If Not For A Skank Named Linda Tripp, Bill Clinton Never Would Have Been Impeached

The "most hated woman in America" - Linda Tripp - after the skank ilegally taped Monica Lewinsky and released the tapes to Ken Starr.

As confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh are set to open this week it is well to bear in mind he worked for Kenneth Starr, the infamous lawyer who led the "Whitewater"  investigation of President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Kavanaugh, as we've also since learned - was one of Clinton's most outrageous inquisitors even interrogating him on the amount of ejaculate he produced with each liaison with Monica Lewinsky. Now seriously, is it any wonder Ms. Lewinsky had the sense she was born with when she walked out of an interview yesterday when the prissy media idiot asked if "you expect a personal apology"?   Lewinsky said she "can't do this" as she walked off the stage- realizing her dalliance with Clinton was as a grown, mature woman who made her own choices - not a puppet tool or victim who merits a "personal apology".

Kenneth Starr  himself was honest and forthright - at least for one sentence- when he wrote  in his WSJ Review piece ('The Impeached President',  Aug. 30-31, p. C1):

"I deeply regret that I took on the Lewinsky phase of the investigation."

But adding:

"As I still see it 20 years later, there was no practical alternative to not doing so."

But in truth, there was.  However, that would have meant refusing to make use of an illegally procured tape made by a virago named Linda Tripp, who violated Maryland state law by obtaining not just one - but multiple  tape recordings  (over the phone)  without the knowledge or consent of her friend Monica Lewinsky.

 Later (p. C2) Starr writes that the "sun could have set on the whole Whitewater investigation" but for the choices subsequently made, i.e.  when a phone call  came into the prosecutor's office on Jan. 12, 1998.  As he informs us:

"Prosecutor Jackie Bentley was working at our office about 9 p.m. when he got a phone call from a woman who at first declined to give her name. 'So let me get this straight', Jackie said into the phone, 'You've tape recorded calls from a woman who had an affair with the president? '

"Jackie asked her a few questions. Then the woman dropped a bomb: "You know me, I'm Linda Tripp. I was a witness in the Vince Foster case ...Foster was the lawyer in the White House Counsel's office who had committed suicide in July 1993. Tripp had been Foster's executive assistant.

"Tripp explained that Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern , had struck up a relationship with the president during the government shutdown in November, 1996, when interns manned the phones and delivered documents. Lewinsky, then 22, and Clinton began having sexual trysts in a hallway off the Oval Office.  Working at the Pentagon the following summer, Lewinsky began confiding in Tripp."

But this confiding occurred because Monica trusted Tripp and was woefully  unaware of the nature of the two -bit skank with whom she shared her most intimate secrets.  With "friends" like that you don't need enemies.  Ironically, while Monica was mature enough to make her own sexual choices she appeared to need a crash course into the psyches of human detritus and vermin like Tripp.

As most of us who were alive at the time know, Starr couldn't get gnatshit out of  sawdust in the Whitewater investigation so had to pursue the irrelevant angle of Clinton's sex life- thanks to Tripp's  interjection of criminally- obtained tapes. . Evidently, neither Starr nor his lackey Jackie , was smart or perceptive enough to ask if Tripp violated Maryland law in making the tape. Some prosecutors!

 That phone call at 9 pm. on Jan. 12, 1998 then should have been a total dead end. Either Starr  himself or a separate court ought to have disallowed the use of secretly made phone tapes of  confidential conversations with Monica Lewinsky by Tripp.   Tripp lived in Columbia, MD at the time-  where wifey and I also resided - and it was widely known Tripp violated Maryland statutes against taping phone conversations without informing the taped party.  Technically then, the Lewinsky tapes (Tripp incited Monica for more and more details at each taping)  ought to have been inadmissible. But Ken Starr disregarded the law when it suited him and used said tapes to trap Clinton in a lie ("I did not have sex with that woman!") which then became the basis for his impeachment.

