Controlling This (Likely Airborne) U.S. Covid -19 Disaster May Have To Await Getting Rid Of Trump

"What we're seeing now is worse than 9/11 and the Great Recession combined."  Sarah Nelson, United Flight Attendant, last night on 'All In'.

"Remember when we were locked down and we all said we need to use the time to suppress the virus and put infrastructure in place?   Testing, tracing, ppe and all sorts of stuff to keep it  from coming back.  We did none of those things and then the CDC issued guidelines on how to open safely. But Trump pushed states to ignore those guidelines, which many did and they reopened too early.  And now, what do we have? We have a curve that looks like this. (See graphic).  Unlike anywhere else in the world the virus is on a huge upward spike in this country, setting records with the number of cases nearly every day. ..Cases are increasing in 38 states and we've now seen more deaths than anywhere else in the world.

All the while this president has been focused on one thing, his re-election. He believes that depends on economic growth and getting back to normal. So now Trump, his administration and the Republicans are out pushing the message so hard that 'things are good and we're moving in the right direction'.  But it is so preposterous that even Trump TV is not buying it.

I mean, there's 130,000 people dead, it's a burning garbage fire. A bit hard to sell that message.  Yet, instead of dealing with the virus this president pushed everyone to reopen to get the economy restarted. So jobs could come back and he could get his growth and get re-elected.  And so he is doing the same thing with schools right now.

There are a long list of problems that need to be solved before schools can reopen, but the president is incapable of solving them.  He just wants them to reopen so people can go back to work. So things can be normal and he can get re-elected.  And he actually threatened to cut off funding if they do not reopen. Also today he said he disagreed with the CDC guidelines for opening the schools. So he's now pushing the CDC to override their own guidelines.

So if I've got that right, we don't want the guidance of the nation's top health agency on how to stay safe in a pandemic to be the reason why we don't send our kids to school,  while we're suffering from the worst outbreak in the world.  So the president will tell them to change the guidance.  And it's not the first time he's done that.  He did it back in April and May when he didn't like the CDC reopening guidance for business.  He even pressured governors to ignore that guidance, just like he pushed the CDC to change their guidance for reopening churches. And now he's not happy with the CDC guidance on schools.

So what do you think is going to happen? Look, the last person in the world you can trust right now with the safety of your kids is Donald Trump. Not only because he's willing to change or ignore scientific guidelines to keep Americans safe, or because he's threatening to cut off funds for schools - when what they need is a massive amount of money- for all the changes needed in order to safely bring back students.

But also because the best laid plans are not going to survive first contact with an outbreak.  This is the fundamental problem for everything right now, from elementary school to the NBA.  Other countries suppressed the virus and kept it suppressed. We NEVER did that!  And now we're trying to figure out how to live in a burning building, as opposed to putting the fire out. It's not going to work."

-  Chris Hayes intro on 'All In' last night

All you need to know about the metastasizing pandemic nightmare we find ourselves in can be gleaned from Chris Hayes' superb summary - from his introductory remarks on All In- in tandem wit the WSJ graphic above. Look at it, interpret it, read Hayes' words... and weep.  This is the gutter stage of hopelessness and incompetent response we're been brought to by Trump the  White Trash Traitor.   An infernal maggot, who as Chris Hayes has observed, is solely occupied with his re-election not the lives he was supposed to protect on taking his oath of his office. Putting all the unsavory aspects together it now appears we may not be able to get control of this virus until we get rid of the human virus - Trump.

It now appears the virus wreaking havoc is airborne and, if so, it means even more stringent procedures will be needed if the U.S. is to return to any kind of normality.  It also means we will have to get rid of Trump - the new virus ally - as soon as feasible.  Chris Hayes summary of Trump's  total feckless response and aggression in the cause of making more virus cases- makes that abundantly clear.  Put simply, we cannot expect the ship of state (the U.S.)to be steered through this Covid storm if the captain is drunk, demented and devoid of any moral character.

Some of the recent headlines that indicates Trump is part of the problem, not the solution:

WSJ, July 8, p. A3: 'White House Wants Classes To Open In Fall'

WSJ, July 8, p. A1, 'Trump To Pull U.S. Out Of WHO'

Washington Post:

Retail workers are being pulled into the latest culture war: Getting customers to wear masks

Mixed messaging and politicization have turned a public health safeguard into a lightning-rod issue. As a result, workers have been berated, even assaulted, by aggressive anti-maskers.

