Anti-Obama OKIE Reb Flag Wavers Ought To Hang Heads In Shame

It’s heritage, all right: What those ugly anti-Obama Confederate flag protests really mean
Obama greeted by Confederate flag waving looney tunes in Oklahoma City.

The spectacle of dozens of Okies waving large Confederate flags to greet President Obama outside his hotel,  after he arrived in Oklahoma City Wednesday night,  was deplorable. It rightly aroused such revulsion in the Republican Governor that he denounced the vile exhibition while Republican Rep. Tom Cole said:

"I was shocked and disappointed by those who showed up to wave Confederate flags soon after President Obama arrived in Oklahoma. Their actions were not only disappointing but incredible disrespectful, insensitive and embarrassing to the entire state.

....No president should ever be confronted by such behavior, especially when the visit was meant to celebrate and recognize some of our state's greatest achievements."

Hmmmm.....maybe a future "achievement"  ought to be brain transplants for the racist yahoos and their ilk who went out to wave those fucking flags in front of a black President.

Should the Okie Confederate flag wavers who greeted Obama be arrested for treason? Many believe so, as opined in a talk radio (liberal) show broadcast this a.m.  If in fact the Confederate flag is and was a symbol of original treason then shouldn't those who wave it be charged with such in retrospect? Ok, maybe that might be excessive, but at least these yokels ought to be charged with hate crimes against the nation's first black President.

Oh wait! Can't do that either because in this country hate is protected speech. Unlike in Germany, where if hundreds came out to wave Nazi flags at Angela Merkel they'd all end up in a German prison.

But at least one thing is disclosed by this aberrant exhibition: those who waved these execrable flags at Obama - knowing full well that flag's implicit and explicit meaning - are died in the wool racists. As a Wall Street Journal article ('The Right Way to Remember the Confederacy', p. C1, June 11-12) by author William C. Davis pointed out:

"Former Confederate states incorporated it into their state flags, and militant white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan began deploying it as a symbol of resistance to integration and voting rights,  The worst proponents of white supremacy displayed that emblem while committing unspeakable acts of violence against African-Americans and white supporters of civil rights. They still do. Witness Charleston."

Joan Walsh's observation yesterday on salon.com is therefore spot on:

"Now the flag’s racist meaning is crystal clear, which is why it’s becoming an ever more beloved symbol for racist morons, even outside the old Confederacy. The ugly Confederate flag tableau that greeted President Obama in Oklahoma City Wednesday night illuminated this new reality. It follows a similar protest earlier this month, when the president visited Nashville, Tenn. Over in Durant, Okla., where the president was scheduled to speak, there was also a Confederate flag protest earlier in the day."

The most odious aspect of the OK City display as Walsh also notes, was the Confederate flag protest  was reportedly led by a black wingnut, Andrew Duncomb, whose "Facebook page features lots of smiling, flag-loving white people." (The rest of the folks insulting Obama with the flag were white, according to local news reports.)

Can you say "Uncle Tom"? How about a token black idiot out to posture to appease his whitey Massahs? "Looka me, honkies, I wid yuh all!"

Incredibly, this numb nut Duncomb, calls himself “the black rebel"  but he's clearly a black stooge and ignoramus. He obviously knows nothing of the Confederacy, its abominable  history, or the significance of the Reb flag and how his ancestors were likely lynched by these inbreds - maybe in the guise of the KKK. He is,  in fact,  a disgrace to his race, and his exhibition against Obama proves that there are indeed living black people too stupid to see how their actions of racial appeasement actually mock themselves and retard the advance of their own people toward genuine equality.

As Walsh has put it, this twisted  loser has been "making a career out of claiming the flag really was about heritage, not hate.” He led a pro-flag protest through the Oklahoma City metro area on Monday, joined by 30 trucks waving the flag.  The whole spectacle of Duncomb leading the racist charge with his own giant flag was almost as pathetic as a Jew waving the swastika en route to the Auschwitz gas chamber.

As for the white trash Okies following this joker's lead, you can more or less expect it. Oklahoma is a red state after all and though never officially part of the Confederacy at the time of the Civil War it's clear its proximity to two Confederate states - Arkansas and Texas- enabled the toxicity to rub off on its denizens over time. Denizens, at least, who apparently can easily be led by the nose by a black clown (wanting media exposure)  to raise Confederate flags against a black President.

What this episode shows more than anything is just how far this nation is from truly reaching the stage of a post-racial society. Because there's no way that can come about so long as even one black person still perceives himself as such a mental slave that he needs to perform like a minstrel of old for whites who'd lynch him in any other context.

What If The Tea Bagger South Had Won The Civil War?