It was the Starr Report, co-authored by our little wannabe SC weasel Kavanaugh, which laid out the  spurious case for Clinton’s impeachment and removal from office, based on Lewinsky's illegally- obtained taped spiels with Tripp, i.e. about a blow job and soiled dress.  After the case broke, and Ken Starr emerged as "special prosecutor" no one believed it would go anywhere, since Starr would not be able to use illegally obtained evidence. As it turned out, after Kavanaugh signed on as a Starr stooge and Clinton inquisitor, it didn't really matter. It turned out some laws could be ignored.  Despite that, Starr in his WSJ piece clearly had misgivings about his investigatory reach as when he writes:

"I turned to those who had authorized me, asking them to weigh in. I complained that the Justice Department should either rally to our defense, or if I had in their view gone off the rails, Attorney General Reno should fire me. But Reno didn't fire me nor did she defend me. This was moral cowardice."

TO which I concur.  At the end of the day, Reno ought to have given Starr and his odious  team the boot, given they had invoked illegal evidence (Tripp's taped recordings)  to justify going after Bill Clinton. Case closed.  Unlike the current Mueller investigation, pursuing actual conspiracy with a foreign adversary to gain power,  the Clinton 'blue dress' evidence really did constitute a "witch hunt".  This is given Tripp's nefarious role and now we've since learned the roles of other Reich wing apparatchiks. 

Barely more than a year after that phone call to Bentley, a lengthy, documented account emerged (see e.g.  'The Right Wing Web', February 22, 1999, Newsweek, p.34)  about a NY Reep media mole (associated with Alfred Regnery and the Regnery press) named Lucianne Goldberg.   To jog readers' memories, Regnery has been famous for publishing such classics as:

Anyway, according to the Newsweek article, it was Goldberg who knew Tripp was friends with Lewinsky, and egged her on to surreptitiously record phone calls with Monica concerning her sexual contacts with Bill. This sordid sleaze tactic kind of reminds us of many other Right wing dirty tricksters, from Lee Atwater, to Nixon "ratfuckers" Roger Stone and G. Gordon Liddy, and more recently (2015) the CMP bunch that infiltrated Planned Parenthood to make surreptitious (and specious)  "fetal tissue"  videos.

In other words, the information that drove Kenneth Starr to go after Bill Clinton (despite his second thoughts)  was tainted from the get go - not only by the sources instigating the release of the info - to use Tripp to call Starr's office on that January night in 1998. But the whole Right wing web that was determined to try to bring his presidency crashing down and repeal the votes of millions.  There is no analogy, not one, with the current Mueller team investigation, and anyone who seeks to make an equivalence ought to be recognized as an untrustworthy actor in the public communication sphere. 

Kavanaugh Not The Worst SC Pick - But He Still Merits Scrutiny - Not A Rubber Stamp

While Brett Kavanaugh is the least deplorable Trump SC pick, that doesn't mean he gets a free ride.

Well, today much of liberaldom can breathe a (small) sigh of relief that Donnie Dotard didn't select Amy Coney Barrett (previous post) as the Justice to replace Anthony Kennedy. As I noted, the selection of Coney Barrett would have amounted to a judicial travesty no less disastrous than the Bush Sr. choice of Clarence Thomas in 1991.  So, perhaps before the left gets hysterical over the Kavanaugh pick it needs to bear in mind Trump's choice could have been way worse.

Of course, to a patient notified he's actually contracted  dysentery,  as opposed to cholera, this is small consolation.

To make matters worse, Kavanaugh also did legal work for the Bush campaign during the Florida election recount.

