"This is not an upgrade. It is Jordan in a more palatable package — evidently smoother, seemingly smarter and, therefore, potentially more effective".- Ruth Marcus, 'How Dangerous Is Mike Johnson?', Washington Post
"The findings in this year’s Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) annual American Values Survey are a disturbing reminder that, regardless of the political fortunes of four-time-indicted former president Donald Trump, the MAGA movement he spawned has radicalized millions of Americans." - Jennifer Rubin, 'Republican Radicalization Takes Its Toll', Washington Post
The election of Louisiana’s Mike Johnson as House Speaker proves the premise that all the GOP has left are Donald Trump and hate.
As Congressman Jamie Raskin told reporters yesterday:
“Donald Trump has cemented his control over the Republican conference in the House of Representatives. He has a stranglehold on the Republican Party. Even as he faces 91 criminal charges and several of his election lawyers have pleaded guilty now to election-related offenses, one of his enablers on January 6 has just become the speaker of the House Representatives.”
Johnson’s hate of Democrats is so deep that he led a Trump-backed effort in the House to get Republicans to back a lawsuit by 18 Republican state attorneys general to overturn Biden’s election as president.
“We prayed for a strong, pro-Israel, America First Speaker of the House who was committed to biblical truth and God answered our prayers.”
— Tony Perkins, President Family Research Council
New Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is more dangerous than Jim Jordan. He’s less combative and combustible, more likable, clearly smarter, a better dresser, there’s no wrestling sexual harassment scandal in his past, and he believes he has God on his side. A great admirer of the faux historian David Barton — a right-wing culture war icon — one can see him negotiating with the Biden administration over a myriad of issues, including aid to Israel and Ukraine, and avoiding a government shutdown. Which culture war items he intends to attach to any possible deals remains to be seen.
Newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson emerged from the 22 days of chaos created by his colleagues as the last man they could stand to vote for. That landed him smack-dab in the center of the frying pan of disorder that is a government just 23 days away from running out of operating funds. Never fear, Johnson said in a letter to his colleagues earlier this week: He’s got this. That display of confidence is the first tell that this inexperienced lawmaker, elected in 2016 and with no history of leadership in the conference, is in for a doozy of a ride.