"Remember that had we as a nation followed the Southern model for government and social values up to now, we would not be near the great and inclusive nation that we are today. Remember that 19 red states (as determined by votes in the 2012 presidential election) are given back more in federal revenue than their citizens are taxed. The top 10 states that give more to the federal government than they get back are all blue states.

If you were the CEO of a progressive corporation looking to relocate, would you pick the state where people grow up having basic health care that includes preventive care for which your company doesn't directly have to pay? Or would you pick a state where people can't afford to even get basic preventive care and have high levels of diabetes, obesity, infant mortality, etc.?
- Jonathan H. Reilly, letter in today's Colorado Springs Independent.

It is time for the non-Southern American majority, in alliance with many non-elite Southerners of all races, to target and attack every element of the Southern Autonomy Project simultaneously. If the neo-Confederates want to wage political and economic war, their fellow Americans should choose to respond with political and economic war on all fronts, not on the terms and in the places the Southern conservatives choose.- Michael Lind, The South is Holding America Hostage, salon.com

Confederate sympathizers across the land continue to blow noxious clouds of revisionist history on how the South was "wronged", that it was really a "war of Northern Aggression" (never mind the South seceded first) and wow...how great things would have been if the Confederates had prevailed! (Actually, in many cultural-political ways they did, as noted by author Joshua Zeitz in his article 'Dixie's Victory' in the Sept. 2002 issue of American Heritage. From fundie, bible pounding hellfire religion, to run -amuck gun toting and incessant braying by the political class for ever more tax cuts and 'smaller government', the South really has put its odious mark on the nation.)

In fact, we are seeing the attempted revival of the Old Confederacy (certainly its values) play out again on the national landscape with this government shutdown – and as I remarked several blogs earlier – this is an economic manifestation of a Civil War. It is also an effort to racially tar Obama by the diversionary subterfuge tactic of repealing (they call it “defunding”) his signature ACA health care law. Whether hailing from North or South, the Tea Party is the reincarnation of the Confederates who once tried to secede from the Union. They can’t this time, but the next best thing is to destroy the functions of government so totally that – starting with their ignorant base- they will elicit (or try to) millions across the nation to demand Obama and the Dems capitulate - thereby effectively returning the nation to “Southern style” economic governance.

For those lacking a historical bearing here, “Southern style” governance means a basic formula including:

- No church-state separation and bibles admitted in schools as well as creationism taught instead of evolution

- No unions at all, period, in no manner, shape or form

- Minimal government spending on social services, and repeal of Social Security, Medicare

- Massive government spending on anything military, including building as many bombers, fighters and new missiles as possible.

- Total outlawing of abortion as well as contraception and also rendering illegal a host of sexual acts, including masturbation, oral sex.

- Imprisoning all pregnant women who are deemed to be risking the life of their unborn by any “reckless” acts – such as motorcycling, skiing or drinking alchohol.

- Keeping all females barefoot and pregnant, by altering employment laws, in the interest of “biblical mores and family values”

Now , what IF these Tea Bagger miscreants and traitors had prevailed in the Civil War? Let's give their worshippers and many others a bit of a reality check on what the state of the nation would be today. Maybe, just maybe, some will think again about their derelict ideations and realize the best outcome was the one that transpired.

If the Confederacy ‘Tea Baggers’ Had Won:

1) The Trade Union movement would never have originated in the 1940s. Kids would still be toiling starting from the age of 8 from sunrise to sundown. No worker's compensation, no paid time and a half for overtime, no time off for illness, or family problems.

2) Women, if they had jobs at all, would be working for less than half of what males earn.

3)Blacks would never have been accepted into the military or as football or baseball players. (They might have been allowed to play basketball, but who knows?)

4) The Jim Crow laws would still prevail, with separate facilities (restaurants, motels, rest rooms, etc.) for each race. Blacks would continue to have to sit at the back of the bus. Rosa Parks -- had she refused to change her bus seat-- would have been flogged then flogged again, and likely branded.

5) The lowest wages, slave wages, would predominate throughout the land. African-Americans would be disallowed for all jobs other than possibly house servants or lawn workers, landscapers, and even then only be paid by meals or housing - like today's sugar cane workers. No benefits, no health care.

6) Immigration, especially illegal, would be disallowed at the point of guns. Anyone crossing the border of even a light brown color would be shot on the spot.

7) The Confederate Battle flag would fly everywhere. There'd be no Lincoln Memorial in D.C. but rather a Jefferson Davis Memorial, with only whites allowed to visit.

8) There'd be little or no entertainment except for the Confederate Broadcasting System, and the Confederate Movie Network. The latter would show 'Birth of A Nation' on an endless loop, while the former would have all the current news about the great new Confederate strides.