Recall in that 2000 election, Jeb Bush had the voter lists scrubbed of tens of thousands of Afican Americans, who by a majority vote Dem. Greg Palast documented this  in his book,  'The Best Democracy Money Can Buy' detailing how 90,000 and probably more like 180,000 legal black voters were removed from voter lists in Florida, using the ruse that convicted felons can not vote in that state. Jeb Bush awarded the contract to the firm that submitted the higher bid, Choicepoint.  It then scrubbed from the voter rolls all names that were clearly black (e.g. first name Jamail, Devante or Kinesha,  for instance), that bore an arguable resemblance to a felon’s name.   End result? The SC handed the FLA electoral votes to Bush Jr.   Even Vince Bugliosi, who later blew it in a 2,500 page tome on the Kennedy assassination, got this one right. That was  embodied in his 2001 book, 'The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President'.

All of this in concert peeved Democrats no end, as it should have.

Alas, Kavanaugh is also a Roman Catholic - like Amy Coney Barrett - and he  discussed his Catholic faith last night in his acceptance blurb, proclaiming: “I am a proud member of the Catholic community in DC.”  Providing this disclosure while noting the priest for whom he served as an altar boy was in attendance for the announcement.    The good thing is he doesn't go in for speaking in tongues or getting esoteric divine messages.  The bad thing is abortion rulings could still be an issue for him. Or rather for those of us who defend a woman's right to abortion.

We already know, for example, that last fall Kavanaugh wrote a decision siding with Trump administration lawyers to block a migrant teenager in Texas from being released from custody to get an abortion.  He also criticized his colleagues for "creating a new right for unlawful immigrant minors in U.S. government detention to obtain an abortion on demand."  If Kavanaugh had been successful, he'd have pushed the teen into her second trimester.  Reinforcing this position, Kavanaugh also wrote,  “the Government has permissible interests in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor, and refraining from facilitating abortion"

So the jury is still out on his abortion stance, and yes, that ought to concern pro-choice folks.

At the same time, let's bear in mind the guy is almost like kryptonite for social conservatives.   Indeed, many of those groups have warned that Kavanaugh is "insufficiently conservative", citing decisions on Obamacare and abortion where they have felt that he did not go far enough in his opinions. In particular, they cite a 2011 ruling in which he dissented from a decision that the Affordable Care Act was constitutional solely on jurisdictional grounds and not as a matter of law. The American Family Association, a prominent fundamentalist Christian group, came out on Monday night against Kavanaugh’s nomination because his “reasoning on religious liberty, Obamacare and issues concerning life have proven to be of major concern”.

That social conservo knock was more than good enough for many libs (including me) to assert Kavanaugh to be the least of four potential evils. Again, try to think of it  not as conferring kudos but as electing to contract dysentery instead of cholera, Ebola or smallpox.

Still there are other issues that invite strong scrutiny of  Kavanaugh, especially given his views on whether presidents (like Traitor Trump) can be indicted or even impeached.  This is critical in light of Robert Mueller’s continuing investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.  Indeed, Sharilynn Ifill speaking last night (on 'All In')  before the announcement, noted it is an anomaly of the first order to have a likely criminal president making a Supreme Court pick at this time (perhaps weeks before being cited as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Russia probe),

 Thus, it is eminently justified that Kavanaugh face tough questions about his views on whether sitting presidents can face criminal investigation. For example, Senate Dems can cite a 2009 law review article, in which he stated that impeachment was an adequate safeguard “if a president does something dastardly” writing:

“The President’s job is difficult enough as it is. And the country loses when the President’s focus is distracted by the burdens of civil litigation or criminal investigation and possible prosecution.”

Aww...boo hoo hoo, cry me a river, do.   But see we aren't talking about a normal, legitimate president here, but a buffoon and layabout who spends most of each day watching cable TV (FOX News) and tweeting. A guy who can't even be bothered to read his daily briefs and has spent more time now away from the White House - playing golf or hobnobbing at Mar-a-lago and Bedminster, than all previous presidents put together.   THIS is a doofus whose focus is already distracted and besides, wouldn't know how to do the damned job even if someone tried to donate a teaching video. ("The Presidency  101").