Trump Criticizes CDC Guidelines for Reopening Schools - WSJ

The preceding is a sampling of how the "great" leader is working at cross purposes to the welfare of the American people amidst this once -in -a -century pandemic. Faced with a severe test of rationality and intellect, Trump has failed miserably, even telling the atrocious lie that "ninety-nine percent of cases are harmless".  As if dealing with him alone is bad enough, we must now also deal with his verminous, brain-fucked followers as the WaPo piece about aggression by anti-maskers reveals. And Trump set these loons and baboons to such actions, i.e. beating up workers -even some health, frontline workers - because Trump shunned masks as "unmanly' and these mindless minions do as well.

This is why Dr. Joseph Varon at Houston's United Memorial Medical Center decided to allow direct filming of scenes inside an ICU - as televised on Maddow last night. In an interview later he explained he hoped by actually seeing these scenes of what front line medical staff are doing, people will drop the infernal (and idiotic) belief that it's all a "hoax" or "Plandemic".  Yes, the scenes were intense and they will surely be able to achieve that end, but only for those with IQs over 100.  Meanwhile, masked patrons - on seeing the unmasked scofflaws running amuck at assorted businesses - may simply decide to stop patronizing them.  So you can pretty well chalk up many more Chapter 11 filings, and more economic devastation.  After all, in the end any economy prospers only at the whim of public confidence.

Clearly then, with his mixed messaging (or none at all) we cannot afford to have a maggot of the malignant dimensions of Trump steering us out of the morass we're in - and all because of him.  As Chris Hayes said last night: "This is not a test you can get anyone else to sit for you."

Indeed, and especially given this test - which has now seen national failure on all fronts - as hospitals from Houston to Miami are overrun (WSJ, 'Coronavirus Cases Are Surging Amid Strains On Hospitals', June 30), and supplies again have to be rationed as medical workers burn out.  Where is Trump? Making every dimension worse!  This is particularly unsettling given we now have evidence that this virus is of an airborne variety which means rates of transmission are likely to go ever higher if we don't get our act together, and that includes testing and contact tracing. In regard to the former, we are currently doing 700,000 tests a day and it should be 3-4 million a day according to Dr. Ashish Jha of Harvard's School of Global Health.  Worse, some people are having to wait in line up to 8 hours to get a test, and then up to 7 days or more to get the result. This makes the test all but useless because in the interim said person can be reinfected.

What about the airborne aspect?  According to demonstrations using sophisticated videos tracking a sneeze, cough or loud talk,  the airborne droplets could spread as far as 9 feet in a closed space and last  an average of 1.5 minutes and up to 12 minutes.   See e.g.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDE5J7og_xM

And:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/14/science/coronavirus-transmission-cough-6-feet-ar-ul.html

The preceding  videos and demonstrations may help to explain the exponential increase in cases since Memorial Day and now the 4th (and again, I remind readers it's the cases with sick patients needing special care that will overrun hospital ICUs, not deaths) .  Indeed, any large gathering for any reason will be subject to the virus particles in droplets shot out by super spreaders, talking loud, laughing, or coughing - who are not visibly ill themselves.

The separation between what is referred to as ‘airborne spread’ and ‘droplet spread’ is really a spectrum,” especially when talking about relatively small distances, says Joshua Santarpia, an associate professor of pathology and microbiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.  Airborne spread has also been hypothesized for other deadly coronaviruses, including the ones that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). A handful of studies suggest the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, can exist as an aerosol in health care settings.  But all the incoming evidence now indicates this is real and the latest aspect we need to treat seriously.

To put it bluntly, the coronavirus is finding new victims worldwide, in bars and restaurants, offices, markets and casinos, giving rise to frightening clusters of infection that increasingly confirm what many scientists have been saying for months: The virus lingers in the air indoors, infecting those nearby.

If airborne transmission is a significant factor in the pandemic, especially in crowded spaces with poor ventilation, the consequences for containment will be significant. Masks may be needed indoors, even in socially-distant settings. Health care workers may need N95 masks that filter out even the smallest respiratory droplets as they care for coronavirus patients.

