Revisiting Angular Momentum Operators In Quantum Mechanics

  In previous posts, I showed some of the roles operators play in quantum mechanics.   For example, interested readers can refer to my 2014 post,

Where I noted:

"The brilliance of the early quantum mechanicians lay in substituting the operators ( e.g Eopp^ or op  ) for the corresponding quantities of the original classical Hamiltonian, then multiplying through by the wave function y :

op y  =  Eop  y

In this way, a drastically simplified basic quantum mechanical equation could be obtained, which could then be expanded once one substituted the operators, i.e.:

op  =  -i h ( x)

Eop  =  i h  ( /t)

Other (3D system) operators  can be seen in the quantum mechanical equation:

op y  =  Eop  y

Where op is the kinetic energy operator which is written in 3D as:

op   =    p^ p^ / 2m  =  [p^ x  +  p^ y    + p^ z 2  ] / 2m

=  ħ2/ 2m [ 2 /  x2  +   2 /  y2  + 2 /  z2 ) = ħ2/ 2m Ñ 2

Where Ñ is the Laplacian operator.

Angular momentum operators are also important in quantum mechanics. The physical significance of the angular momentum quantum number (ℓ) is to convey the shape of the probability density cloud or orbital for a given atom. The numbering rule for ℓ is directly contingent on the value for n. Thus, for any given n, then ℓ must be such that it has integral values from 0 to (n -1). This means if n = 2, then ℓ can have (n- 1) = (2 -1) = 1. But if n =1, then: ℓ = (n – 1) =  0.

We now look at the total angular momentum, which would be:

L = [ℓ (ℓ + 1)] 1/2 (ħ)

Consider now  the commutator relations for the respective components  L x    and  L y   :

[L x  ,   L y   ] =  [y p x   - zp y ,   zp x  - x p z ]

=   ħ / i    =  [y p x   - xp y ,]  =  i ħ L z

Thus:   [,   L ]      0

From classical mechanics we saw for the angular momentum :

ℓ  =  r   x  p  =  r p q  =  r p sin q

Where r and p are the magnitudes of the position of the particle relative to the origin and its momentum, respectively.  But in quantum mechanics, say for rectilinear coordinates ,we have:

         L =

 -i h      [i                j                  k ]
             [x             y                    z]
             [/x        /y       / z]

Where:     L  =    -i h [x  /y   -  y /x  ]

And as before  we use L to distinguish the total angular momentum from the angular momentum quantum number ℓ since the magnitude of L is: L = (ħ)   Ö [ℓ (ℓ + 1)]

It is straightforward to show the classical rectangular components of L  are:

L  =  y p x   - z p y
L  =  z p x   - xp z
L  =  x p y   - y p x

Where x, y, z are the components of r, and  p x , p y  and  p z are the components of p.

In quantum mechanics the angular momentum operators are obtained by replacing the momentum components from the classical case by their quantum mechanical equivalents, i.e.

p    =  -i h   (/x )

p    =  -i h   (/y )

p    =  -i h   (/z )

The quantum mechanical angular momentum operators are then written:

L x op   =  -i h   [y  (/x ) – x (/y)]

L y op   =  -i h   [z  (/x ) – x (/z)]

L z op   =  -i h   [x  (/y ) – y (/x)]

It is also useful here to note the role of the Pauli spin matrices  ( x   etc.), e.g.

L’ x   =  h /2   (  x )
L’ y   =  h /2   (  y )
L’ z   =  h /2   (  z )

Where:

 x     =
(0.......1)
(1.......0);

 y     =
(0.......-i)
(i.........0)

 z     =
(1.......0)
(0......-1)

And we note here each of these matrices is Hermitian.

(See e.g.   Hermitian Matrices and Orbital Angular Momentum  )

Further, since  L’ x    and   L’  are Hermitian  then (L’ x + i L’ y) and  (L’ x  -   i L’ y) are Hermitian conjugates.

