Casey Fiesler - CU Prof had funding cut
Let's back up a bit. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded the University of Colorado information science professor Cary Fiesler a $268, 428 grant in 2024, The funds were slated for a project teaming up CU media and communications students with information science students to create educational social media content about artificial intelligence.
The objective? Scholars well-versed in communications would learn more about the complicated nature of AI. And information science students would learn how to become better science communicators. Social media users would also benefit from being able to discern accurate, compelling information.
But alas, as the Trump regime's disdain for "DEI" - "Wokeism" metastasized Fiesler was among the legions of academics whose research was halted last year as a result of drastic federal funding cuts. All scholarship that the Trumpites deemed "out of alignment" with its mission (i.e. extinguishing 'woke DEI") was halted or terminated. Basically, anything the fools believed constituted research dealing with diverse populations, misinformation and climate change.
The purpose and intent of these radical dimwits was clear: research surrounding diverse populations meant these could be found talented or even superior in multiple ways and couldn't have that challenging the regressive ('whites only') narratives of the Trump "brain trust".
Alerting citizens, especially students, to misinformation was also anathema - given it would render them too smart and quick studies in spotting the propaganda from FOX News. Accurate research on climate change couldn't be permitted as this would conflict with the Trumpites efforts to smear it and undermine it.
So Prof. Fiesler, like thousands of academics, was caught in the trap of Trump's regressed "baboons" - as podcaster Kyle Kuhlinski calls them. As Fiesler related to the Denver Post:
"My project just died and my assumption is it got cut because it prominently featured the word misinformation."
Indeed, the Trump 'baboons' - as Kuhlinski noted in one of his recent Youtube podcasts, focused on canceling grants across the country researching the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Why? Because it challenged the regime's prime focus of keeping the U.S. populace dumbed down - or at least as many as feasible. That was the truth, not the twaddle circulated that it "infringed on protected speech rights."
The result here in Colorado? More than $375 million in grants already allocated- from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, CDC, and Environmental Protection Agency were disrupted. Meaning either terminated, reinstated through legal hoops and levers, or axed altogether. This was during the first 18 months of the Trump regime according to a tracking group, Grant Witness.
The loss of funding, needless to say, disabled researchers' careers, stunted young scholars from entering given professions and blighted the nation's scientific progress. Is it any wonder then, according to a recent Financial Times report, e.g.

More people have favorable views of China than the U.S. in 25 out of the 36 countries and territories that were surveyed, including Canada and Mexico. The poll was conducted from February to May, a period when the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran.
In only six countries do people still see the U.S. more positively than China, according to the findings released Wednesday. Views in 22 out of the 36 countries and territories also are more favorable of Chinese leader Xi Jinping than U.S. President Donald Trump, including in Canada, Mexico and major European powers including France, Germany and the U.K. However, people in many of the countries have low confidence in both men.
It marks the first time in the roughly 20 years Pew has been tracking global opinions that China has been viewed more positively than the U.S., said Laura Silver, associate director of Pew’s Global Attitudes Research and one of the researchers on the study
China also excels in things like development of solar and other alternative energy, superior fast transport, and AI. Thanks to the Trump cabal and gangster state the U.S. is being left far behind and it may take decades to catch up.
