Pelosi's House Bill - Thanks To Repub Extortion To Change It- Puts Millions More Americans At Risk

Image result for Brane space, Pelosi
The despicable, congenital asshole Dotard demanded no "goodies" (universal paid leave for workers) otherwise he'd sign no coronavirus aid package.

On Friday evening - seeing the just passed House aid package for this COVID-19 crisis - Janice and I felt confident the Speaker (Nancy Pelosi) has done "God's justice" in getting the best aid deal she could for American workers.  (HR 6201:   'Families First Coronavirus Response Act') Included in the original bill were:  expanded food stamps security, expanded unemployment insurance, free COVID-19 testing  and paid leave for all American workers . The last including all those in low paid jobs, as well as part timers, who get sick - or need to stay at home with kids.  It turned out to be a  mirage - given she and the Dems ended up in a disgusting shakedown "compromise" i.e.  to get a revised version passed, more like "Families Last". . In fact, given this is a national emergency I call a spade a spade and say outright the Dems surrendered to Repuke extortion.

Here's a head scratcher and also heads up:  After a Waffle House employee tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this month, the company refused to promise it would pay other sick workers to stay home.  Perverse? A moral atrocity?  Risking many dozens more Americans being made sick by unpaid sick workers?  Not under this rejiggered, extorted  House bill, whereby Waffle House would qualify for a big-company exemption.  In other words, American workers who may have to take off work to stay home with shuttered kids- or are sick themselves- are being kneecapped.  The big "benefit" package we all believed the House Dems were getting through was just a mirage.  The Repukes ended up taking House Dems' lunch money and getting way with it.  What happened to fighting for a broad paid leave package to get to all workers  for at least 2 weeks if they need it?

As usual, when the rubber hit the road the Dems turned tail and ran like frightened rabbits, so intent on getting any bill passed, to show they are paying attention as the COVID-19 outbreak spreads.  As a NY Times editorial properly asked:

"Would Ms. Pelosi please explain why the House decided not to require Waffle House to protect its workers and customers by paying for sick leave?"

The editors were referring to the fact the bill guarantees sick leave only to about 20 percent of workers. Big employers like McDonald’s and Amazon are not required to provide any paid sick leave, while companies with fewer than 50 employees can seek hardship exemptions from the Trump administration.  Sure the bill does require some employers to provide full-time workers with up to 10 days of paid leave, but this does not apply to the nation’s largest employers — companies with 500 or more workers.(Note: As per a WSJ report, (Mar. 12, p. B2)  Amazon will now voluntarily provide paid leave to both full and part time workers, as announced last Wednesday.). This lot together employs roughly 54 percent of all workers. So much for Trump asslicker Mike Pence's lie:

“If you are sick, stay home.  You’re not going to miss a pay check.”

Never mind Pence's lie, we know he lies just about like his master, Dotard.  We expected more from Pelosi as opposed to a pathetic, half- hearted  bill that shows a lack of will to fight on workers' behalf .  This is especially when we know this is the very time each American family needs: a) A straight, no strings, tax free check for $1,000 to cover costs, and b) paid leave for at least 2 weeks if they are sick or need to tend to their at home kids. Not to have these provisions discloses Pelosi too easily sold out to the 'pukes and their austerity assholes.  We also know the price in increased infections and not flattening the curve- allowing hospitals nationwide to be overrun -could be the price finally paid. A price about 100 times greater than the niggardly Repubs are trying to save.

Our own  (Colorado) Sen. Ken Buck, even with these exemptions, called the hollow bill a "boondoggle" (Denver Post, Saturday)  prompting a good friend to wish for him to get sick with the virus and have to stay home with wife, or kids. Oh, but wait! He's in the U.S. Senate so can take off any fucking time he wants and has gold standard health care. Excuse the hell out of me for calling out this asswipe.

As the Times editors put it, "Sick workers should stay home, but there is no guarantee in the emergency legislation that most of them will get paid."

The   fact those sick workers - say at Burger King or MickeyD's- may have to show up to flip burgers to get paid (and spread the virus to customers), shows  the Trump White House and congressional Republicans will have to bear primary responsibility. Say if the outbreak overwhelms U.S. hospitals and we see what's happening in Italy happen here. Also, they will bear responsibility for the increased deaths - which could run in the hundreds of thousands.