9) Andersonville would never have been closed, and would remain today a Confederate -run concentration camp for those with pro-Northern sympathies.

10) Bibles (KJV) would be mandated in every home under pain of being horse-whipped - or sent to Andersonville!

11) Southern -cum-biblical morality law would rule the land. Eye for an eye justice, and morality from the Old Testament.

12) The military would be the biggest employer and the budgets would be allocated at nearly $1.5 trillion a year. The national debt would be twice what it is now, given the Southern ascendants had forbidden any taxes (thus, no 13th amendment to the Constitution would have been passed). Also, no Federal Reserve. (which originated as part of the 13th amendment).

13) There would be NO Medicare or Social Security. Those would be seen as "Yankee inventions". People would either make do with what they had, or perish. If kind enough, a gentle neo-Confederate would put an oldster out of his or her misery with a shot to the head or a shiv from an old Rebel bayonet.

14) The life expectancy would be 55 for men, as opposed to the median of 75, and 62 for women, as opposed to 78. All the wonderful modern medical inventions that beat back disease, including polio vaccine, flu vaccines, smallpox and typhoid vaccines, as well as MRI machines, CAT scans and colonoscopies...would never have been invented. Cancer and smallpox would be the number one killers along with self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.

15) University research would be almost non-existent. As opposed to thousands of universities such as we have now, there'd be maybe 100 in all. The only ones assured of existence would be the Ivies, e.g. Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc. because of their endowments.

16)Confederate History would be taught at all high schools and universities.

17) Corporal punishment (e.g. paddling using monster paddles 21/2 -3' long) would be mandated nationwide at all high schools for both sexes, as opposed to being confined to mainly Southern High schools (e.g. in MS, AL, GA, NC), as is the case today.

18) Bible reading would be mandated at all high schools nationwide, as well as prayer in schools. Any atheist kids, if they existed or revealed themseles, would get the paddle about every day.

19) Prisons would actually be converted to work farms, and prisoners (for all crimes, including anti-Confederate sentiments, civil rights protests etc.) would be rendered neo-slaves. Forced to work in the fields from dawn to dusk and flogged by overseers at any slight infraction.

20) Barack Obama would never have become president, nor would Herman Cain have beeen able to contend for a spot on the Republican ticket. It's also likely that the most Cain would have risen to in his employment would have been 'pizza delivery boy'- never the CEO of Godfather Pizzas!

21) Neither Barack nor Michele Obama would have received the Ivy League education they did at Harvard. Indeed, they'd each likely have only been able to attend a "Negro college" - if allowed to go at all.

22) Miscegenation laws (e.g. against the races mating or mixing) would apply under pain of instant execution...e.g. flogging then lynching. (Thus, Barack Obama might never have been born).

23) Adult Yankee atheists would be given the choice of leaving the country, or being permanently remanded to a CSA work camp.

Did the South Finally Win The Civil War? Maybe!

Denver Post columnist Ed Quillen often raises hackles and eyebrows with his provocative columns, but he may have outdone himself with his latest one (How the South Finally Won, April 18), which more or less takes off where Joshua Zeitz' Dixie's Victory(American Heritage, Sept. 2002) ends. Quillen writes:

"The sesquicentennial commemoration of the American Civil War began last week with the 150th anniversary of the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina, and the observations will continue for the next four years through the defeat of the Confederacy as its generals surrendered to Union commanders in 1865.

But one might make the argument that if you take the long view, the Confederacy actually triumphed. We can start with the Republican Party, founded in 1854 to oppose the Dixie way of life, but now a reflection of Southern attitudes. In capturing the Republican Party, the political descendants of the Confederates are accomplishing through politics what their ideological ancestors failed to accomplish on the battlefield."

This is true and more or less follows the line of reasoning of Zeitz. Though the latter doesn't go into the R-party inverting itself like Quillen does. Neither, however, explains how or why this political inversion occurred, or how the party that originally fought against slavery became the political descendants of those it fought against.

The reasons aren't hard to parse, and most historians trace them to the fall of 1963, when President John F. Kennedy enforced integration in Alabama and Mississippi by federalizing their state National Guards. Many Southerners, then white Democrats, became so outraged they switched allegiance to the Repukes...errr....Republicans after seeing their Jim Crow-based segregation shattered. The final cut was LBJ's Civil Rights legislation in 1965, which finalized the shift. It then became a matter of record when Richard Milhous Nixon deliberately used "the Southern strategy" to rack up huge electoral numbers in the South toward his 1968 victory over Hubert Humphrey.

Quillen is also spot on in observing:

"To be sure, chattel slavery has long been abolished in this nation. But you could consider slavery a form of cheap labor with no legal protections for the laborers. Now consider the GOP current efforts to bust unions, cut wages and benefits, and reduce workplace safety regulations.