Ventilation systems in schools, nursing homes, residences and businesses will need to minimize recirculating air and add powerful new  (HEPA) filters. Ultraviolet lights may be needed to kill viral particles floating in tiny droplets indoors.  All this will cost money and Trump and his Repuke enablers have no intention of providing any.

In an open letter last week to the W.H.O., 239 scientists in 32 countries have outlined the evidence showing that smaller particles can infect people, and are calling for the agency to revise its recommendations. The researchers plan to publish their letter in a scientific journal, and by then perhaps the WHO will accept the proof.

What's the WHO's problem? Mainly too little funding coupled with too large a portfolio and a tendency to operate in glaciation mode when new evidence emerges (Which can be counterproductive in a pandemic).  The infection prevention and control committee in particular, is bound by a rigid and overly medicalized view of scientific evidence, is slow and risk-averse in updating its guidance and allows a few conservative voices to shout down dissent.

What all this means also is that Trump in his ignorance and yen to put re-election above all else, is actively trying to kill tens of thousands more of our countrymen with his reckless directives, pressures and autocratic B.S.  Like ordering the CDC to revise its rules for reopening schools, as well as pushing public schools to reopen without proper systems in place.  Is there a way to rationally get through this waking nightmare without killing ourselves and the economy too? Yes, and the basis was given in a superb WSJ piece yesterday, e.g.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-japan-beat-coronavirus-without-lockdowns-11594163172

Noting how this was achieved by focus on contact tracing (specifically retrospective tracing) and 'cluster busting'.. However, to implement this plan requires leaders of intelligence, courage and skill which alas, the current crop in power (starting at the top with Trump) lack. Hence, I do not see any light at the end of the tunnel until we first dispense with Donald Trump.

Donald Trump thinks his voters are morons. This universal truth was once again demonstrated this week by a Facebook ad working Trump's new statue-oriented campaign strategy. The ad declared, "WE WILL PROTECT THIS" and featured a photo of ... no, not some racist-loser Confederate general astride a horse but "Cristo Redentor," the famous statue of Jesus Christ that sits atop Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, which, for those keeping track, is not in the United States but in Brazil, a sovereign nation in a different continent.

It's small story in the grand scheme of things, but one that illustrates yet again that Trump doesn't really see Republican voters or politicians as fellow travelers, allies or even really as a "base" to whom he owes fealty. Trump sees Republicans primarily as marks, to be fleeced for all they're worth and then abandoned the second he sees no value in them. Trump's burning hatred for any American who didn't vote for him is well documented, but just as true and just as disturbing is his utter disregard for the lives or well-being of people who did support him, and continue to do so.

Profile Of Another Covid Quack: Joseph A. Ladipo (Still Peddling Baloney Amidst The Worst National Response To Pandemic)

Joseph-Ladapo Photo
Dr. Joseph R. Ladipo  - his Covid quackery continues to reach the WSJ op-ed pages.
And (right) Covid mutant he chooses to ignore.

"The crisis we now find ourselves in is a human tragedy, an economic calamity  but it is also a singular national humiliation.  We're living in a moment when the U.S. is a laughingstock or a subject of pity around the world.  Look at the chart of nations and all who've gotten their cases down, some at or near zero. Then look at the graph going straight up. That is us, our cases are skyrocketing.  We are living in this tragedy, this national humiliation for all to see. We keep setting new records each day, five times in the last eight days and yesterday another record." - Chris Hayes, last night on 'All In

"While we have been continually screwing up, we have learned something. We have learned that masks work!  Pretty well, to slow the spread of this thing.  If you wear a covering that covers your mouth and your nose that is going to make you less likely to infect other people, especially if you have coronavirus but you don't know you have it."  -  Rachel Maddow last night.

"Right now we are heading at a million miles per hour in the wrong direction.   It's absolutely the saddest thing, the most unnecessary situation we're finding ourselves in. And it's  behaviorally driven."- Dr. Aileen Marty, infectious disease expert who helped Miami-Dade County write its reopening rules (This morning on CBS)

"It's actually possible that we could become the next New York City. I can't believe we're now staring down the barrel of that gun." - Roberta Schwartz, President of Houston Methodist Hospital, quoted in The Houston Chronicle yesterday.