It is true that some big companies do provide voluntary paid leave, for example Walmart allows up to two weeks of paid leave for workers who fall ill or are quarantined because of a confirmed exposure to the virus.  Other large employers, including Target, Gap and Wawa, have made similar announcements. But such voluntary policies are not enough because the bulk of America's lowest paid workers - often those in retail and fast food (hence with the most public contact) are excluded.

So pardon me, but his party of  red state cockroaches bears  the primary responsibility for the abomination of prioritizing corporate profits in the midst of a public health emergency.  It is especially execrable as these vermin  insisted on the exemptions as the price of bipartisan support for the legislation,   But make no mistake Pelosi is not totally off the hook, as she didn't fight hard enough.  As the Times put it:

"Why not pass a bill that required all employers to provide paid sick leave and then force Republicans to explain their objections to the public?"

This would have at least put the Reeps on the defensive, and having multiple pressers could have pushed the case to show they were the ones holding up action. But Nancy didn't do this for whatever reason, perhaps sensing time wasn't her friend and some kind of action - any action, even only delivering a half loaf (or in this case, one fifth)  -  was needed.  As for the small (50 or fewer employee businesses) a rational solution to their fretting over giving paid leave is for the gov't to provide each with an emergency subsidy - say $1- 2 m each - to cover the cost of paid leave for their workers.  As one economist noted on CNN Saturday, "$50-60 billion stimulus for the scale of employment dislocation we face is absurd. We're gonna need at least $1 trillion and even that may not be enough."

But if that pathetic bill full of loopholes translates into 20 million more Americans infected, and 1 million dying what was the point?    To appease a bunch of reprobates who wish to destroy the whole basis of functioning government anyway?  As Joe Conason spelled it out in a recent smirkingchimp.com blog post ('Conservatism Is Going To Kill Us All'):

"For the past three years, Trump and the Republicans have busied themselves with attacks on our government’s intelligence capabilities, our health systems, even the health coverage that would enable Americans to cope with an epidemic like coronavirus might become. They railed against “the deep state”; they sabotaged fundamental services; they behaved as if society needs no sentinels or guard posts; and now they pretend to be able to protect us."

That says it all and I don't need to add more. Suffice it to say Pelosi and the House Dems dropped the ball big time and this could come back to bite them in November.  Before signing off let me note that Charlie Crist (D, FLA) was more optimistic on AM Joy today,  forecasting a "come to Jesus"  moment for the pukes to agree to change the bill back- or at least award more paid leave. According to Charlie, who put on his Pollyanna garb instead of big boy pants (imho):

"Well, I think you're gonna see this thing expand. The Speaker wanted to get something passed, Very smart of her!  She wanted to have something ready for  the Senate to vote on, hopefully on Monday. I think that was responsible.  It was an amazing bill. You have paid leave, sick leave, for the poor. It's very comprehensive and I think an important first step.  The longest journey begins with one step and I am sure we can improve it. I am confident of it!"

Well, Mr Crist, I would be as well IF there were a Dem president instead of Trump and a Dem Senate, as opposed to a bunch of spinelsss Republican whelps who pant to kiss Trump's ass every second of every day.  Just saying.   But if that  political wishful thinking of yours doesn't manifest then millions more American workers are shafted and many times more trusting citizens will be put at risk for getting this illness  - including seniors.

Five Takeaways From Last Night's Debacle

And I use that term "debacle" deliberately, because seriously, Americans have no idea what they are in for. I refer to two disparate groups: 1) the energized and angry Repubs who were driven by Obama hatred to take it out on any Dem, and 2) the lazy-ass Dems who sat at home or never even attempted to vote in the first place, enabling this travesty.

Anyway, let me give 5 takeaways from this debacle which has left the Repukes in control of the Senate with a 52-48 majority so far, and also in charge of many governorships (which could allow a lot more gerrymandering to ensure future repuke domination):

1) Democratic coalition voters are politically immature and too mesmerized by the cult of personality.