It can also be shown:

L x L    =

 - h  2  (y  /z ) – (z  /y )( z  /x  – x /z)

And:

[L, L  ] =   i h  2  L z

[ L   , L z ] =   i h  2  L x

[ L   , L x ] =   i h  2  L y

i.e. none of the components of angular momentum commute with each other.
Further:

[ L   , L y ] L y  =   i h  L    L z

And:

L y   [ L   , L y ] =   i h  L    L z

Problems:

1) Write each of the angular momentum operators:’

L x op   =  -i h   [y  (/x ) – x (/y)]
L y op   =  -i h   [z  (/x ) – x (/z)]
L z op   =  -i h   [x  (/y ) – y (/x)]

In spherical coordinates.

2)   Consider the form:   [H, L x ]

Show that [H, L x ] = yZ  - zY and give the condition for H  and L x  to commute.

3) (a)  Show that (L’ x + i L’ y)   and (L’ x -  i L’ y)   are Hermitian conjugates.

b) A matrix form for one of the angular momentum Hermitan conjugates may be written:

(L’ x + i L’ y) m m’   =
ħ  [ ( -  m’ ) ( +  m’ + 1 ) ]1/2  exp (i m ℓ j)  d m m’+1

Where d m m’ +1     is the Kronecker delta applied to the quantum numbers m and m’ + 1.   The table below may be used to compute the appropriate value for the case given.

If ℓ  = 1    calculate (L’ x + i L’ y) m m’

No, We Never Actually Saw JFK's Head Blown Apart On TV In His November, 1963 Assassination

              Zapruder frame 314: Was never seen by public before 1975

It's difficult for those living today to grasp the much less tech world of 1963. For example, there were no instant cameras or devices such as cell phones back then. Photos -film had to be processed, developed. The compact polaroid camera wouldn't be invented until 1972.  Those who had small cameras in Dallas on November 22, 1963 - and were close enough to take photos (like Mary Moorman)- had those confiscated by city or federal officials. The same for those who had movie cameras. So it ought to come as no surprise those of us who were alive on Nov. 22, 1963 and sentient did not see JFK actually assassinated like those living today saw Charlie Kirk assassinated.

The only actual killing we DID see on TV in those horrific days, was that of Lee Harvey Oswald, by Dallas night club owner Jack Ruby on Sunday (Nov. 24th).  This was in the Dallas PD garage while in transit, e.g.:

This was bad enough, and the smarter citizens even then understood Oswald was taken out so he could never speak in a courtroom. Since then, addle-pated babble has emerged from various quarters trying to claim Jack Ruby was merely "saving Jackie"  from having to return to Dallas for a trial.  All such malarkey I have skewered such as a piece from SPLC writer Marilyn Elias, e.g.

The Southern Poverty Law Center: Still In Over Its Head On the JFK Assassination

Peggy Noonan therefore is correct in her recent WSJ column ('Gatekeepers and National Traumas', Sept. 20-21, p. A13) that in 1963 hardly anyone saw the Zapruder film which showed the bloody assassination of our 35th president.  In fact, the only ones who were able to were Abraham Zapruder himself, and the editors of Time-Life to whom he sold the film.  As Ms. Noonan writes:

"In the past week of shock and mourning people mentioned the Zapruder film. They'd all seen the terrible, immediately available video of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, and his bleeding to death. In the days after the killing they'd say: 'That must be like the Zapruder film when JFK was shot - you all had a lot to process. No, we didn't have to process it because we never saw it."

She is 100 percent correct.  All we beheld in the immediate aftermath were news bulletins and updates. The stills from the Zapruder film wouldn't be seen until a week after the event, published in a Nov. 29 special issue of LIFE,  e.g.

which described them as: "a remarkable and exclusive series of pictures which show, for the first time and in tragic detail, the fate which befell our President".

Even so, the only images shown were black and white stills from the Z-film, no color. The lead chapter was introduced with the following page:

And inside we find some of the Z-film images shown below.

