In my March 6th post I wrote: "Fast forward two days ago, I checked the March payment and lo and behold it was nearly $5,000 MORE than what we should have received. A significant overpayment"
But now, after receiving a letter-notice from the Social Security Administration today, I see that I jumped the gun and the $8k - actually $8,347.00 for Janice- was a correct amount. What happened? According to the notice:
"We changed your benefit amount starting January 2024 because:
- You are impacted by the Social Security Fairness Act, which ended the Windfall Elimination Provision starting January 2024.
You will receive $8,347.00 around March 18, 2025."
That provision, to clarify, offset Social Security earnings-income for any pension received. Thus, for every $x Janice had received from her pension, $x had been subtracted from her S.S. earnings. So what was written about on March 6 was not an overpayment but a correction derived from a change in the applicable law.