This explains why they never turn out in the same numbers for  mid-terms as they do for general elections. In so doing, by their absence, they invariably cede power to the angry wackjobs who are always intent to vote in mid-terms to "teach them libruls a lesson". The numbers as displayed this morning on the CBS stat board tell the sorry story:

In the 2012 general election, young (18-22 yrs.) voters represented 19 % of the electorate while yesterday they represented only 13 %. African-Americans, meanwhile dropped from 13% to 12% representation and Hispanics from 10% to 8 %.   Given many races - such as here in Colorado for the Senate seat occupied by Mark Udall - came down to 5-7 pt, wins it means that this absence in the current election could well have explained Udall's losing his seat to the nimrod Cory Gardener.

I attribute this backsliding to political immaturity, driven especially by younger voters' need to embrace a personality, as opposed to grasping the issues in play. If they would detach from personality worship, and simply study issues in each state and the candidates, this regular falloff should not happen.

2) As usual the Right was energized by fear and anger.

And in contrast, as in 2010, the Right's loonies came out angry in their numbers, driven by the nuts on FOX and Rush Limbaugh.  They came out in larger numbers than the original "Obama coalition" and this possibly explains up to 50 percent of the losses suffered by the Democrats.

It is no secret that the handlers of the Tea Party nuts and others on the Right know how to manage their minds to drive them to the polls in higher numbers than their D-counterparts. We call it "dog whistle" politics, especially presenting numerous unsavory images of Obama to try to instill racial hatred and fear. The voters will deny this plays any part, of course, but at a deep subliminal level it certainly does. One need not go out on a black person's lawn and actually wear a white robe and burn a cross to be a racist. He need only put up a 'skunk' image on Facebook and assert that it should be the "Presidential seal" for Obama so long as he's in office, since he "smells" and is "part black, part white". Funny? Not!

3) Money, as usual, trumped votes in at least three states - probably more.

As noted on Scarborough this a.m., the Koch brothers, using their tons of money and the front of "Americans for Prosperity" were significantly better this time around at the ground game -especially in North Carolina and Florida. That easily made the difference in those states, i.e. in Kay Hagen losing to Tillis in NC and Charlie Crist losing to Columbia HCA criminal Rick Scott in FL.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, big money flooded the state to try to get rid of Mark Udall (which succeeded) as well as the ability to label GMO foods (downed by a 68% 'No' vote). In the last case, opponents - mainly the pawns of multinationals like Monsanto- deluged the state with negative ads and spend nearly $12 m to the 1/2 m of pro-labelers.

The only good news? Hickenlooper held on as Colorado governor by 48.3 percent to 47.1 percent for Bob Beauprez.

4) Democratic candidates need to embrace their leader not run from him.

This was evident throughout as Dem Senate and other candidates shamefully ran from Obama and his accomplishments rather than embracing them, touting them. This was especially critical in states like Colorado where health exchanges were set up under the Affordable Care Act and have proven a boon to many. But Udall didn't say a word about the Act, or its benefits - focusing mainly on how women will suffer by losing contraceptives if Cory Gardener is elected.

News for you, Sen. Udall: Colorado women care about more dimensions of their health care than just contraception and you ought to have made that message clearer!

5) The Democrats need Think Tanks to Craft Their Narratives.

I have said this many times before but will repeat it again: the Dems are lousy at formulating convincing narratives which are as good as the Republicans. Classic case? The Reeps call removing the Bush tax cuts a "tax hike". The Dem response? To sit on their thumbs and sing 'la-la-la'. They have no convincing response. The Reepos say that estate taxes are "death taxes" - again no response. The Dems simply appear dumbstruck at how the  other side has seized the language and used it to create multiple mind fucks.  Can they create a mind fuck of their own? NO they can't.

This is why they need real Dem dedicated think tanks to think up narratives for them, analogous to the American Enterprise Institute on the Right, as well as American Heritage Foundation.

Maybe, just maybe, these takeaways will be acted upon next time around. But I remain a skeptic.

Florida's "FANGATE" - A Case of Political BLOW-VIATION

Often in the course of observing American politics, the deep politics maven must stand in awe at the lack of perception, and the willingness to be blinded and bamboozled by bullshit as well as misled on priorities. Such has been the case with the ludicrous Florida "Fangate" brouhaha - which transpired before the planned recent debate between Charlie Crist (former FLA Gov.) and Rick Scott - the current one.

According to Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel reporter Rosemary Goudreau, one of the debate panelists - appearing on Steve Kornacki's 'UP' this morning, a Scott advisor jumped before the question panel minutes before the debate start, and began barking questions like: "Are you going to permit this? Are you going to allow Crist to break the rules?"