The truth is there was no actual full public showing of the assassination of JFK until  March 6, 1975 on Geraldo Riviera's Good Night America show:

1975. The 'Zapruder film' is released on Geraldo Rivera's Good Night America, graphic - YouTube

Those b&w images alone remained with us - and for the first time we beheld the absolute horror of what happened.  As you can see for yourselves.  But not all the gory details were shown, in the interest of preserving national sanity and avoiding gore. As Noonan writes:

"One week after the assassination LIFE editors rushed out an issue including selected frames of the film in black and white.  They didn't include the head snapping moment of the fatal bullet.."

But many of us did feel those ought to have been included, especially in the wake of the Warren Commission whitewash. Which never would have grained traction the way it did in the early years with the bunkum of the lone assassin. As I showed in a previous post,

Let's Cut The Bull: Analysis-Based Conspiracy Theories CAN In Fact Be Rigorous AND Scientific!

 The "lone nut" WC bunkum could emerge in large part because people at the time did not actually see what occurred in real time. It then became fairly easy to manipulate photos, witnesses, evidence to arrive at a distracting political solution - as well as protecting LBJ - who masterminded the Commission. The deep (physics-based) analysis of the Z-film by assassination researchers could only commence after it was publicly available in 1975.  Those like Robert Groden could then do yeoman work to get to the truth.

 For those who prefer to see color digitized (and complete) versions of the film it is simple enough using Google.  I would use Robert Groden's name in the search since he was the one responsible for that digitized version which most emphatically put the bullseye on multiple shooters - none of whom were Lee Harvey Oswald.

Solutions To Retrograde Motion Practical Astronomy Focus Problems

 1) a) Compare the orbital velocities of Venus and Earth, if the sidereal period for Venus, T1,  is 224.69 d, and for Earth (T2) is 365.25 d.

b) Verify this by using a Table of orbital velocities for the planets - given in km/s

Solutions:

We have:   V2/V1 = (a2/a1) (T1/T2)

By convention we assign '1' to the inner planet (Venus) and '2' to the outer (Earth). We have a2 = 1 AU and for Venus (from Kepler's third law):

T1 = (224.69/365.25) yr. = 0.6151 yr.

a1 = {[T1]2}1/3 = [(0.6151)2]1/3

a1 = 0.723 AU

Therefore:

V2/V1 = (0.7234)(1/0.6151)

V2/V1 = 1.175

(b) According to a Table of Orbital Velocities in Astrometric & Geodetic Data:

V(Venus) = 35.02 km/s

V(Earth) = 29.78 km/s

Take the ratio of the velocities:

V(Venus)/V(earth) = (35.02 km/s)/ (29.78 km/s) = 1.175

So, Venus' orbital velocity is 1.175 times Earth's which conforms to the result of p
art (a).

2.(a) Why doesn't the component  Vp cos (φ)   contribute  to the observed angular velocity of the planet, (i.e. in Fig. 1) ?

(b) What if the  angular velocity of the planet as observed from Earth is:
 - (Vp - V)/ PE and parallel  to the orbital motion?

Solutions:

(a) The  component, Vp cos (φ)  doesn't contribute to the observed angular velocity of the planet because the  component vector direction  (along line P'E')  is oblique to the motion vector (itself tangent to the orbit)

b) If the angular velocity of the planet as observed from Earth is:  - (Vp - V)/ PE and parallel to the orbital motion, then it must also be in a direction opposite to the orbital motion, and hence is retrograde at opposition.  (Since Vp < V )

"He Can't Take A Joke!"- Kimmel Roasts Trump in Return - And The Wannabe King Wants To Sue ABC Again

                                         Kimmel greets crowd clapping on his return.

"Our leader celebrates Americans losing their jobs because he can't take a joke." - Jimmy Kimmel last night

Jimmy Kimmel literally roasted Trump for the better part of his monologue last night, e.g.

