it is to understand the 'knock on' effects of a hotter planet, especially in terms of atmospheric currents and changes in the jet stream.  Many of these changes have to do with non-linear or "forcing" changes associated with the relevant greenhouse gases.

It is instructive at this point to look at the Earth's greenhouse gases and their forcing contributions  as well as removal times.

Stendel - like Prof. Weller before him- acknowledges these can appreciably exacerbate effects of climate change, and are little understood by the general population.  As he explains (ibid.)


"We have background warming and we have enhancement due to the non-linear effects, like the changes in the general circulation."


This, of course, has major implications for the melting ice sheet 
and means that sea levels could rise faster than expected. The most  recent report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change forecast between 45cm and 82cm of sea level rise by the end of this century if emissions keep increasing. A growing number of scientists think that may be too low. 

As Prof. Stendel puts it: "That probably underestimates the upper range of global sea level rise."


Indeed.  And right now my take is that climate scientists need to do a better job of educating the general public - using basic thermal physics- on the import of forcing and non-linear changes.  This could also help the mainstream media get a better handle on reporting climate change events, and avoiding errors like sloppy conflation, and minimizing the import of climate catastrophes - such as with Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico in 2017.  See  e.g.


The Media Are Complacent While the World Burns | The Nation

News stories about Hurricane Maria’s devastation of Puerto Rico, this spring’s floods in the Midwest, and other extreme-weather events almost never mention climate change, though scientists have been drawing the connection for decades. Instead, human-interest fluff prevails. In an 18-month period, TV and print outlets gave 40 times more coverage to the Kardashians than to the acidification of oceans caused by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide.

This journalistic failure has given rise to a calamitous public ignorance, which in turn has enabled politicians and corporations to avoid action. According to polls by Pew and others, as recently as the 2016 presidential race, only half of the people in this country said they thought that climate change was occurring and was attributable to human activities, and only 27 percent said they knew that almost all climate scientists held this view."

The most profound aspect of all the recent events is that global warming leading to planetary catastrophe may well be unstoppable. The reason? Not only the release of methane from peat bogs and Arctic tundra but now the discovery the rate of  CO2 concentration increase has amped up. 

It has now accelerated from 400 ppm in 2013 to 415 ppm now. That is an approximately 6 year interval for a per year change in concentration of :
(415 ppm - 400 ppm)  / 6 yr  =   15 ppm / 6 yr  =  2.5 ppm/  yr.

This is 25 % higher than the previous average rate of increase, i.e. 2.0 ppm/ yr. Given we know that every increase in CO2 concentration by 2 ppm increases the radiative heating effect by 2 W/ m2 we also know that the associated radiative heating is now significantly higher.  This junp in concentration accounts for a major part of the increase of atmospheric temperature with CO2 concentration. It also is not on the radar of most of the national media.  This is clear when one grasps on reading most media accounts that most climate reports (like the IPCC one cited earlier) understate the threat,   See e.g.

The job of the media is now to convince citizens of the global commons that climate change is no longer merely an inconvenient, intermittent nuisance but an existential threat. One that will wreak havoc with increasing intensity and devastation over the coming years.

How Will Humans Manage In A CO2 World That Hasn't Existed For 3 Million Years? Ans. They Won't

"The attack on science is underway throughout the government. In the most recent example, the White House-appointed director of the United States Geological Survey, James Reilly, a former astronaut and petroleum geologist, has ordered that scientific assessments produced by that office use only computer-generated climate models that project the impact of climate change through 2040, rather than through the end of the century, as had been done previously. Scientists say that would give a misleading picture because the biggest effects of current emissions will be felt after 2040."   - NY Times, May 27


The news this past week that the CO2 concentration has now reached 415 parts per million, which hasn't been the case for 3 million years, ought to alarm everyone with a pulse and brain wave.  We are basically talking about atmospheric conditions that characterized our planet before the species Homo Sapiens emerged.  A time when sea level was 50 feet higher as well.

Indeed, the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has accelerated from 400 ppm in 2013 to 415 ppm now. That is an approximately 6 year interval for a per year change in concentration of :

(415 ppm - 400 ppm)  / 6 yr  =   15 ppm / 6 yr  =  2.5 ppm/  yr.

This is 25 % higher than the previous average rate of increase, i.e. 2.0 ppm/ yr. Given we know that every increase in CO2 concentration by 2 ppm increases the radiative heating effect by 2 W/ m2 we also know that the associated radiative heating is now significantly higher.  This accounts for a major part of the increase of atmospheric temperature with CO2 concentration.

While it is true that  there is a yearly rise and fall   in CO2 concentration and May is usually the peak month for atmospheric CO2, we have also seen each yearly peak is inexorably higher than the last one.  This behavior has been noted for decades and hearkens back to the well -known Keeling curve, e.g.