He was referring to Crist being allowed to bring his trademark fan in with him. Note: the fan - from the images presented on UP in various venues where Crist appeared-  had no secret compartments from which hidden lasers might pop out by which to blind the eyes of the opponent, unnerve him or otherwise throw him off his game.  In other words, the whole kerfuffle literally appeared to be the proverbial storm in a teacup.

Anyway, Ms. Goudreau expressed shock since according to her, "The rules as we knew them were just one minute each, and thirty seconds for each response. This made sense because,  believe me, Florida mid-term voters have more hot potatoes on their plate, including their health care and educational systems, perils to the environment from climate change (eroding beaches) and pollutants than fretting over whether one of the debaters brings a fan along with him.

As for Rick Scott, most readers will have seen from my Nov. 4, 2012 blog post that he is not held in much esteem by yours truly. Scott, for those unaware,  once headed the notorious  healthcare outfit, Columbia HCA - which was once found guilty of overcharging Medicare over $600m while Scott was CEO. Scott himself had admitted:

"As I have said repeatedly Columbia HCA made mistakes, and I take responsibility for what happened on my watch as CEO."

What were those 'mistakes'?

The Miami Herald in an expose (June 27, 2010)of Scott's Columbia HCA and the aftermath  noted, despite Scott denying that he knew a fraud was taking place:

"Federal investigators found that Scott took part in business practices at Columbia/HCA that were later found to be illegal -- specifically, that Scott and other executives offered financial incentives to doctors in exchange for patient referrals, in violation of federal law, according to lawsuits the Justice Department filed against the company in 2001.

The doctor payments were among 10 different kinds of fraud identified by the Justice Department in its 10-year probe of the company, records show. Three years after Scott left Columbia/HCA, the company admitted wrongdoing, pleading guilty to 14 felonies -- most committed during Scott's tenure -- in addition to paying two sets of fines totaling $1.7 billion.
.."

Then prior to the general election in 2012, Scott gained further  notoriety by failing to do diddly  about extending early voting times, thereby causing unconscionable voting line waits of up to 6 HOURS as reported in The Miami Herald on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012. This followed a stream of complaints from voters (mostly African-American, Hispanic) who reported voting line waits of up to SEVEN hours Saturday, Nov. 3.  As a number of outside observers were quoted in the Herald:: "The extraordinarily long lines and extreme delays created unjustifiably burdened the right to vote"

That was putting it mildly! Think of the oldsters, pregnant women, disabled and others who simply physically would not be able to withstand such rigors, and hence would have to give up their franchise in the interests of their own health and well being.

Anyway, given the background of this trickster, why would anyone not believe he's capable of gaming any scenario or venue he wanted? Including a debate format - hence interjecting a stupid non-issue like his opponent bringing along a fan which even Scott had to know he carried everywhere.  So why all the huff and puff? Well, because it served Scott's interest in distracting voters from the real issues affecting the state.

Look, even for me Crist's fan is hilarious. But hey - it's also innocuous! The sign of a serious debater or politician is in discerning the truly threatening from the non-threatening and Rick Scott failed that test, unless - again- he was intent on gaming the debates and turning them into a laughing stock. Because he was the one that made a 'federal case' out of the stupid fan. A serious politician, by contrast, would have ignored it, taken the stage and proceeded with the debate accepting the basic rules without trying to finagle new ones based on having a fan or not. Talk about stupid!

Aside: Much of this whole issue emerged out of the "no electronic devices" rule bunkum which Scott also used  against Dem Alex Sink in 2010 - for the gubernatorial election. Evidently, Sink pulled out her smart phone at one point and Scott went ballistic believing she was "cheating" or something. (What? She needed her notes forwarded to her phone?)  The ploy worked and Scott won the election. Clearly, having succeeded with this initial stagecraft, Rick Scott believed he could use it again - now with Crist's fan - despite there being no way to cheat using a fan. Never mind, it's an "electronic device".

Anyway, now that the dust has cleared both sides have agreed to hold the debate again next week - minus the fan.

Let us hope that there will be no further untoward issues interjected based on imaginary pseudo "rules" - such as maybe Charlie Crist parting his hair on the "wrong" side of his head.

Florida's voters have bigger fish to fry than to allow themselves to be distracted by errant twaddle!