In other words, one essence of the antebellum South's economic system is becoming part of the national economic system.
"

True, and we've beheld this in Wisconsin (with Scott Walker) as well as Ohio (with John Kasich) and Indiana. In each case gutting union power to make public workers de facto slaves. In the antebellum South this took the form of then freed slaves being kept on to work as sharecroppers, but having most of their meager wages garnished for boarding. Today's public worker slaves, are having large portions of their wages garnished to pay for benefits and health care, leaving them with little disposable income for mortgage payments, groceries or fuel.

Quillen's next point is also salient:

"One might also ponder income distribution in pre-war Dixie. It was extremely skewed with a few rich folks, mostly planters, sitting on most of the wealth, and outside of their slaves, lots of "poor white trash" scrounging for a meager livelihood at the bottom. It was close to feudal, sort of like the country you get with continued tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, ensuring there isn't much for the folks further down the ladder, especially after you privatize Medicare and cut Social Security."

True, and few people know this. One had an extremely inequitable society defined by tremendous disparity in access to resources. Even most whites lived at the level of indentured servants, though the racial clarion calls of the plantation owners were deft enough to entice them to forego their own interests and fight for the Confederacy (which regarded them as little better than expendable cannon fodder). Renunciation of the government was part and parcel of this mentality, and expressed itself not only in rejection of higher taxes but in opposing any external government injunctions. Thus, the infamous reply of one Georgia Senator to Stonewall Jackson's plea to have powers equal to Lincoln: "Ah will remain a Rebel even in this Confederacy!"

Quillen again:

"Lincoln and the Republicans of 1861 supported protective tariffs, not just to help finance the federal government, but also to support domestic industry and raise wages. The South supported free trade — South Carolina's first secession threat came in 1832 in opposition to "the tariff of abominations" — and today's GOP is a big supporter of free trade."

This is also key! And like the Confederates of old, the Repukes disdain any intake of money to pay for their wars or occupations. Already, even before Obama entered, they'd squandered over $3 trillion in Iraq and Afghanistan and didn't offer to hike taxes one red cent and indeed, added insult to injury by tacking on tax CUTS in so-called wartime. (Which makes a mockery of the claim that it is "wartime")

And further:

"The Old South also opposed federal spending on "internal improvements" — canals, railroads, turnpikes and the like — in the first part of the 19th century. That is, investment in national infrastructure, and where does the anti-investment rhetoric come from today if not the GOP?"

Absolutely! And ever since the illegitimate ascension of Dumbya Bush to power (in 2001), stoking people to buy, buy, buy...despite starting a "war" ...not one damned thing was done to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Like the Old South, which blamed its decay on 'carpetbaggers' and liberated black slaves, today's repukes blame it on liberals or "socialists" when they wouldn't recognize one of the latter if it bit them in the ass.

Quillen once again:

"Nor was the South big on spending for education. Southern senators and representatives blocked early efforts to establish state land-grant colleges. As for the local common schools, the illiteracy rate in Dixie, even among whites, was much higher than in the North, which supported public education. The Southern heritage of poorly funding public education is now a national Republican policy, which also involves taking money from the public coffers to support private religious schools."

Exactly so, and we know the whole voucher ruse is an elaborate bait and switch designed to defund public schools while not really helping those kids who go to alternatives via vouchers. Analysis of many voucher programs, including in Washington, DC and Milwaukee has shown they don't fulfill expectations, and scores attained on standardized tests are up to a standard deviation below the means expected in normal public schooling.

Quillen penultimately notes:

"When it comes to foreign policy, the South was expansionist and imperialistic, with designs for a "Golden Circle" of a slave-holder republic surrounding the Caribbean after the acquisition of Cuba and the rest of Mexico. The idea was to control their resources and bring "the blessings of republican government" to an unruly part of the world."

Indeed! And we now find this writ large as overall empire-building by the nation. Thus, the imperialistic aims of the Confederate South have now become endemic policy as this country is stretched across the globe in imperialist military occupations and commitments, from Korea to Germany, to the Philippines and Iraq, Afghanistan et al, all at a cost of hundreds of billions a year. (See the latest TIME, April 25, for how the military budget can easily be cut by $1 trillion or more).

And I save Quillen's best for last:

"When you look at contemporary culture, those who fly the stars and bars and esteem Nathan Bedford Forrest are somehow considered patriotic, rather than admirers of treason. Add all this up, and there's a strong argument that the Confederacy actually won the Civil War — not by force of arms, but by taking over the political party that had once been dedicated to its destruction.

Need I say more?
