HAIL TO THE CHAMPS!
Packers Clay Matthews (left) and Aaron Rodgers (right) celebrate with the Lombardi Trophy after today's victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Well, for a time I could barely digest my sixth sloppy Joe slider with my chips and beer, as the Pittsburgh Steelers threatened to steal this Super Bowl out from under the noses of my Green Bay Packers with barely 2 minutes remaining. I had seen it before, as when they beat the Packers in the last second in a game a year or so earlier, and then beat my wife's Ravens during the Playoffs.
But this time, the Pack got the last laugh - with Steeler quarterback Roethlisberger's last ditch pass sailing into the arms of a Packer for the last (4th down) gasp and the end of the threat.
Indeed, the Packers had to battle through most of the second half what with three key players gone from injuries, including wide receiver Donald Driver, plus Sam Shields and Charles Woodson - two outstanding defensive backs. With the last two out especially, the Pack had to dig deep down to win and the Offense under Aaron Rodgers had to show up.
They did, with Rodgers completing 24 of 39 passes with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 111. Deservedly, he won the Most Valuable Player award, which included a 2011 426 HP Camaro.
The Packers in winning their fourth Superbowl and 13th NFL Championship now bring the Lombardi Trophy back to where it belongs in Green Bay, otherwise known as Titletown.
The Pack became only the second sixth seed - and the first ever from the National Football Conference- to go all the way to the Superbowl and win it. This entailed four successive road wins.
Congrats again to a fine team and let's hope this win is now built into a dynasty.
Assuming we end the standoff between the NFL Players Union and Team Owners and actually get a season next year.
To all the Packers, enjoy your championship and the Superbowl rings that go along with it - you earned them. (And sidenote to Greg Jennings: Yes, okay, "God is great" but was he really catching the football for you today? Are you going to blame him for the drops too? Just asking! In the end, let's try to keep religion out of the game, because in the end it has no place therein - nor do any god beliefs. Unless you're saying God could only be from Green Bay and catch winning TDs for them and no other team!)