Jimmy Kimmel EVISCERATES Trump in triumphant TV return

And predictably the 79-year-old demented wannabe tyrant couldn't hack it, scribbling in his Truth Social post:

Bragging "the last time I went after them they paid out 16 million dollars".  But they will not bite this time around, butt munch. ABC- Disney now knows - and the people know - that if they go yellow belly up against free speech again Disney customers can just cut the streaming service.

 Kimmel also graciously referred to Erika Kirk who on Sunday evoked Christian grace and compassion by saying she forgave her husband's killer.  Not so Tyrant Trump who, made a seemingly unscripted remark that summed up the retribution campaign that has come to define his second term.

I hate my opponents and I don’t want the best for them.

But this was in keeping with his pugilistic, bombastic, Philistine - Ape style of politics - which includes inciting insurrections and pursuing retribution for his political opponents. As he is trying to do now by getting AG Pam Bondi to prosecute James Comey, Adam Schiff, Letitia James and others.

This is the dirtbag pustule that 77 million elected and now we are stuck with until he either leaves office as a lame duck - or is removed when his dementia reaches intolerable proportions.

The critical takeaway from the Kimmel episode is that push back is effective and is the key to preserving our free speech rights under the first amendment. Once that is allowed to be taken, we are on a downward track to mirror Orban's Hungary or even Putin's Russia.  That can't be allowed to happen.

Jimmy Kimmel makes TV history with an emotional defense of free speech - The Washington Post

Excerpt:

The conditions for Kimmel’s return remain mysterious. Did Disney totally reverse its (clearly manufactured) objection to his remarks last Monday and give him free rein? Kimmel remained vague, saying only that he and ABC’s parent company “talked it through.” He expressed gratitude, emphasizing that as much as he objected to his suspension, they really didn’t have to reinstate him and that doing so “unfortunately, and I think unjustly” puts them at risk.

The company’s strategy has indeed been difficult to discern throughout this mess. Yesterday, while fielding boycotts from opposite sides — one from conservative broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair, which refused to air Kimmel’s return on their affiliate stations, and another from customers protesting Disney’s role in the erosion of First Amendment rights by canceling their Disney and Hulu packages — the company announced a price increase for its subscriptions.

Kimmel, by contrast, framed his return well, skillfully connecting his own role in the firestorm to other significant moments in TV history, particularly First Amendment battles. On Tuesday, in advance of his first show back, he posted a photograph of himself next to TV legend Norman Lear, who co-signed (and won) a First Amendment lawsuit against the FCC in 1976. And he opened his monologue by saying “As I was saying before I was interrupted” — a reference to Jack Paar’s legendary return to “The Tonight Show” after he quit over a network decision to censor him.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s return to "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" drew 6.2 million viewers on Tuesday night, nearly four times the show’s usual audience, according to preliminary Nielsen figures.

The episode was Kimmel’s first since ABC and its parent company, Disney, suspended the program last week following backlash over remarks he made about the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The suspension sparked a national debate over free speech.

The New York Times noted in a report that more than 20 percent of ABC affiliates did not air the episode. Nexstar and Sinclair, two major station groups, said they would continue to pre-empt the show, though Nexstar said Wednesday it was in talks with Disney.

Online interest was also strong: his monologue drew more than 17 million views on YouTube within a day.

Tuesday marked the return of late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel, after his show was suspended last week following threats from President Donald Trump's administration. And Kimmel didn't hold back in his criticism of the administration — or in his defense of the Constitutional right to free speech.

Kimmel began his show with an opening monologue mentioning Disney (which owns ABC) pulling his show off the air following remarks he made about "the MAGA gang" trying to "score political points" off of the fatal shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. He thanked everyone for supporting him while he was off the air, including both his fellow late-night comics and even conservative voices like Ben Shapiro and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for defending his right to speak regardless of their personal political views. He maintained that his comments were not about Kirk — adding that he abhorred Kirk's murder and empathized for his family — but about attempts to exploit his death for political gain.