The trouble with medical quacks is that their words can be taken very seriously if published in venues regarded as having some degree of gravitas.   Never mind this may only be on the notoriously ideological Op-ed pages of The Wall Street Journal ("the print version of FOX" according to Janice), and despite those pages not having the veneer of respected journalism of the the rest of the paper.  Just the source name "Wall Street Journal" can lend credibility where none is really warranted.    This is the case with the continued bunkum about the pandemic and the U.S. response to it  (now  seeing a record 54, 915 reported cases yesterday)  churned out by the likes of Joseph R. Ladipo, a  Covid quack based at UCLA, for Pete's sake.  In his latest WSJ op-ed he started off by writing: (July 2, p. A17, 'The Coronavirus Credibility Gap'):

"The American public is fractured over policy responses to Covid-19. That rift is most visible in debates about masks and new rounds of shutdowns. Such disputes are common in a country as diverse and opinionated as America. "

Let's first register that the American public is "fractured" because of a lack of nationally coordinated response.  As journalist Laurie Garrett put it last night, it as if the U.S. is acting as 50 different nations in its response, as opposed to one unified country.   That, and the lack of national mandates has caused this virus to now spread like an uncontrolled wildfire, and yet Ladipo writes in his op-ed as if we still need to give different people "choices" in their behavior. ("The preferences and circumstances of individuals vary".)    Ladipo even has the nerve to insist "alternative to masks" exist and "include physical distancing"  - unaware or ignorant of the fact the two mitigations are not mutually exclusive.  They are intended to be used in tandem.

Giving people "choices" and "mask alternatives"?  No, we do not, if we wish to get this virus under control and not have the economy suffer irreparable damage, even as medical workers burn out and hospitals crater.   Ladipo, who often resorts to false analogy, invokes the need for "empathy" - as with HIV patients, drug users or cig smokers-  which examples do permit a kind of luxury of time for response.  But having played the fool for three months we no longer have that luxury of paced, measured and "empathetic,   even "tolerant"  response - say to maskless scofflaws- 0r idiot college kids who think Covid is a parlor game.  No, it's time to bring the hammer down, like Barbados did, fining lockdown and curfew violators $10,000 each and 90 days in the can.  When your whole home is on fire you do not use a fire extinguisher, you call the Fire Dept.

Ladipo writes that "such disputes are common in a country as diverse and opinionated as America" - and yet the case stats now disclose the only nation showing as shameful a response is Brazil - also led by a narcissist autocrat.  All other nations are seeing their numbers dive lower, even as the EU now prohibits Americans from traveling there for fear of spreading the virus. And why not given we've done nothing to show a serious behavioral response?

Contrast that with last night's scenes (on 'All In') showing people in places like Prague in the Czech Republic celebrating in outdoor cafes, New Zealanders playing rugby, high school students in Denmark out celebrating the end of school (and not virtual school), bars in Ireland back open, along with movie theaters, museums and other venues.  In Japan, the malls of  Tokyo are open and the streets as crowded as they've ever been. Just like New York City once was, the only difference being everyone wearing masks in the rest of the sane world.  So they can afford to celebrate a genuine reopen, while we pursued a premature fraudulent one that the likes of Ladipo had also supported.

Ladipo appears to have a particular "bee in his bonnet" about mandating that people wear masks.  Why?  Given that is precisely the item that's permitted the normal world to reopen while we grovel like fools in false rebellion, based on a fictitious concept of liberty. I have no idea also why Ladipo invokes this nonsense given even he must know there can be no genuine liberty without responsibility. Besides,  citizens of other nations display no similar reservations, nor are they any less aware of personal freedom. They just happen to possess a lot more insight into the nature of the virus and hence have more common sense.    Here's a news item out of FORBES that Ladapo and his fellow anti-mandate quacks ought to digest:

"Goldman’s analysts found that wearing face coverings has a significant impact on coronavirus outcomes, and they suggest that a federal mask mandate would “meaningfully” increase mask usage across the country, especially in states like Florida and Texas, where masks are not currently required.

The researchers estimate that a national mandate would increase the portion of people wearing masks by 15 percentage points, and cut the daily growth of new cases by 1.0 percentage point to 0.6%.