Hell, five days into his presidency he  even bawled that the job had  turned out to be too much for him to face. Too many details, too much stuff to master for an extensive government bureaucracy.  Hence, his penchant for becoming a cable TV and tweet addict. See e.g.

The irony is that this consummate  asshole who is also a likely traitor,  selects a 53-year-old who has impeccable academic credentials and has authored over 286 opinions.  Unfortunately, one of those could grant Trump a "get out of jail free" card if somehow the culmination of the Russia probe reaches the Supreme Court.

Thus, the Dems must be as sure as much as they can be that Kavanaugh will act as an independent justice, and not seek to exonerate Trump because his job is "difficult enough as it is".   As per an op-ed in the NY Times:

"Fair questions would include inquiries not just about Judge Kavanaugh’s past writings and activities but also about how he believes various past notable judicial cases (such as Roe v. Wade) should have been decided — and even about what his current legal views are on any issue, general or specific."

The specific questions that ought to be considered by the Judiciary Committee, start with his opinion piece on relieving presidents of strong legal blowback, i.e., in terms of being questioned by Trump prior to the announcement:

"What were you asked about this article? What did you say? What assurances did you offer? What kind of things did the White House want to know?"

This is given Kavanaugh is the only person on Trump's short list who specifically wrote that  presidents should have protection from investigations. If it can be ascertained he was pumped by Trump to bolster that opinion or act on it (in Trump's case),  protecting Trump from a Mueller subpoena, the Dems need to full bore oppose it.

The 'Big Dog' Opens a Can of 'Whup Ass' on Repukes

Watching Bill Clinton at the Democratic National Convention (not 'DNC' - which is the official acronymn for the Democratic National Committee) was akin to watching a political maestro at work. This is the cat that the Repukes with all their disgusting malicious intent couldn't destroy through five years of trying, and finally had to use a trumped up charge of lying over a blow job to get him impeached.

People forget, or appear to have short memories, concerning the fact that the vile 'pukes were originally after him for some land deal (now known as 'Whitewater') in Arkansas. When they fell flat on that (three inquiries found insufficient evidence to prosecute) the Reep-fuckers went snooping into his personal affairs. They suspected sexual contact with an intern named Monica Lewinsky, but had to get the goods to nail Bill- possibly based on lying about it. They used a little nobody dimwit third or fourth level lackey go-fer at the Pentagon named Linda Tripp - then living in the D.C. burbs, in a planned community called Columbia, Maryland - actually where I used to live (until 2000).

Then a NY Reep media mole (associated with Alfred Regnery and the Regnery press) named Lucianne Goldberg, who knew Tripp was friends with Lewinsky, got Tripp to surreptitiously record a phone call with Monica ....concerning her sexual contacts with Bill. Tripp recorded everything - never saying a word to Lewinsky. After the case broke, and Ken Starr emerged as "special prosecutor" no one believed it would go anywhere, since Starr would have to use illegally obtained evidence.

Everyone in Maryland - evidently with the exception of Linda Tripp - knew it was a felony to wiretap someone on the phone, during a conversation, without the person's consent. But lo and behold, the rule of law was left behind as Starr and his gang used this unlawful wiretap evidence to go after Clinton for 'perjury'.

Many more of the details of all this were exposed in the Newsweek article ('The Right Wing Web', February 22, 1999, p.34) , that noted the 'friendship' between Lucianne Goldberg and Al Regnery and a number of events deriving therefrom.

The amazing thing is that, despite the vicious and criminal efforts to destroy Bill Clinton by impeachment, he is still a political rock star, and opened up a major can of 'whup ass' on the repugs last night. This was mighty payback after Romney, Ryan and other GOOPers attempted to recruit Clinton's presidency into their arguments that Obama was the true extremist. ("Well, we could always work well with Bill Clinton")

Yeah, right! Well, it didn't work!

