Who wouldn't want to receive the Presidential Medal Of Freedom? Well, no one I know of now that Trump has converted it into another symbol of refuse and tripe - like he's trying to do with the Constitution. With Trump's latest award of this medal to a known traitor and bootlicker - Devin Nunes - it has ceased to have any meaning at all, as well as being debased. This follows Trump's previous awarding of it to the degenerate racist rabble rouser blowhard Rush Limburger.
Clearly continuing his depraved acts of despoiling everything once venerable and dignified, Trump has reached new lows - perfectly correlating with his efforts to overthrow a duly elected incoming government. According to the WSJ's account of this latest travesty (p.A4, Tuesday):
"As chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2017, Mr. Nunes oversaw the House panel's Russia probe, but drew criticism for providing cover to the Trump administration rather than leading a serious, independent inquiry."
As I noted in several early 2017 posts, Nunes deemed it necessary to run cover for Trump after James Comey's testimony. Comey openly acknowledged before the House Intelligence Committee that the FBI was conducting an active investigation into the ties between the Trump campaign and Russians. This unsettled Nunes and blew all his deliberate leaks into a cocked hat.
Recall here it was Nunes and his Repuke compadres (Trey Gowdy and Thomas Rooney) who did their level best in the then House Intel Committee hearing to steer the emphasis to leaked information rather than the actual undermining of the 2016 election. They thus used their questions to (then) FBI Director Comey as a way to highlight only the leaks to journalists. And thereby to deflect the attention from Trump's criminality to instead criticize the news coverage about the Russia investigation. Nunes at one point even bellowed:
"We aim to determine who has leaked or facilitated leaks of classified information so that these individuals can be brought to justice."The sheer irony was that Nunes had become the paramount leaker of classified files toward the nefarious end of protecting Trump. To quote Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee: “Representative Nunes’s statements would appear to reveal classified information, which is a serious concern."
In effect, Devin Nunes, in a desperate move to provide cover for Trump, committed a felony in order to sabotage the very commission he chaired. Nunes' tactics had all the hallmarks of a classic disinformation and obfuscation hit which I've seen many times before in other investigations. They usually occur just as said "noose" is tightening or when an investigation is finally coming toward a unifying resolution.
With the release of a redacted Democratic memorandum - countering Nunes' wild claims - his credibility was trashed and his real agenda exposed. That agenda disclosed no independent inquiry but rather a deliberate personal sabotage of the inquiry-investigative process. This is the maggot to whom Trump awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom.
As the WSJ piece noted, the medal:
"Is considered one of the nation's highest civilian honors and is awarded to people who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States."
Alas, Nunes contributed - by his leaking of classified material and disinformation campaign- only to the interests of Donald Trump, a traitor. Not to the national interests or security of the United States. In effect, Trump debased the medal by awarding it to a fellow traitor.
Will the medal ever recover it's once prestigious cachet? Probably, but only after Trump is gone and his debasements of the medal (with another upcoming award to Jim Jordan) to come) are long forgotten.

Upon entering office, Trump determined to leave behind not one of this nation's honorable traditions unsullied by his petty, corrupt little fingers. In this, and probably only this, he has succeeded in a similar award-winning fashion.