Reducing the spread of the virus through mask-wearing, the analysts found, could be a substitute for strict lockdown measures that would otherwise shave 5%—or $1 trillion—off the U.S. GDP. "

Here's a number check of how we are now faced with a five alarm fire and why a national mandate is essential - no exceptions (if you have "trouble breathing" you stay home!) if we are to dig ourselves out of the debacle we're in:  With a combined population of 2.6 billion, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and the EU are averaging 6,760 new cases. By comparison, Florida with 21 million people, counted 10,100 cases yesterday - or more than 3,300 the tally of the combined nations cited.

Does Ladipo know enough math to reckon this stat into his consciousness?  That is without making specious attacks using strawmen on medical experts' credibility?  (Such as belaboring that experts  such as Dr. Fauci held an  original position that no masks were needed. But that was back in February when much less was known about the virus and which behaviors carry the most viral loads.)

Here's another non-trick question: How does Ladipo now account for Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordering a statewide mandate for masks?  Here was a guy who originally didn't believe they were necessary but has since (as Houston ICUs are overwhelmed) had a 'come to Jesus' moment.  As Chris Hayes' put it last night "The country is in flames, and we cannot just douse each ember as it appears like other nations. That is not us. We are way past the ember stage. The country is on fire. It is in flames. And the rest of the world is looking on in horror."

And yet Ladipo proposes we get a metaphorical squirt gun to combat this raging fire, rather than go all  out.   Most aggravating is when this quack writes that:

"if political leaders and health experts want to restore their credibility and the public's confidence they need to admit that politics rather than science influenced important public health decisions."

But he's mixing apples and oranges here, in this case the scientists who use science with the politicos (like Trump et al) who don't.   Thereby, via such conflation,  it escapes him the latter are responsible for using politics to drive their decisions - the classic case being Trump for whom his re-election is the only barometer, and which is why now he tries to ignore the virus' ravages -  hoping it will "disappear" by November..

The other key point, less noted in much of our media, is the importance of a centralized, national health system.  As Laurie Garrett explained last night on 'All In':

"Every single European country has a national health system. That means they have centralized data, centralized purchasing, and centralized policy. So that a given response happens for the whole country, not piecemeal. Here, we have a completely fragmented response.  I mean just today Rep. Andy Biggs in Arizona called on to shut down the coronavirus task force and get rid of Tony Fauci and Deborah Birks.  Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo says we're not allowing these people from this list of states to enter without quarantine. So we're acting more like 50 different nations than like a single national response."

And of course, mandating masks be worn would be a key part of any nationally coordinated response.   As Hayes replied to her: "The only Moonshot I can think of to save us is a 100 percent mask adoption.   If everyone masks up and gets on the same page."  But as Garrett noted, the decision to wear or not wear a mask is being tainted by politicized memes, so if you wear one you are an "elitist"  and stand for lockdowns.  If you don't, you're for "freedom" and the economy opening.  She then referred to the Goldman Sachs report cited earlier to show this is a misdirection by those who ought to know better.  As Dr John Lapook put it on CBS this morning:

"For this weekend I'm telling everybody to stay home. You know our country has done things a lot harder than this.  Compared to what our parents had to go through in World War Two wearing a mask and social distancing are nothing.  It's a walk in the park compared to the rationing  and curfews then."

Maybe.  But we no longer have the stoic and made of sterner stuff citizens we had then.  We now have wimps, whiners and twaddle -brained imps who have lost their common sense, courage and intellect to PR and propaganda.   As a prime exhibit there is Repuke strategist Alex Castellanos who told The Washington Post:

"Members of the Church of Secular Science bow to the Gods of Data by wearing a mask as their symbol, demonstrating that they are the elite; smarter, more rational, and morally superior to everyone else.”

Maybe not necessarily "morally superior", since this isn't a gauge of morality, though it is of ethics, i.e. in saving lives and  grasping one's responsibility to the larger community, namely the vulnerable ones such as elders and disabled citizens.   But yes, if we accept the data and the science concerning the virus we ARE more rational and I'd wager smarter.    In general, anyone guided by facts and reason is more intelligent than one who is not, like Dotard Trump.

But Castellanos' take suggests we will have to  continue to deal with irrational clowns and the idiots with misbegotten notions of liberty,  as well as medical Sophists like Ladipo.   Thus, we will likely have to shut down again to force these imps to learn a painful lesson they ought to have learned in March.  As Janice put it: "This country has too many idiots!"  Alas, I concur.  The "Greatest  Generation"  we are not.  The election of Trump has ensured that, and the real test to see if we are worthy citizens will come in November, in whether we can expel the maggot traitor one time.   "Make America Great Again?"  Maybe, but only if Trump is dumped first!