Bill Clinton, after flashing his trademark 'aw shucks' smile then proceeded to blister the Goopers’ butts and pulverize the myths of Romney –Ryan to a pulp, especially noting why he succeeded economically in his two terms, ARITHMETIC! Romney and Ryan want to have no revenue coming in, even as they make massive spending cuts – mainly to programs for the poorest, including seniors - but double down on the Bush tax cuts and military spending. In the latter case adding $2 trillion to the Pentagon budget that the Pentagon asserted it doesn’t even need!

As Bill put it, we can't let these bozos "double down on trickle down".

On the other Big Lie employed by the Romney-Ryan campaign, that Obama planned to "rob Medicare" of $716 b to pay for Obamacare, Clinton said, “When Congressman Ryan looked into that TV camera and attacked President Obama’s Medicare savings as 'the biggest, coldest power play,' I did not know whether to laugh or cry.” He noted that the Ryan plan "dollar for dollar featured the same cuts" – adding, “it takes some brass to attack a guy for doing what you did.”

Trouble is, Ryan has no "brass" (i.e. balls) only lies! He can't even admit his budget is fully fraudulent because it does nothing, NADA to actually manifest cut or even slow deficits in the near future. While he makes vicious spending cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, he allows the Pentagon budget to bloat by $2 trillion and tax cuts for the wealthy shits, adding up to $4 trillion in Romney's first term.

Meanwhile many of the working class folks who are pro-Romney to a tee, haven't yet figured out they are the ones who will be clobbered to pay for those rich guy tax cuts. Clinton in his speech estimated $2,000 additional taxes each - to come as a result of repeal of the child (dependent) deduction, and home mortgage deduction.

Clinton didn't stop there, but laid out the stark divide between what these Republican Robber Barons have planned and the sane and rational world of Obama. To quote Bill:

“If you want a 'you're on your own, winner take all society' you should support the Republican ticket,” he said. But “if you want a country of shared opportunities and shared responsibilities – a 'we're all in it together' society, you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”

Bingo! And I already showed two blogs ago the Social Darwinist basis of the Romney-Ryan plans. How can any sensible working man or woman even think of voting for these characters? A re they really that hot up to subsidize rich guys? Or wait! Maybe, despite the odds against it, they may actually believe they will be rich like Romney too - with over $400m stashed in tax -avoidance accounts in Swiss banks and the Caymans.

To his credit, Bill also placed the blame for the 'incivility' that has marked this campaign squarely where it belongs: on the Republican party, with half of its base believing that the president of the United States was born overseas (and a good number who believe he was born here but is nonetheless “un-American”). The other half of morons still think he's a "Muslim" or "Socialist" when he's the furthest thing from it.

Me, I am a socialist! I've been a member of the Democratic Socialists for over seven years. Like Einstein, in his essay 'Why Socialism?', I believe it's the only system that ensures all citizens can get any kind of equitable break ....apart from the Capitalist-Neoliberal rigged market dominion system that Elizabeth Warren spelled out last night.

I know who makes the cut as a socialist, and believe me, Obama doesn't. (A real socialist for instance wouldn't have remotely set up a "deficit commission" to even THINK of cutting Social Security or Medicare. A REAL Socialist also would have pulled out of Afghanistan ages ago, instead of tossing more good money after bad when we have urgent domestic needs.)

Moving on, Clinton made one spot on observation that caught my attention and which potential voters need to process. Clinton said:

"in Tampa, the Republican argument against the president's re-election was actually pretty simple, pretty snappy. It went something like this: 'We left him a total mess, he hasn't finished cleaning it up yet, so fire him and put us back in.'"

Well put, and very well summarized. The odious basis for Republicans in a nutshell. The fact is these miscreants haven't earned power! They didn't in the past four years and until they do they need to remain in the political wilderness. A real one! Not only deprived of the White House, but reduced to tiny margins in both House and Senate!

Bill Clinton's whole fine effort may have been one giant step in that direction!