In the wake of the findings, especially the graphs shown above, it is not at all beyond the realm of plausibility that the violent weather experienced in the past month: over 150 tornadoes in the plains, massive flooding, and triggering temperature extremes between eastern and western U.S., (we just had 6 inches of snow where we live in Colorado Springs three days ago, is tied to the higher CO2 concentration.

In the case of the above phenomena, start with repeated intrusions of destabilized polar air,  leading to frigid temperatures in the west - accompanied by massive snowstorms the past 3 weeks.  The frigid systems then moved to the east and met much warmer Gulf air, triggering violent circulation, thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding of the Mississippi not seen in years.

And this is not novel at all.   The summer of 2018, for example, was truly apocalyptic, Across the Northern hemisphere railroad rails warped and pavement cracked. Nuclear plants cut power output when their water sources became too hot. Reideer sought relief inside Norwegian tunnels as as temperatures above the Arctic Circle approached 90 F.   Meanwhile, historic rain in Japan caused deadly floods and record breaking wildfires burned in California and Sweden.


On the Gulf coast of Florida, as my youngest brother Mike approached his end with terminal, stage IV liver cancer in May last year, he'd email me about the reeking dead marine life. Near the Gulf living in Port Charlotte, he was on the front lines  of a red tide invasion that generated more than 400 tons of manatee and fish carcasses.  The killer, as he informed me from the Port Charlotte papers?  A marine algae called Karenia brevis, which releases a potent class of neurotoxins called brevotoxins.  In high enough concentration it debilitates and kills manatees and other native marine species.

This climate -related havoc then spilled into the new year with polar vortex intrusions and super freezes, e.g.

 No one could have foreseen at the time that the  intrusions would- by degree - become a repeated phenomena through the spring- as they have been. 

All this now as we've beheld (see middle graph)  daily atmospheric CO2  concentration cross above 415 ppm to 415.26 as measured at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii.  To provide perspective,  this is the first time for this dubious milestone since humans walked the earth — perhaps since  our ape-like ancestor Australopithecus.  

Even more confounding, Exxon climate researchers  predicted the current CO 2 threat as far back as 1982.   When Exxon Corporation was studying climate change seriously, its scientists produced papers predicting atmospheric CO2 and global warming under a number of scenarios, including a "high case" scenario  (well elucidated by Bill McKibben of  350.org ) in which fossil fuel burning would increase and previously unavailable carbon resources, from shale for example, would become extractable.

Look at the last chart at the top of this post, which is a chart from one of those Exxon papers (pdf). It extrapolates and projects  from a 1980 baseline, ultimately arriving at almost 620 ppm by 2080.  That level of CO2 concentration has been the threshold for the runaway greenhouse effect, as often expressed by the late Carl Sagan, and former Geophysical Inst. climate specialist Gunther Weller. .  The near term Exxon prediction has been startlingly accurate, at least so far. It put atmospheric CO2 (upper line) just below 420 ppm in 2019 and global warming (lower line) above 1.2°C after we add in the amount of global warming, 0.4°C, that occurred between the pre-Industrial low and 1980 [Hansen, 2018].  But even now many climate physicists indicate these values are low-balled and the actual temperature rise is far higher. The question of whether Americans - or any nationality- can manage in a full out greenhouse world has been fairly well answered in the past week with its devastating tornadoes, flash floods and now - we are informed - a "death ridge" with triple digit temperatures ready to hatch over the southeast.  Now take all these calamities and multiply their intensity by two orders of magnitude to arrive at what life will be like in 2080 with the CO2 concentration at 620 ppm.

Such a projection is what awoke Greta Thunberg to the fact she and her young cohort may not have a future. It may even be gone before 2080.  As we read in the current TIME  (May 27, p. 38) on how she achieved climate wokeness:

"While Thunberg was studying climate change in school at he age of 11, she reacted in a surprisingly intense way: she suffered an episode of severe depression."

In her own words, quoted in the next paragraph:

"I felt everything was meaningless and there was no point going to school if there was no future."

Which catapulted her to become a climate activist, now addressing - and shaming - the rich and powerful everywhere she appears,  from the World Economic Forum in Davos, to the UN Climate Change Conference in Poland.  

Will Thunberg's activist push,  getting others of her generation on board halt or slow the hurtle toward climate catastrophe? Probably not, but at least she is making a last stand for her generation and shaming those energy-guzzlers who have squandered the planet for them.