Imbecilic Mask-Social Distancing Tribalism: The Best Way To Ensure Another National Shutdown

"Just because you're tired of something doesn't mean it's gone. And we are gonna pay for it. We're paying for it now.  And it's just going to continue to get worse.  Prepare for not being able to get into the hospital  if you have a car wreck or a heart attack- and there won't be a ventilator to put you on."   Dr. Thomas Dobbs,Mississippi Public health officer to Jackson Free Press, yesterday.

"I think a lot of Americans suspected this leader chosen in the last election might not have the right stuff to lead the country well.  But this level of multivariate, simultaneous, existentially threatening mass catastrophe ...this is what we've got. Economic disaster, rule of law disaster, health disaster, none of which are abating.  They're all getting worse with every passing day. And all of which are cresting simultaneously now onto us."   Rachel Maddow, last night.

"If we don't have widespread mask use as we head into the fall as cases are going up we're going to end up shutting down the economy."  Dr. Chris Murray, Univ. of Washington Institute of Public Health

"There's no economy when you have a virus out of control. We learned this lesson earlier and now apparently, we have to relearn it... We started to get it under control with tremendous sacrifice that we all made together as citizens of civil society. But it was squandered by our leadership and we're going right back up again, All that pain and suffering, all that staying indoors, they threw it all away."   - Chris Hayes last night, on ALL IN

In my March 23rd post I wrote:

"The question, however, is whether mere reason and persuasion can work given we inhabit a nation loaded with entitled people who have little sense of common cause and generally see individual liberty as their personal right.  Even in a deadly pandemic which has every capability of wiping them out if they put that personal liberty before cooperative action."

This was in the context of a NY Times piece by Robert McNeil who had written in regard to the potential American response to the pandemic:

"It was not at all clear that a nation so fundamentally committed to individual liberty and distrustful of government could learn to adapt to many of these measures, especially those that smack of state compulsion."

Within two days of reaching (successively) the most cases ever, over 38,000  yesterday and 36, 358 the day before,  with 29 states experiencing exponential increases, i.e. R0  > 1.0  we  have now seen the enemy and it is us.   Americans have fractured into 2 political tribes, which will be to the detriment of us all. I define one of the tribes as faithful to science - namely related to the biology of this virus - and who show it by wearing masks, and social distancing.

The other tribe I define as knuckle dragging imbeciles who reject the concept of public health, and refuse to learn the science underlying the virus.   These (mostly Trumpkins) also believe their fake "liberty" trumps the virus impositions  and any science related to it. These demented kooks call the mask wearers "sheep" and "slaves" as they harass public health officials to the point of forcing them to resign (like Dr. Amy Acton in Ohio).  This is because like children,  put into time out for their own good, they rebel against any restrictions. Hence,  they hate the mandates - for protective measures - they regard as infringements on their entitlements....errr.. "liberties".   Do these whack jobs even know that Texas has now peaked its ICU capacity at 100 %?  I doubt it!

These are crazies and extremists like the "Freedom Angels" who recently called out to public health officials in a live video (cf. WSJ, 'Threats on Public Health Officials Rise', p. A6, June 24):

"Hey public health officers you're in our cross hairs!"

According to the Journal piece,

"One of its leaders, Denise Aguilar, demanded the repeal of mask-wearing mandates and called public health officers 'public enemy number one'"

Process that for a second: This virulent virago is calling those who'd move heaven and hearth to save her sorry ass from Covid, 'public enemy number one'.  And why is this? Because she interprets a mandate to wear a freaking mask an excessive incursion on her precious freedom.  So presumably she prefers to be free and dead if she gets the virus and has to be intubated.   Adding insult to injury these misfits have live -streamed their protests outside public health officers' homes - and dispatched this to their 22,000 followers. No, folks, you cannot make this shit up and this is one huge reason - with non-compliant goofballs like this- the nation's Covid cases are spiking and the opening of the economy in numerous states could come to a crashing halt.   Indeed, barely ten days ago, the extent of the U.S. deplorable response compared to other nations was already circulating, e.g.
Top 10 Countries Reporting Cases, June 9 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document (CDC)
This is Christopher Wilson's chart - from Yahoo News  - of how U.S. Covid cases are spiking precipitously (by 36.46%) and more than any other nation in the world.  And it's gotten much worse since that appeared on MSNBC June 13.

You can thank Trump and the Right who  have incited their zombies into treating masks as political submission  and a part of identity politics. So all who wear them are  "sheep"  or "slaves" and  those who mandate them are "Nazis" or "commies", opposed to "our" liberty as "sovereign citizens".  So the red state Trumpers refuse to comply with this simple precaution, taking it as a sign of being a "slave" or submission.  (Some of the "arguments" used by the anti-mask bunch is that they "afford little protection" (hint: they protect others from you) and they lead to "oxygen deprivation" (False).   Again, these examples merely show how a lie or mind virus can spread to gullible and weak brains as easily as a biological virus.  As the Santa Cruz , CA director of public health put it (last night on Maddow) , this makes them "Ungovernable".

The tragic result is that even in states where the case incidence is trending exponential they happily help the virus to spread further.  The political backlash is so virulent now that we behold medical doctors like Dr. Nicole Quick being forced to resign in Orange County, CA after being called a Nazi and receiving a death threat over an order to wear masks.  This, despite the fact that mask wearing is the key to staying safe in any large reopening. Oh, and definitely preferable to continuing in lockdown mode!

But even among more intelligent news and media consumers I will admit there is wide confusion,  as a result of bilge sown often by the media Rightists and reactionaries.  A case in point is yesterday's WSJ editorial 'Coping With Covid 19' (p. A16) which insists:

"Flare ups are inevitable but new lockdowns aren't the answer".

But  they may have to be the answer - as in Texas now (under Gov. Greg Abbott's reopening pause)  - if hospital  ICUs are being overrun, as in  Houston and three other TX cities. A particularly vile remark in the above editorial was:

"There's no denying the flare ups, even if some in the media seem to enjoy the rise in cases and the hospitalizations in Arizona, Florida, Texas and other hot spots in the South and West."

But if these knotheads saw recent episodes of Chris Hayes 'All In' or Rachel Maddow, they'd not see any jubilation but a terrible regret this nation was unable to rise to the challenge of containing this virus like other nations, such as Spain and Italy.   The biggest  face plant in the piece is when the WSJ editors claimed (presumably with straight face):

"The mistake is thinking that in a country of 330 million people a single top-down Washington  plan would crush the virus."

Except it just might have, as opposed to a hare- brained "no coordinated plan" - allowing a misplaced "federalism" and each state going its own way, competing with all others for ppe and reopening even when the minimal criteria to justify it are not in place.  Case in point a new University of Washington study shows 33,000 lives can be saved through October by way of mandated mask wearing. What the reopening fanatics, anti-mask dregs and their allies don't yet understand is that the ultimate fate of this nation is not in their hands but the vast silent majority who simply will refuse to participate in any aspect of the economy if they feel that would be fraught with risk.  As Chris Hayes observed last night (All In): "You cannot force people into an unsafe situation in the midst of an outbreak."

The fallout even at this stage -  barely halfway into the 'first quarter' of the pandemic  -  is evident, i.e. the Commerce Dept. "affirmed the U.S. economy contracted  by - 5% of GDP"  in the first quarter alone (WSJ, p. 1A today).  Further: "economists project the 2nd quarter will see the biggest quarterly economic contraction in records dating back to 1947."   This is depression level carnage if we don't get this virus under control by the fall.

More collectively organized societies grasp that accepting more rigorous governance is needed in a national crisis and self interest must take a backseat. You simply don't get the luxury of governing yourself when the welfare of the nation or community is at stake.  It's time the current crop of rabid "liberty from health mandates"  did too -   especially when we are in a similar war mode as my folks were in World War II - in terms of mobilizing critical  resources, especially medical equipment.  In this regard I am always reminded of my folks' sacrifices.  Did they pout and cry because they had to adhere to strict curfews,  gas and food rationing and state rules?  Of course not,  because they put on their 'big boy' pants and  understood they were all in that great moment together, to subdue a common foe.  We can do less now. Less thought of "me", much more of  "WE".

If we are to emerge whole from this "multivariate" crisis (in the words of Rachel Maddow) we need all citizens to cooperate and that means accepting public health mandates like adults, not hurling poop against the walls and screaming like toddlers.