Once Again: The Current "Super Freeze" Doesn't Mean Global Warming Is A Hoax

Once again, almost like clock work, the  "dummy brigade"  has emerged (mainly on FOX, Limbaugh) to dismiss the bitter sub-zero temperatures sending the mid-western U.S. into a deep freeze  as  part of a "natural cycle".  Thereby arguing there's really no global warming, no climate change and hey,just bundle up more for the polar vortex.  It's all a "hoax"according to these nitwits.  

A recent example of the latter was a  letter in the local press (COS Indy, Jan. 2-8, p. 4 ) by a  Mark Rozman who claimed:

Climate change is a natural, ongoing process as evidenced by tree ring data   etc.

But there is more than tree ring data to be factored in here.   While tree ring data is a useful proxy indicator, it still doesn’t come close to ice core analysis in ascertaining the increasing concentration of CO2 and its effect on climate. In ice core analysis the air trapped in  cylindrical ice cores (extracted from deep within the Earth)  is chemically assayed .  The gases are analyzed to quantify the  CO2  concentration, then related to the climate at the time.

One of the most prolific ice core researchers - who originally discovered (ca. 1986) that the Arctic was warming much more than the continental U.S.  -  was Prof. Gunther Weller of the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska- Fairbanks :

 His work and that of others has disclosed that over the past 800,000 years the CO2 concentration of  300 ppm was never crossed until after the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the burning of fossil fuels.  Further, it has been found that no Ice ages have occurred whenever the CO2 concentration exceeded 200 ppm.  This means that climate change cannot be a “natural ongoing process.´ How can it when the greatest spike in CO2 concentration (now approaching 410 ppm) occurred after the human-instigated Industrial Revolution? 

In terms of tree rings, the relevant indicator is the ratio of the C14 isotope to the C12 isotope, as disclosed by solar physicist John Eddy.    

Eddy showed (‘The New Solar Physics’; p. 17, 1978) that an anthropogenic effect could be deduced from a graph of C14:C 12 deviations over a long enough period, i.e. 2,000 years.  

Specifically, “the sharp upward spike at the modern end of the curve is  attributed to anthropogenic causes and is the mark of increased population and the industrial age.” (Op. cit.)

Eddy’s work  in concert with many others, shows clearly humans are the primary agents driving climate change. Remove the human influence from the past 250 years or so and we are not approaching 410 ppm of CO2 concentration. Not even close!

Now what about the polar vortex? What is its role in climate change- global warming?

This Arctic heat emphasis, for example,  was exposed in the January , 2016 zonal temperature map :

Data from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed that January was, for the entire  globe, was an extraordinary month. In particular the data showed the Arctic took the brunt of heating (see graphic) with a temperature increase more than 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the 1951 to 1980 average in this region. (This data constitutes a "zonal mean" temperature map, which shows how the temperature departures from average change based on one's latitude location on Earth.)

The finding dovetailed  with Prof. Gunther Weller's predictions (from the mid -1980s) - based on his ice core analyses- that future warming would be greatest in the Arctic.  This is  a phenomenon known as "Arctic amplification".  In papers and seminars delivered at the GI over 1985-1990 he pointed out that a much warmer Arctic also means a much more unstable polar region with more frequent intrusions ("waves")  of the polar vortex,  leading to frigid temperatures in parts of the U.S. such as we've seen the past few years.  In one seminar he described it "almost like moving the Arctic to the continental U.S."

Unpacking it further: there is generally an immense cold mass of air that sits over the Arctic.  Because of global warming, climate change the Arctic has experienced diminished sea ice, E.G.

As the sea ice mass melts there is less reflection of radiation into space and hence more rapid warming of the surface.  This diminished sea ice then results in more heat dispatched into the atmosphere. This in turn destabilizes the polar vortex - a low pressure area normally residing over the north pole. This instability then allows polar air to plunge southward into the continental U.S. .

The details leading to what we've seen the past several days (with temperatures in some locations even rivaling those in Antarctica) occurred on January 2nd.  NOAA monitors showed that part of the stratosphere had a rapid rise of 50 degrees F in just a few days.    The event split the unstable polar vortex, so that part broke off. Afterward, pockets of Arctic air migrated south causing the current deep freeze.

Let's also process that the warming onslaught is exacerbated by the rapid melting of permafrostVast expanses of former  Arctic permafrost have been reduced to mud, and also in the process of warming released methane - perhaps the Greenhouse gas which is most potent.  See e.g.

As reported by the University of Alaska -Fairbanks Arctic Research site:
In 2016, the latest year of complete records, the majority of Arctic observation sites reported the highest permafrost temperatures on record.

The takeaway is that these sub-zero super freezes we're seeing with polar vortex intrusions are likely to become more frequent in the future, not less. The deniers and climate dummies would do well to learn more about this phenomenon and why they should be fearful, not wise ass snarky, to play into the agnotology narrative.  See e.g.
